FROM THE COACH

Firstly, Green Army, to the 10,764 of you who came to RAC Arena dressed in green to cheer us on against the Lightning, thank you for supporting our club and making it a West Coast Fever regular season record home crowd.

The support we’ve had in all of our home games has been amazing and to see the back row full again was just outstanding. Let’s hope we can beat that number again today!

Last week’s win over the Lightning was crucial. It wasn’t our cleanest or the most clinical performance by any stretch of the imagination, but at this point in the season, finding a way to win under pressure is very important.

With a fourth consecutive final series confirmed and the Thunderbirds going down to the Magpies, we can still push for a top-two spot over the course of the next two games.

Jhaniele Fowler created history last week when she scored her 5,000th Suncorp Super Netball goal and she continues to wow and amaze everyone in netball with her skill and concentration.

Verity Simmons returned to the line-up and did not miss a beat as she put together a stellar performance at Centre on her way to the game MVP award.

Today, we face the Giants who are coming off a Sydney Derby loss to the Swifts. The Giants are a dangerous commodity, particularly in the Power Five with the triple threat of Jo Harten, Sophie Dwyer and Matisse Letherbarrow - defensively we will need to be on our game to secure the win.

I’d like to welcome the Giants to Perth, led by Julie Fitzgerald and Jo Harten. If our last contest in Sydney is anything to go by, today’s game will be another beauty.

The last two rounds of the SSN season are going to be really hairy and really scary, you never know what can happen. So GREEN ARMY, it’s game time and we need you in full voice!

So, get behind us one more time, believe in us and let’s turn RAC Arena into our Fortress!

Go Fever!

Thank you to our 2023 sponsors

MATCH DAY FEATURE Fever Strike twice against lightning

West Coast Fever were able to hold on and seal their finals berth with a 69-65 win over the Sunshine Coast Lightning in front of a record RAC Arena regular season crowd.

Moments that Mattered

Early in the second half, Jhaniele Fowler put through her 36th goal of the match to bring her tally of Suncorp Super Netball goals to 5,000. The milestone confirms her place as the competition’s greatest ever shooter. The milestone happened in front of a Fever regular season record crowd of 10,764 fans.

Alice Teague-Neeld also had reason to celebrate when she stepped onto the court for her 100th National League appearance. She instantly made an impact, recording the first Centre Pass Receive, first Goal Assist as well as an eye-catching Intercept.

Quarter by Quarter

Q1: WCF 20 | LIG 13

The game got off to a messy start with both sides forcing turnovers early. However, once the game settled, Fever found their groove and built a small lead. Verity Simmons made a welcome return to the side and from the first minute as she was able to hold possession and provide Fowler with nine assists.

The midcourt duo of Teague-Neeld and Jess Anstiss were instrumental, each getting an Intercept to give Fever a seven-goal advantage heading into the first break.

Q2: WCF 37 | LIG 27

The second quarter was another tight affair and after the Lightning begun the term with three straight goals, neither team could break the deadlock.

Courtney Bruce came alive in the second quarter, recording two Rebounds and three Deflections to keep her team ahead in the game. Her performance was crucial in punishing the Lightning’s mistakes as Fever had a first half gains to goal rate of 88 per cent compared to the Lightning’s 40.

It wasn’t until Sasha Glasgow with her ever consistent shooting scored two Super Shots in Power Five that Fever’s lead pushed into double digits.

Q3:

WCF 55 | LIG 48

Fever got off to a hot start in the second half to push the lead out to 12 goals early in the quarter. However, Lightning weren’t going to fold under

the pressure as they fought back throughout the quarter

Fowler brought the crowd to their feet as she sunk her 5,000th goal in SSN as her shooting prowess proved decisive as the game went on.

Lightning reduced the margin to four at the start of the Power Five but Glasgow did what she does best and sunk three Super Shots to push the margin back out to eight goals.

Q4: WCF 69 | LIG 65

Fever looked in control for most of the fourth quarter and brought the lead back out to 12 goals.

Lightning did not go quietly though, as the side managed to snatch back momentum and come dangerously close to stealing the win away.

Lightning international Steph Wood went into the Goal Shooter position in the final minutes of the game and scored three Super Shots to bring her team only three goals away. The lead ended up being just big enough for Fever to hold on as they wound down the clock while tensions were high.

With all four points coming Fever’s way, the team in green have locked in their place in the top four and finals. They now only sit two points away from the top two after the Thunderbirds’ shock loss against Collingwood.

Teague-Neeld reaches National League ton

Since debuting as a 17-year-old Goal Attack for the Melbourne Vixens, Alice Teague-Neeld has had a netball career full of change and adaptation.

