WE CHAMPION “EQUAL RIGHTS’’ FOR ALL SOUTH AFRICANS!
Phew, there’s a lot happening at Net Nine Nine! There’s no easier way to summarise this in any way, shape, or form.
Firstly, let me again, for the umpteenth time, express my gratitude and extend my condolences to the families and friends of all the 249 victims of the famous Sharpeville Massacre, which occurred on 21 March 1960. A reported 69 people were fatally shot and 180 injured, including 29 children.
This is why we annually commemorate this tragic day in South Africa’s history, which is known today as Human Rights Day. It will remain a part of us for eternity, and this is why we, as South Africans, must stand together as we push towards the growth of this country.
At Net Nine Nine, we are playing our part in changing lives.
Who would have thought South African townships would be fitted with fibre internet today? Me neither!
Today, the previously disadvantaged are competing against first-world countries in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). With artificial intelligence (AI) becoming increasingly prevalent, township communities are now able to compete on a global scale.
I say this without mincing words, as we are in nearly
20 townships across the country, and the number keeps growing. We are now painting KwaZulu-Natal with our famous colours – dark sea blue, coral, and sea breeze –a vibrant, complementary, and balanced palette.
All our ducks are lined up in a row in Umlazi, and they will soon be switched on. But first, Empangeni will go live on 20 March, and our crew will be there on the weekend of Human Rights Day to spend time with our people.
I cannot wait to interact with the people of Empangeni, as well as those in Umlazi – South Africa’s secondbiggest and historic township after Soweto – and they love us!
To add a cherry on top, we will be connecting all 18 schools in Empangeni, both primary and secondary, as well as those in Umlazi that truly deserve it.
Most importantly, we will be growing the economy of the area and bringing employment to over 50 people from the community.
You see, the urgent need for equal rights in Mzansi is critical, just as Peter Tosh once narrated in the famous Get Up, Stand Up album.
At Net Nine Nine, we believe education is key to empowering our children with a glimpse of history, and that can only be possible through internet connectivity – which is our speciality – and we are doing that with aplomb.
Lastly, to those preparing for their respective Easter Weekend pilgrimages, good luck.
Peace be upon you all, Kgotso!

PILOT OF HER OWN DESTINY!
Have you ever attended a Net Nine Nine event?
Net Nine Nine is fast becoming every community’s favourite, with stylish and vibrant events ranging from arts, sports, education, music, and food festivals to activations, to mention just a few. This is notwithstanding store launches that prelude the actual operational business plans at every shopping mall where we are based.
If you’ve ever arranged an event – be it a wedding, funeral, graduation, traditional ceremony, or any other kind of function – then you’ll know the hectic challenges that come with making it a success.
But not for Net Nine Nine’s Events Specialist, Nomvula Mosiea-Tiya. She takes pride in her work to such an extent that she goes beyond the call of duty to ensure that Net Nine Nine clients are well taken care of and that she sells the brand exceptionally well to its people.
Mosiea-Tiya was in the events industry long before she joined Net Nine Nine two years ago from an airline career. She’s no upstart when it comes to piecing together small puzzles to create an artistic sculpture that attracts attention.
Now in its fifth year this September, Net Nine Nine has been the biggest contributor to sponsorships in townships across all eight provinces, many of which are under the support of Mosiea-Tiya, who looks after the brand in its entirety.
As we speak, Mosiea-Tiya is in KwaZulu-Natal, creating hype in Umlazi and Empangeni, areas where we have rolled out fibre internet. Many communities will be benefiting from her expertise.
In the fast-paced world of events management, where precision meets creativity, Mosiea-Tiya has carved out a reputation as a visionary leader. She has Kgotso Thulo and Zoleka Mashiane under her wings in the marketing department.
With a keen eye for detail, an unshakable passion for bringing people together in joy, and a track record of executing flawless events, Mosiea-Tiya has become a name synonymous with excellence in the events management industry. She is a specialist who needs no introduction in the many townships she visits.
Her love for events began early in her career while employed by the award-winning Emirates Airlines. With friends in the marketing space, she mirrored their work while organising events in other countries.
Nomvula Mosiea
GLOBE TROTTER TO SUCCESSFUL EVENTS MANAGER
“I started appreciating the events management field when I saw how my friends organised events like Rugby 7s in Dubai. It was fascinating, and I fell in love with it. I knew that I wasn’t going to be in the flight business for too long.”
Her next step was pushing through school functions and intimate gatherings for friends and family until she sharpened her craft.
