RACE US TO REAL ZERO
Last week in Adelaide was another heartbreaker as we went down to top of the table Thunderbirds by a solitary goal, but we cannot wait for the challenge facing us tonight at RAC Arena in front of you, our adoring Green Army!
These tight losses are making our team and players stronger and galvanising us. I have no doubt that as we move into the business end of the season, we will look back on these tight contests knowing they helped us with the end game.
Tonight, we face the Sunshine Coast Lightning who are coming off a win against the Collingwood Magpies at home and we expect them to come hard as they look to stay in the finals race.
We know they have the scoring power with Diamonds Steph Wood and Cara Koenen up front. Equally their defensive stocks are also strong led by veteran South
African international Karla Pretorius.
Tonight, we celebrate 100 National League Games for Alice Teague-Neeld. Alice is an absolute gem, a great leader and a player who has over the past two season reinvented herself into one of the competition’s best Wing Attacks. Well done on the 100 games Alice and I know Green Army, you will cheer her on loudly tonight!
All going to plan, our great Goal Shooter Jhaniele Fowler will score her 5,000th Suncorp Super Netball Goal tonight. She’s 36 away from this amazing achievement and when you consider she is a five-time competition MVP and scored more than 7,500 National League Goals, she will go down as one of the greatest of all time.
I’d like to welcome the Lightning to Perth, led by former Fever Assistant coach Belinda Reynolds and Captain Steph Wood. We look forward to a fierce and exciting game of netball tonight as the season reaches the pointy end.
So GREEN ARMY, it’s game time and we need you in full voice! So, get behind us, believe in us and let’s turn RAC Arena into our Fortress!
Go Fever!
Dan Ryan Head Coach WEST COAST FEVERWest Coast Fever will be wearing a special First Nations Uniform to mark the second week of games for the Suncorp Super Netball First Nations Round.
The round coincides with National Reconciliation Week with the theme of Be a Voice for Generations, highlighting the importance of every Australian to be a voice for reconciliation no matter their context.
The artwork on Fever’s dress was developed by Noongar artists Peter Farmer and Kylie Graham. Seven circular symbols appear on the dress representing the players on court coming together and gathering.
The lines and sharp angles on the dress symbolise the unpredictable path water weaves through the landscape and the 90-degree angles of the netball court. They also portray the sharp turns that life takes each individual on.
There are also symbols of Aboriginal culture that represent the female on the dress.
Farmer said he was proud of the collaboration and the journey that led to the dress.
“When West Coast Fever came to me and said, ‘Peter would you like to design the dress?’ I said yes,” he said.
“I went away and spoke to my wife and we agreed it wasn’t really right without having a female component so we brought Kylie in to come and do the symbols because in our protocols we always look at a male and female concept in life.
“We came up with the concept and are pretty proud Fever are still wearing it and using it.
“We are really proud of it, I see how proud the
players are to chuck it on and when they win the games it really is a proud moment for WA.”
Each dress has a slightly different design representing the individuality of each player and everyone’s unique role on the court.
Graham said she had designed the dresses with subtle differences to represent the individuality of every player.
“Each design has been designed differently as each player on the court has a similar but different job to do,” she said.
“I wanted to do it differently so when the girls are standing there, they become a sisterhood but are all different and have each other’s backs when they get onto the court.”
Fever Captain Courtney Bruce said wearing the First Nations Round Uniform was an honour for the team.
“Our Club is very proud of our connection with the Indigenous community in Western Australia and we love wearing our First Nations dress each and every year,” Bruce said.
“It is also important to our playing group that our home and away dress has an indigenous design element, which has been a permanent feature since 2020.
“We have such a good connection to the Shooting Stars and the work that they do in First Nations Spaces and the connection we have back to grassroots WA.”
Shooting Stars are also the Match Day Partner for the Round 12 clash at RAC Arena.
West Coast Fever have lost their fourth match of the season by one-goal last week, after the Adelaide Thunderbirds came from behind to secure the win at Netball SA Stadium, 54-53.
Moments that Mattered
After quarter time, the Thunderbirds came out looking like a different team, ramping up their defensive pressure across the court, led by Goal Keeper Shamera Sterling.
Fever lost Verity Simmons due to COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols, she was replaced by Jordan Cransberg in the team.
Quarter by Quarter
Q1: WCF 20 | THU 12
Fever started strongly to silence the Adelaide crowd, building a six-goal lead heading into Power 5 off the back of strong defensive pressures across the court.
Even an early Super Shot from Georgie Horjus couldn’t stop Fever as they continued to control the game and build on their solid start.
Fever had three Deflections and three Intercepts for the quarter which was the catalyst for an eight-goal lead at the break.
Q2: WCF 31 | THU 26
Both sides ramped up the defensive pressure in the second quarter as Shamera Sterling made her presence felt, helping to reduce the Fever lead to seven at half time.
She finished the quarter with five Gains and four Deflections, making life especially tough for the Fever attack.
Captain Courtney Bruce was also crucial in defence with two Gains, two Deflections and two Rebounds for the quarter.
Sasha Glasgow continued her hot hand, sinking two Super Shots to ensure Fever maintained a lead at the main change.
Q3: WCF 41 | THU 39
Thunderbirds continued to put defensive pressure on Fever as they controlled the third quarter, reducing the Fever lead to three goals at Power 5.
Sterling, Wilson and Williams made it difficult for Fever to get easy shots on goal.
Sunday Aryang and Jess Anstiss had great quarters for Fever in defence creating three Gains and two Intercepts between them.
Q4: WCF 53 | THU 54
The game ebbed and flowed in the final quarter as both sides put significant defensive heat on their opposition.
Eleanor Caldwell scored two Super Shots to give the Thunderbird the lead and from there the Fever were up against it.
A late Super Shot from Glasgow reduced the margin to one but the Thunderbirds controlled the final minute, milking the clock and denying Fever the ball.
As GIG WANL celebrated First Nations Round, the Comets were able to snatch wins in all three divisions.
The Open Comets were able to defeat Peel Lightning 78-45 and despite the large margin, the start of the game began scrappily.
Both teams struggled to connect to their offensive circles as defenders on both teams were able to pick up loose balls.
From there however, it was one way traffic for the Comets with three of their shooters sinking more than 20 goals each.
Top of the table Open Demons faced a scare at the hands of the Warriors in a game that came down to the wire.
The Demons managed to come out on top 65-60 but were down with less than 10 minutes to play.
Neither side budged an inch throughout the game as Warriors threatened one of the upsets of the season. The Demons showed why they’re the team to beat, snatching momentum at the very end to take the win.
In the first game of the day, Warriors shocked Roar and put an end to their perfect record, coming out 37-35 victors.
The game was close throughout as neither team could grab momentum and forge a strong lead.
After the first break, Roar led by three goals but Warriors kept themselves in the game and tied up the scores at half time.
Neither team could get a lead of more than three goals and as the clock was almost up in the fourth term, Jayden Kahotea sunk a Goal from the two point range to seal the game for his side.
Comets also took out a tight win against the Demons winning their game 36-35.
There was nothing separating the sides throughout the whole game as no team won a quarter by more than a single goal.
Demons led by the barest of margins throughout much of the second half but when there was less than 30 seconds on the clock the team found themselves down by a goal.
Goal Shooter Dylan Gunn had the opportunity to sink a two-point shot to win the game but it hit the rim and fell out of bounds to allow the Comets to walk home with the win.
An incredible 50 goals at 91 per cent from Demons Goal Shooter Kelsey McPhee helped her side get over the line.
Both results mean the Roar and Comets have booked their spot in the finals but the Sharks will have to wait for their place to be secured after losing to the Roar 54-44.
In the 20/U Division, the Demons consolidated second spot on the ladder and a place in finals with a 59-42 win over the Warriors.
A fast start for the Demons meant they never looked back taking a nine-goal lead into the first break.
20/U Division leading goal scorer Chelsea Cook showed her prowess under the post with 36 Goals at 92 per cent to maintain her team’s comfortable margin.
A big 63-46 goal win for the Roar over the Sharks meant they secured their 11th straight win, while the Rangers overcame the Jets 72-40 to stay in the finals race.
Both Men’s Division games ended in thrilling fashion in the third and final Rapid Round with the Warriors and Comets managing to get over the line.
The two results mean Warriors are well placed to join the Roar in the Qualifying Final as they are two wins clear of the Comets in third place.

