The past few seasons have posed many challenges for the team, but none more so for the players, than not being able to play in front of their families, friends, and fans on their home court. Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER After months of planning and 19 solid weeks of pre-season training, we have finally arrived at Round 1 of the 2022 Suncorp Super Netball season, and I could not be more excited.

Since starting my role as the new Head Coach of West Coast Fever in September last year, I can honestly say, I have loved every single day on the job so far and I’m so proud to be wearing the Fever green.

It’s a real privilege to join the club at such an exciting time. This team has been on an incredible journey in recent years and to have the opportunity to build upon the rock-solid foundations and legacy left behind by Stacey Marinkovich, is a real honour and something I am incredibly grateful for.

My team and I have worked tirelessly in the off season mapping out our plan for the road ahead. It’s been a thorough and careful process, identifying all the key areas that we need to consolidate, enhance, and evolve. There is always room for improvement and every

West Coast Fever return to RAC Arena for just their fifth home game since 2019 to meet the Sunshine Coast Lightning in this Round 1 Suncorp Super Netball clash.

West Coast Fever head coach Dan Ryan will enter RAC Arena in front of the Green Army for his first Suncorp Super Netball game for the club.

The Lightning will enter the contest with a new-look line-up to that which pulled off an upset win on Fever’s home court in Round 10 last year, with 2021 captain Karla Pretorius the most notable departure.

Midcourt star Jess Anstiss is set to play her first game as Vice Captain after being appointed to support Captain Courtney Bruce this season.

West Coast Fever’s side remains unchanged from last season with the exception of former Firebird Rudi Ellis at the defensive end.

The most recent game between the two sides was last season’s Semi Final, which saw Fever claim a 75-67 win over their Queensland based opponents in Brisbane.

New recruit Rudi Ellis is poised to make her debut for Fever after signing on for the 2022 season, should she take the court in Round 1.

WEST COAST FEVER CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF GROWTH West Coast Fever is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the club’s origins as the Perth Orioles and expanding its footprint in 2022 to integrate more than 60 athletes from across WA into a new club structure.

The Perth Orioles competed in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy from 1997 to 2007, before re-branding as the West Coast Fever in 2008, to compete in a new trans-Tasman competition.

Since the first Orioles game on Saturday April 12, 1997, the club has grown and evolved as a professional sporting franchise, competing as West Coast Fever in the ANZ Championship from 2008 to 2016 and Suncorp Super Netball league since 2017, including two Grand Final appearances.

West Coast Fever General Manager – Performance & Pathway Sue Gaudion said that a focus on sustained growth and future success, would see the club extend the structure of its talent pathway in 2022.

“Our club has a proud history as one of the founding teams in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy and we will continue striving to be the very best, by setting up a structure that will strengthen the club on its 25th anniversary and continue building towards our 50th anniversary and beyond,” Gaudion said.

“This new structure encompasses 17s and 19s West Coast Fever Futures Squads, which will receive education, training and development opportunities as the next generation of emerging talent.”

“The expansion of the club also includes re-branding Western Sting as West Coast Fever Reserves to represent WA at the Australian Netball Championships, and formalising the involvement of four elite men in our training environment,” she said.

The West Coast Fever Academy program will also be retained, seeing the overall number of athletes engaged with the club more than doubling to 64.

Players will be selected from the West Coast Fever 17s and 19s Futures Squads to represent WA at the National Championships each year.

In addition, regional and metropolitan academies will feed into the club, engaging approximately 500 netballers throughout WA in West Coast Fever Pod programs.

West Coast Fever will officially celebrate its 25th anniversary during next month’s Suncorp Super Netball Heritage Round.

Shooting Stars growth continues in South Australia Shooting Stars has expanded its footprint in South Australia, more than doubling the number of Aboriginal girls engaged in the program on its way to a whole-of-community approach.

In the second year of the South Australian pilot program in the regional community of Whyalla, the program has expanded from three local Primary Schools to now include Year 7 to 9 students at Whyalla Secondary College.

Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said it was exciting to see the continued growth and success of the program in reengaging Aboriginal girls positively in the school environment.

“Since establishing our pilot program in Whyalla with the support of the South Australian Department of Education and Minister for Education last year, it has already grown from 54 students and three staff to 114 students and six staff, which is a terrific result,” Haintz said.

“Our participants are showing early signs of improvement in attendance and most significantly with the support of Shooting Stars really show greater levels of engagement with learning.”

“We are now setting our sites on growing again next year and expanding the program further to engage more than 150 girls from Years 3 to 12.”

Based in host schools in regional and remote communities, Shooting Stars combines advocacy and support, engagement activities, rewards, and health and wellbeing sessions to strengthen participants’ confidence, cultural identity, and positive attitudes, while promoting their health and wellbeing.
