The inspiration for the Super Elder topic was Neshi’s mother who was turning 101 at the time. Super Elders are those who continue to feel useful and contribute to their community. The topic is near and dear to Neshi’s heart and a was challenge to write (both physically and mentally). Currently, Neshi is coordinating her mother’s hospice care.

Gratitude & Thankfulness

I love Autumn. I love the trees’ leaves changing color and then dropping to the ground. I even love the rain during this time as it helps nature to prepare for winter. I am grateful for this time of year because we begin preparations to be indoors during the colder weather to come.

My mind turns to thankfulness not because of Thanksgiving but rather because of the last few items harvested from the garden and how we begin to prepare meals that are more comforting — such as stews, soups, and ovenbaked foods.

My family has gathered at this time of year for the gun deer hunting season, and Thanksgiving just happens to occur during the same time. We did have the turkey meal with all the trimmings. We even watched the Macy’s parade as well as the football games. I never really felt true thankfulness built around this one day a year.

I do, however, believe in being grateful and being thankful. My spiritual practice places gratitude and thankfulness very high

every day, not just one day a year. My practice is not based on the commercialized platitude of Thanksgiving Day. I also avoid Black Friday shopping.

Have you noticed how you feel when you are heartfelt thankful and heartfelt grateful? A sense of happiness, peacefulness, light-heartedness, and even joy is felt deep inside.

I consciously choose to be grateful and thankful so that I can feel happy. Sometimes, I have to give myself an attitude adjustment to have heartfelt gratitude and

I have written many blog articles and magazine articles about Thanksgiving and this U.S. holiday from a Native American perspective. I haven’t celebrated Thanksgiving in the traditional sense in many decades. However, I have prepared more traditional

foods around this time of year because I enjoy them.

thankfulness. Sometimes it can take a day or more to really feel the gratitude and thankfulness from my heart. The point is that I get there and I feel the higher vibrations of happiness.

I also believe we are powerful co-creators. As co-creators, we can choose to create from a heart that is filled with gratitude and thankfulness. The trick is making that choice.

In today’s world, some would question how you can sense thankfulness and what is there to be grateful for when the world seems to be filled with panic, chaos, and hate. I believe we choose how we want to feel, even though we may face dire circumstances.

Here is what I am truly grateful and thankful for, given I am experiencing fatigue from being my mother’s primary caregiver for nine years, and now she is in the in-home hospice program. We are always aware of her health declining and moving toward her passing, Walking On.

I am thankful and grateful for:

My husband, Paul, who has taken on the meal preparations and cleanup; The newly formed caregiver team for my mom; The hospice nurse assigned to my mom; My Star Nations Executive Team as they take on more and more of my work so that I can be present for my mom; Our power partners at Elf Elm Publishing who are our magazine layout specialists and have taken on almost all of the creation process for the magazine so that I can be present for my mom; Star Nations community who have us in their prayers and are sending us love as we travel this part of my mom’s journey; My SiStars who love and support me every step of the way. They are my sounding board, which encourages me to do my self-care.

THE CELEBRATION OF CYCLES The Day of the Dead, also known as Día De Los Muertos, has always been one of the most important tradition celebrations and is celebrated from October 31st–November 2nd. The Day of the Dead is ancestral and earth aligned when the veil is thinnest. It is a time to remember and connect to our deceased ancestors, guides, and loved ones. It is a time of communication and clarity. We speak to them and feel their lively energy wherever they are on the astral plane.

This is not only a day of honoring the deceased, but it is also a moment of honoring life, for time does not exist in this moment. We honor the past, the present, and the future in a full circle rotating through to the core of the Earth.

We honor and celebrate the lives and memories of those who are not with us physically, allowing the magic of the thin veil to carry their messages to us. It is a celebration of both life and death.

There are so many rituals that can be done during this time. Many people select to make offerings in their home or at cemeteries to honor the dead. Many bring offerings such as food, drinks, or personal items for an opportunity to seek guidance. Some make

Day of the Dead sugar skulls and mark on it the name of the one being celebrated.

The traditional flower associated with this day is the Marigold.

With its sweet aroma, it engulfs the senses and opens the soul to the day of connection. Marigold allows the thinking mind to release and welcoming the experience.

With so much death, celebration, and life cycles, one of my favorite Day of the Dead rituals is a bath ritual. Bath rituals have been used

for cleansing and recharging the body and aura for centuries. It is how I typically prepare myself for witchcraft and magic work.

