Forewords I’m so thrilled that for the third year, the WOW - Women of the World festival will be in DerryLondonderry.

Since I launched WOW at London’s Southbank Centre in 2011, the movement has grown with WOW festivals in over 15 cities across 5 continents - Sydney, Brisbane, and a festival with the aboriginal community in Katherine in Australia, in Cambridge, Cardiff, Derry-Londonderry of course, Essex and Folkestone in the UK, Alexandria in Egypt, Hargeysa in Somaliland, Baltimore, New York in the USA with conversations happening in Washington D.C., new WOW festivals happening in Karachi in Pakistan, Dhakar in Bangladesh, and Mumbai in India, and WOW Commonwealth in 2018, as part of the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, with women and girls from across all 53 nations.

WOW attempts to raise and explore all of our concerns whilst also celebrating the huge potential of girls and women to make a different and more successful society for everyone.

At WOW we encourage fun, activism, openness to new subject matter and an opportunity to add your voice to the wealth of stories that girls and women from all ages, backgrounds and experiences are sharing. WOW Derry-Londonderry has become a place where people come to meet, celebrate and take action, celebrating the women and girls of the North West and the rest of the world - and taking a frank look at what still stops them from achieving their potential. This year, there’ll be communal spaces to meet and discuss topics with people you’ve just met, and talks on the Refugee Crisis, consent, gender, how to feed your family on a budget - and of course there’s the bellydancing. Don’t miss the chance to see Sandi Toksvig, Helena Kennedy and Kathy Lette, all part of the WOW family, who will join in local discussions as well as bringing their own expertise on everything from female friendship, female histories, and feminist knitting.

WOW Derry-Londonderry is for everyone. If you are a woman or you know a woman, WOW will have something to offer you. We have searched the North West and further afield to bring fun, exciting and thought-provoking speakers and performers to the festival. Amongst many others we are especially delighted to welcome Sandi Toksvig, Baroness Helena Kennedy and Kathy Lette to WOW Derry- Londonderry this year. The festival is run by the local women of the North West Women’s Collective (NWWC), who in partnership with Southbank Centre in London have created the very first and only WOW festival on the island of Ireland.

WOW Derry-Londonderry is part of an exciting growing global movement of WOW festivals, happening on 5 continents around the world. The festival is a brilliant and unique opportunity for women from all walks of life to gather, share, learn, celebrate and grow. There will be an emphasis on building community at this year’s WOW Derry-Londonderry. The festival attracts Taryn Gleeson diverse, inspiring, interesting and amazing people, so we’ve created a community room Executive Producer WOW where festival attendees can relax, chat and forge connections with other like minded folk. All Derry-Londonderry 2015 genders, nationalities and ages are welcome to attend WOW and most WOW events are free of charge. See you there!

WOW Schools Day, Friday 13th November WOW Derry – Londonderry dedicates one day of the festival to local secondary school students. The School’s Day motivates, inspires, educates and empowers students of all genders. The start event is a screening of WOW NOW. BBC Radio 1’s Gemma Cairney travelled around the UK interviewing girls and young women about their hopes, dreams and concerns. Following the screening girls from the North West will give a local perspective on the issues raised by the film. Representatives from the White Ribbon Campaign in Ireland will be talking to students about their male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women.

Sophie Bennett from UK Feminista returns with her workshop on Gender Equality and Activism. Maggie Green from The School Door gives a robotics class and Artist Cara Parks discusses her latest body of work looking at what we prioritise in our culture before creating an interactive art installation. Young women will take part in WOW Speed Mentoring, which is an exciting opportunity to be mentored by experts across many fields including theatre directors, journalists, scientists, campaigners, artists, speakers and more.

VOID Gallery Events The Eye of the Beholder Friday November 13th at 7.30pm Forty years on from the Fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War, do conscientious citizens and decision makers have the power to effect change? How do artists create a commentary and historical archive during times of conflict and war?

This panel discussion will be chaired by Orla Ryan, curator of Spring Watching Pavilion, an exhibition currently at Void Gallery. The discussion will reflect on contemporary art practise against a backdrop of humanitarian crisis, drawing parallels between the current refugee crisis and that of Vietnam in the 1970’s.

Baroness Helena Kennedy QC provided Kathy with the facts and details for the book. Join them both for this discussion about why Kathy wanted to write the book, the complexities of the case and how they reflect real life, and what she learnt as a result. Is poetic justice the only true justice available to women?

Possession Exorcism 2.30-3.20pm, Art Room The possession exorcism is an interactive installation where all of the items are up for grabs.

It is an exercise in recognising our rubbish and questioning our constant consumption. What do we really need to live? Are we compulsive incurable collectors? Do we have a healthy relationship with objects? With Cara Parks, broadcaster, performance artist, designer and actor.

Find out from serial entrepreneur Joanne Sweeney-Burke.Joanne was a finalist in the Irish Apprentice TV show and has been a broadcast journalist, a PR lecturer and a CEO many times over.

Joanne now runs Digital Minds Online and is the author of ‘Social Media Under Investigation’.

Minaj vs. Swift 2.00-2.50pm, Green Room What does the row between Nicky Minaj and Taylor Swift have to teach us about race? Should women of colour stand in solidarity with their White sisters and prioritise gender discrimination over racism as the most pressing issue of our time?

Or are White feminists out of touch with how discriminations play out in the real world for those unprotected by white privilege? What even is white privilege? This talk by journalist and author Claire Allen looks at questions like what influence does the media have on girls and women’s health and self-esteem? Do women and girls feel pressure to reach an unattainable ‘ideal’? How can women support each other to feel better about themselves? Claire will be joined by young artist and activist Emer Smith for this talk.

What Is Emotional Abuse?

4.00-4.50pm, Dance Studio With most of society aware that physical violence is not acceptable Domestic Abuse services are seeing a huge rise in the number of women seeking help for emotional abuse. So what is emotional abuse and how can you spot the signs of it? Join emotional abuse survivors and experts Caroline Ryan and Gina Watterson for this panel discussion chaired by Andrew Galvin who is a supporter and advocate for abuse victims.

Healing after the Loss of your Partner 4.30-5.20pm, Art Room This session is a safe, intimate and supportive discussion with Eilish Friel who shares her personal story of loss and Caroline Smyth-Kenyon the founder of Walk with Me. Caroline will talk about the support group she set up for young widows and widowers. Hear how both women found peace after the loss of their partners and how they now support others to share their stories.

Gender Quicksand 5.00-5.50pm, Dance Studio Gender identity is how you feel about and express your gender, gender roles are those that are pressed upon us by society. What does it mean to be a woman? What if you feel you’re really a man, or if you are gender fluid? Is our culture becoming more inclusive and accepting of non-binary gender roles? All this and more will be discussed by our panel, which includes a trans woman, Kayleigh/ Kendall Warren who identifies as gender fluidand Sarah Sproule who is an O.T specialising in working with trans people.