Courtney Bruce was exceptional in defence opposed to Australian Goal Shooter Cara Koenen with two Gains and an Intercept in the quarter to lead the way for Fever. Alice Teague-Neeld was back to her influential best with 10 Feeds to start the game strong.
Q2: WCF 39 | LIG 26
Bruce continued her stellar form in the second quarter with two Gains, an Intercept and two important Rebounds to help Fever build on their lead.

Q3: WCF 57 | LIG 50
Lightning came out firing to begin the third quarter with the first three goals before an arm wrestle developed through until Power 5.
Fever were in control with an 11-goal lead and then Lightning Captain Steph Wood stepped up with four Super Shots to reduce the Fever lead to seven at the final break.

Milestones beckon as Fever take on Lightning
West Coast Fever will face the Sunshine Coast Lightning at RAC Arena this weekend as Alice Teague-Neeld is set to make her 100th National League appearance and Jhaniele Fowler could pass 5,000 Suncorp Super Netball goals.
Last Week
Fever fell 54-53 to the table topping Thunderbirds in Adelaide in a fourth one-goal loss of the season.
The visitors got off to a good start taking the first quarter by eight as Fowler scored an impressive 19 Goals before quarter time.
Thunderbirds slowly but surely got themselves back in the game, eventually drawing scores level late in the third quarter.
Two late Super Shots from Eleanor Cardwell put her team ahead with two minutes left to play as the Thunderbirds controlled the pace of the game and wound down the clock to ensure the win.
On the Sunshine Coast, the Lightning were able to snap a four-game losing streak, beating bottom of the table Collingwood Magpies 66-62.
The match got off to a rocky start with the Queensland team down by nine goals in the second quarter. Goal Attack Steph Wood put through two Super Shots in the Power 5 to wrestle momentum away from the Magpies before half time.
From there, Lighting enjoyed much of the run of play and went from nine goals down to six goals ahead in 15 minutes. While Magpies managed to bring scores back level with two minutes to play, Wood was able to put through another Super Shot and deny Collingwood the win.
Fever will have to contend with an in-form Steph Wood in Goal Attack who is coming off the back of a productive game against the Magpies. It will be up to the defensive team of Courtney Bruce, Sunday Aryang and Kim Jenner to try to quell Wood’s impact.
Last time the sides met, Fowler had her most fruitful game of the year under the post, scoring 65 Goals without a miss to rack up 149.5 Nissan Net Points.
SAT 3 JUNE 5PM
In that game, Lightning’s defensive team of Karla Pretorius and Kadie-Ann Dehaney were kept quite so are sure to be looking to make their impact felt this week.

Teague-Neeld has been a crucial member of Fever since 2019 and has thoroughly shown her worth this season, leading the competition in Goal Assists and Centre Pass Receives.
Jhaniele Fowler is just 36 away from 5,000 SSN goals. This year, Fowler has not scored fewer than 42 Goals in a match at an average of 54 per game.
