It’s so good to finally be back home at RAC Arena playing in front of the Green Army after a gruelling travel schedule over the past five weeks.
We have certainly clocked up our fair share of frequent flyer points with our trips to Sydney, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Melbourne. But we have embraced the challenge and now find ourselves in a good place, second place on the ladder, as we move into the second half of the season.
Last weekend’s one goal loss to the Melbourne Vixens was a heartstopper and a heartbreaker, but a really valuable experience for the team in the context of our season. The Vixens really brought their best and challenged us in many areas of our game. This is such a tough competition, and any team can win on their day. Every game is crucial, especially now.
And tonight, we know we need to step up our game if we want to get back on the winners list. It’s a huge showdown against the NSW Swifts as second plays third on the ladder. When we met earlier in the season, we took an 11-goal win, but expect a goal-for-goal grind in this one. Both teams are very evenly matched so expect this match to be played with the passion and intensity of a final.
So, I’d like to welcome the NSW Swifts to Perth, led by Head Coach, Briony Akle and Co-Captains Maddy Proud and Paige Hadley. We look forward to a physical and skilful battle today between two great teams.
Also, a special shout out to all the mothers out there to wish you all a very happy Mother’s Day for tomorrow. Netball mums are the best type of Mum’s!
So GREEN ARMY, let’s do this! We need you in full voice tonight, so get behind us, believe in us and let’s turn RAC Arena into our Fortress!
Go Fever!
Dan Ryan Head Coach WEST COAST FEVERWest Coast Fever are returning home after two weeks on the road with a win against the Lightning and a tight loss against the Vixens which concluded a gruelling block of four away games in five weeks.
Sunshine Coast Lightning
Fever’s trip to the Sunshine Coast was a success, with the team prevailing 74-64 in front of an intimidating crowd.
It was a tense affair which saw Fever leading for much of the game after trading scores for the first eight minutes of the game.
A run of five goals saw Fever take control and build an eight-goal lead at the first break.
The two teams were in an arm wrestle throughout the second and third quarters with Fever being able nudge the scoreline to their advantage.
At the close of the third quarter Lightning were able to get themselves back in the game, bringing the margin to seven to keep the game alive.
Lightning kept on the pressure through to the halfway point of the last quarter to make the difference in scores just five goals.
After a Lightning timeout, Fever were able to take back control of the game and maintain their lead till the close of play.
Jhaniele Fowler was at her brilliant best, scoring 65 Goals without a miss and collecting three Rebounds. Alice Teague-Neeld also continued her good form with 37 feeds and 33 Goal Assists.
Melbourne Vixens
Last week Fever travelled to Melbourne to play a strong Vixens side who they only beat by a single goal in Round 1.
While the score difference was the same, it was the Vixens who prevailed in nail biting fashion, taking the game 74-73.
Vixens were able to get on the front foot early, taking the lead by five goals halfway through the first quarter.
That would prove to be the biggest margin for any team in the game as the tight tussle continued.
Sasha Glasgow was exceptional from distance as she sunk two Super Shots to reduce the margin to just two goals at quarter time.
Neither team gave much away through the second term but in similar fashion to the first Fever had a productive Power 5 bringing scores level.
A four-goal run to start the third quarter gave Fever their first moment ahead in the game but both teams exchanged blows as neither could build a comfortable margin.
The last quarter had everything to play for and despite Glasgow and Fowler scoring three Super Shots between them a buzzer beating twopointer by Kiera Austin stole the win away in dramatic fashion.
Jess Anstiss showed off her versatility, impressing in Wing Defence and Centre as Dan Ryan was forced to keep the midcourt flexible.
Fowler also impressed with her range shooting, scoring multiple Super Shots for the first time this season.

