WELCOME Foyle Film Festival’s 14th Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme takes place from Friday 15-Friday 29 March. For over a decade now this important educational event offers primary, post-primary schools, colleges, community groups, and the general public, a programme of international films, documentaries, workshops, and outreach screenings, exploring the themes and issues involved. This annual event is aimed at raising awareness around issues pertaining to human rights and equality - such as racism, prejudice, homophobia, discrimination and harassment including racist bullying. The objectives of this diverse programme are to broaden children¹s and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. While also providing a platform to highlight stories that challenge and educate the general public. The long-term objectives and outcomes of the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme are to promote conversations around human rights, equality, tolerance and inclusion - across the board - on the principle that you can’t just fight for one minority group - you need to fight for all. Prejudice should not be accepted as an inevitable human response to those we judge to be different from ourselves, or the majority. As so succinctly expressed by Sir Ian McKellan in the documentary 50 Years Legal, which screens as part of this year’s programme, “No-one’s born prejudiced, they learn it, and they can unlearn it very quickly.” Bernie McLaughlin Director & Programmer

OUTREACH PACKAGE ONE

USA.2018 | DIRECTOR(S): KAREY KIRKPATRICK, JASON REISIG | CAST: CHANNING TATUM, JAMES CORDEN, ZENDAYA, COMMON, LEBRON JAMES, DANNY DEVITO, GINA RODRIGUEZ | DURATION: 1HR 36MINS | CERT: PG SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 1 & 2 AREAS OF LEARNING: PDMU / WAU / COMMUNICATION / LANGUAGE & LITERACY THEMES: KINDNESS / CURIOSITY / BRAVERY / TRUTH/ EMBRACING DIFFERENCE / LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER In Smallfoot, director Karey Kirkpatrick takes a stab at resolving political difference, fake news and partisan thinking through the medium of an animated children’s blockbuster. The story follows Migo, a young yeti whose mountaintop paradise is interrupted when a human pilot crash-lands in front of him, putting him face to face with the legendary smallfoot. The discovery upsets the balance of the small yeti village and Migo must decide whether to join in the lie or join the resistance and find the truth. He is helped by a budding friendship with the human, Percy, a washed-up wildlife TV presenter. 8

Smallfoot touches on important themes such as diversity and acceptance, but does so in a way that does not feel forced. “Smallfoot (pushes) young viewers to question culturally coded notions of good and evil.” Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazine “The driving theme here is truth, and how very hard it can be to find. Question, be brave, explore science as well as faith. Maybe sing a song.” George Wolf, UK Film Review “Beneath the easy slapstick, there’s a timely moral too: Don’t fear the unknown, embrace it. Just try not to squish it.” Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly “The characters…drive the thematic concerns of the film, encouraging a strong moral backbone that inspires minds to question inconsistencies within the regulated order of their society.” Andrew Gaudion, The Hollywood News

POST PRIMARY PROGRAMME

FIRST MAN

MARKING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APOLLO MOON LANDING MONDAY 25 MARCH @ 10AM | VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL USA/JAPAN.2018 | DIRECTOR: DAMIEN CHAZELLE | CAST: RYAN GOSLING, CLAIRE FOY, JASON CLARKE, KYLE CHANDLER, CIARÁN HINDS | DURATION: 2HRS 21MINS | CERT:12A | DISTRIBUTOR: UNIVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 3 (YRS 9&10), KS 4, & SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / SCIENCE / LLW / CITIZENSHIP LANGUAGE & LITERACY THEMES: AMBITION / DETERMINATION / SACRIFICE / THE ROLE OF WOMEN / FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS A film that puts the spotlight on the life of the legendary American Astronaut Neil Armstrong from 1961-1969, on his journey to becoming the first human to walk the moon. Exploring the sacrifices and costs on the nation and Armstrong himself, during one of the most dangerous missions in the history of space travel. Delivering one of the most mature performances of his career, Gosling tracks the trajectory of a man on his way to becoming

an icon. The easy charisma of the young Armstrong is ultimately replaced with an increasingly aloof commander who relates to his children as if fielding questions in a press conference. Claire Foy delivers a strong performance, that still resonates in the present day, as a young woman unwilling to accept the narrow role of the astronaut’s wife. Nominated for four Oscars®. “Ryan Gosling delivers the most mature performance of his career as Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s fourth feature, a film that manages to make the iconic Moon landing story feel fresh again.” John Bleasdale, Sight & Sound “Chazelle is an ambitious filmmaker who makes films about ambition.” A.O. Scott, The New York Times

