Foyle film festival Education Programme 2013

26th FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME Monday 18 to Friday 29 November 2013 As the inaugural UK City of Culture draws to a successful conclusion, the theme of this year’s FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL is LEGACY. The education programme explores how historical events such as the Holocaust and the Civil Rights struggle in the 1960s

have been recorded and remembered. To mark the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s iconic “I have a dream” speech the festival investigates why it continues to inspire and influence the contemporary world in a way that no other single piece of oratory has managed to achieve.

Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental returns to the Foyle Film Festival to discuss the impact of the Holocaust on his own life and also on the wider society. Tomi will also provide an insightful introduction to accompany a special 20th Anniversary screening of Schindler’s List.

While Teaching Divided Histories Conference welcomes international guest speakers to Derry/ Londonderry to explore the legacy of conflicts across the globe.

The festival education programme marks AntiBullying Week (18-22 November) with a series of hands on workshops exploring this issue.

The legacy of mankind’s destruction of the environment is placed under the microscope in the documentary Trashed.

In the same way that Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth focused the world’s attention on global warming,

Trashed highlights the huge negative impact that the trash and waste we produce has on the environment.

Narrated by Jeremy Irons, the Oscar® winning actor attends the festival to discuss this very issue.

In honour of the Turner Prize coming to Derry~Londonderry as part of this year’s City of Culture, art historian Tim Marlow attends the Foyle Film Festival Education Programme to deliver a special talk to post primary students on ‘The Role Of Painting In The Digital Age’.

Foyle Film Festival also showcases young artists with an art exhibition

(Void Gallery) featuring 25 contemporary student pieces from across Northern Ireland. While Moving Image Arts celebrates ten glorious and productive years of student filmmaking with CCEA’s Moving Image Arts Showcase at the Brunswick Moviebowl. The MIA Student Awards are sponsored by City of Derry Crystal.

There is a huge selection of films, workshops, guest masterclasses, outreach programmes and satellite events, on offer as part of this year’s 26th Foyle Film Festival Education Programme, and we look forward to welcoming your school to this year’s event.

The FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL is the flagship project of the NERVE CENTRE. The festival is funded by Northern Ireland Screen and Derry City Council.

The cultural mythology of the Earth’s only satellite made for an enchanting story in Tomi Ungerer’s children’s book Moon Man (Der Mondmann), and now this adorable adventure has been adapted for the big screen. Embellished with affectionate references to modern space exploration, the cheerfully animated and jovially toned feature engages in its nuanced narrative of understanding and acceptance, as its namesake tries to find his place in the world.

Lonely in his post looking down on mankind, and unaware of the joy his presence brings to children worldwide, Moon Man

descends in search of company. Those still imbued with wonder greet him with warmth, including eccentric inventor Bunsen van der Dunkel, the less engaged brand him an extra-terrestrial invader.

The film delivers a lesson about trust and friendship and reminds us that there is no place like home. A favourite line occurs when a character looks right at the camera and states, “A man can work faster alone but together you get further.”

In the end, the Moon Man reminds us all that we are all important and have something to contribute.

This hands on workshop will give pupils the opportunity to use fun and exciting ICT skills to investigate how we see others and ourselves. Looking at the key themes in the animated film Macropolis, pupils can create their own short film using stop-motion animation with iPads.

A Fablab is a fully kitted, high tech fabrication laboratory in which practically anything can be designed and prototyped using state of the art machines, including 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC router, vinyl cutter and milling machine.

In this workshop, participants will create their own T-shirt to mark Derry~Londonderry’s special UK City of Culture year.

TEACHING DIVIDED HISTORIES INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Presented by the Nerve Centre and the British Council, the ‘Teaching Divided Histories’ international conference will examine the role of culture, creativity and curriculum as tools to help schools in conflicted societies address the past. The use of a digitally creative approach to conflict education will be examined and debated, as well as its role in both the communication of, and learning from, conflict.

The conference will have a specific focus on film and moving image, and will feature conversations and presentations from internationally acclaimed filmmakers including: Mariane Pearl, Writer of ‘A Mighty Heart’.

Olly Lambert, Journalist and documentary maker ‘Syria: Across the Lines’.

Andrew Eaton, Producer of ‘In This World’.

Over the two day event sessions will examine: Documenting Conflict - the role of moving image and digital media in communicating and reporting conflict; Creative Responses to Conflict - the use of creative media, specifically film and moving image, to communicate conflict and aid understanding; Teaching Divided Histories current practice in education around the teaching of conflicted and contentious histories.

