Meet The Seven Sisters

Seven Sisters Dreamtime Stories Many different mob have stories about the Seven Sisters. There are many different versions of the Seven Sisters story. This is one version. Long ago in the Dreaming there were Seven Sisters who were gathering food in the bush when they came across two hunters. They invited the men to share their food and drink but gradually realized that the men had fallen in love with the sisters, even though they were of the wrong skin group. The sisters, who did not want to break the traditional laws that forbade romantic relationships with the wrong skin groups, fled their camp with the men in hot pursuit.

The Ancestral Spirits, who saw what was happening, saved the sisters' honour by lifting them into the sky where they assumed the form of the stars that we know as the Seven Sisters. Now at night in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, you can see the Seven Sisters fleeing across the sky, still pursued but never to be caught by the two hunters.

The Seven Sisters were also known to the Ancient Greeks, who called them the Pleiades. The Pleiades were seven sisters who were traveling when they met the hunter Orion. Orion fell in love with the sisters and started chasing them. The king of the Greek gods, Zeus, saw what was happening and turned the sisters into doves. They flew into the sky and became the Pleiades constellation. Or what we call the Seven Sisters.

Seven Sisters Feelings Allira: I feel jealous when my cousins visit and they want to spend more time with my older sister than me. I feel proud when I cook food for everyone and they love it! I feel worried when my older brother goes out partying. I feel peaceful when my sister is braiding my hair.

Riana: I feel frustrated when I lose. I feel excited when I’m playing any kind of sport. I feel bored when I have to sit down for long periods of time. I feel calm when I’m learning a new skill, like how to bowl a cricket ball properly.

Darana: I feel angry when I read about the bad things that were done to Aboriginal people in the past. I feel brave when my dad tells me stories of my ancestors and about where we come from. I feel disappointed when some of my teachers don’t know much about Aboriginal history. I feel reflective when I’m reading a book.

Jannali: I feel confused when people don’t want to help me with a project I have planned. I feel proud when I can see how something that I have done makes a difference for my community. I feel shame when people tell me that I’m bossy. I feel kind when I help someone.

Tarni: I am very very good at feeling and naming all of my emotions, that’s why I’m the face of the feelings cards. Sometimes though, I can’t quite put my finger on how I’m feeling, which makes me feel anxious. I feel silly when I’m pampering myself and my friends with makeovers and manicures and we’re just yarning and telling jokes. I feel shame if I say something or do something that upsets someone else. I feel relaxed when I’m taking a bubble bath.

Kyliesha: I feel angry on Invasion Day. I feel happy when I am dancing – especially when I have the whole routine down. I feel lonely when my nan goes to hospital. I feel grateful when I’m painting with my nan and she’s telling me stories.

Wilara: I feel scared when we have to go into the city. I feel flexible when I’m out bush with my family and the options are fish, hunt, swim, or chill! I feel sad when I can’t go outside for a long time. I feel peaceful when I’ve got a line in and I’m sitting down waiting for a fish.

Did you know?

The bilby used to live across most of the arid and semiarid areas of mainland Australia. The bilby became extinct in New South Wales and southern South Australia sometime in the 1940s-1950s, and its distribution in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia got smaller and smaller. In Western Australia, the bilby is mostly only found in the Gibson, Little Sandy and Great Sandy Deserts, and parts of the Pilbara and the Kimberley. It also occurs across to the Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory, and there are small, separated subpopulations in Queensland.

The numbers of bilbies have been declining dramatically across Australia since European settlement. Predation by foxes, feral cat and wild dogs is considered to be the main cause of this ongoing decline. Other threats include: Competition with and habitat degradation by introduced herbivores (rabbits, cattle, camel); ¡ Inappropriate fire regimes; Climate change leading to a drier climate; Habitat loss and degradation due to mining and other developments; and Road mortality.

In Western Australia, bilbies are likely to become extinct unless we do something to help them.

Different mob would make coolamon out of different woods around Australia. For example Gooniyandi in the Kimberley would make theirs out of the helicopter tree (Gyrocarpus americanus) and Warlpiri people in Central Australia would make theirs out of the bean tree (Erythrina vespertilio).

Australia has about 140 species of land snake, and around 32 species of sea snakes have been recorded in Australian waters.

About 100 Australian snakes are venomous, although only 12 are likely to inflict a wound that could kill you. These include Taipans, Brown snakes, Tiger snakes, Death Adders, Black snakes, Copperhead snakes, Rough Scaled snakes as well as some sea snakes (include pictures) Most snake bites happen when people try to kill or capture them. If you come across a snake, don’t panic. Back away to a safe distance and let it move away. Snakes often want to escape when disturbed.

For all snake bites, call triple zero (000) for an ambulance Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage (show picture) If you can’t use a pressure bandage, because the bite is on the person’s chest or stomach, apply and keep constant firm pressure

Did you know that in the past, when Aboriginal people were bitten by snakes they would lie down in a hole and bury their bodies (not their heads). They would lie still for several days and allow their body to counteract the venom. It would take enormous physical, mental, and spiritual strength to overcome the poison. Not moving slows the spread of the venom.

That’s why today if you or someone you know is bitten, you should remain calm and still to slow the spread of the poison.

The Whadjuk Peoples of Perth call the Creation Serpent the Waagyl

This is the Waagyl sign found along the Bibbulum Track (insert a map of Australia with track demarcated) which guides hikers on the trek from Perth to Albany in Western Australia. The trek is about 1000km with campsites along the way. Hikers do this trek to push their personal physical and emotional boundaries, connect with Country and learn about themselves.