GREEN BOOK

WEDNESDAY 27 MARCH @ 10AM | VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL

USA.2018 | DIRECTOR: PETER FARRELLY | CAST: VIGGO MORTENSEN, MAHERSHALA ALI, LINDA CARDELLINI | DURATION: 2HRS 10MINS | CERT: 12A | LANGUAGE: ENGLISH/ITALIAN/ RUSSIAN/GERMAN | DISTRIBUTOR: ENTERTAINMENT ONE SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 3 (YRS 9&10), KS 4, & SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / POLITICS / LLW / PDMU / WAU / SOCIAL SKILLS / CITIZENSHIP / PROMOTING THINKING SKILLS AND PERSONAL CAPABILITIES THEMES: SEGREGATION / INTOLERANCE / RACISM / PREJUDICE / BIGOTRY / HUMAN RIGHTS A Green Book was a handbook for black motorists seeking “vacation without aggravation” - an indispensable travel guide listing friendly places to stay and tips for avoiding trouble in the Jim Crow American South. Thus Green Book is the perfect title for a road movie relating the true story of the unlikely friendship that develops between 12

a black concert pianist and the New York bouncer hired to chauffeur him through unfriendly territory. Won an Oscar®. “Green Book is about two men from opposite sides of the track who find a way to come to terms with one another via a road trip.” Tracee Bond, Irish Film Critic “I walked from the auditorium, eyes wet from the total enjoyment of a film that I cannot wait to go and see again. Green Book is not only one of the enjoyable films of TIFF 2018, but one of the best of the year. Expect this to be a serious Oscar® contender across too. It’s that good.” Paul Heath, The Hollywood News

ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED

MARKING THE 90TH BIRTHDAY OF ANNE FRANK THURSDAY 28 MARCH @ 10AM | VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL UK/USA/NETHERLANDS.1995 | DIRECTOR: JON BLAIR | CAST: MIEP GIES, HANNELI GOSLAR, JANNY BRANDES-BRILSLIJPER, ROSE DE LIEMA, SAL DE LIEMA, BUDDY ELIAS | DURATION: 1HR 57MINS | CERT: PG | DISTRIBUTOR: THE JON BLAIR FILM COMPANY SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3 (YRS 9&10), KS4, SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / POLITICS / WAU / CITIZENSHIP THEMES: THE HOLOCAUST / DISCRIMINATION / PREJUDICE / NAZI GERMANY / FAMILY / GROWING UP NARRATED BY: Kenneth Branagh. Diary Readings by Glenn Close & Joely Richardson. Using previously unreleased archival material and contemporary interviews, Anne Frank Remembered tells the moving story of the Frank family and presents an honest and realistic portrait of their brash and free-spirited daughter Anne, perhaps the world’s most famous victim of the Holocaust after the publication of her diary, which has been translated into 67 languages and sold over 30 million copies. The film includes

interviews with people who knew the Frank family, most notably Miep Gies, who risked death to help shelter the family. Anne Frank’s story is particularly meaningful to young people today as for many she is their first, if not their only, exposure to the history of the Holocaust. Won an Oscar®. “It is said that one picture is worth a thousand words… Anne Frank Remembered, however, proves again and again that in remembering a historical event as horrific as the Holocaust, nothing brings home its reality with more shattering force than the verbal accounts of those who lived through it.” Stephen Holden, The New York Times “A masterpiece.” The Independent 13