In a ritual bath all five elements are represented. The four elements typically discussed are earth, air, water, and fire. The fifth element discussed here is yourself. It is necessary to understand the magic that you hold and

Day of the Dead Bath Ritual ¼ cup Calendula (Marigold) ¼ cup Passionflower 1 cup Epsom Salt 2-3 handfuls of unrefined sea salt or Himalayan crystal salt Favorite Incense Candle(s) Mix the above ingredients thoroughly. I do recommend putting the mixture into a large muslin bag to make the clean-up easier. Try to make sure that you will not be disturbed for at least an hour. Now cleanse your bathtub and try to avoid any cleansers with harm chemicals. Take a shower and thoroughly cleanse your body.

Begin to run your bathwater at your desired temperature and add the magical mixture to the bath so it can melt and steep. As the tub is filling carefully begin to burn your candle(s) and incense. The bath will be the element of water, the incense smoke represents air, the candle flame is fire, and the herbs you will cleanse in are of the Earth.

Then your intentions and personal magic will be the fifth element. Once the bath is ready submerse yourself into the magical body of water.

It is recommended that you air dry when you get out of the tub and if possible do not shower or bathe for 24 hours after the ritual. Carefully extinguish your candles and discard the muslin bag or herbs. You can take some time to journal your experience and record anything that came up during this time. Now allow the rest of your experience to unfold.

At this time begin to set your intentions. Ask for the cleansing and releasing to take place and for your ancestors to come forth with any information that they wish to give you. Honor them. Think of the memories that you have and allow them to play in your mind’s eye. Speak with them.

This is a personal time so simply follow your heart and be free to express and let go of what you need to release.

There is no wrong way or one way to do this. It is your time. You can speak out loud or silently. This includes you!

the power of your intention. The energy that you hold is so powerful and is one of the main reasons why I always encourage individuals to do their own “spellwork”.

In the Day of the Dead bath ritual, I also enhance the incantational brew with herbs that honor the ancestors and holiday. Herbs can infuse the magic of the celebration to your inner magic.

As we discussed previously, Marigold is an herb of the sun that I personally use on a regular basis and has very strong ties to the Day of the Dead. Being that Marigold is an herb of the sun it offers a fiery energy like the fire necromancy used on this holiday.

This herb magic is warming and gently nurtures us into a livelier temperament as we enter the dark of winter. Not only is this herb used to release any negative energy, but it can also be used in commemoration magic for the deceased, as an offering to your

ancestors who are no longer on this plane.

Passionflower is associated with the element of water and works to gently flow through the body for releasing. It also aids in elevating into higher consciousness which allow stagnant energies to be released harmoniously. The channel is then opening to let go of any fear or block that you are ready to release. Because of this, it assists with the release of the ego while providing more clarity and allows you to delve deeper into your own gifts that you brought with you into this lifetime.

The thinking mind is lessened while your mind’s eye provides you with visions of truth. It is an excellent herb to use when communicating and connecting with those who are no longer walking this Earth.  Enjoy the magic of you!

Kindness for All Veterans

In 1975 I returned to the United States after serving in S.E. Asia and the Philippines. I, like everyone else who served there, did not want it to be known that I was in the military and had been stationed “over there”. People in the military were shunned, cast aside, and considered an embarrassment during the time of the Viet Nam War.

There was a lot of anger in this country about the Viet Nam War. This anger was directed at those who were drafted by our government and were following the orders of their commanders and Commander in Chief – the President.

Our wounded veterans returning from the Viet Nam War were not cared for and many of them became homeless and lived on the streets. They suffered from PTSD, though no one wanted to hear about that. They also had severe injuries and loss of limbs similar to our current day soldiers.

we have an “all-volunteer force”.

Over the years things have changed and the attitude towards the military has shifted. I feel that 911 is what brought about that change. I am grateful to see that our veterans are final receiving the medical care and treatments that they have certainly earned. It is about time, as many of us older vets did not get that medical treatment and kindness.

Kindness is free, it doesn’t cost anyone anything. It only needs to be thought of and given to others, especially our veterans. Our veterans, who have seen more than anyone should have to see

I don’t know of anyone who “wanted” to go over there. These young men had no choice, no say, and yet they are the ones who paid dearly for their service. To return home to the anger and nasty attitudes directed at them is and was unfair, a travesty.

