Highlights of this year’s event include talks by human rights activist Peter Tatchell, who has been campaigning for human rights for over 40 years, on issues of democracy, civil liberties, social equality, environmental protection, peace and global justice.

From 1971, he was a leading activist in the Gay Liberation Front in London; staging the first ever gay rights protest in a communist country, East Germany, in 1973.

This year the Foyle Film Festival Intercultural & Anti Racism Programme will take place over ten days from Wednesday 21-Friday 30 March. For the seventh consecutive year, this important annual event offers primary, post-primary schools, colleges, universities, community groups, and the general public, a programme of international films, documentaries, presentations, workshops, and outreach screenings, exploring the themes and issues involved. For the first time the Intercultural & Anti-racism Programme will include outreach events in Queen’s Film Theatre in Belfast, the Alley Arts Centre in Strabane, and the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny.

This annual event is aimed at raising awareness around issues such as racism, discrimination and harassment – including racist bullying. It seeks to educate children, young people, and the wider public, to accept, value, and embrace diversity in all its forms – whether race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, the poor, migrants, minorities, those with physical disabilities – as well as encouraging awareness of local and global issues like war, human rights abuses, and the environment. The long-term objectives and outcomes of the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme are to promote tolerance and inclusion.

The education programme showcases feature films, short films and documentaries from around the world in an effort to bring different landscapes, languages, beliefs, and cultures into the classroom. The objectives of this diverse programme of educational events is to broaden children¹s and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. When possible, the programme also provides additional free resources for schools,

Other highlights include screenings of the film The Lady which is the extraordinary story of Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Anna Roberts, Executive Director of Burma Campaign UK, will introduce this screening and take part in a Q&A afterwards. Also included in this year’s programme is the innovative documentary The First Movie. Made

While in As We Forgive two Rwandan women come face to face with the men who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide. In Benda Bilili, a group of street musicians from the Congo have been hailed the new Buena Vista Social Club. While the award-winning God Grew Tired Of Us explores the unbeatable spirit of three “Lost Boys” from Sudan who built productive and rewarding new lives for themselves in America.

Emmanuel’s Gift celebrates the remarkable Emmanuel Ofosu from Ghana who was born with a deformed leg yet rode a bicycle across the country in order to eradicate the negative perception of the disabled.

We are delighted that Mrs Doreen Lawrence will help launch the Foyle Film Festival Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme on Wednesday 21 March.

Mrs Lawrence has dedicated the last 18 years of her life fighting to secure justice for her murdered son Stephen, and other victims of racially motivated crime. On Tuesday 3 January this year Gary Dobson and David Norris were found guilty of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993. Mrs Doreen Lawrence will also take part in an educational talk aimed at post-primary schools, colleges, universities, and the general public.

Bullying In The Digital Age: Cyber Bullying Beatbullying is the UK's leading bullying prevention charity, creating a world where bullying, violence and harassment are unacceptable. Beatbullying empowers people to understand, recognise, and say no to bullying, violence and harassment.

Young people who are being bullied at school are not able to make the most of themselves and their talents, because their ability to learn, to contribute, to be happy and just be a child, is undermined and sometimes lost forever by bullying. The introduction of progressive bullying prevention programmes in the UK will reduce bullying, reduce truancy levels, increase attainment and reduce the incidents of racist and homophobic violence and abuse in our schools.

This special school based event will concentrate specifically on Cyberbullying. The latest figures from Beatbullying reveal that nearly one-in-three 11-16 year olds has been deliberately targeted, threatened or humiliated by an individual or group through the use of mobile phones or the internet.

For a quarter of these the experience was ongoing, meaning that 1-in-13 children were persistently cyber bullied. Mrs Doreen Lawrence will introduce this documentary and answer questions after the screening. Mrs Lawrence has spent the last 18 years fighting to secure justice for her murdered son Stephen, and other victims of racially motivated crime. On Tuesday 3 January, Gary Dobson and David Norris were found guilty of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993. This documentary follows Doreen Lawrence for the twelve months leading up to these convictions.

A Panorama special detailing the death of Stephen Lawrence in April 1993, following the recent conviction of Gary Dobson and David Norris for murder. For more than a year, reporter Mark Daly and the Panorama team have followed Stephen’s mother Doreen as her 18-year fight for justice neared its conclusion. The film charts the history of the case through the eyes of a grieving mother, and features an account of the trial.

Mrs Doreen Lawrence Doreen Lawrence was born in Jamaica and travelled to the UK when she was nine years old. After leaving secondary school she married and had three children, two boys, Stephen and Stuart and a daughter, Georgina.

Doreen returned to education as a mature student and while studying for a degree her son Stephen was murdered by a group of white youths as he and a friend waited for a bus in Eltham, south-east London. Doreen has spent 18 years fighting for justice for Stephen, and other victims of racially motivated crime. This campaign led to a public inquiry, which uncovered blunders by the Metropolitan police, blamed on institutional racism, enabling Stephen’s murderers to escape justice for almost two decades. On Tuesday 3 January this year Gary Dobson and David Norris were finally convicted of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence.