Touted as a rising star coming through the Victorian junior ranks, Teague-Neeld played her 100th National League game last weekend against the Sunshine Coast Lightning and is enjoying her fifth season for West Coast Fever.

She was one of the Vixens’ youngest ever signings when she joined the side in 2015 already boasting an impressive junior resume.

After two years with the Vixens and another two with Collingwood, Teague-Neeld made the decision to move west and join Fever.

Now in her fifth season at the club, Teague-Neeld couldn’t be happier donning the green dress.

“I love my life here in WA, both inside and outside of netball,” she said.

“I love playing netball and I love playing with the girls. There’s no better feeling than getting a win out on the court with the girls and the staff around us and the Green Army cheering us on.”

Teague-Neeld is now the competition’s leading Wing Attack having recorded 293 Goal Assists, 436 Feeds and 334 Centre Receives in 12 games this season.

The Victorian native said her career has been an unexpected ride but she is happy with where she is now.

“I didn’t know if I was going to reach 100 games, I didn’t know I’d be living over in WA playing for Fever in my second position of Wing Attack,” she said.

“You never know what’s going to happen and I’m

really enjoying it, I’m stoked that it’s happened,” she said.

As a central cog in the West Coast Fever squad, Teague-Neeld takes pride in how her game has grown during her career.

“I’ve become a little bit more mature and I’ve grown in my leadership skills as well, both on and off the court,” she said.

“I now know what I really need as a player and how to reach out to those around me as well and bring out the best in other people and what they can do for me as well.”

In 2022, Fever managed to win their maiden Premiership with Teague-Neeld in Wing Attack.

Unsurprisingly, this moment proved to be TeagueNeeld’s highlight of her time in Suncorp Super Netball.

“The highlight is definitely last year in the Grand Final and winning a premiership,” she said.

“They’re really hard to come by and let alone just winning games in SSN and making finals.

“To win a grand final and Fever’s first Grand Final was really, really special to be a part of.”

Now at the pointy end of the season and Fever locking in their finals spot during Teague-Neeld’s milestone match, her focus is now set on repeating last year’s success.

“I think we’re really building into great form heading into finals,” she said.

“We play netball to do this, we want to play finals, we want to win finals and we want to win premierships, so it’s really exciting time.”

LAST time they met

Fever secures another one-goal thriller against Giants

West Coast Fever secured back-to-back one-goal thrillers when these sides last met in Round Two, walking away with a 74-73 win over the Giants at Ken Rosewell Arena.

Fever led by 11 goals at three quarter time but the Giants came out firing in the final quarter to even scores on the back of three supershots.

Moments That Mattered

With 52 seconds left on the clock, scores were level and Fever had the ball.

The team responded to the moment to control the ball and the game to feed Fowler for her 59th goal and gain a one goal lead.

The Giants had 17 seconds to score and with less than 10 seconds left Vice Captain Jess Anstiss came up with the crucial intercept to deny the Giants the chance to score and secure the points.

Quarter by Quarter

Q1: WCF 21 | GIANTS 20

The first quarter was a tight tussle as the Giants were boosted by the return of Jo Harten whose presence was big throughout the contest.

Trailing by a goal going into the Power Five, Fever took some control and Sasha Glasgow capitalise with two supershots. While Jhaniele Fowler continued her perfect start top the season with 16 goals at 100 per cent.

Q2: WCF 40 | GIANTS 37

Glasgow continued her influential play, supported by Alice Teague-Neeld and Sunday Aryang, who made two intercepts

The Fever controlled the second quarter and built a handy 10-goal lead with three minutes to play.

However, Giants gained the momentum in the Power Five, scoring four supershots to reduce the margin to three goals at the half.

Q3: WCF 63 | GIANTS 52

Anstiss’ move to Centre paid dividends as she helped Fever maintain control of the third quarter. While Captain Courtney Bruce pulled down two rebounds, one intercept and two deflections for the quarter.

Teague-Neeld and Glasgow continued to cause headaches for the Giants as they controlled the ball as Fever fed Fowler.

The teams traded goals for most of the third quarter but Fever maintained control to extend their lead to seven goals heading into the Power Five.

While the Giants again took advantage of the supershot, Glasgow matched the Giants three with three of her own as Fever outscored the Giants by four in the final five minutes.

Q4: WCF 74 | GIANTS 73

The fourth quarter was all the Giants as they came out firing and reduced the Fever’s lead to four goals heading into the Power Five.

The Giants scored three supershots to even the scores with less than a minute on the clock.

Fever responded to the moment and controlled the ball to allow Fowler to make a shot and gain a one-goal lead.

