Celebrating with the Moon By Yvette Neshi Lokotz
Have you ever wondered why there are so many opportunities to celebrate a New Year? I have.
Many people have written and shared about the New Year 2020 from a secular point of view. However, we are now in the energy field of the Lunar New Year. We have been in this energy field since Samhain (the end of October) and the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere. (See Star Nations Magazine Issues 77–80) The Chinese New Year is the most well-known and celebrated Lunar New Year. The Chinese were the first to write and share about the celebration from secular and religious experiences (from the solar and lunar calendars). As this well-known celebration has evolved into a more secular celebration, we
now equate the color red with the Lunar New Year as this color signifies happiness, abundance, and good luck.
everyday life? Good question. The short answer is to connect more fully with the divine feminine energies.
Let’s look a bit deeper at the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year is held on a different day each year. Our western calendar year corresponds to the Earth’s cycle around the sun; the lunar year is based phases of the Moon, hence (you all know how much I like the word hence), naming this celebration a “Lunar New Year Celebration”.
Consider that many indigenous peoples across Grandmother Earth used the movement of the Moon to measure events in their lives. At one time, we were all more connected with the cycles of the Moon. Perhaps deep within our psyche, at our soul level, we remember this connection to the Moon.
The celebration of Lunar New Year begins with the first New Moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full Moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. So, this year’s Lunar New Year 2020 begins on January 24 and continues through February 9 (Central Time Zone). Why should we be concerned with understanding the Lunar New Year and its meaning in our

The Moon has been used to symbolize the female aspects or archetypes throughout human history. From the Greek to the Native American, the Moon has always been referred to as female. Just as the Earth is the divine feminine, so is the Moon. Reflecting on the many different times of the year that we can celebrate in the energies of a New Year, let’s take in the energy of the Winter Solstice, also known

I wonder what attracts us to the celebration of a New Year. I think it is the feeling of hope and optimism. We enjoy the idea of creating something new or having the opportunity to have a better life.

as Yule. The Winter Solstice acknowledges the shortest day and the longest night under the Moon. We reflect on the past year and which items we want to release and the energies that we want to bring into our lives for the new year. A Pagan New Year can be experienced much like the Lunar New Year. There is another festival, a way of celebrating on a certain full moon that I would like to experience. This celebration is called the Lantern Festival, Yee Peng, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I am sure you have seen pictures of this famous festival.

Yee Peng is celebrated on the full Moon of the 12th lunar month, which is November. This festival or time of celebration is used to release events that happened in the past year that you wish to let go of and to make wishes for the coming Lunar New Year. In a recent Facebook live stream show, Communications from Home – Celebrating with the Moon, we had a spiritual conversation about why we would want to acknowledge our connection with the female aspect of the Moon and how we can tap into that energy for our celebrations. Our topics in this issue of Star Nations Magazine are Valentine’s Day, Clutter Clearing, Humbleness, Card Readings, and Lunar New Year. The cover is our nod to celebrating the Moon and the Lunar New Year. I realize and understand how a lunar calendar measurement is a challenging concept for most westerners to wrap our minds around. This deeper understanding is in our blood and our bones, but our mental knowledge sits in the solar or sun calendar. Maybe this is another way for us as humans to learn about
