FROM THE COACH I’d like to welcome the Thunderbirds, led by their coach Tania Obst and Captain Hannah Petty back to Perth and congratulate them on their growth this season. The Thunderbirds came so close to toppling the Vixens last week, so they’ll come into this match full of confidence. We will need to be ready!

Dan Ryan

Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER Can you believe it’s the last round of the home and away season already? With all the uncertainty each week, Covid’s constant impact and the general unpredictability in the most competitive season in the history of SSN, it’s certainly been one to remember. Last weekend, we were able to secure second place on the ladder and confirm our spot in the finals, after a thrilling 1-goal win over the NSW Swifts. The defending champions threw everything at us, but it was so good to see the girls weather the storm and stand tall under such intense pressure.

In some great team news this week, we FINALLY welcome back our ViceCaptain Jess Anstiss into the game day 10. Jess has been battling a foot injury that has kept her off the court since round 7. She’s been doing everything in her power to be ready for this weekend and we are just so excited to have her back in the team. Also, the ever-tenacious Stacey FrancisBayman celebrates her 100th game milestone today. SFB has been with this club since 2017 and is such an integral member of this team. Congratulations Stace, an achievement you should be very proud of! So GREEN ARMY, it’s time to turn RAC Arena into the ‘Fever Fortress’ again. Make sure you give Stacey and Jess an extra loud cheer when they run out on court today. Go Fever!

Your Head Coach,

It was an important test and something that will hold us in good stead for what’s to come. We now know we will face the Melbourne Vixens in the Major SemiFinal on June 18 and we cannot wait for that opportunity. But before we turn our attention to finals, there’s one last challenge remaining to close out this phase of the season, and that’s a battle against the rapidly improving Adelaide Thunderbirds.

MATCH PREVIEW

THE SITUATION

It is the final round of the home and away season at RAC Arena. West Coast Fever will be aiming to build momentum heading into next weekend’s Major Semi Final against the Melbourne Vixens after cementing second place on the ladder last week. They will also be looking forward to welcoming Vice Captain Jess Anstiss back into the line-up as she returns from a foot injury. The Thunderbirds still have a chance to secure a top four place with a win on Fever’s home court and will enter the game with confidence after a narrow loss to the topplaced Vixens in Adelaide last week.

Jhaniele Fowler is set to break her own record for the most individual goals in a regular season. The 795-goal record set in 2020 at an average of 56.8 per game, is well within reach for Fowler who currently sits on 760 goals. Averaging 58.4 so far this season, the reigning League and West Coast Fever MVP only needs 36 goals to set the new scoring record, which is likely to occur in the second half of the game if she maintains her usual output. Fever’s 35th goal of the game will also break the team scoring record for a season of 924 goals, which was also set by Fever in 2021. Defender Stacey Francis-Bayman is also set to celebrate a milestone, reaching her 100th National League game after playing 90 SSN games for West Coast Fever and 9 ANZ Championship games for the Canterbury Tactix.

FRANCIS-BAYMAN REACHES 100-GAME MILESTONE West Coast Fever defender Stacey Francis-Bayman is set to play her 100th National League game when Fever host the Adelaide Thunderbirds at RAC Arena this Sunday. The English international has played 90 Suncorp Super Netball games for the Fever since joining the club in 2017, and previously played 9 games for Canterbury Tactix in the ANZ Championship between 2011 and 2012. Francis-Bayman said she was proud to reach the milestone ahead of this weekend’s Round 14 SSN fixture and looking forward to enjoying the moment with the Green Army. “To make 100 is incredibly special, especially given that 90% of them have been here with the Fever,” she said. “Of those 100, I think definitely the Grand Final and being able to host the Grand Final with Fever a few seasons ago is absolutely a career highlight… now I’m hoping to finish this year with an SSN Grand Final Premiership.” “I feel like this season has been another rollercoaster and to have been involved in every game so far is incredible and for it to culminate in 100 games in Round 14 of the season is amazing.

Stacey Francis-Bayman sharing a moment with captain Courtney Bruce.

“I will absolutely relish every single second of being able to walk out in front of the home crowd this weekend in the last round of the 2022 season.” In addition to the 99 National League games Francis-Bayman has played in Australia and New Zealand, she has also represented England on 77 occasions and played in the UK Netball Superleague for Team Bath for 10 years and Yorkshire Jets for a season in an impressive career that has spanned 17 years.

“I don’t just want people to remember me for the way in which I played on the netball court, I want people to remember me for who I am, what I stand for and the causes that I champion. “I’ve been very mindful over the past couple of seasons to really step into that advocacy space, to push and be proud of being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, having incredible pride and ownership over my mixed-race background and diversity. It’s been an incredible part of the journey.

Francis-Bayman made her senior debut for England in September 2010 against Jamaica after previously representing her country at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels. She was also a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups, and the winning 2011 World Netball Series team. She said she hoped her contribution both on and off the court would create a lasting legacy. “I think what I’ve come to realise is I have a really great story, I’ve had an incredible journey, and I think I have the confidence and ownership around the person that I am and what I stand for.

Shooting Stars participant designs Indigenous round guernsey for Claremont Womens Football Club Ahead of Indigenous round, the Claremont Womens Football Club (CWFC) presented the match-day guernsey to their players before training, with a special video from design competition winner and Halls Creek Shooting Stars participant, Skye. Skye’s artwork was chosen out of many submitted, its design standing out to the team at CWFC. In describing her artwork, Skye said “My design represents women gathering at the start of the wet season after a few rains, this is when the desert flowers begin to bloom. Women gather on country to find water holes and know they can go looking for Kangaroo and find the bush tucker, like bush onions and witchetty grubs.” Skye was thrilled to find out that her design had won. An avid football fan, she told the players through video link that she has big plans to make it down to Perth post school to pursue of dreams of playing AFL. Football Operations Manager at CWFC, Jodi Mills, spoke about how inspiring the guernsey is for the club and the players. “We were thrilled to choose Skye’s jumper design for our National Reconciliation Week round. The elements about women coming together to learn and share resonates with our club and teams, and we loved the references to her country. When we visited Shooting Stars in Kununurra, Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing last year we were excited to meet the participants and leaders and learn how the program is supporting young Indigenous girls, women, and communities

in regional WA. We hope to continue the relationship and work with Shooting Stars in the future. Together we can Be Brave and Make Change.” East Kimberley Regional Manager, Julie Dupen, is extremely proud of Skye’s accomplishments and how it inspires those around her. “It’s exciting to see Skye’s jumper design being worn proudly by the Claremont Women’s Football team during Indigenous round. Skye is an amazing young leader of Shooting Stars, and she represents herself, family, community, and Halls Creek District High school with pride”, she said. “Skye’s experience through this competition has shown our girls what is achievable outside of our remote town and to be proud to share their culture beyond our community. I want to thank Claremont Women’s Football Club for partnering with Shooting Stars to empower Aboriginal girls and women. It’s incredible to see a strong Indigenous young leader from Halls Creek share her story in Reconciliation Week, bringing everyone together so that we can all Be Brave and Make Change”.
