WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT We are again excited to welcome a number of participants from our No Limits Division, a wonderful competition for athletes with an intellectual disability, as well as a those playing in the Boys Exhibition Match. This year will see the Aboriginal All Stars compete for the first time with a team in the 17U and 14U Divisions. Importantly, this event is used for player talent identification, umpire testing and coach mentoring and I look forward to seeing many future stars on the court. But this weekend also serves a chance to welcome our netball family from all over the state, showcasing our commitment to advancing netball and communities. Grant Robinson President NETBALL WA

On behalf of the Netball WA Board and Executive, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships. It has been a rollercoaster year for everyone, but all of us have banded together to be one of the safest State’s in this country. West Australians have rallied together to support one another during this pandemic, and the netball community has been the greatest example of that. It is a testament to our resilience that we have been able to come together this weekend for our biggest netball event of the year, the Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships. The Championships is a fantastic platform to celebrate the diversity of our game, bringing together the most talented players, coaches, umpires and officials from all divisions of our Associations.

I would also like to acknowledge our Principal Partner the Gold Industry Group, as well as Healthway promoting the Fuel to Go & Play message, the Insurance Commission of WA, the University of Western Australia and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. We sincerely appreciate your support. This event is also only possible through the tireless efforts of Netball WA staff as well as the Town of Cambridge and Perth Netball Association. I take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your combined collaboration and professionalism in bringing this event to this point in such unprecedented times. Finally, I would like to congratulate all of our participants, coaches, umpires and officials for their participation in this year’s event and wish you all the best of luck for the competition ahead. The 2020 edition will feature 222 teams in 31 divisions and nine age groups from 29 Associations across the state.

WA FEVER ATHLETES ATTRIBUTE ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR KICKSTARTING THEIR NETBALL CAREERS Held annually since the 1950’s, the Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships has seen many netball stars pass through its gates since its inception. West Coast Fever Captain and Australian Diamonds athlete, Courtney Bruce represented her Association, Southern Districts, for two consecutive years at the Championships. “It was my first taste of an intense training environment, with multiple trainings in a week, giving me the opportunity to practice my skills and build that camaraderie and how to work in a unit more than anything,” said Bruce.

are the highlight of her Association Championships days. “When I first started playing netball, I didn’t know many people and I didn’t have a lot of friends outside of school,” said Stanton. “Participating in the Championships really allowed me to connect with a new group of people who have now become lifelong friends which is really amazing.” everyone would get their hair braided and just get together to play netball.” Fellow West Coast Fever teammate and WA local, Jess Anstiss also accredited the three-day tournament for igniting her netball journey after participating for six years.

This year’s Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships is set to take place this weekend at the Wembley Sports Park. The 2020 edition will feature the most talented players across 222 teams from 29 Associations coming together from across the state to battle it out.

“Having the opportunity to play games in a condensed period teaches you how to build on your performance in a short amount of time. Being able to back up each game and get that connection has definitely helped me get to where I am today,” said Anstiss. Cementing itself as an integral part of the WA Athlete pathway, the Championships are also a great opportunity to develop off the court too. Shooting Stars launches holistic wellbeing program Shooting Stars has launched its Seven Sisters program which provides Aboriginal girls and women with opportunities to develop positive social and emotional wellbeing skills and preventative mental health strategies.

“Through our Yarning Circles, our organisation was able to recognise that bullying was a recurring theme as a barrier for school attendance across our sites and that our participants struggled with regulating their emotions,” said Whitau.

The ten-week program uses netball as a space to teach participants emotional regulation strategies. Participants will learn how to recognise and name their emotions, develop strategies for cheering themselves up or calming down and learn how to build healthy relationships, both on and off the court.

“The Seven Sisters program was developed to equip our participants with the skills to respond and adapt to emerging challenges as they progress through the life course.”

The program has been developed in line with Aboriginal concepts of health, which applies a holistic model of connection to seven different spheres of life: culture, land, physical self, mental self, community, family/kinship and ancestors/spirituality. The program is being piloted with 16 participants in Narrogin across the two primary schools and run by three Noongar women, Seven Sisters Coordinator Jade McGuire, Narrogin Program Assistant Taya Olman and Narrogin Trainee Latia Kickett. Shooting Stars Research Manager, Rose Whitau said it is great to see this project come to fruition.

“The program incorporates seven characters who personify a connection to each of the seven spheres. Whilst participants will affiliate with at least one character, the program works to ensure they develop strategies to connect with every aspect on the sphere wheel.” “We are so grateful to the two primary schools in Narrogin for enabling us to launch the pilot program.” Shooting Stars plans to implement the Seven Sisters program to all primary school Shooting Stars sites in 2021, with the hope to launch an adapted version for Shooting Stars high school participants the following year and then open the program up to regional Netball WA clubs.