My son recently asked me if I felt sorry for President Nixon. I quickly and reflexively said, “No!” Besides all the other illegal actions he took, he was responsible for the incredible loss of life that took place in Viet Nam and the other neighboring countries.

I feel now however, that Nixon was a lesson for us all. I still struggle with that though.

I joined the military after seeing that the demonstrations against the war were not making any difference.

As a medic, I felt I might be able to help my friends from high school who were drafted and sent over there. I was able to do that while working on the Orthopedics Ward at Clark AB, Philippines and later while working on Aeromedical Evacuations.

The nightmares the patients had each night were scary as were the stories they shared. Being an empath, which I didn’t know at the time, left me very vulnerable to their pain. I found myself sharing in their nightmares even though I did not live them in person.

These veterans served their country at a great price to themselves and their identity. It haunts them daily and makes living very difficult for them. Yes, they followed orders and did what they were told to do, but much of it was against their moral beliefs.

PANCIT BIHON Ingredients 1 (12 ounce) package dried rice noodles 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 onion, finely diced (I like to use sweet onions) 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups diced or shredded, cooked, chicken breast meat 1 small head cabbage, thinly sliced (I use Chinese cabbage) 4 carrots, thinly sliced or julienned 1 cup snow peas or bean sprouts (I like the green color of the snow peas) ¼ cup soy sauce 2 cups chicken broth (or beef for other meats) 2 lemons or limes, without seeds – cut into wedges, for garnish (optional) Directions Whisk all the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl and set aside.

Place a medium size pan on a burner over medium heat. Add a little oil and pan fry the chicken until the pieces are cooked through.

Transfer them to a plate and set aside.

Use the same pan to add the garlic and onion.

Cook for 3–4 minutes until fragrant and the onions have become translucent.

After seeing firsthand how broken our servicemen were, I hope you can understand why the way they have been treated is so hard for me. We all deserve to be treated fairly, humanely, and with kindness. So, this Veteran’s Day I am asking you to be a bit more thoughtful and introspective, and to offer some kindness to our veterans. It will be received with gratitude and will make you feel good too! Thank you!

Return the chicken pieces to the pan and season with a little salt and pepper.

Add the vegetables and stir fry until the vegetables are soft but still yielding a little crunch.

Whisk together the soy sauce and chicken broth, add it to the pan, and bring it to a boil.

Add the dry Pancit noodles to the pan and let the heat from the sauce cook them. Gently toss the noodles to make sure they are evenly coated. The noodles will get infused with tons of flavor this way as opposed to just being coated with sauce. They should be cooked in 3–4 minutes. If the noodles are still crunchy once the sauce has been absorbed, add a little stock (¼ cup) to help them cook through.

Turn the heat off and transfer the dish to a serving bowl or plate. Season with salt and pepper and serve with soy sauce and lemon wedges.

A nice side dish is Lumpia, the small spring rolls that are made with a very thin rice paper and then deep fried. This recipe could serve up to 4 people depending on the serving size. I hope you enjoy this recipe; I am happy to have found it in my recipe box!

This month, as I think about being overseas, I’d like to share with you a recipe from the Philippines. Pancit Bihon, is staple in their diet – much like spaghetti and meatballs is to us. It can be made with chicken, shrimp, or pork. It’s a quick one pan meal and takes about 20 minutes to make. Enjoy!

Kindness Matters

“I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” – Rachel Scott

I am being shown Rachel glowing in light, dispatched from the heavens to places on earth where there is darkness. During her life, Rachel

sought to bridge understanding and connection. She knew, as do many, that students who were new to school and had special needs often felt isolated and were more likely to be targets of bullying. Unlike many her age, she challenged those who were the aggressors and comforted those who were victims. She did so with deep conviction and faith in the importance of kindness.

In addition to being empathic, Rachel was highly intuitive. She would speak with matter of fact certainty that she would die young and once shared with one of her teachers a prophetic image which depicted her passing, which was to occur days later.

lunch at Columbine High School.

Two of her peers approached her, dressed in trench coats and brandishing weapons. They asked her, mockingly, if she still had faith.

Her response was, “You know I do.” Their response was to end her life. Her brother Craig heard the gunshots from the library of the school, where he was studying with his friends. Minutes later, his friends would be killed as well.

Due to the shooter’s gun jamming, Craig’s life was spared.

