The month of June is important for us here at Net Nine Nine!
This is not just Youth Month to us, but a period we dedicate to uplifting the livelihoods of our people in South Africa.
In June last year, we highlighted a successful first half of the year, with our youth being the beneficiaries in the industry.
Our priority has always been to migrate our young adults to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and to support institutions with interests in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Now, with over 75 schools connected with free internet — up from 21 this time last year — this is a monster achievement within just 12 months.
We are racing against time to hit the 100 mark by July 2025, and this is possible in our endeavour to live up to the promises we made when we started this brand: to change lives and create heroes of the future.
To add a cherry on top, on 31 May 2025, we will officially launch our second school to operate fully under a computer lab sponsored by Net Nine Nine, following the Mandisa Shiceka Mathematics, Science and ICT School of Specialisation in Kagiso.
The Mandisa Shiceka school is more focused on mining, and our collaboration with them has enhanced teaching and learning methods, as they continue to maintain a 100% pass rate for their Grade 12 learners.
Now, it’s all systems go in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, where we are finalising a state-of-the-art computer lab at the Wood & Raw Primary School. The lab includes 30 computers, two laptops, and two computer printers, situated deep in the Dumisani Makhaye Village.
The launch of this computer lab is well-timed as we enter Youth Month. Our kiddos will grow from the primary level armed with essential computer knowledge, enhancing their chances of competing within the robotics and coding curriculum.
The computer lab will be visually appealing, educational, and learner-friendly, promoting readiness for the 4IR and AI by the time learners reach high school. Most importantly, their basic computer knowledge will encompass fundamental terms and concepts that enable understanding and interaction with computers — our ultimate goal.
Beyond this, we are demonstrating our commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for South African youth — both those sitting at home without employment and those who aspire to venture into business. We will be introducing more programmes as time goes on, spreading across the country.
In Botshabelo and Thaba-Nchu, Free State, at the beginning of June 2025, we will be holding a seminar where a group of women will gather to learn more about starting businesses. We have invited government officials, the private sector, and other relevant institutions to manage these programmes and offer a range of support — from mentorship to training and business incubation — aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and promoting business growth.
Let’s not forget — June is a significant month, commemorating the role of young people in the fight against apartheid and the Soweto Uprising of 1976. Today, we honour the champions who lost their lives during the uprising and their struggle for freedom and equal education.
Oh, by the way — congratulations to everyone here at Net Nine Nine for working extremely hard to ensure this digital magazine publishes the best internal news under the sun! With that, I say halala to a BIG one-year anniversary — here’s to many more years ahead.
WE CHARM UMLAZI WITH BIG SCREEN! KZN SCHOOLS FEEL THE WARMS OF NET99! SPORTS FEVER HITS UMLAZI!
Thank you, Umlazi, for an incredible, powerful, and emotional welcome to South Africa’s second-biggest township after Soweto.
Net Nine Nine’s invasion of Umlazi, like a newborn entering the world, was overwhelmingly joyous, filled with intense love, and a profound sense of transformation — where the fibre network service provider was made to feel right at home.
The historic journey on 3 May 2025 started with a sense of anticipation and excitement, and was met with a growing realisation that life had been irrevocably changed when we adopted the entire sections of Umlazi — who are now buzzing with glee thanks to the superfast internet connection.
In a jamboree that blended community celebration with corporate ambition, Net Nine Nine made a grand entrance into the local business scene during the official launch at Musa’s Car Wash and Chesanyama in D-Section.
The theme of the day was centred around the Soweto Derby — a football clash between two of South Africa’s biggest PSL teams, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs — who met in a Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium. Net Nine Nine hosted an openair big screen viewing event in the heart of Umlazi on a warm Saturday afternoon.
The launch drew a sizeable crowd of excited residents, eager not only to watch the high-
stakes soccer match, but also to witness the birth of Net Nine Nine in Umlazi — a brand that vows to invest in the community’s future, with locals set to benefit from the network provider.
In fact, five schools — Swelihle Secondary School, Maphumuzana Primary School, Ekuthuthukeni Special School, Umgijimi Primary School, and Zwelisithembiso Secondary School — are already reaping the rewards of Net Nine Nine being in their hood.
There was a vibrant mix of sports fever and community togetherness as Net Nine Nine staff rolled up their sleeves at Musa’s Car Wash, joined by company executives including Chief of Staff Nicholas Thipe, Chief Operations Officer Andrew Cohoe, Head of Marketing Richard Genlloud, and Huawei officials — no strangers to township life — who graced the occasion.