Sometimes when we have something difficult to do and we feel we can’t go on any longer... hikers encounter fatigue and challenges on their journey! Inside the snake write an encouraging message to a hiker who is a long way from home.

6.2 Design a Netball Uniform Activity

Week Seven Comic Strip Some boys called Riana names at lunch and wouldn’t let her join in a basketball game. Riana is crying. She feels disappointed and shame • The Seven Sisters take action!

• Allira and Tarni give Riana a big hug, then listen to her story. Riana begins to feel better.

• Kyliesha and Wilara show Riana some new dance moves. Riana feels calm now • Jannali and Darana tell the teachers, who talk to the boys Fill in the speech bubbles with what you think the sisters are saying.

Jannali is trying to get everyone to help her “clean up the town” after school initiative. Riana and Wilara don’t want to help, but instead of telling Jannali that, they tell her she’s “bossy” and exclude her from their group at recess. They whisper about her and laugh in class.

Jannali feels confused and a bit angry. She goes to the other Seven Sisters at lunch time (Kyliesha, Allira, Darana, and Tarni) and tells them what happened.

• The other girls all listen. Just sharing her story makes Jannali start to feel a bit better.

• Darana and Kyliesha give Jannali a big hug and commit to helping her after school. This makes Jannali feel proud.

• Allira can’t help with the clean up because she has to look after her little brother and sisters after school. But she said they can all come over to her house for a feed of tacos when they’re done. All the girls are excited about this!

• Tarni finds Riana and Wilara and asks them to come and talk to Jannali. She tells them that how they have treated Jannali is not ok. At first they don’t want to because they are shame and a bit worried about what the others will think of them. Tarni says that she understands how they feel but that they need to sort it out with Jannali.

• When they reach the main group, Jannali is feeling happy and excited. She is ready to forgive her friends. She says “If you have other things to do, that’s cool, Darana and Kyliesha are going to help me with the clean-up. Then we’re going to Allira’s for tacos.

But next time just tell me if you don’t want to help, you made me feel confused and angry when you left me out.” Riana says, “I’m sorry for calling you bossy and leaving you out, but I don’t want to help with the clean-up.” Wilara says: “Allira’s tacos, I’m coming to help!” and everyone laughs. Then she says: “But I’m sorry Jannali, that was mean to leave you out and call you bossy. Thanks for forgiving us.”

Marcia Ella-Duncan Position WD, C From La Perouse, Sydney, Marcia has traditional connection to the Walbunga people on the NSW Far South Coast, and kinship connection to the Bidigal, the traditional owners of the Botany Bay area • Marcia created history when she became the first Aboriginal person to represent Australia in netball when she took to the court against New Zealand in Christchurch in May, 1986.

• In 1988 Marcia was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to netball

Week Nine Netball Colour in Design One Page 9.1

Week Nine NAIDOC Netball Carnival culture to be showcased 9.2 The theme of the 2019 NAIDOC Netball Carnival will literally be in the hands of thousands of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers, when they hit the court for the annual carnival on July 10.

The Insurance Commission’s partnership with the NAIDOC Netball Carnival and Netball WA began in 2014, and Secretary Kane Blackman said it was an important message for all West Australians.

Thanks to a partnership with the Insurance Commission of Western Australia, promoting the Belt Up message, the carnival will this year feature a bespoke ball designed by Narrogin local and Shooting Stars participant, Shontae Jetta.

“By engaging directly with the netball and Indigenous communities, the Insurance Commission strives to raise awareness of the seat belt road safety message,” Blackman said.

The ball features footprints from an emu and a kangaroo, both native to the country and a food source, as well as the Aboriginal symbol which represents meeting places, and identifies when and where Aboriginal people come together as one.

An independent committee selected Shontae’s design, as it best represented the 2019 NAIDOC Week theme of Voice. Treaty. Truth.

“I wanted to take part in the NAIDOC Netball design competition to tell the story of my history and culture,” Jetta said.

“I wanted to represent my family and my school in a positive manner and step outside my capabilities.”

Netball WA Chief Executive Officer Simon Taylor said the ball was a fantastic addition to the carnival.

“We believe the NAIDOC Netball Carnival is one of the largest Indigenous sporting events in Australia, so we’re incredibly proud to host the carnival each year,” Taylor said.

“The day is always a wonderful celebration of Indigenous culture and achievement, so the addition of the bespoke ball is something special for all of our participants, coaches and support staff.”

“On behalf of Netball WA, I would like to congratulate Shontae on a truly special design.”

“This is important to the Insurance Commission, as not wearing a seat belt can significantly increase the extent of injuries sustained in a vehicle crash.”

“We know these netballs will be used with pride, and each of the teams will enjoy taking the message back to their respective communities.”

“I would also like to congratulate Shontae on a fantastic design that reflects the theme of NAIDOC Week 2019.”

Minister for Finance and Aboriginal Affairs, the Hon. Ben Wyatt MLA, said: “I would firstly like to congratulate Shontae on her fantastic design, it is truly impressive to see a young artist encapsulate the meaning of NAIDOC week,” Mr Wyatt said.

“I would also congratulate Netball WA for organising such a positive event which all participants will no doubt form lifelong memories from and their ongoing support of the Shooting Stars programs.”

“Finally, the work of Insurance Commission also deserves our recognition, they have a vitally important message to get out to young people and continue to do so in a positive and constructive manner.”

The 2019 NAIDOC Netball Carnival will be held at the State Netball Centre and Perth Netball Association on July 10.