He and his family members inspired to make meaning of Rachel’s passing and created Rachel’s Challenge. The program’s purpose is to educate people on the effects of disconnection and to inspire acts of kindness. To this day, the program has impacted hundreds of thousands of lives.

People need to understand the importance of kindness not only as a practice, but as a way to claim and identify with their divinity. Rachel Scott was a beautiful young girl who embodied this truth. Tell them her story. Tell them of how she sacrificed herself at the hands of disgruntled and pain-filled young men to speak on behalf of love and tolerance.

Her life was not in vain. She is not accessible to you right now, but she is present; she is present in the acts of kindness which reverberate through the world, inspired by those who knew of her and the power of chain reactions of kindness.

Columbine impacted me deeply, as has Rachel’s Challenge. The week Rachel died I learned I was pregnant with my first child. I recall being glued to news outlets trying to comprehend how such a tragedy could occur. I was also acutely aware this was the world into which I would be bringing my daughter. Years later, when I worked for my local school district, I brought the Rachel’s Challenge program to both the high school and elementary school. Witnessing the impact of the program on the students and faculty left a deep imprint of fulfillment and gratitude on my heart. Rachel was a beautiful soul who truly grasped the importance of embodying kindness. I am so grateful to her for what she has taught me and to her family for continuing her legacy through such an impactful program.

When delivering the curriculum to high school and elementary students, I learned a great deal about what kindness means to children. Since then, I have sought to embody their wisdom in my everyday life. At its core, kindness is having a generosity of spirit. At times that is revealed by conducting a small act of service like smiling, noticing what someone is struggling with and easing their burden, offering a compliment, or sending a text that simply says: “Thinking of you.” Other times it is willing to simply be present without judgment, to hold space for someone with full attention,

to walk away from gossip, or to stand back and let someone make their own choices without commentary.

I have a print in my home which reads “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted”, credited to Aesop. I find on the days I need that reminder my eyes are drawn to it. Reading the words always fills me with a rush of hope and purpose, knowing that everything I do matters. Everything done with love contributes to the healing of our world. It is both a powerful and humbling feeling; realizing we have opportunities every moment of every day to choose to do what is kind. Our choices will directly impact not only the person with whom we are

—What’s So Special?

In order to understand 11:11, we need to start with understanding the energetic progression of numbers. The numerical systems have progressed from the use of tally marks, more than 40,000 years ago, through to the use of sets of glyphs to efficiently represent any conceivable number. The Egyptians invented the first ciphered numerical system that dates back to 3100BC and like our modern numbering system, it uses a base of 10.

Pythagoras popularized the idea that “all numbers have different vibrational properties”. His ideas have lead modern science and mathematics to show how the world conforms precisely to geometric mathematical principles governing everything from gravity to the migratory movements of animals and the habits of humanity.

Pythagoras was also the founder of Divination Numerology in the

6th Century BC. Each letter of the alphabet was given a sequential number from 1 to 9. Each number has a different meaning. The numbers could be used individually to show traits; but, in order to find out the person’s life path, challenges and more, the numbers of the letters of the name needed to be added together. The numbers in the birth date would show which vibrational influences were at play throughout the person’s life. Specific numbers – 11, 22 and 33 – also called the Master Numbers, were the only other numbers used. Since its inception, Numerology has been used to gain deeper understanding of

ourselves, the universe, and our place in the universe.

St. Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354 –430) wrote “Numbers are theUniversal Language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth.”

The arcane teachings of ancient Egypt were clocked in mystery.

In the ancient Egyptian Mystery Schools the adepts were taught deeper concepts through symbols. For instance, they saw the Nile River as symbolic of the backbone of the human body.

Times are changing. Our 3rd Dimensional Earth is moving into a 5th Dimensional level of awareness, of consciousness. Deep Spiritual Truths known only by a few during ancient times are being introduced to many in the Modern World. Individuals are opening themselves up to receiving higher wisdom and consciousness. The Master numbers such as 11, 22 and 33 are coming to the forefront.

More and more individuals are associating with 11:11. These numbers induce from within significant messages, insight, higher ideals, illumination, inner teachings, spiritual awakening, Angels, Portals and Higher Ascension.

Communicating with Sacred Animals

Am I a Monster?

As an Animal Communicator, I feel that I have been given a gift of being able to communicate with Animals. I firmly believe that my destiny is to help Animals, to be able to understand what they need, to communicate their thoughts and wishes, and to help them live better lives. I believe I am the “voice for the voiceless”.