In the wake of the verdict, Doreen Lawrence was critical of the original Scotland Yard investigation into Stephen’s death in 1993, saying: “Had the police done their job properly, I would have spent the last 18 years grieving for my son rather than fighting to get his killers to court.”

Doreen Lawrence is the Director of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. The Trust was set up in 1998 to give bursaries to young people who want to study architecture because that was Stephen’s ambition. There is now a Stephen Lawrence Centre built in Stephen’s memory to provide a broader range of the professional and vocational skills that help shape our environment. Mrs Lawrence continues to campaign against racism and bigotry, and is in great demand visiting schools, and other organisations.

In this presentation, Peter Tatchell will argue that gay rights are indivisible from human rights and are guaranteed in international law. Yet more than 70 countries still criminalise homosexuality, with punishments ranging up to life imprisonment and even execution. More than half of these countries are members of the Commonwealth, which professes a commitment to equality and human rights. Most of these antigay laws were imposed by European imperial powers during the period of colonialism. Nowadays, some countries, such as India, are abolishing their colonial-era anti-gay legislation.

When Nelson Mandela became President in South Africa, his government agreed a new constitution, which outlawed discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. But in many parts of Africa, homophobic persecution is intensifying, with arrests in Cameroon and attempts in Uganda to impose the death penalty for homosexual acts and life imprisonment for mere kissing or touching by same-sex couples. Peter Tatchell will conclude by revealing how worldwide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are organising - some openly, others covertly - to demand equal human rights, including in Russia, Iraq, China, Iran, Argentina, Mexico, Jamaica, Pakistan and Uganda.

Peter Tatchell Peter Tatchell has been campaigning for human rights for over 40 years, on issues of democracy, civil liberties, social equality, environmental protection, peace and global justice.

He began his human rights campaigning in 1967, against the death penalty and for Aboriginal rights in his homeland of Australia. From 1971, he was a leading activist in the Gay Liberation Front in London; staging the first ever gay rights protest in a communist country, East Germany, in 1973. Peter was the defeated Labour candidate in the 1983 Bermondsey by-election, the dirtiest, most violent and homophobic election in Britain in the twentieth century.

He co-founded the queer rights group OutRage! in 1990. Over two decades ago, he warned of the dangers of global warming, resource depletion, species extinction and environmental degradation. In 2009, he won Campaigner of the Year at the Observer Ethical Awards. He is the UK Green Party’s human rights spokesperson.

As in other developing countries, Ghana is not a good place to have a disability. Parents either poison their disabled children, or leave them to die in the forest. It’s called “seeing off”. At best, the disabled are expected to become beggars for life. A disability is not viewed as an accident, but as a punishment from a deity, and a curse. In Ghana 10% of the population – or 2 million people – are disabled. When Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah was born with one twisted deformed leg, his father abandoned the family. But he refuses to accept the limitations that society has placed on him. Emmanuel rode a bicycle across Ghana (about 600 kilometres) on one leg to eradicate his country’s negative perception of the disabled. Peter will argue that as we evolve into a sexually enlightened and accepting society, homosexuality and heterosexuality will begin to fade as separate, exclusive orientations and identities. A majority of people will be open to the possibility of both opposite-sex and same-sex desires, regardless of whether they act upon them. They won’t feel the need to label themselves (or others) as gay or straight because, in a future non-homophobic civilisation, no one will care who loves who. Love will transcend sexual orientation.

Filmmakers Justine Scoltock and Katherine Rowlandson from Derry Productions, will introduce this screening and take part in a Q&A session afterwards.

In 2011, Derry/Londonderry held it's second ever annual Gay Pride parade, drawing more than 6,000 people to walk the streets in support of the gay community. This short film takes this parade as its starting point and explores some of the complex reactions to it locally. It examines the impact of the parade, the reasons for holding it, it's place within Derry/Londonderry's history of civil rights campaigning and the ongoing issue of homophobia in the north west. This is the question confronted by Rosaria and Chantale – two Rwandan women who come face to face with two men who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide. Rosario calmly relates that the attackers killed her husband and their four children. She shows a wide, ragged scar on her back, and a blackened puncture on her leg, saying, “This is where they stabbed me with a knife.” A few months after the slaughter, Rosario gave birth to a daughter and named her Cadeau, “gift.” Chantale, on the other hand, is frozen with rage. She and her brother are the only survivors among 30 family members. Her quiet reserve shields a profound depression.

“Since the genocide, nothing makes me happy,” she says. “Joy lasts only a few minutes and then it’s gone.”

What we haven’t heard before is what the attackers feel. John was a neighbour of Chantale’s father. “At one point, he was going to give a cow to my in-laws. We used to drink beer together,” he says. John was part of a gang that dragged him to a crossroads and beat him to death with clubs and machetes.

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell briefly reveals what makes him tick and talks about some of his best known protests: attempting a citizen’s arrest of President Mugabe, taking on heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson, outing ten Anglican bishops and staging the first gay rights protest in a communist country (East Germany, 1973). But most of this event will be an audience-led Q and A. This special event will be hosted by Malachai O’Hara from The Rainbow Project.