Born and bred in Orlando East, Soweto, the UAEDubai became her second home “when it was not fashionable,” followed by the world becoming her third home.
The normally shy Nomvula (Vee) opens up when speaking about the rich township (ekasi) culture, luxurious lifestyles, and globetrotting experiences.
Nomvula says she prayed to see the world, and her wish was granted – all while knowing that South Africa has it all: weather, food, wine, diversity, strong family values, and humour, among other things.
She strategically paved her way home by aligning with Emirates Airline Marketing, networking with friends in the events industry, and enrolling for further studies in event and wedding planning in the United Kingdom.
“I knew my next career would be events when I saw Serena Williams playing tennis through the window of the aviation college during my first week of training. I couldn’t concentrate,” she quipped.
During her spare time in Dubai, she voluntarily aligned herself with event organisers in the country for practical experience.
“Net Nine Nine feels like a refresher course on everything travelling abroad has taught me – cultural competence, navigating language and cultural barriers, adaptability, resilience, problem-solving, analytical and strategic thinking, curiosity, selfawareness, and empathy,” she said.
Having had the privilege of working with different communities, she has seen and appreciated the impact of Net Nine Nine’s presence and the skills it has passed on.
Recognising her passion, she pursued a career in events planning, honing her skills in logistics, coordination, and creative design through Net Nine Nine. Over the years, Mosiea-Tiya has worked with top-tier brands, high-profile clients, and large-scale productions, developing a deep understanding of what makes an event truly unforgettable.
Her formula for success, which sets her apart in the industry, is a unique blend of creativity, strategic planning, and adaptability – something that has been well appreciated by the powers that be at Net Nine Nine.
From corporate conferences and lavish weddings to music festivals, charity galas, golf days, and soccer tournaments, Mosiea-Tiya has mastered the art of crafting seamless experiences tailored to diverse audiences. Her portfolio of work speaks for itself.
“A successful event requires meticulous attention to detail,” she said. “Every element, from budgets and venues to event bylaws, selection, décor, catering, and entertainment, is meticulously planned to align with the vision of the area where we will be hosting an event. Cultural research is key because every area has its unique way of doing things.”
Beyond logistics, it’s Mosiea-Tiya’s ability to anticipate challenges and solve problems in real time that ensures a smooth and stress-free experience for clients and guests alike.
WE UNLEASH HEROES IN BETHAL AND HENDRINA!
Net Nine Nine changes lives everywhere it goes!
Ask the people of Emzinoni, Bethal, and Hendrina in Mpumalanga, where this fibre internet provider has turned lives around and created heroes.
Over 70 jobs have been created under the leadership of Mpumalanga Regional Manager, William Ratladi, who is the principal for both stores that were officially launched in February and March, respectively.
On top of that, there are also local SMMEs benefiting from the rollout of fibre, and many others are being trained to be astute businessmen, thanks to Net Nine Nine’s drive to empower communities.
As the saying goes: “Heroes are made, not born,” which suggests that heroic qualities are developed through actions and experiences. We fully concur, as Net Nine Nine welcomes hordes of individuals whom we accept with open arms, nurturing and honing their skills to uncover the hero in them.
Our teams of experts from different departments – sales, billing, support, and marketing – are always available during store launches to educate our clients on how fibre works and to answer all questions.
From the eastern side of South Africa, the direction in which the sun first raises its nose every morning, Mpumalanga, the place of the rising sun, is blessed by Net Nine Nine with the biggest fibre internet lines and stores in Kwa-Guqa, Mhluzi, and now Emzinoni, Bethal, and Hendrina.
Net Nine Nine is currently in eight provinces across the country, barring the Western Cape, which is also being considered for the future.
The Bethal and Hendrina launches, respectively, were a bit different compared to many others, where there was a huge motorbike rolling and spinning, as well as a clap-and-tap party the day after the different stores opened their doors for business, and the community couldn’t have been happier.
FLAMBOYANT BONOKOANE DRESSED BY NET99!
Clad in a Net Nine Nine-sponsored boxing kit, orthodox fighter Thato “Captain Charisma” Bonokoane left the Galleria boxing ring in Sandton bruised but not discouraged after losing on points to Ayabonga Sonjica at the Storm Boxing Tournament on 15 March 2025.
“I am ‘Captain Charisma,’ and I maintain that I’m a good boxer,” said the 34-year-old fighter from Kagiso, Krugersdorp, who debuted in the sport in 2013.