A massive big screen connected to SuperSportTV, a professional sound system, stadium-style seating under shaded gazebos, disco lights, and top-tier deejays created a mini-soccer arena. Net Nine Nine’s Zoleka Mashiane and Sizwe “Pastor Mbhombho” Magwaza drove the crowd into a frenzy.
Umlazi is now on a tech-driven path, with a sole aim of revolutionising access to digital technology — creating unity and making everyday life easier for the people.
WE CHARM UMLAZI WITH BIG SCREEN! KZN SCHOOLS FEEL THE WARMS OF NET99! SPORTS FEVER HITS UMLAZI!
Back to the game, which was crystal clear on screen — there were oohs and aahs with every goal attempt, and groans when Pirates scored the winning goal to lead 2–1. Chiefs fans felt heartbroken near the final whistle after one of their own, Bradley Cross, was shown a red card.
But after the game, the entire event ended in high spirits — with admiration expressed for Net Nine Nine and excitement about what the ISP has done for the township. Many residents remarked that they hadn’t had this much fun in a long time.
Thipe couldn’t hide his elation at the fact that over 60 000 homes in Umlazi will be connected with fibre internet, and that schools will benefit — not to mention the employment opportunities created by Net99.
“It’s beautiful! The reception was very warm. The people have been waiting for us to come into their homes — it’s a historical moment. We’ve created jobs for the young ones in Umlazi. They’re the ones building the infrastructure. Taxi operators have welcomed us by offering their workspaces to brand and supply their clients with internet while waiting for their next journey.
4
“We were welcomed here, despite the notion that it’s a difficult, politically challenged area.
“We at Net99 are thankful. We knew we had to have Umlazi. This tells you the story — an indication that we’re not a fly-bynight operation. The store will operate like a regional office, under Regional Manager Robert Nene.”
Once known as Blesberg, Thaba Nchu – meaning “Black Mountain” – lies just 63km from Bloemfontein. This historic town has now joined countless other townships across seven provinces in being connected by South Africa’s best unlimited fibre internet service: Net Nine Nine.
But Thaba Nchu is more than just another township. It is widely regarded as the spiritual homeland of the Basotho and Batswana people, known for its deep cultural roots to the Sotho and Rolong clans, who have inhabited the region for centuries.
For many young people in this rural town, internet access has long been a challenge. Until recently, residents had to travel 17km to Botshabelo just to find a stable connection— still not on par with what Net Nine Nine now offers.
With its affordable, accessible, and high-quality fibre internet, Net Nine Nine has expanded to Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo. The latter has been live since April 2025, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
From Technician to Store Coordinator
Samuel Mothibeli, Store Coordinator for Net Nine Nine Thaba Nchu, started just nine months ago at the Thabong store. A native of Riebeeckstad in Welkom, Mothibeli is also an entrepreneur, running a small stationery business called Offica Suppliers. He holds a Technical and Electrical Engineering qualification from a Free State TVET College.
Now based at the Bahlabani Media Centre, Mothibeli believes the community will respond in numbers. “Clients will flock to our store daily, seeking a better life—and they’ll leave with smiles,” he says.
Mothibeli believes Net Nine Nine is more than just a service provider. “We’re selling service and emotion,” he says. “When your internet is down, or your banking app won’t work during a crisis, it’s frustrating. Many people are overpaying for unstable services, and that causes stress. But when we offer reliable fibre at reasonable prices, people feel emotionally relieved. That relief is what we sell.”
He continues:
“Unemployment is high. When young people see Net99 arriving in their township, it represents an opportunity. That opportunity can transform lives. When people feel seen, heard, and helped—they’re emotionally happy. And
that’s what matters.”
He notes that many in Thaba Nchu have long felt excluded due to poor connectivity and proximity to Lesotho. Net Nine Nine has brought a new sense of inclusion and hope.
Grassroots Engagement
“Our activations stretch across townships,” Mothibeli says. “We do door-to-door visits, distribute flyers, engage on social media, and use multimedia platforms to connect with the community.”
Mothibeli began as an independent contractor in 2024, helping with technical ticket bookings at the Thabong store. His dedication led to a promotion as Store Coordinator.
“My passion for this company is huge,” he adds. “I help clients, support staff, run systems, and manage the store. Based on enquiries alone, I expect all of Thaba Nchu to be connected soon.”
Local Stewardship and Emotional Impact
Itumeleng Motlhabane, a steward at the Thaba Nchu store, hails from Mokwena Location and has been with the company for three months. Previously a real estate agent, Motlhabane sees his role as community-focused: ensuring installations are done correctly, escalating queries, and treating clients with dignity.
“Net Nine Nine is giving back to the people—but at a fair price,” he says. “We’ve waited decades for this kind of service. Now, it’s finally here. There are roughly 200,000 homes that could benefit.”
