Welcome The theme of this year’s Foyle Film Festival is ‘Against the Odds’ as the programme highlights the incredible true stories of ordinary people who have overcome the odds to achieve extraordinary things.

The festival launches with the Northern Ireland premiere of A United Kingdom.

Set in 1947, it is the inspirational true story of Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), a brilliant African law student in London, and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white English clerical worker from Eltham in south London. The couple meet at a Missionary Society Dance and they fall in love. What he didn’t tell her until later, however, was that he was a Prince and the future King of Bechuanaland. Their relationship coincides with South Africa introducing its apartheid laws to separate blacks and whites.

Driving With Selvi is a compelling documentary that tells the story of South India’s first female taxi driver.

At 14 years old, Selvi Gowda was a child bride, forcibly married to an abusive husband. Selvi finds the courage to escape and, over a ten-year period, transforms her life by learning to drive and starting her own taxi company.

The Innocents is the true story of Mathilde a young French doctor working for the Red Cross taking care of survivors in Poland in late 1945. When a nun appears at the clinic one night looking for help, Mathilde is brought to a convent where she discovers several Benedictine nuns who are about to give birth, after being assaulted

by Soviet soldiers.

From Academy Award® winning director Roger Ross Williams, Life, Animated is the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films.

Kate Plays Christine is the unbelievable story of Christine Chubbuck, a real-life news reporter who attempted suicide on live television in 1974, later dying of her wounds in hospital.

Foyle Film Festival’s family premiere is the new Disney animated feature Moana in 3D. Other family events include Rock Dog 3D and Paddington and Teddy Bears’ picnic.

We close proceedings with the Northern Ireland premiere of The Eagle Huntress – a spellbinding documentary that follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old nomadic girl in Mongolia who is fighting to become the first female eagle hunter in 12 generations of her Kazakh family.

The film captures her personal journey while also addressing universal themes like female empowerment, the natural world, coming of age and the onset of modernity.

The problem for Britain is that South Africa is about to introduce apartheid.

Its government sees an interracial relationship in its tiny neighbour as damaging and it threatens to withdraw the gold and uranium it supplies to poverty-stricken postwar Britain.

As a result, out of self-interest the British government forbids the marriage and, when that fails to deter the couple, it sanctions Seretse and Ruth Khama in every way it can. But the British establishment has underestimated the strength of their love, and their determination to be together against all the odds.

Featuring a mix of actuality, interviews and archive material, The Final Reel offers an entertaining overview of the history of cinema going in Norfolk and a snapshot of cinema going in England today. We will meet some of the colourful characters that are a key part of this history and hear how they kept the audiences coming back. It also asks the question – is this the final reel for the cinema or just another chapter in its ongoing story?

This is the story of Ruth Donnelly, a detective Garda who had a very bright career ahead of her until she had a one night stand with a colleague at Christmas while she was pregnant with her first child. Her guilt made her admit her indiscretion and as a consequence of the stress, she lost the baby. Her husband never got over the loss of his child and took his own life at their home, where she still lives. Having lost everything she loved, Ruth is still trying to seek out help but is coming to realise that there is only one course of action that may placate her conscience.

Luckily she escaped and found her way to the nurturing Odanadi organisation that housed her and supported her ambition to drive.

We first meet 18-year-old Selvi at a girls’ shelter in 2004 – timid, soft-spoken, a fresh runaway from a difficult life.

Over a ten-year journey, we see a remarkable transformation as Selvi finds her voice and defies all expectations – learning to drive, starting her own taxi company, leading seminars to educate other women, and much more.

This character-driven story highlights the challenges that millions of devalued women and girls in India face. Distributor: Dogwoof Actress Kate Lyn Sheil meticulously prepares to portray the role of Christine Chubbuck, a real-life news reporter who attempted suicide on live television in 1974, later dying of her wounds in hospital. Four decades on, no footage of the incident exists in the public domain, being that it happened a few years before the advent of VCRs. It’s almost an urban legend, making it particularly difficult for Sheil to immerse herself in the world of this mysterious woman.

And then the question arises of the actual value of trying to make drama out of this depressed victim of tragedy – the moral complications and issues of accountability and empathy that arise. Weaving between Sheil’s research processes, a retracing of Chubbuck’s known steps, and deliberately sterile, speculative re-enactments of events leading up to the suicide, the cumulative effect of Greene’s film is a thoroughly unsettling experience. It’s fascinating in its acknowledgement of the inability to know someone’s inner world, let alone convey it with any degree of supposed truth.

While he has taken leading roles in major studio films such as Platoon, Panic Room and Taken 3, the independent movie scene is where Forest Whitaker has truly made his mark. His enigmatic persona has brought depth and mystery to a range of character roles from the dreamy soldier Jody hiding a secret in The Crying Game, to the silent ninja-like assassin in Jim Jarmusch’s off-beat comedy Ghost Dog. John Maclean Director John Maclean made his short film debut with Man on a Motorcycle in 2009, followed by the BAFTA-winning Pitch Black Heist in 2011. His first feature film, Slow West, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015.

Tony Cranstoun Tony is an award-winning editor with an impressive body of work which includes feature films – I Give It A Year, Mr Bean’s Holiday, Love, Rosie, Death Of A Superhero and Perrier’s Bounty.

He won a BAFTA for The Royle Family, and was also nominated for Queer As Folk, and Clocking Off.

Jonathan Blagrove Jonathan was producer on the award-winning short drama Bro and the technically ambitious Woodwoo.

The Final Reel marks Jonathan’s feature length directorial debut.

Ciaran Creagh Ciaran Creagh is an award-winning screenwriter and director. In View is his first feature film which has already won first prize for screenplay at Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Ciáran McMenamin Actor Ciáran McMenamin is known for a diverse body of work. He won Best Supporting Actor at the 2013 British Independent Film Festival for Saving The Titanic. He has just completed his latest short film Delicate Things.

Conor McCaughan Conor is head of London-based talent agency, Troika and owner of DMC Film, which produced John Maclean’s Pitch Black Heist, and his debut feature Slow West.

Simon Doyle Simon is the creative producer of Fail Safe Films and has produced numerous award-winning short films. Fail Safe’s last short Love is A Sting (2015) won the 60th Cork Film Festival, putting it on the long-list for an Academy Award in 2017.

The film unpacks the case of CeCe McDonald, who survived an attack in Minneapolis in 2011 and was incarcerated for manslaughter. Ransacked is a film about the financial crisis in Iceland and how hedge funds who bet on the crash bought the failed banks for a few cents on the dollar. With an IQ of 149+, 12-year old Maximilian Janisch is Switzerland’s most famous highly gifted child. After passing the final secondary-school examinations in Mathematics at just nine years old, Maximilian has jumped forward three grades and is now attending Mathematical courses at University level.

The film follows Maximilian and his parents through their high-energy daily life and reflects on what it means to be a child prodigy.

Eugene Corr, a baseball coach’s son, spends five years on ball fields in inner city California and Cuba, following the lives of two extraordinary youth baseball coaches, Roscoe in Oakland and Nicolas in Havana. The coaches meet on videotape and two years of red tape later, Coach Roscoe and nine Oakland players travel to Havana to play Coach Nicolas’ team. Real friendships form during the trip but an incident back home brings back the inescapable reality and challenges of life in an American inner city.
