“Akansea” traces its origins to the Quapaw Indians, an indigenous tribe that inhabited the area west of the Mississippi River and north of the Red River. Specifically, in what is now known as Arkansas. This name, however, is not just a simple label for a place; it carries with it a legacy of cultural exchange and environmental stewardship, reflecting the tribe’s enduring perseverance.
The Quapaw, known in their language as the O-Gah-Pah, meaning “the people who live downstream,” were a group of people deeply connected to their environment. They were warriors when they needed to be warriors. Traders when they needed to trade. But most importantly, they were friends to all who came in peace.
By the mid-to-late 1600s, French explorers charting their path down the Mississippi was commonplace. It was on one of these many expeditions that two French adventurers, by the name of Jaque Marquet and Louise Joliet, would cross path with the “Illini” people – You can imagine where Illinois gets its name.
The Illini handed Marquet and Joliet a Calumet – a variation of a peace pipe – and warned them to be weary of the Akansea. The people of the Southwind, for they were fierce warriors and protectors of their lands. The Illini instructed Marquet and Joliet to hold the Calumet up above their head when they encounter the Akansea to alert them that you mean no harm. Marquet and Joliet left the Illini and continued on their track south.
Several days later, Marquette and Joliet would indeed encounter the Quapaw people and document their encounter in their journal in 1673. In this early account, the Quapaw began to cross a river to defend against what they believed to be foreign invaders. Marquet held up the

INDIAN PEACE MEDALS
Tall Chief had in his possession when he died in 1918 four peace medals. Three of these medals (Spanish Medal and two Thomas Jefferson medals) had been given to his ancestors that were hereditary chiefs (Full Blood Quapaw father to Full Blood Quapaw son). Tall Chief was given the George Washington medal around 1902 being recognized as the last hereditary chief of the Quapaw tribe. The Washington peace medal was struck in the twentieth century, more than a decade after the medals ceased to be designed specifically for the Indians, so as to complete the series of round medals that began with the Thomas Jefferson medal in 1801.

By the early 1700s, the name had morphed into various forms on maps and documents. The map produced by LaSalle, a French explorer, in the late 1600s, shows the name of the tribe spelled as “ACANSA.”
A few decades later, during La Harpe’s exploration from 1718 to 1722, the river was referred to as the “Arkansas,” and the tribe was called “LES AKANSAS.” This phonetic variation hints at the adaptability of the Quapaw name as it was passed through different languages and cultures.
The Quapaws’ resilience and their deep connection to the land played a significant role in how their name persisted. As explorers and settlers encountered the Quapaws, they were struck by the tribe’s generosity and perseverance. The Quapaws’ hospitality was legendary, and their ability to navigate the challenges of their environment served as a model for those who came into contact with them. They were, and still are, a people who understand the importance of building friendships and relationships both within their own community as well as those outside of their territory.
Despite the many changes to the spelling and pronunciation of the name, the Quapaws’ influence on the state of Arkansas and its people cannot be understated. The tribe’s traditions of
perseverance, environmental stewardship, and hospitality continue to be embodied in the state’s culture. The Quapaw are woven into the fabric of Arkansas, from its rivers to its forests, from its counties to its townships. Their story, the Quapaw, the O-Gah-Pah, the Akansea… lives on in the very name of this great state.
Today, we recognize the Akansea as an award dedicated to an individual that has shown great perseverance and goodwill. To an individual that has shown fortitude in his or her decisions and helped strengthen this state – this community.

My name is Betty Gaedtke, an enrolled member of the Quapaw Nation and former Quapaw Tribal Council Member. My Quapaw name is Te-Mi-Zhi-Ka (Little Buffalo Woman) after my great, great grandfather, Te-Zhi-Ka (Buffalo Calf). I come from a long line of pureblood Quapaw, and belong to the Buffalo clan. The Quapaw really thrived in East Arkansas. I still think of East Arkansas as our home.
It came to my attention years ago that pottery making, a huge part of our tribal culture, had disappeared. My goal was to resurrect that lost art and bring back that part of our culture. I learned how to make Quapaw and Mississippian pottery several years ago and am the only Quapaw Tribal Member producing it today. I use some of the methods and tools used hundreds of years ago and have made over 500 vessels in the styles and designs of my ancestors with many of them being displayed in museums in several states. I was instrumental in acquiring a pottery studio for our tribe on tribal grounds and teach tribal members how to make our pottery so that this part of our culture will continue on after I am gone. In the 1990s, when Wayne Newton — sometimes called “Mr. Las Vegas” — built a 3,000-seat theater perched above Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, audiences expected world-class music and big-city style. And they got exactly what they bargained for — performers like Michael Bolton, Kenny Loggins, The Oak Ridge Boys, Dennis Quaid, Kenny G, Johnny Mathis, Rhonda Vincent, Tony Orlando, Nelly and many more, on stage in an elegant space with a vast entryway and a grand staircase.
Over the last five years, Branson audiences have gotten even more than legacy promised. Now known as The Mansion Theatre for the Performing Arts, the venue has continued to deliver a star-studded lineup with legendary rock and classic country performers as the main menu, plus some of the best professional tribute bands in the world for added spice. Audiences love it so much that they’ve voted The
Mansion Theatre Best Concert Venue for the eighth year in a row in this year’s Best of Branson contest — and tribute rockers Bohemian Queen have earned the Best Limited Engagement Show title.
“We are thrilled,” says Kristy Adams, The Mansion’s general manager. “These awards speak to the character of our staff, both in front and behind the scenes, our management, our artists — and most of all, our patrons. We want to continue to always put our best foot forward, and this award proves we are doing just that.”
So does The Mansion’s 2026 lineup — a who’s who of Branson favorites that includes the Gatlin Brothers; Jimmy Fortune in September, October and November; Gene Watson during the same three months; Brothers of the Heart with Jimmy Fortune, Ben Isaacs, Bradley Walker and Mike Rogers in October; and the Bellamy Brothers in October and November.
“We’ve also added Faithful Journey, a Journey tribute, June 12; Zep-La, a Led Zeppelin tribute, June 13; and we’re bringing back Bohemian Queen July 18,” Adams says proudly.

From Broadway-style shows with all the lights and bells and whistles to heartwarming Christmas shows and half a dozen praise festivals a year, The Mansion offers entertainment for all ages. Arguably the biggest show on The Mansion’s stage this fall will be Darrell Worley, headlining Veterans Homecoming Week in Branson. He is best known for his post-9/11 song “Have You Forgotten?,” and will appear Nov. 7 at The Mansion Theatre.
Veterans always seem to make up a big part of The Mansion’s dayto-day audience, which starts in their 40s and goes all the way up to 80. “But it’s especially fun to see grandparents bring their grandchildren,” Adams says. “It’s part of that long, treasured tradition of bringing your family to Branson as a vacation and entertainment destination.”
There’s also a world behind the scenes at The Mansion Theatre that benefits audiences, even though they might not see it.
“We are the only facility in the area that also houses a live, top-ofthe-line recording studio on property,” Adams explains. “Mansion Sound features the ability to record in ATMOS on a 96-input SSL duality fuse console, and artists can enjoy a professional recording experience right here.”
The theater was part of a trend toward “bigger is better” in Branson in the 1990s, and now as The Mansion Theatre, it continues to expand on that philosophy.
“The historic theater was originally built for Wayne Newton,” Adams repeats, “which explains its grandness and elegance. It has always been a showplace for the region and over the years home to so many fantastic productions and entertainers. Now, we believe our lineup of legendary performers reaches out to a wide demographic with award-winning productions you can only see on our stage.