International perspectives will be delivered by participants from India, South Africa, Scotland and the Lebanon, and will blend with the local context in Northern Ireland and Ireland.

The conference will act as an opportunity to showcase some

of the work produced through the TDH project to date. It will also serve as a platform to some of those who have actively participated in, and benefitted from, the project to share their experiences.

A programme of outreach workshops for schools will also be delivered.

In the 50th anniversary year of Martin Luther King’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech, we are taking inspiration from some of the most powerful and thought provoking words of the 20th century.

Using kinetic typography and imagery, pupils will create animations bringing to life some of the world’s greatest speeches, and the words that shaped the world.

(Oskar Schindler’s Farewell Address to Jewish Factory Workers at Brünnlitz, 7th May 1945) In the 20th anniversary year of Steven Spielberg’s SCHINDLER’S LIST we look to the stories of a Europe “goose-stepped … into misery and bloodshed” (Charlie Chaplin, 1940), exploring the images and listening to the voices of a lost generation.

Using archive clips to create unique movie and audio edits, pupils will create their own capsule sensory journey through a war that changed the world.

Jeremy Irons stands on a beach beside the ancient Lebanese city of Sidon. Above him towers a mountain of rubbish, a pullulating eyesore of medical waste, household trash, toxic fluids and dead

animals, the result of thirty years of consumption by just one small city out of how many in the world? As the day’s new consignments are tipped on top, debris tumbles off the side and into the blue of the Mediterranean. Surrounded by a vast reach of plastic bottles, a forlorn Jeremy Irons stares at the horizon. “Appalling,” he mutters. In the new docufeature TRASHED, which received a Special Screening at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The beauty of the planet from space forms a violent contrast to the scenes of human rubble across the globe.

Vast landscapes in China are covered in tons of rubbish. The wide waters of the Ciliwung River in Indonesia are now barely visible under a neverending tide of plastic. Children swim among leaking bags;

mothers wash in the sewagefilled supply. Each year, we now throw away fifty-eight billion disposable cups, billions of plastic bags, 200 billion litres of water bottles, billions of tons of household waste, toxic waste and e-waste.

CLOSE-UP ON JEREMY IRONS: Jeremy Irons has had a long and distinguished career on stage and screen for over 30 years.

Jeremy Irons first came to public attention in the late 70s when he starred in Granada TV’s Brideshead Revisited - his distinctive voice contributing much to the nostalgic feel and success of the iconic series. His most recent television appearance was in Neil Jordan’s historical fiction drama series The Borgias.

Jeremy’s most high profile film roles include the Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Mission and the dual role of twin physicians in David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers. Other films include Danny Champion Of The World and Reversal Of Fortune for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. In Louis Malle’s Damage Irons starred alongside Juliette Binoche and Miranda Richardson playing a politician who has a sexual relationship with his son’s girlfriend.

More recently Iron’s films include a western written, directed and starred in by Ed Harris called Appaloosa and The Pink Panther 2 with Steve Martin and Jean Reno.

DIRECTOR GERRY GREGG WILL JOIN HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR TOMI REICHENTAL TO INTRODUCE THIS SPECIAL SCREENING. BOTH MEN WILL ALSO TAKE PART IN A POSTSCREENING DISCUSSION. Gerry Gregg’s 2008 documentary Till The Tenth Generation followed Tomi Reichental, one of two surviving Holocaust victims living in Ireland, as he returned to Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp to face the horrors of his past. Five years later, Gerry Gregg’s sequel, Close To Evil, follows Tomi’s quest to find one of the SS guards who kept him captive.

In 1945 Tomi Reichental was a nine-year-old boy starving to death in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. SS woman Hilde Lisiewicz was one of the Nazi guards that kept Tomi and his family in brutal captivity.

Now ninety-one years old Hilde lives alone in Hamburg - a devout Roman Catholic and popular in her parish. An RTÉ

Radio interview leads Tomi to go in search of Hilde and his horrific past.

CLOSE-UP ON TOMI REICHENTAL: Born in 1935 in Bratislava (Capital City of Slovakia) to a Jewish family, Tomi Reichental was arrested by the Gestapo in October 1944 while standing in a grocery store. Tomi as well as twelve other members of his family were taken into custody and then transported in cattle wagons to Bergen Belsen and Buchanwald. At the conclusion of the war it was discovered that Tomi had lost 35 members of his family following their detention in these camps. Tomi moved to Ireland in 1959 and settled down to raise his family and build a new life in Dublin in the 1960s.

