Green Army, welcome back to RAC Arena for Friday Night Netball!
Tonight’s clash with the Queensland Firebirds shapes up as another exciting encounter and our team cannot wait to get back out on our home court after two weeks on the road.
Wins over the Mavericks in Melbourne and the NSW Swifts at Ken Rosewell Arena have put us in the perfect position to continue to attack this season and play the Fever way.
I was really impressed by the way we responded after being challenged by the Swifts. We started the game brilliantly and as expected the Swifts fought back. But the positive was we was stepped up when challenged and produced a terrific second half to secure a huge win away from home to go four from four.
We had winners all over the court but the efforts of Sunday Aryang to hold the world’s best goal attack in Helen Housby to three goals was simply amazing. Sunday’s found a new lease of life leading our defence this season and she’s thriving.
While we shut down one goal attack, our goal attack had a day out from long range. For Shanice Beckford to shoot six from six during the Power Five really put the pressure on the Swifts and we are loving what she is bringing to Suncorp Super Netball.
Our every reliable midcourters, Skipper Jess Anstiss, Centre Kelsey Browne and Wing Attack Alice Teague-Neeld also ensured that there was pressure on the Swifts throughout the contest. While making sure Shanice and Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard had plenty of supply to apply scoreboard pressure.
This week, we welcome Rebecca Bulley, Kim Ravaillion and the Queensland Firebirds to RAC Arena and we are all looking forward to experiencing Netball under the Friday Night Lights.
The Firebirds have been playing some good netball and they really challenged the Swifts two weeks ago and their supershot prowess with WA-born Donnell Wallam and premiership Thunderbird Tippah Dawn has proved challenged for their opposition so far in 2024.
There are no easy games in SSN and today will be no different, so make sure you get right behind our team, make lots of noise and let’s attack another win at our Green Fortress.

Fever are back home for a firebirds clash
Coming off the back of a punishing win against the NSW Swifts, Fever continues to sit at the top of the Suncorp Super Netball ladder.
The last time Fever faced the Firebirds was during the pre-season Team Girls Cup tournament, Fever fell short by one goal despite an impressive game.
Since then, Fever have had a perfect start to their 2024 SSN season. The Firebirds on the other hand has been less than ideal, with one win and three losses to start their season.
Kelsey Browne, who comes off the back of a huge game with 30 feeds and three deflections against the Swifts will take on Macy Gardner in center. Gardner is currently in good strides after recovering from a broken wrist last year, starting in center for every match so far.
Firebird’s Remi Kamo is currently leading the league in defensive rebounds and will do her best to contain the huge talent that is Jhaniele FowlerNembhard. The Fever shooting icon is currently leading SSN in Nissan Net Points and goals, no surprise after her 96.8% shooting accuracy against the Swifts.

LIVE ON Foxtel and Kayo
Wing Attack Lara Dunkley will face Fever captain Jess Anstiss, while Hulita Veve will do her best to block the feeding abilities of Alice Teague-Neeld who is sitting on 107 Goal Assists in just 4 games.
Fever’s defensive trio, including Round 2 and 4 MVP Sunday Aryang, Fran Williams and Kadie- Ann Dehaney will take on Tippah Dwan and Donnell Wallam in goals. Australian Diamonds teammates Aryang and Wallam will deliver an interesting face-off, Wallam’s super shot capabilities leave her in second place behind Fowler-Nembhard in goals and will no doubt be a challenge.
West Coast Fever Vice-Captain Alice Teague-Neeld said it was great to get the win on the weekend in Sydney.
“The Swifts are a great team who we knew weren’t going to give up during the game, so that win is a really nice confidence boost going into Round 5,” she said.
“The Firebirds will no doubt be a challenge, but as a squad we’re ready for it.”

