Let go, trust and evolve naturally

Words DR CARLOS SANCHEZ, MD

It is interesting how things seem to flow in life. Without really planning, just following the path of the uncertainty and listening to your gut feeling, the history of your life gets written. I find that the most important events that happened have been ‘as a matter of fact’ – the ones that haven’t been thought through at length and in the end, everything seems to work out with a better outcome. Are these the lessons we are meant to learn in life?

If you had asked me 25 years ago where I was going to be, my answer would have been most likely in the UK, following the rat race, being a surgeon in some tertiary hospital somewhere in the countryside. I remember a comment a consultant made when working as a resident in Ear, Nose and Throat after I said I was going to Australia to do one year of emergency medicine to gain experience in acute medicine – something always good to have as a surgeon in case one of your patients ‘goes off’. He replied, “you will never come back, you will stay in Australia”. It would have been funny to have taken a picture of the expression of my face, the incredulity of a young 26-year-old who had planned the rest of his life. As it turned out, I ended up doing not one year but six in emergency medicine, followed by general practice, culminating with my fellowship then practice in integrative medicine.

I think the beauty of life is to let go, evolving as we learn new things, not clinging to certain beliefs, and enjoying the adventure of the trip that it takes us on. Be flexible to unanticipated changes and listen to your instinct. I can assure you it will be right. Evolve as the journey transgresses your own mind’s limits. Breathe deeply and relax as you are thrown into the unknown. At the end of the day, that is what life is about, an incredible odyssey of experiences. Live in the present moment!
