Welcome to the 2023 Gold Industry Group
West Australian Netball League Grand Finals and congratulations to the clubs, teams, umpires and officials set to participate across the three divisions.
Firstly, a huge thank you to our competition Naming Rights Partner, the Gold Industry Group, for their ongoing support of the competition and Netball in Western Australia. GIG has shown great commitment to our sport, which is vital to its continued sustainability and success from the grassroots right up to the elite level.
Thank you to all the GIG WANL clubs, umpires, officials and volunteers for their commitment and hard work to ensure this season has been one of the best in recent memory. With COVID-19 hopefully well and truly behind us, it has been refreshing to see games go ahead uninterrupted and with excellent crowds bringing great atmosphere to the games, each and every week.
This year marked the second year with our broadcast partner Kayo Sports, which saw our matches streamed on the Kayo Freebies platform and the steaming numbers have been extremely impressive. Prior to the commencement of the final series, we already had more than more than 50,000 viewers across the competition, which has further elevated the GIG WANL competition. We also want to acknowledge our Broadcast Supplier Brightside Live who have done an amazing job creating our stream each and every week.
A new element to the season was the Men’s Rapid Round, where the teams played a hybrid version of Fast5 netball which was well received by players, coaches, officials
and audiences both at the Gold Netball Centre and on Kayo Freebies.
Finally, I want to wish the clubs taking part in today’s Grand Finals all the best. A lot of work goes in week-in, week-out to preparing sides and today is your chance to take centre stage and shine.
After missing out on the Grand Final last season, the West Coast Warriors will be looking to defeat the reigning premiers the Roar in the Men’s Grand Final. A premiership win to the Roar will see them move next to the Warriors with three Men’s premierships each.
In the 20/U Division, the second placed Demons and third placed Comets both got past the reigning premiers to secure their places in the big game. They split their two regular season games so I am sure their clash will be a great battle.
The final GIG WANL match of 2023 sees the reigning champions the Western Roar seek to defend their title against the Comets. The Roar had to get there the hard way again this season after they lost the Qualifying Final to the Comets and then defeated the Sharks on Tuesday night to secure the chance for back-to-back titles.
The Comets have never won a premiership in any division, so I am sure that will inspire both their 20/U and Open sides to push just that little bit harder today.
The three contests we will witness all have the characteristics to be great finales so, on behalf of Netball WA, I hope everyone enjoys today’s grand finals and may the best teams win.

As naming rights partner of the West Australian Netball League, the Gold Industry Group’s investment has helped find, train and develop the next generation of Netballers, while growing the sport in regional communities across the State.
Like the Gold Industry, Netball in our country has a long rich history. Together we have seen the growth and development of the competition, including growing the number of teams, expanding the games reach through a new broadcast partnership with Kayo, improved in venue experience for players and fans and broader marketing and promotion of the league.
My favourite initiative so far has been launching the first ever Heart of Gold WANL Club Person of the Year Awards at last year’s Jill McIntosh Award Night, providing a gold medal which is symbolic of this community focused partnership, from grassroots to the elite game. We look forward to present these again at this year’s event!
Congratulations to all the teams for a fantastic 2023 GIG WANL season and all the best to the teams who are playing in the Grand Final!

Qualifying Final, Roar 69 defeated Warriors 56
Round 12, Roar 61 defeated Warriors 45
Round 9, Warriors 37 defeated Roar 35 Round 6, Roar 60 defeated Warriors 47 Round 3, Roar 72 defeated Warriors 36
The Men’s Division GIG WA Netball League Grand Final will be contested by two of the Division’s most successful clubs, the Warriors and Roar.
The Warriors have won three titles so far and the Roar two since the Men’s Competition commenced in 2018.
Roar will fancy themselves to match the Warriors’ record as they have been almost untouchable this season.
They have only lost once and that loss came at the hands of the Warriors in Round Nine during the Rapid Round section of the season.
Warriors were able to capitalise on the rule changes and sneak home for a two-goal win in a thrilling game.
Apart from that match, Roar have had bragging rights over the Warriors, winning the other four match ups by at least 10 goals.
The two most recently met in the Qualifying Final where the Roar ran away by 13 goals to secure their Grand Final berth.
Despite the final margin, the game remained close for the first two quarters and will have
given the Warriors confidence they can match the Roar if they are at the top of their game.
The game also proved that the Warriors would need to find a way to maintain pressure on the Roar for all four quarters.
One of the Warriors’ greatest strengths is in their height in the offensive circle with the towering figures of West Coast Thunder Men’s player and West Coast Fever Training Partner Jerome Gillbard and his Thunder shooting partner Matt Brown.
In their Preliminary Final match against the Comets, the Warriors were able to dominate the midcourt and they will have to replicate this effort to be able to upset the Roar on Grand Final day.
Roar have been ruthless in their play this season and are extremely effective at finding Max Denholm in the circle. The shooter has been a safe pair of hands with the ball too, scoring 465 Goals at 95 per cent.
Fever Training Partners Daniel Cools and Dylan McPherson will also be looking to ensure they use their experience and skill to impact the contest.