He adds:
“Albert Oosthysen (CEO) and Nicholas Thipe (Chief of Staff) saw our struggle and responded. There are no contracts. That’s what people love. This isn’t just business—it’s deeply personal.”
Growing the Brand in Botshabelo
Karabo Mofokeng, Botshabelo’s Store Coordinator, has been with the company for two years. Previously a Sales Agent in Rocklands, she is proud of her team and the impact they’re making.
Great things come to those who wait. And for many township schools across South Africa, the wait for meaningful change in digital education may finally be over — as Net Nine Nine steps in like manna from heaven.
The rollout of free fibre internet to schools is not just about helping learners and teachers surf the net — it’s about reimagining how teaching and learning should be done in the modern era. And with 77 schools already connected across six provinces, Net Nine Nine is now eyeing its 100th connection, projected for July 2025.
Back in 2024, Net Nine Nine had just 21 schools connected. Fast forward one year, and the ISP has grown that number by over 266% — an extraordinary achievement for a company turning just five years old this September.
More than just a number, these connections are transforming under-resourced schools, many from previously disadvantaged communities. Early signs already point to improved academic performance, with high-speed fibre helping to bridge the digital divide.
Where are the schools?
Net Nine Nine’s powerful 1 Gig fibre connection has already reached schools in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, North West, and Free State, with the rollout now heading into the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
School principals across the country have flooded Net Nine Nine’s inbox with requests to be next on the list — and the Johannesburg-based ISP is currently evaluating feasibility for further expansion.
Why
In 2015, then-Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi introduced the Paperless Classroom Project — a bold move that aimed to digitise schools. A decade later, many schools are still struggling to keep up, largely due to lack of infrastructure, funding, and access to affordable data.
Net Nine Nine’s school fibre project aims to change that — not with promises, but with action.
By June 2025, the company will officially launch and hand over a fully equipped computer lab at Wood and Raw Secondary School in Empangeni, KwaZuluNatal — a school that has had smartboards but no connectivity. For learners and teachers, this is more than just a long-awaited upgrade. It’s a new chapter.

Net Nine Nine’s school fibre project isn’t just about internet. It’s about access, equity, and empowerment — one school at a time.
The Unshakable Pillars of Strength Gather to Rock the Nation
In a country that so often demands resilience, adaptability, and unwavering grit, a certain kind of woman rises above the rest — Imbokodo, as they’re called in South Africa. Not loud, not boastful — but steady, strong, and everpresent.
These women are the grinding stone — the rocks — who shoulder the weight of families, businesses, and communities.
It’s no exaggeration to liken hardworking women to the foundational forces behind thriving homes and successful companies. Their contributions — often invisible — shape futures with incredible grace and resolve.
Take the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, for example. Known as the “Mother of the Nation,” she exemplified what it meant to be the cornerstone of both her family and the fight for justice. She was an anti-apartheid activist, wife, mentor, and politician who served in Parliament from 1994 to 2003, and again from 2009 until her passing. She was also the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture from 1994 to 1996. Her legacy endures in the professionals she mentored and inspired.
Now, Net Nine Nine is proud to launch the Women Economic and Social Empowerment Programme, aligned with the upcoming pre-launch of our Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu stores.
These pre-launch events, titled Net99 EreMosadi Ke Nako!, will take place from May to June, between 10:00 and 13:30, at the following venues:
• Botshabelo Section H Community Hall
• haba Nchu Community Hall
The Net Nine Nine Events Department will coordinate both events.
The Goal?
To empower women through:
• Fibre internet education — why every home should have it
• Starting and registering a business
• Understanding business basics
• Connecting with other local entrepreneurs and building mutual support
Various officials from business sectors will be in attendance, ready to guide and assist women in their ventures.
“Net99 believes in giving opportunities and transforming the lives of our communities. With this event, lives will be changed. This is a tool to achieve business excellence — while we prelaunch our fibre offering, we’ll also give local entrepreneurs a platform to network, engage, and share their journeys. We’ll spend time visiting each stall, learning about each product, and supporting one another,” says Zoleka Mashiane.
A Q&A session will be held to address businessrelated challenges, and relevant government departments will be present to guide attendees on business registration processes.
By night, a woman is often the steady hand that keeps her family grounded — juggling teenage chaos, caring for elderly parents, and managing daily demands with calm determination. Her strength doesn’t come from titles or applause, but from deep emotional intelligence, tireless commitment, and the wisdom to lead or support as needed. Mosadi, you are a rock.