I am not perfect about it, but I do my best. I am a vegetarian and I work with Animals every day. Even though my schedule is incredibly hectic, I still volunteer with several Animal type organizations. I give a great deal of my time to the Detroit Zoo, a Grizzly Bear rescue sanctuary in Montana, and with many other Animal rescue groups. That seems pretty kind, right? It should look like I care about Animals from any angle that you look at it, wouldn’t it? Well, apparently not. I recently took a huge blow to my self-­ esteem, a virtual sucker-punch to the gut, if you will.

Even though I feel that I am kind, believe me when I tell you that I am no saint. To be perfectly honest, I can tend to be a bit self-centered at times. But not so when it comes to Animals, as they are my soft spot. Whether it is right or wrong, I often have far more compassion for Animals than I do for people. All of the kindness that I have in me goes to the Animals. Luckily, there are other people in the world who watch out for humans while I am watching out for Animals.

charters in the Caribbean. The Captain asked me if I would be willing to come on a week-long charter and teach the passengers about Animal Communication on the boat. This Captain envisioned me teaching the passengers all about the sea creatures while tooling around an island and there is even an area where you can swim with the Green Sea Turtles! The Captain felt that the more that people knew about these Animals, the more that they will care and protect these beautiful creatures. It seemed like a win-win for everyone, including the Animals.

So, like any businesswoman, I went to social media to promote my trip and try to attract passengers/students. Since this is a sea-faring trip, I decided to use a photo of me with one of my Dolphin clients. It made sense to me and I was sure that everyone would appreciate the photo. I was wrong. DEAD WRONG. I have never gotten so many negative comments in my life! Awful stuff!! I was criticized, sworn at and called horrible names. My character was called into question and I was accused of not caring about Animals. I was dumbfounded. How could anyone ever think that I (of all people) do not care about Animals? Haven’t you ever noticed that I always capitalize the word “Animals”? I also purposely capitalize every Animal

species (Dolphin, Dog, Cat, Horse, etc.). This is my way of showing my respect for them.

I was told that I was horrible to support the Detroit Zoo, because they feel zoos are “monsters” for making Animals live in captivity.

I am horrible for supporting a Grizzly Bear Rescue Sanctuary for the same reason AND I am “acutely stupid” for touching the Dolphin that I am with in that picture. I was stunned and I waited for my loyal social media followers to come to my rescue and defend me. To my dismay, it didn’t happen. I decided I needed to sit with this energy for a while, so I took a long soak in the tub and thought about my actions.

As far as the Detroit Zoo is concerned, some of the Animals at the zoo would be extinct if not for the work to preserve the species. The Detroit Zoo, in particular, is one of the few zoos that actually will rescue Animals from bad captive situations. The same is true for the Grizzly Bear Rescue Sanctuary that I work with. All of the Bears there have been rescued from horrible, captive situations and are now living a “Gourmet Bear’s life”. One of the Bears there was rescued from the wild because she was orphaned at an age too young to survive on her own. She was HOURS away from dying as she was stuck up in a tree for 4 days with no food or water and was severely underweight. I can

defend all of these people and the Animals that are in their care.

But I had to take a hard look at myself about the Dolphin. The reason I was there that day is because I was asked by the Dolphin’s caregiver to talk to the Dolphins to make sure that they were happy and getting good care from the trainer and other caregivers. I did not force this Dolphin to come to me, it came freely. I did not force the Dolphin to let me touch it, it approached ME and we were interacting. I don’t need to be anywhere near the Dolphin to communicate with it, I can do that from the other side of the world. So, I guess I wonder … just because I could, should I? Were the “haters” right?

Should I have never had touched that Dolphin?

I believe that I was acting in the best interest of the Dolphin. I was trying to make sure it was well cared for. To be honest, we had a great interaction and had fun together that day. I got information that the Dolphin was very well cared for and enjoyed the interaction. When I bid the dolphins good-bye, they were singing to me. But does that make it all ok?

Can you have kind intentions and still be a monster? My last thought is that “Kindness Matters”.

Native American Hair & the Sacred Gift of Energy

The title for this month’s article is one I found myself pondering over due to a variety of reasons.

First, there is a plethora of information available to folks on the internet today with regard to the culture known as “Native American” culture. In fact, within that particular header, you’ll find several very interesting sub-­categories, which I hope we can explore together, a bit, today. Let’s focus on one in particular—hair.