Then as the Giants were charging, Anstiss pulled out a crucial intercept with less than 10 seconds to deny the Giants the opportunity to score and secure the points away from home.

Match Preview

With finals locked in, West Coast Fever will be looking to build their form for finals, when they face the Giants at RAC Arena this Sunday in their final home match of the regular season.

Last Week

Fever faced a dangerous Sunshine Coast Lightning side at home last weekend in front of a record 10,764 fans who spurred their team on to win 69-65.

The home side got off to a strong start winning the first half by 10 goals. Verity Simmons impressed with her high work-rate while Jess Anstiss and Alice Teague-Neeld, playing her 100th National League game, completed a dominant centre court performance.

Early in the third quarter, Jhaniele Fowler slotted in her 5,000th Suncorp Super Netball Goal on her way to 54 Goals for the game.

Not even a spirited surge by the Lightning was enough to chase down Fever’s lead and while it came down to the dying minutes, the team in green were able to hold on.

Over on the East Coast, the Giants played the Swifts in the Sydney Derby, falling by five goals, 68-63.

Despite an early lead, the Giants soon succumbed to the Swift’s pressure as the top-of the-table side flexed their muscles and held steady. It wasn’t until the third quarter Power Five where Giants struck back, scoring five Super Shots to take the lead just before three-quarter time.

The Swifts took back control of the match in the last term, to secure their eighth straight win and ensure Giants could no longer reach finals.

Match Ups

Fever’s defensive duo of Courtney Bruce and Sunday Aryang will have their work cut out for them to stop the Giants’ Super Shot ability. Last time the sides met the Giants scored 15 Super Shots thanks to Jo Harten and Sophie Dwyer. Giants also proved the depth they possess last week as Matisse Letherbarrow scored four Super Shots in the third quarter.

On the other end of the court, Sasha Glasgow will be

looking to repeat her previous performance against the Giants as she recorded a season-high number of Goal Assists and Feeds. She’ll have to contend with Amy Parmenter and April Brandley, who both boast international experience.

There will also be an electrifying battle in the centre of the court as Simmons will face her counterpart in Jamie-Lee Price. Simmons played one of her best games of the season against the Lightning with 22 Goal Assists and three Pick Ups. Jamie-Lee Price also shone last week as she produced 30 Feeds and an Intercept.

Stats and Facts

Alice Teague-Neeld has had a stellar season so far this year and that is reflected in her numbers. She has recorded 293 Goal Assists so far this season, just 28 off her SSN record and 43 away from Fever’s SSN record. She has reached 28 Assists three times this season so could well break the side’s record before finals even start.

Fever’s defensive pressure will be important in this weekend’s game and last time the sides met it the team’s best performance in terms of Intercepts. Signs point to another quality display as last week Fever recorded a season-high 20 Deflections.

fowler passes 5,000 ssn goals

Jhaniele Fowler surpassed 5,000 Suncorp Super Netball goals when she put through her 36th goal during Fever’s 69-65 goal win over the Lightning last week.

It was in the fifth minute of the third quarter that a Verity Simmons’ pass found Fowler under the post, who was able to calmly convert the shot into a goal as the 10,764 strong crowd went wild.

The 33-year-old is the competition’s greatest shooters and is the highest SSN goal scorer of all time, with 5,018 Goals in the league.

This year, she has shot 648 goals at an eyewatering rate of 96 per cent, 124 more than the next best player.

Fowler begun her time in the National League with the Southern Steel in 2013 and immediately made her mark, winning the league’s Most Valuable Player that year.

When the league revamped into Suncorp Super Netball in 2018, Fowler found her home with West Coast Fever.

The milestone is just another remarkable achievement for the Jamaican Goal Shooter.

The 198-centimetre shooter has taken home the SSN’s Player of the Year Award a breathtaking five times and they have all been accompanied by the Leading Goal Scorer award.

In 2020, Fowler scored 979 goals at an accuracy of 94 per cent throughout the season, an all-time National League record.

Fowler has scored more than 700 goals in every full edition of the SSN she’s played and is showing no signs of slowing down.

The premiership player also holds the record for the most goals in a game, when she scored 70 Goals against the Swifts in Round 12 of 2020.

Fowler almost broke this record in last year’s grand final when she scored 67 against the Vixens. While this wasn’t enough for the all-time record, it did set a new benchmark for goals in a final.

This year, Fowler cracked past 7,000 National League goals in Round 1 against the Vixens and now sits second on the all-time National League goal scorer list with 7,601, behind only Romelda AikenGeorge.

Her focus will now be on helping her side make an impact in finals, with Fever’s top-four place now locked in.