Tomi now delivers talks to schools throughout Ireland, and beyond. In recognition of his

tireless work in the combating of xenophobia and racism, and in particular his commitment to the cause of reconciliation and highlighting the futility of hatred, earlier this year Tomi was honored by the German President with the nation’s highest award to an individual, the Order of Merit. Tomi returns to the Foyle Film Festival with his message of peace and reconciliation.

CLOSE-UP ON GERRY GREGG: Gerry Gregg is an international Emmy Award winning Producer/ Director, who has been making television programmes and films since joining RTE in the late 70s. After eight years with RTE, during which time Gerry was at the heart of the path breaking “Today Tonight”

Current Affairs team. In 2000 Gerry set up his own production company - Praxis Pictures.

Since then he has established a reputation as one of Ireland’s most accomplished filmmakers.

Gerry produced and directed the Emmy award-winning film Witness To Murder for Channel 4 Dispatches.

In 2009 Gerry completed the feature length documentary Till The Tenth Generation, the story of Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental. The film has screened at festivals throughout the world - including Foyle Film Festival, and is now used in all Irish post-primary Schools as part of the Irish Department of Education’s commitment to Holocaust education.

Gerry returns to the Foyle Film Festival this year with Close To Evil, which continues his association with Tomi Reichental as he attempts to trace one of the SS female guards who kept him captive during the Holocaust.

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation, whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. He fiercely guards his anonymity to avoid prosecution. An eccentric French shopkeeper turned documentary maker attempts to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner.

THE ROLE OF PAINTING IN THE DIGITAL AGE WITH ART HISTORIAN TIM MARLOW

Tim Marlow is an art historian, writer, broadcaster on the contemporary cultural scene, art historian and current Director of Exhibitions at White Cube in London.

Tim Marlow founded Tate: The Art Magazine in 1993. From 1991 to 1998 he presented Radio 4’s arts programme Kaleidoscope, for which he won a Sony Award, and is currently a presenter of the World Service arts programme The Ticket. As well as numerous arts programmes for Five, he presented a documentary on JMW Turner for BBC One. Other television work included presenting the now notorious Is Painting Dead? debate for Channel Four in which artist, Tracy Emin, swore and shouted her way into British television history.

The impact of digital technology has radically transformed traditional activities such as painting and sculpture, while

completely new forms, such as net art, digital installation, and virtual reality, have emerged as recognised artistic practices.

Writer, broadcaster and art historian Tim Marlow attends this year’s Foyle Film Festival to examine the role of painting in a world that has been shaped by the huge advances in digital media.

Tim Marlow is the author of various books including monographs of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin and the Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele as well as a survey of great artists published by Faber. He has written extensively on art and culture in the British press including the Times, the Guardian, the Independent on Sunday and Arena, Art Monthly and Blueprint magazines. He is visiting lecturer at Winchester School of Art and an examiner on the Sculpture MA and former Creative Director of Sculpture at Goodwood.

CCEA’s Moving Image Arts awards showcase was first launched by the Foyle Film Festival in 2003 and to celebrate this ten year milestone will also include a Best of 10 Years retrospective, featuring some of the most impressive films created by students in previous years.

Bernard McCloskey, Head of Education with Northern Ireland Screen and Chair of the judging panel says: “A key objective of the Moving Image Arts A-Level and GCSE qualifications is to support the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers. The judges continue to be very impressed by the high standard of work produced every year.

Yet again, Moving Image Arts students have created a wide range of films displaying creativity, ingenuity and a real understanding of the art of filmmaking.”

The showcase of over 25 films will take place on 26th November in the Brunswick Moviebowl with awards presented for best film and animation at GCSE, AS and A2 level, sponsored by City of Derry Crystal.

Michael Barwise, a former Moving Image Arts student at Oakgrove Integrated College will also speak at the event. He is currently producing five films funded by Northern Ireland Screen and openly credits Moving Image Arts with helping him to pursue his current career path:

A Fab Lab is a fully kitted, high tech fabrication laboratory in which practically anything can be designed and prototyped using state of the art machines, including 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC router, vinyl cutter and milling machine.

In this special workshop, participants will design a T-shirt highlighting the problems and issues involved in bullying.
