Why Handwriting is More Creative & Productive By Yvette Neshi Lokotz Have you noticed that you rarely use pen and paper anymore? We use some devices, whether it’s our laptops, phones, or tablets, most often.

Did you know that your pen and paper connect you to your creativity? I believe we can remember we have a connection, an awareness, to our creativity. Our creativity is connected to our handwriting as our words flow through the pen and onto the paper. I recently read a couple of articles that prompted one of my live-stream shows. The articles popped into my email inbox, which I took as a “synchronicity”. The two articles are, “Do Better Work Using Pen and Paper” by Stephen Moore, and “Five Times Better When Using Paper and Pen is Better Than Using an App” by Stephanie Rosa. The important question is, why handwriting makes you more creative and productive?

I pondered the connection between our creativity and using a pen. My thoughts went to teaching space clearing classes. I taught my students no matter what space clearing tool they use, such as a feather or a drum, the medicine of that tool follows a path of energy that is set with your intention. In doing a space clearing, you consciously bring in Creator energy. Creator energy flows down through your crown chakra, down your arm, through your hand, and through whatever tool you’re using. The intentional energy then comes out through the tool. So, as the creator energy comes through you, it blends with the medicine or the spirit of you. The Creator energy picks up your energy as it travels through your body down into whatever tool you are using. The spirit or medicine of the tool adds to the intentional energy flow. There is a layering effect of energy and of spirit as you’re doing the space clearing.

When we write in longhand, we “spark” our creativity because of the path of intentional energy. Most of us sit down and get quiet to think about what we are going to write. We set the intention of what we’re going to write. Many of us call in our spiritual team to assist us in what we are writing. The Creator energy runs down through us, just like in a space clearing, and out the pen onto the paper. If you’re stuck in a project, you may want to consider using a pen and pencil. If there is a roadblock to your creativity, you can be conscious about adding Creator energy and an intentional flow of energy to remove the block. Honestly, I use pen and paper whenever I start a new project. I use a big sheet of paper with colored pencils or markers and draw circles, pictures, and a diagram. Some people may call it mind mapping, but there is much more to it than random shapes and images.

When you want or need to use a pen, do you have to search for one? Finding a pen at my house is like looking for gold. I know we have one around there somewhere.

From The Editor

This quote is insightful because we can track both our thought and our emotional process using longhand writing.

I start with a short meditation; I also call on spirit to work with me so that I can receive clarity. I begin diagramming or drawing pictures, symbols, doodling, writing words, and pretty soon there’s a plan coming together. I can see how some items interconnect. Or, I see how I can bring some items together to connect them. That’s exactly how I started Star Nations. I had an idea, a thought; I knew what we’re going to call it, but I had questions. What was it going to look like? What was it going to do? How is the energy going to flow through it? I used pens, markers, and paper to diagram the path of energy I wanted to create. You can always get out a pen and paper to intentionally create your way through any idea or thought. Stephen Moore says, “It has given me an uncluttered way to connect with my thoughts on an emotional level, it also allowed me to study my own thought process.”

If it’s not a specific kind of card that’s going out in the mail (postal mail) that I’ve handwritten, I don’t care if I cross things out. I don’t care if I misspell something. I may have arrows, and things circled or highlighted items. My notes are a mess, but when I look at them, it makes perfect sense to me. Stephen Moore added, “There’s an actual science behind the MRI scans that have revealed that handwriting increases neural activity in certain sections of the brain.” Handwriting, using pen and paper, lights up certain sections of the brain. We are using certain quadrants of our brain with handwriting that we don’t use when we’re at a keyboard. I found that fascinating. Another author, Patrick McLean, wrote, “In the defense of longhand, as much as I love technology, it drives us to distraction appendant paper has been one functionality, it captures the marks I make so that they can be referred to at a later time. So it keeps us in the present moment.” It’s effortless to delete, recreate, move, paste, and put it in a different order, which is a whole different kind of way of creating when using a keyboard. That’s why I think it is okay to use a keyboard for certain projects or parts of a project. I believe it is a balance to use some handwriting

and then use the keyboard for some parts. There is a balance between creative writing and device writing. Do you feel that way? Because, you know, that’s what we are all striving for—balance. In an article by Stephanie Rosa, she says, “It’s easy to find an app or a software platform to help you run your life, making pen and paper feel old school.” She says paper products offer advantages that some technology does not. For instance, whenever we want to recall something, we have better recall when we actually write it.

In this first Star Nations issue of 2020, you will find articles about New Year 2020, Chinese New Year, Sleep, Handwriting, Contrary, Spirit of Earth. Stephanie also lists one of the biggest assets that paper can provide is it stimulates our “reticular activating system”. I just had to find out what a reticular activating system meant. A reticular activating system is responsible for filtering out unnecessary information, which is helping our memory.

From The Editor

Instead of taking notes on a smartphone, laptop, she’s suggesting that we use pen and paper to record important information that we want to remember. Stephanie states when working with paper tools, your focus increases, and you can’t attempt to multitask. If you are making a list or writing an item using your phone, tablet or laptop, you may be distracted by an incoming email, or need to check your calendar, so you move in and out of your list-making. The art of handwriting is on the upswing. I think it’s coming back into our world. Stephanie also states when we partner paper with our devices; you get a better balance professionally and personally. When I read the two articles about handwriting, I knew I wanted to have a spiritual conversation about it, because I understand how our spirit or soul is flowing through a pen onto paper. The next

The Witch’s Cauldron

The Restful Cave By Adriane Campbell

The end of last year seemed to move so quickly, as if I blinked in November and my eyes opened to celebrate the new year. The energy felt very nonstop and a little chaotic, to be completely honest. It was the hustle and bustle of people running around, scrambling for holiday shopping, and preparing to entertain family and friends. It felt as though people were constantly thinking about time and how they needed more.

This time is now behind us as we now move into the first of the year and we are ready to rest. It’s a much calmer energy where we slow down and ground ourselves. Time to let go of that hectic feeling, into the Earth, and root ourselves into the true magic of the season. Allowing ourselves to feel with our hearts and to nourish ourselves - to fully connect and dive deep within. Winter is a time of death and the inner world. The days are shorter as an encouragement to reflect and rest. It is a time of shadow, but we know that this is not meant to be fearful or “bad”. It is a time where we can connect to ourselves at a much

deeper level to be able to follow and feel our inner knowing. For the true magic of sleep, I enjoy working with Bear medicine. I remember when I was a child, my grandmother would always steep us hot herbal teas. They were so relaxing, warm, and comforting. On the tea box there was a bear; I was always curious as to why there was a bear pictured on the box, but now I cannot image another character. From the herbs that the bear moved around in the forest, to the honey that dripped in my mug of healing elixir, it was perfect magic.
