A “favorite” is preferred before all others of the same kind—a first choice, close to one’s heart. In Laguna Beach, we are so rich in Favorites that we created “The Original” Laguna Beach Favorites contest for people to vote on the places and people they love the most. In the 2025 Favorites Winners Edition, we list them all, representing thousands of votes in over 100 categories.
New to this year’s contest are winners for Favorite Spiritual Crystals/Metaphysical Shop, Consignment/Thrift/Vintage Store, and Pilates Studio. Several first-time nominees are new Favorites, and as a sign of the caffeinated times, the voters had to chose from over 20+ nominees for Favorite Coffee Spot!
As we do each year, we go behind the scenes for our Spotlight Conversation with a local Favorite. In this edition we are pleased to feature local celebrity actor Robert Englund, who has called Laguna home for decades. He shares with us his Favorites in life, love, his career, and Laguna Beach.

LEGENDARY ACTOR ROBERT ENGLUND WITH JEFF CONWAY
The best way to start this conversation is to simply state: Robert Englund loves Laguna Beach!
The man is recognized worldwide as a Hollywood star, and when our conversation began it was wonderfully obvious that his life and passions are perfectly tuned with the laid-back lifestyle of classic Laguna Beach.
LBFavorites: Thank you for joining us today to talk about your career, life, and your own favorite places and memories of this special beach town.
Robert: Of course, it’s nice to give you what I’ll call “historical perspective” on my lifelong crush on Laguna Beach.
LBFavorites: Let’s pull the curtain back a little on your career and your ability to connect with audiences in film,
television, and on stage.
Robert: I’m just an ol’ character actor that has survived over fifty years in Hollywood, and seven years before that in theatre all over America. I’m a utility actor, you know, ‘to thine own self be true’. At some point I had a hit science fiction show (V) and a horror movie that became a franchise (A Nightmare on Elm Street) back to back, and it made me “international”. That’s the happy accident, the lucky charm of my career. You can’t predict that. They don’t teach that in acting class. No one prepares you for it, not even your agent, but there’s this great thing that happens when people attach your name to your face.
that came down with my parents every summer. I do have vivid memories of, and this has to be late 50’s or very early 60’s, seeing Corky Carroll at Brooks Street (beach) on a hot sunny day with a little bit of a south swell, just doing all incredible noserides in the backwash of the shore break. Up close, right down there in the wet sand watching in my Jantzen clam diggers, clutching my St. Christopher medal and trying to look like one of the cool older Laguna boys. I just idolized the
guys at Brooks Street. Oh,
My stepsister and one that wanted to be an actress, I went off with her
between Danny Kaye and Harpo Marx back then, and I got all the lead roles. Once the first show opened, I had this incredible sense of power with the audience, getting my laughs, it’s like a rock star high...and that’s a real changing point in my life. The art, the creative impulse, talent, skill, and craftsmanship, rehearsal and all that, and practice. The door kind of opened and the spotlight hit me, and I couldn’t get enough of it.
LBFavorites: Congrats on receiving your Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Robert: It’s an incredible honor. I love that I’m being cemented into that kind of collective popular culture memory of the United States of America.
It’s been a great ride, and nobody says, “When I grow up I want to be a monster.” (Freddy Krueger). That’s not a

plan, it just happened. I realized at the time, that nobody was stepping into the Vincent Price roles. They asked me to do some of them and I said, “Sure, sign me up!”
LBFavorites: It looks like you’re having a great time doing interesting work.
Robert: My friend Mark Hamill told me a Mel Brooks line, “When you’re on the merry-go-round, don’t get off until it stops!”
LBFavorites: Favorite memories from Laguna Beach eras?
Robert: As a kid in the 50’s and early 60’s, nighttime Grunion runs with flashlights and blue hooded sweatshirts.
Picking up a cardboard box of split-weenie hot dog sandwiches on wheat toast and Delaware punch served with paper straws (for my family) from a stand on the boardwalk on Main Beach.
Staying for a month every summer for over a decade at my grandfather’s apartment, the middle unit of The Vista (535 Coast Highway).
Meeting up with my mom in the evening at Café Frankenstein (860 S. Coast Hwy) and peeking at the jazz musicians warming
up and the beatniks playing bongo drums.
Since we moved here in 1990, I miss the days of shopping at Gene’s Market (1080 Coast Hwy).
Paddling out at Agate watching James Pribram and other locals shred.
Current dining favorites include Cacio e Pepe at Alessa. Always perfectly al dente. Fishermans Chowder at 230 Forest, especially on an overcast winter’s day. Salmon Salad at Sapphire, mid-week, served at the bar. Hot Fish and Silk Road dumplings, steamed, at Starfish

We also really enjoy the Gate & Garden Tour: my wife ran it for a dozen years before becoming President of the Laguna Beach Garden Club. The walking tour showcases Laguna’s history and beauty.