Some of the most oft-asked questions I receive are: “Why do Native people wear their hair long?”

“Why do they braid their hair?”

“What is the purpose of different hairstyles in Native culture?”

“Why don’t you update your hairstyle?”

“Can you be Native without long hair?”

Hair seems a semi-complex subject to explore, so let’s start with a little current history of Native Americans. If you’ve read the previous articles I have written, you will read/receive cultural information with an eye to both the general as well specific. For instance, there are approximately 567 Federally recognized tribes on Turtle Island (the original and still currently used words for the United States).

With that many tribes or Nations (dependent upon how each one identifies)(these are simply the number of recognized tribes— many still are unrecognized), there are bound to be variations in thought. By the way, I find I am a firm thinker in that there are no stupid inquiries, so please come along with that assurance. Part of my position is that since most folks don’t intersect within the Native community often enough to gather accurate information, one cannot expect a person to suddenly gain information out of thin air or Indianpedia (a little joking riff)…. so let’s put forward some useful facts.

Starting at birth, the discussion of hair begins whether the child is male, female, or other (they/ them/their), hair is a component of that child’s spiritual teachings from the get.

Why is this? Starting at a birth point, the first teaching that hair is considered an extension of the power of the Mother Earth, herself, is commonly revisited among the relatives gathered to discuss the various parts of the birth story. In fact, hair is so highly valued that you rarely will find a Native child

at the ceremony who does not have some braid affixed, even if it is an inch in length.

The straight purpose of this endeavor is to recognize the child in the eyes of the Grandmother Earth. It is also a point of cultural pride that will show itself with some type of adornment (i.e., a bead or two, a shell, etc.)

What do I mean by “recognition” in the eyes of Grandmother Earth? A very simple answer to that is posed within this question. Have you ever seen a round or braid of Sweetgrass?

Sweetgrass is one of the original medicines given to the Original People of this land and may be considered part of the sacred “four” medicines.

Sweetgrass grows in several places and traditionally is considered to be the actual hair of the Grandmother Earth. Not representationally, nor anecdotally, but with a clear teaching, it is the precious energy connection to the Universe and all sacred beings. So, a child’s hair is a jump-off discussion point.

It may seem a little unusual to think that hair is far more than ornamentation in a culture; however, in the Indigenous Native community, hair holds so much value that to be without it is considered to be deeply vulnerable to outside influences, both in and outside of the spirit world. Let’s explore that one very important point.

You will sometimes see a Native American man or a woman who has made a ‘sacrifice’ of their braid or braids for a few reasons.

In particular, I would like to bring you along in that journey, so you are fully aware of what appropriate questions to pose if you come upon a friend whose glorious mane has been shorn and they are pensive or slightly embarrassed. It is considered to be a very private event.

When a loved one dies, often Native people are called on to make a sacrifice of their hair to show respect, mourning, deep concern for that soul’s journey to the spirit world, and an outward message of the vulnerability that life holds in a Native person’s world.

In times of loss, I have been called to sacrifice my hair’s length for some of the above reasons, and I will say it can really test your mettle. So much of one’s esteem is tied to cultural appearance, so being without your hair places you in a very interesting position.

Further, you will notice that Native people generally do not participate in the ‘giving’ away from our hair.

Does that seem selfish to you at this moment? That Native people don’t ‘donate’ their hair to those less in need due to whatever reasons? Let me speak to that a little bit, so you have a clearer idea of why you won’t see that action occur.

Hair holds a specific type of energy or frequency. In fact, hair is likened to a conductive element in the unseen worlds. Our hair

connects us to our ancestors (Native spiritual guides and/or family members), and much spiritual energy flows through that.

For those reasons, removing one’s hair to gift to someone else can place each party in a very awkward as well potentially confusing place.

The transfer of energy from hair (which, contrary to science) Indigie people believe is alive from the moment it shows itself on the scalp, can place a person into a place that is not good for their mental, physical well spiritual health, if it is not connected to the person/lineage it originates from.

Hair has memory. Hair conducts energy. Hair can be a tool through which one’s ancestors communicate with someone.

For those reasons, we refrain from placing anyone in a place of potential danger with hair donation.

Another discussion that takes place in the community’s privacy can be the ongoing wound of ‘scalping.’

That action, if you place it in the context of some of the information above, had a distinct purpose in addition to the dismemberment of a person. It was the seeking of the power of a person as well to show victory over or dominance in some way.