The top of the table Demons continued their good form with a 72-45 win over the Jets, making it seven wins in a row in the GIG WANL Open Division.
Demons got out of the blocks quickly, winning the first quarter by 10 goals as Jets struggled to keep pace.
The following two quarters were closer but the Jets still couldn’t get themselves back in it as Goal Shooter Kelsey McPhee sunk a match high 29 Goals.
Sharks also came home victors with a 63-45 win over the Warriors to mark Captain Jess Penny’s 150th game.
An impressive 15-goal opening term saw the Sharks take an early lead by eight goals.
Sharks kept their foot on the gas, winning the remaining three quarters to finish the game on top and stay in a finals slot with six wins and two losses.
Despite Warriors Goal Shooter Hana Stokes scoring an impressive 34 goals at 92 per cent, big tallies for both Rose Aryang (24 Goals) and Asha Parsons (33 Goals) meant the Sharks ended the game victorious.
Comets and Roar were also on the winners list to both stay in the top four with six wins and two losses each.
There were a number of close results in the 20/U Division, most notably a two-goal win for Comets over Rangers.
The two teams could barely be split in the first quarter with the Comets taking it out by just one goal.
After the first break, the Comets raced away taking the quarter by six goals to give them a seven-goal buffer for the second half.
The Rangers came back winning both the third and fourth quarters to try and get themselves in the lead but ultimately wayward goal shooting prevented them from doing so.
The win keeps the Comets in the top four and leaves the Rangers just outside of it in fifth position. Warriors edged out the Sharks 59-54 in a close affair in their 20/U clash.
In both the first and second quarters the Warriors got ahead, winning both by just two goals.
The Sharks were able to wipe the slate clean in the third term ensuring scores were level at three quarter time.
A clutch performance in the final quarter let the Warriors walk away with a hard-earned win and were helped by an impressive 41 goals by Lily Gilsenan.
In the Men’s Division, the Roar made another imposing win against second placed Warriors, taking out the game 60-47.
Comets snapped their two-game losing streak with an eight-goal win against the Demons.
The Men’s division is looking forward to Rapid Round next week, featuring shots worth two and three goals, 10 minute quarters and only five players on the court.
West Coast Fever made it four wins from four with an 11-goal victory away from home against the NSW Swifts.
Key Moments:
Fever controlled the third quarter through great defensive pressure and when Sasha Glasgow pulled off two important gains after Fever turnovers, the away side was able to build an important eight-goal lead heading into the final change.
Quarter by Quarter:
Q1: FEVER 15 | SWIFTS 18
The Swifts jumped out to an early lead after capitalising on some early Fever turnovers.
By the time the Swifts called a time out with six minutes to play, Fever had fought back to lead by one. Alice Teague-Neeld and Glasgow were working hard in attack to find holes in the Swifts’ defence while two gains from skipper Courtney Bruce helped get the visitors back in the contest.
Scores were even at the start of the Power 5 and the Swifts made their move with two Super Shots to Helen Housby helping them to a quarter time lead.
Q2: FEVER 35 | SWIFTS 35
Swifts extended their lead to five goals early in the second quarter before a Fever timeout and re-jig of the line-up started to turn the term towards the away side. Kim Jenner came on at Goal Defence, Sunday Aryang in game 50 moved to Wing Defence and Jess Anstiss moved to Centre.
Fever’s pressure all over the court made life tough for the Swifts and they were able to complete the hard work in attack. Bruce was superb in defence
finishing with five Gains and two Intercepts for the half.
A Glasgow Super Shot early in Power 5 saw them hit the front before Housby responded on the buzzer to level scores at the main break.
Q3: FEVER 59 | SWIFTS 51
Fever turned up the defence in the third quarter. Some defensive brilliance from Bruce early in the third saw Fever open up a five-goal lead halfway through the quarter.
Jenner, in her best outing yet for Fever, played a crucial role as Fever began to build a lead and she had the better of the contest with English International Housby.
A Glasgow Super Shot at the start of Power 5 saw the Fever lead by six as Coach Dan Ryan called time out. After the resumption, Glasgow pulled out two vital gains to ensure the Fever had the advantage leading into the last quarter.
Q4: FEVER 78 | SWIFTS 67
Fever continued to control the contest and led by
nine goals heading into the Power 5 as the Swifts injected Fawns to try and close the gap.
Glasgow scored three Super Shots, to finish with seven from eight attempts for the game and matched the three scored by Housby to ensure Fever left Sydney with all four points.

Briony Akle
Head Coach
West Coast Fever will face a dangerous NSW Swifts side at RAC Arena for Round 9 of the Suncorp Super Netball season, as the team in green look to get back their top of the table spot.
Last Week
Fever fell to just their second defeat of the season against the Vixens losing by just one goal in the dying seconds of the game due to a Kiera Austin Super Shot.
Vixens got off to a strong start, holding a fivegoal lead for much of the first quarter before a pair of Super Shots from Sasha Glasgow whittled the deficit down to two goals at quarter time.
The rest of the game was a tight affair with the lead rarely passing two points. The final quarter saw three Super Shots between Glasgow and Fowler but they were not enough to get Fever over the line.
Swifts took home their fourth win in a row as they beat the Sunshine Coast Lightning 67-63 in Sydney.
Despite a strong start for the Lightning the Swifts were able to reign them back in thanks to a strong second and third quarter giving them a four-goal advantage to defend.
A back and forth final term saw the Swifts hold on with English import Helen Housby scoring an impressive seven Super Shots throughout the game.

Fever will need to win the mid-court battle and stop Swifts Centre Maddy Proud, who is coming off the back of a stellar performance last week featuring 44 Feeds, 26 Goal Assists and five Pickups.
We could be in for an eye catching shoot out with Glasgow and Housby both being reliable Super Shot shooters. Will Sunday Aryang and Courtney Bruce be able prevent the Swifts star from making an impact from the two-point zone?
Fowler is currently cruising at the summit of most goals in the competition, scoring 446 goals at an unbelievable 98 per cent accuracy.
Not only has her accuracy been key to her success but feeding by the midcourt and especially Alice Teague-Neeld has allowed the Jamaican Goal Shooter to have the most shots in the competition.
Fowler is going at 55.7 goals per game this year, only one away from the pace set in her record breaking 2020 season where she scored 808 goals.
She is also closing in on 5,000 career Goals, needing a further 184 to reach the milestone.