He said he always listens to his body before every fight and still regards himself as a winner, despite being rusty against Sonjica.
Bonokoane has been a part of the Net Nine Nine family since 2022, where this great partnership has helped him immensely since he approached the fibre internet company seeking sponsorship.
“Despite the loss, I believe that I can still drop a few boxers with my powerful punches. I’m known across the world, and that gives me courage every time I jump into the ring. Losing is part of the game, and somehow we all have to improve,” he said confidently.
Bonokoane will be back in the gym soon to prepare for his next fight, though he isn’t yet clear on when and whom he will be facing.
He admitted that he was a bit slow against Sonjica: “I am always a slow starter, and I believe I could have done him some damage if the fight had carried on for a few more rounds because I ended on a high. I gave him enough chance to recover because I was
a bit hesitant in launching punches. And this is the price of being slow. But boxing is all about collecting points in different rounds.”
He maintains that he is still strong and will, in his next fight, represent Net Nine Nine with aplomb—sharp and fast to drop whomever stands in his way.
“I believe that I’m a superfast boxer and still tough as an orthodox. Some in my corner would think that I was the winner on the day. It happens a lot, like in Tanzania in October last year (where I lost to Kalolo Amiri) when points were not awarded accordingly,” he argued.
On his attire, Bonokoane said: “I looked beautiful. No boxer would look better than me in that boxing gear. I was handsome.”
Bonokoane is the eldest son of Amos and the late Matshidiso Priscilla Bonokoane.
Thato’s introduction to boxing came during his mischievous youth when he and his friends visited a local boxing gym run by experienced trainer Thabiso Koetle. This encounter sparked Thato’s interest in the sport, and he had his first taste of boxing at the age of 12.
Although his initial focus remained on football, his primary passion, he couldn’t ignore his growing fascination with boxing, where he spent three years as an amateur before transitioning to the professional ranks in 2013.
Despite it all, Bonokoane will always remain our HERO!

WE’RE DOING THIS FOR THE PEOPLE - OOSTHUYSEN!
Net Nine Nine CEO Albert Oosthuysen has detailed his journey and challenges within the telecommunications industry to leading weekend newspaper, the Sunday Times, about his background as a medical device salesman.
He then worked for a contractor in the fibre network sector, providing internet access to suburbs before co-founding Evotel and, ultimately, Net Nine Nine.
“We said we should build our own network that we can basically monetise over a long period of time. And that’s how Evotel started; it was the first one in the journey,” said Oosthuysen.
However, he explained that the launch wasn’t without its challenges. After securing bank funding, Oosthuysen tried to expand to a township in Rustenburg, which led to a fight with the local municipality.
This resulted in a court battle.
It was around this time that he brought in Nicholas Thipe, the current Chief of Staff at Net Nine Nine. Thipe helped gain insights into what communities wanted.
“Turns out all the locals wanted was for us to hire people from the community for the project,” said Oosthuysen.
Targeting the largely untapped township market, he got funders on board and launched Net Nine Nine in 2020.
He explained that the key was building trust with communities.
“They needed to know that we would keep our promises, and we do,” he said.
Oosthuysen said another major challenge was that many township customers could not make electronic payments and wanted to pay cash for Net Nine Nine’s services.
It opened brick-and-mortar stores to enable customers to pay cash for its services.
Since then, the company has grown to employ 200 permanent staff and 300 contractors. It has networks in 15 townships, providing connectivity to more than 214,000 households in eight provinces.
Infinite Partners’ Core Equity Fund and coinvestment firms acquired a strategic interest in Net Nine Nine and Oosthuysen’s initial fibre venture, Evotel, in early 2025.
Evotel is a fibre network operator with coverage in towns and cities in the central and northern parts of the country, including Welkom, Krugersdorp, and Rustenburg.
It operates on an open-access basis, enabling customers to purchase its uncapped fibre-to-thehome packages from a choice of ISPs.
The Competition Commission approved the deal for Infinite Partners to acquire Evotel, Net Nine Nine, Link Layer, and Magnolia Tree without conditions in November 2024.
“The Commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market,” it said.
“The proposed transaction does not raise significant public interest concerns.”
Infinite Partners explained that it has consolidated Net Nine Nine, Evotel, and Link Layer into a single holding company: Fibre Holdco.
Fibre Holdco is dedicated to expanding affordable fibre connectivity to historically underserved communities, including townships and rural mining towns across the country.