So, if you see an older Native man with a thin ponytail or braid, or a woman with a semi-severe bob or shingle cut or a man with a shaved head with a single small braid, you have a little bit of context with which to place some of the hair events in the Native community. Again, the variety of tribes/Nations each have some particular cultural attachment/rules, which may intersect with another tribe/Nation.

What is the meaning of beauty? Definitions say it is a quality that brings pleasure to the senses or to the mind by behavior or attitude. Science informs us that it has to do with the physical appearance of health and fertility. We are attracted to beauty because it indicates strong reproductive capabilities, linked to survival of the fittest.

Our minds are also attracted to symmetrical balanced images, and the average face is symmetrical.

From Science News, “Research shows that people with more symmetrical faces don’t just look nice, they also tend to be healthier than asymmetrical people.

Genes provide the instructions for how a cell is to perform. All people have the same number of genes.

But people with more average faces tend to have a greater diversity in the genes they are born with. And that, research has shown, can lead to a stronger immune system and better health.”

Culture also plays a role in what we view as physically beautiful. We have all heard the saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

This brings to mind that our version of beauty is an individual judgment. Any characteristic can be applied to a physical object and said to be pleasing to the senses or hideous. Women of the Padaung tribe in Thailand wear coiled brass rings around their necks from a very young age. These collars give the illusion of an elongated neck and this is seen as a symbol of beauty in their tribe that they wear proudly.

In the Chinese culture, the practice of binding young girls feet to keep them small, was once considered a symbol of beauty. It was also a means of displaying the status of wealthy families. Those who did not need their feet to work, could afford to have them bound.

Nose and ear plugs, piercings, tattoos, freckles, and body size all showcase cultural views of physical beauty. When author Clarrisa Pinkola Estes visited her birth family in Mexico for the first time, she was viewed by family and friends there as being too skinny.

They desired to “fatten her up”, to give her the vision of health and beauty their culture esteemed.

There are also other layers of our senses that perceive beauty in our world. A rose may be labeled as beautiful visually, but also our sense of smell can take that feeling even deeper.

Sunsets, ocean waves, peaceful forests, and the vastness of space can touch our hearts with beauty by their very existence. Nature provides us many opportunities to experience awe and wonder in our lives.

Our sense of hearing is another way to experience beauty.

Sounds that are pleasing to the ear such as music, poetry, and laughter can fill our hearts with emotions that their beauty provokes. Exquisitely prepared foods provide us with beautiful pleasures for our taste buds.

Another layer of beauty goes beyond the physical characteristics of the human body, and that is

beauty of the Spirit. This is the light that shines forth from people that is sometimes called charisma. It is the true essence of who we are inside, our individuality. This true beauty illuminates our beings with the confidence and acceptance of truly loving our own uniqueness. When we are near this kind of beauty, we cannot help but feel enlightened as well. Our true beauty shining out enables others to feel more alive and powerful and real. This is what “Walking in Beauty” really means.

The Super Elder “Consider the advice of your Elders — Not because they are always right, but because of the wisdom they have gleaned from being wrong.” Anonymous Dear readers, this month’s article is near and dear to my heart and a challenge to write. The Super Elder topic for this month’s article also falls within Native American Heritage Month. I am finding this article creation a challenge because originally, the topic of Super Elders came about for my mother, who was turning 101 at the time of the topic’s creation.

Currently, my mother is in hospice. So, writing about her and

“Eldership of a Super Elder” hits close to my heart.

In August 2020, on my weekly live stream show, Communications from Home, I continued the series about Eldership with the Super Elder topic. I knew I would be writing about this topic for the magazine at some point.

What is a Super Elder? We can describe this person from a few perspectives.

The biomedical business defines Super-Seniors as individuals aged 85 years and older who reported never being diagnosed with cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, dementia, or major pulmonary disease.

Most Native American Nations define their elders as anyone over 55, with super elders being over 90.

Super Elders could also be defined as any Elder who continues to feel useful and contributes to their community. In other words, these Elders are thriving rather than just surviving.

The Sacred Hoop

As I witness my mother’s end of life, I can see that she is tenacious as she holds on to her life even in the smallest of ways. Two of her granddaughters are members of her care team. She continues to share her knowledge and wisdom with them as they have

the opportunity to spend quiet time with her.

As we age and as we step into our Eldership, we have a choice to make. A choice as to what kind of Elder we want to be as we experience perhaps the most important days of life.