Round 12, Comets 49 defeated Demons 47 Round 1, Demons 46 defeated Comets 34
Both the Demons and Comets had to secure underdog wins during their finals campaign to book their place in the Grand Final. Now they’re here, both teams will be looking to secure one last win for the season and lift the 20/U Division GIG WA Netball League trophy.
Demons finished the regular season in second place and gave themselves the opportunity to go straight to the Grand Final. They took the chance with both hands, defeating the previously unbeaten Roar by a single goal.
Demons were pushed to their limit as Roar regularly started quarters well and looked like running away with the game at points.
When their backs were against the wall the Demons found ways to reassert themselves in the game. Going into the final quarter they faced a two-goal deficit but quickly turned it into a lead.
After some back and forth, the Demons were able to score the final goal to go ahead by one and when Roar threw the ball over their offensive baseline, the game was sealed.
The Comets had a tougher route to the big dance, having to play in the both the Elimination and Preliminary Finals. Both games were extremely tight with the
Comets securing a two-goal win against the Sharks, followed by a one-goal win versus Roar.
In the two games the Demons and Comets have played this year they have both won one each.
Way back in Round One, it was the Demons who recorded a dominant 12-goal win to kick their season off in style.
More recently, it was the Comets who scraped over the line in Round 12 to secure a come from behind win.
Despite trailing by four at the final break, the Comets took their game up a gear and secured the victory by just two goals.
There are plenty of players from both teams to keep an eye on in the final.
Comets possess some star power in their line-up with WA 17/U Captain and Australia Fast5 Youth Commonwealth Games representative Clara Wigley likely lining up in Centre and Jamaica Jauncey and Madeleine Ash in the offensive circle.
The same goes for the Demons who have the competition’s highest goal scorer in Chelsea Cook. She has sunk 475 Goals this season, 41 better than the next best player.

Qualifying Final, Comets 64 defeated Roar 62 Round 13, Roar 63 defeated Comets 53 Round 6, Roar 53 defeated Comets 48
The GIG WA Netball League Open Division Grand Final will see both teams looking to achieve glory which would mean two very different things for each club.
For the Roar, it will be the chance to go back-to-back and win a second premiership in as many years.
The side has been a force to be reckoned with this year and have barely put a foot wrong. They only lost two games in the regular season, one against the Demons and the other against Rangers.
For the Comets, the allure of the club’s first ever piece of silverware will be spurring them on.
After the regular season the team finished in second place, only one win away from the Roar.
Apart from a Round Seven loss to the Sharks, the thorn in their side has largely been the Roar.
Roar took bragging rights into the Qualifying Final match up, winning both regular season meetings between the teams this season. Roar only won the first game by five goals but finished 10 ahead in the more recent Round 13 match.
Ahead of the Final, the Roar were on a seven-game winning streak and in that time built up a superior percentage of 143.
They did suffer a blow however, with Zoe Cransberg suffering a foot injury which
ruled her out of finals action.
Despite the history and form, it was the Comets who were able to win the Qualifying Final and record their first victory of the season against the Roar. It was an extremely close affair with the game going to extra time and then to sudden death as not even 74 minutes of Netball could split the two sides.
The Comets showed great resolve after conceding an early deficit of eight goals at quarter time, showing how dangerous the Roar side can be.
As the Comets came back level, neither team could grab hold of the match and at the fourth quarter siren, the Roar put through the equalising goal to keep the game alive.
The game eventually went to sudden death after extra time and the Comets quickly recorded a turnover which was converted to win the game.
With the Roar forced to take the long path to the Grand Final, like they did in 2022, they showed up in commanding form in the Preliminary Final. They quickly built a lead against the Sharks and managed to hold it despite a slight mid game scare.
Both teams will firmly believe they can lift the trophy come the end of the Grand Final and if the finals series is anything to go by, it is sure to be an enthralling game from start to finish.
Last year, 77 people who weren’t wearing a seat belt were killed or seriously injured on WA roads.
That represents over seven netball teams.
They could have been your teammates, your family or your friends.
Don’t be a statistic.