OUTREACH PACKAGE TWO

KUSAMA - INFINITY USA.2018 | DIRECTOR: HEATHER LENZ | CAST: YAYOI KUSAMA | DURATION: 1HR 16MINS | CERT: 12A | DISTRIBUTOR: DOGWOOF

SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 3 (YRS 9&10), KS 4, & SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: LLW / PDMU / WAU / SOCIAL SKILLS / CITIZENSHIP / PROMOTING THINKING SKILLS AND PERSONAL CAPABILITIES / ART THEMES: PREJUDICE / FAMILY / FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS / BELIEVING IN YOURSELF / BRAVERY / EMPOWERMENT / BEING DIFFERENT / MENTAL ILLNESS / THE ROLE OF WOMEN / CREATIVITY Now the top-selling female artist in the world, Yayoi Kusama overcame countless odds to bring her radical artistic vision to the world stage. For decades, her work pushed boundaries that often alienated her from her peers and those in power in the art world. Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her - the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a culture where that was a particular shame, and eventually growing old and continuing to pursue and be

devoted to her art full time. In spite of it all, Kusama has endured and has created a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry, and novels. After working as an artist for over six decades, people around the globe are experiencing her Infinity Mirrored Rooms in record numbers, as Kusama continues to create new work every day. “An endlessly fascinating documentary about an inspiring life, but it is also a universal story.” Alci Rengifo, Entertainment Voice “A visually exuberant documentary that tenderly traces the enthralling career of the maverick, mentally ill Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.” Lisa Jo Sagolla, Film Journal International “Like her work, the film sneaks up on you. The pieces move from interesting to mesmerizing.” Eleanor Ringel Cater, Saporta Report

OUTREACH PACKAGE THREE

MAIDEN

MARKING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST ALL FEMALE CREW TO COMPETE IN THE WHITBREAD ROUND THE WORLD RACE. UK.2018 | DIRECTOR: ALEX HOLMES | CAST: TRACY EDWARDS, SALLY CREASER, ANGELA FARRELL, JO GOODING, NANCY HILL, JENI MUNDY, MICHELLE PARET, CLAIRE RUSSELL, DAWN RILEY, TANJA VISSER, MIKAELA VON KOSKULL, MANDI SWAN, MARIE-CLAUDE HEYS | DURATION: 1HR 37MINS | CERT: 12A | DISTRIBUTOR: DOGWOOF SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 3 (YRS 9&10), KS 4, & SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: LLW / PDMU / WAU / SOCIAL SKILLS / CITIZENSHIP / PROMOTING THINKING SKILLS AND PERSONAL CAPABILITIES THEMES: ADVENTURE / DETERMINATION / FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS / BELIEVING IN YOURSELF / BRAVERY / EMPOWERMENT / SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING The inspiring true story of Tracy Edwards, a 24 year old cook on charter boats, who became the skipper of the first ever allfemale crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. It starts with a warning: “The ocean’s always trying to kill you, it doesn’t take a break.” But the terrors awaiting the subjects of Alex Holmes’ crowd-pleasing documentary Maiden go far beyond the sea itself. Tracing the journey of forward-thinking female sailor Tracy Edwards, Maiden unspools a 16

heart-pounding race around the world, but the true challenges facing Edwards and her all-woman crew include institutionalised sexism, a media circus unable to look beyond a splashy story, and crushing self-doubt. It’s a timely and relevant story about bold women breaking down barriers while some of their male counterparts go through the motions - dismissing them, gawking at them, not believing them, and finally, begrudgingly, letting them in. That it’s set mostly in the late-’80s doesn’t diminish its relevance one bit. Shattering a glass ceiling has rarely been more engrossing - or gruelling - than it is in Maiden. “It’s an incredible story, and (director) Holmes keeps a sharp eye on its cultural commentary to make it a part of a contemporary conversation.” Nick Allen, Roger Ebert “Alex Holmes’ documentary about Tracy Edwards and her all-woman Whitbread sailing crew is both timely and intensely relevant.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire
