Welcome Derry~Londonderry is a wonderful place; its ancient walls, fine architecture and hidden corners providing a spectacular backdrop for Lumiere, a four-day celebration of light. As the sensational City of Culture year draws to a close, we’re proud to bring this magical free event to the city.

Right across the city, artworks made from light will appear, ranging from spectacular projections to a magical fire garden, from unearthly flying figures to the brightest neons.

Make the most of Lumiere Lumiere is best experienced on foot, so wrap up warm, put on your waterproofs and explore the city at your leisure. There’s no set route and you don’t have to visit the installations in any particular order, but the tips below may help you plan your visit.

Fire alchemists Compagnie Carabosse use scrap metal, charcoal, and even cast-off clothing to create a magical fire garden on a huge scale in St Columb’s Park. Carabosse are one of France’s most important street arts groups, transforming streets and parks into flickering artworks that remind us of one of our most basic and elemental human needs.

One of the most successful bands ever to come out of Derry, the Undertones spoke to a generation, reacting against the backdrop of the Troubles by writing songs that reflected on the normality of growing up, of being young and in love. Deepa Mann-Kler’s Teenage Kicks quotes a line from one their most celebrated songs.

Tim Etchells’ steel letters adorned with hundreds of LED lights will measure 23m long. The wording makes a playful but direct reference to the historical context of shirtmaking. It recalls the complete text of the proverb from which it is taken (A Stitch In Time Saves Nine), suggesting ideas of repair and care, and of disaster averted.

Rising up to 14 metres high above the ground, Symphonie Conique creates a surreal universe of illuminated cones that move and sway in reaction to the crowd.

The clocktower building on Ebrington Square will be transformed into an imaginary world painted by 120 local children. 8 and 9 year olds from all faith traditions were invited to play a virtual game of consequences, painted onto a model of the building. The children were filmed during the workshops, and the final projection will include footage of them working together as well as their artworks.

The Empty Plinth will be the first of a series of installations to be mounted on Walker’s plinth. Consisting of a simple beam of light, it will rise into the sky, a symbolic beacon of hope.

Wodiczko is renowned for his large-scale projections around the world. His work often involves the active participation of a city’s marginalised or estranged residents.

For this new commission, he has been working with community groups and the Verbal Arts Centre to create a mobile artwork that will project testimonies of local people onto the sides of buildings.

This piece explores an effect known as ‘regional brain conflict’, it manipulates the connection between the parts of the brain that process written words and the parts that process colour. The installation sees the colours of the Tricolour and the Union Jack spelled out in different colours, causing confusion and questioning the allegiances the flags engender.

Marbles is a group of large, moulded plastic shapes that interact with people using sound, colour and light. In days gone by Derry-Londonderry was a centre of shirt-making, with dozens of shirt factories scattered around the city. Hilary Sleiman and Lesley Bond’s piece pays tribute to an industry that was once so important, with a series of ghostly shirts appearing in the windows of the old factory.

Spinning Night In Living Colour samples Van Gogh’s painting, All Night Café, like a spinning record with a shaking video camera. It is transformed into a series of moving lines, reinterpreting the original colour palette. This will be the first time that this artwork has been displayed outdoors and on such a large scale.