Net Nine Nine is fast becoming a beacon of hope in South African townships, lifting communities from the ground up through the power of connectivity and entrepreneurship. With its expanding fibre internet network and integrated business improvement (IBI) model, the closed-access ISP is building more than just infrastructure – it’s building futures.
Operating in eight provinces and across 15 stores nationwide, Net Nine Nine is empowering entrepreneurs with sustainable business opportunities rooted in the telecommunications sector. By integrating local entrepreneurs into its operations, the company fosters efficient, cohesive, and competitive community enterprises.
Today, over 180 entrepreneurs across the country are actively living out their business dreams – a promise Net Nine Nine made before laying a single cable: to build with the people, for the people. This includes main contractors, subcontractors, resellers, transport providers, and other professionals essential to the network’s rollout and expansion.
Local suppliers have also felt the impact. Whether it’s bulk product orders from spaza shop owners or sourcing creative services like mural art and billboard installations, Net Nine Nine’s support of community vendors is tangible and inclusive.
The entrepreneurship programme is about more than just job creation. It unites various business functions and processes to build a streamlined, empowered local economy – one where decisionmaking is decentralised, efficient, and deeply community-aligned.
In every region where Net Nine Nine operates, main contractors are expected to include local subcontractors, who often go on to employ over 40 workers each. Each region also hosts around four active resellers, who together create opportunities for up to 20 local youth. Transportation contracts and other support services further boost local employment.
This is the Net Nine Nine culture: bold, visionary, and proudly rooted in its motto, “Be a Hero.” Every installation is more than infrastructure – it’s a wave of change, driven by the community and for the community.
Initially envisioned as a way to bridge the digital divide, the company has become a symbol of economic transformation in townships historically overlooked by traditional development initiatives. The results speak for themselves. From Kagiso to Botshabelo, township entrepreneurs are not only surviving – they’re thriving.
“This has changed my life,” said one entrepreneur from Kagiso. “When a young person sees someone from their street running a successful business, it plants the seed that they can do it too.”
And that seed is growing. Interest in entrepreneurship is spreading from one local to another. People are beginning to recognise their own potential – and they’re falling in love with business.
Because at Net Nine Nine, entrepreneurship isn’t just about making money. It’s about dignity, ownership, and the belief that you can own your future.
Net Nine Nine’s Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Cohoe, brought a powerful message of purpose and commitment to the opening of the new Umlazi store at KwaMnyandu Shopping Centre on 2 May 2025. As is tradition at every Net Nine Nine store launch, the event included the ceremonial reading and signing of the company pledge – a moment that left new staff both inspired and emotional.
Cohoe reminded the team that this pledge is not just symbolic, but a binding commitment made by every Net Nine Nine employee at every location.
“This is about living the company motto – Be a Hero,” he told the team. “It’s about doing your best for the company, your community, and the country at large.”
The pledge, framed and displayed proudly on the wall of each store, is a tangible sign of Net Nine Nine’s core values: affordable, reliable internet access, community upliftment, and free fibre connectivity for schools. But more than that, it serves as a daily reminder of the role each staff member plays in building a better South Africa.
As Cohoe read the pledge aloud, the room fell silent –a mix of pride, emotion, and resolve settling over the group:
“I pledge to inspire excellence and serve with professionalism and empathy, ensure that my clients, community, and colleagues are treated with respect and dignity.
Lend a helping hand wherever needed. Promote success through empowerment, upliftment, and education so that those around me are inspired to greatness.
Give my best to the company, my colleagues, and my community so that my attitude and efforts can inspire others.
Generate trust by providing meaningful, transparent, and hopeful service to those around me.
Promote the success of others and celebrate them as heroes too. I pledge to be a Net99 hero.”
The reading was followed by applause, and then the heartfelt moment where staff members took turns signing their pledges – a powerful commitment now enshrined in each workspace.
Speaking the following day, a visibly moved Cohoe reflected on the experience: “I’ve fallen in love with Umlazi – the energy here is incredible. We didn’t know what to expect when we started, but this township has far more potential than the data could have told us. There are over 60,000 homes here – it’s a massive opportunity.”
But Cohoe was quick to clarify that the transformation isn’t one-sided.
“It’s not Net Nine Nine changing Umlazi,” he said. “It’s Umlazi changing itself. We’re just creating a pathway and walking alongside.”
He also praised the Events Marketing team for flawlessly executing the store launch in a region often marked by political challenges.
“The set-up was beautiful. But what truly stood out for me is that everything – every detail – was local. Local businesses, local suppliers. That’s the Net Nine Nine way: bringing opportunities to the people.”
And with a smile, he concluded: “This won’t be my last visit to Umlazi.”