West Coast Fever put on a punishing performance against the Swifts in Sydney, defeating the side by 16 goals and leaving Fever undefeated.
The match up started as an absolute nail biter, both squads trading goals for the first 10 minutes in a tense battle.
Fever’s mid court had an outstanding start to the game, Kelsey Browne’s 10 feeds, Alice Teague-Neeld’s nine and captain Jess Anstiss’s incredible intercept made their teammates jobs on either end that bit easier.
The combination of Sunday Aryang’s pressure in the goal circle and Kadie-Ann Dehaney’s quick hands resulted in four deflections and a rebound from the pair.
Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard’s long reach was critical in goals, a super shot and a 94% accuracy mixed with Shanice Beckford’s two super shot’s saw Fever run away with the lead by quarter time.
The Swifts came out swinging in the second quarter, making the girls in green work that bit harder after their strong start.
Fran Williams entered the court with a bang, taking a huge deflection and turning the ball over, consistently putting pressure on Sam Wallace-Joseph and fellow England Rose Helen Housby in goals.
Aryang’s awareness of the ball was incredibly impressive, taking a deflection from a distance to round out her three from the quarter.
Beckford’s second super shot for the quarter put Fever in front by one at half-time.
Browne was on fire in the third quarter, reading her teammates movements and ushering her 11 feeds into the goals.
Aryang seemed to be flying throughout the match, constantly aware of the ball and its movements, both in the goal circle and throughout the court.
Fever slowed down the chaotic nature of the second quarter, listening to Head Coach Dan Ryan’s call to once again control their movements, taking back the game.
Fever started their last quarter with the intent to win, with quick and solid movements and no room for mistakes.
Browne’s game just kept getting better and better with two deflections, four goal assists and seven feeds. Matched by none other than Anstiss with a deflection, and 5 goal assists by Teague-Neeld.
Aryang ended her game with a huge 11 deflections, four of those in the last quarter. She played a massive role in shutting down the shooting capabilities of Housby who only managed an unheard of three goals against Fever’s defensive unit.
Fowler-Nembhard came out for a fourth week and demonstrated just how good she really is with a 98% shooting accuracy.
Fever now turn their attention toward their second home game of the season, facing the Firebirds at RAC Arena on Friday, May 10.
Ten West Australian athletes have been selected in Netball Australia’s National Pathway Squads for 2024.
WA secured two medals at the recent National Netball Championships and the selection of 10 athletes adds weight to the strength of the State’s performance.
Netball WA would like to congratulate the following athletes on their selection:
19/U: Georgie Cleaver, Aitaua Enari, Scarlet Jauncey and Charisse Rond.
17/U: Teagan Begovic, Kate Cunningham, Halle Richards, Emily Rivers, Ebony Stewart and Clara Wigley.
Netball WA Talent Coach Guy Keane said: “We’re proud to have so many home grown athletes selected in national squads. It’s a great reflection of the strength of our pathway to identify, support and celebrate our athletes ensuring a thriving pipeline of West Australian talent.
“National selection is a tremendous outcome for our athletes as they have been able to demonstrate their commitment, hard work, and talent on a national stage. This is an exciting opportunity to continue their development and empowers to grow their championship material.
“Our High-Performance Plan speaks to being ‘courageous’ and ‘thinking bold’ in our pursuit towards ‘sustained success’. We will celebrate and reflect on our recent achievements, to identify and acknowledge the things we are doing well and that we can call our strengths, as well as dig deep into the areas that we know we must continue to work on and improve.”
Netball Australia will deliver training camps across July for the selected athletes as an opportunity to develop their skills and train in a high performance environment. Both camps will be held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
The Kangas Netball Club were able to relieve some of the financial pressure from their members last year due to the profits made from the Netball WA Community Raffle.
In 2023, the Albany based club sold the third highest number of raffle tickets across the state, raising an impressive $5078 in the process.
Club President Sharnee Clothier said this immensely helped the financial burdens the club and their members had been feeling.
“We have found that over the last couple of years the price of everything has gone up. Any fundraising is a huge benefit to our members because we invest that money back into the club,” she said.
“The money from the raffle helps us pay for things like our windup at the end of the year, medallions, and equipment upgrades. The extra assistance helps us keep our fees down for members.
“People are struggling to pay sporting fees at the moment, normally we don’t do payment plans but in the last year we’ve had multiple families request them.”
The 2024 Community Raffle will be the first time that Clubs and Associations retain 100% of the proceeds from the raffle, providing further financial support.
Ms Clothier said this new system will be a huge opportunity for clubs to reinvest in themselves and take some pressure off their members.
Within the Albany community many parents are paying for multiple children to play a variety of sport, these seasons often overlap which leads to several fees being due at the same time.
Their secret to selling so many tickets and generating as much profit as possible was their use of social media, in particular Facebook to get the word out to members and surrounding local areas.
Ms Clothier also credits the support of the wider community, the club sold tickets on their Saturday game days or at their local Farmers Market and witnessed their community getting behind them.
The Kanga’s encourage other WA Associations and Clubs to get involved in this year’s community raffle.
“We would definitely recommend doing it, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to sell a ticket and how people will get behind it for their club,” she said.
“It’s just so well organised, the process is super smooth and easy, so it makes you want to participate again and again.”

by Quarter
Q1: WCF 27 | FIREBIRDS 17
The match got underway with Fever’s centre pass which was promptly converted by Jhaniele Fowler for her 500th goal of the season.
Sunday Aryang achieved an intercept of her own to cap off an incredible defensive effort.
When it came to the Power 5, Sasha Glasgow was on target with four Super Shots to ensure Fever went into the first break 10 goals ahead.
Q2: WCF 50 | FIR 30
Fast moving play through the midcourt also featured with Jess Anstiss, Verity Simmons and Alice Teague-Neeld playing well in the centre third.
Fever’s change up to prioritise Super Shots in the Power 5 worked wonders with Glasgow showing off her distance shooting.
Q3: WCF 71 | FIR 48
With a dominant lead already in the bank, Fever took to the third quarter with more resolve, looking to maintain their lead.
Coach Dan Ryan took the opportunity to rotate his players, brining on Kim Jenner at Wing Defence, moving Anstiss to Centre and taking off Simmons to take some well-earned rest.
Firebirds put up a fight in the third term but two Super Shots by Glasgow meant Fever took a 23goal margin into three-quarter time.
Q4: WCF 97 | FIR 63
Coming into the final quarter Fever didn’t let off the gas, winning the term by another 11-goals.
Simmons came back on to drive her team home with Fever’s flexibility in midcourt proving a major advantage for the team. As was the story of the game.
