Our customers deserve more. That’s why Southern Classic Chicken has never been just a business to us. It’s been a family. It’s been about serving classic food to classic customers who know good fried chicken when they see it, when they smell it, and especially when they taste it.
Then we kept cooking. Kept planning. Kept dreaming.
We opened what we felt was a kitchen that we called a restaurant, one with a pick-up window and a drive-thru lane.

A Lifetime of Support: James
Wilson's Journey with The Arc Caddo-Bossier
The following story chronicles the fictional journey of James Wilson and his family. While James is not a real person, his experiences reflect the authentic lives of hundreds of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families who have been supported by The Arc Caddo-Bossier throughout our community. His story represents the collective experiences, challenges, triumphs, and possibilities that define the real-life journeys of those we serve.
EARLY YEARS: BUILDING A FOUNDATION
Spring 2025: When Mrs. Wilson, seven months pregnant, learned that her child would have developmental disabilities, she and her husband didn't face the future alone. They immediately called The Arc Caddo-Bossier and started the essential paperwork process with the State of Louisiana that would connect their son to lifelong support services.
Summer 2025: The Wilson family welcomed baby James into the world. Having prepared in advance, they had already secured a spot on the waiting list for The Arc Caddo-Bossier's Goldman School and Child Development Centers, where James could begin receiving specialized care as early as eight weeks old.
THE GOLDMAN SCHOOL YEARS: EARLY INTERVENTION AND INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
Within his first few weeks at Goldman School, teachers identified that James wasn't meeting typical developmental milestones. This early recognition allowed him to seamlessly transition into the school's Early Steps program, where specialized therapists provided speech, physical, and occupational therapy right in the classroom setting. This innovative approach meant the Wilsons didn't need
to sacrifice work time for multiple therapy appointments—the therapeutic support was integrated into James's daily routine.
What made Goldman School truly special was its inclusive education model. James learned alongside typically developing children, creating an environment where children with disabilities could observe and aspire to new achievements, while their neurotypical peers developed empathy and understanding of human diversity. This inclusive approach became the foundation for James's social development and self-confidence.
For four transformative years, James thrived at The Arc Caddo-Bossier's Goldman School and Child Development Center, receiving the specialized attention and inclusive education that prepared him for elementary school.
TRANSITION TO ELEMENTARY: COMMUNITY LIVING SUPPORTS AND SERVICES
2029: As James graduated from Goldman School, The Arc's support didn't end—it evolved. Through the organization's Community Living Supports and Services (CLSS) program, James and his family received comprehensive planning assistance for his transition to a more independent phase of childhood.
The CLSS team helped the Wilsons navigate the Children's Choice waiver
system, securing funding for a Direct Support Professional from The Arc Caddo-Bossier. This professional provided crucial assistance with daily living skills, meal preparation, personal hygiene, and other essential activities. The waiver also enabled the family to renovate their bathroom to accommodate James's specific accessibility needs, making their home a more supportive environment.
RESPITE CARE: SUPPORTING THE WHOLE FAMILY
Fall 2035: When James was 10 years old, his grandmother in another state passed away suddenly. Faced with funeral arrangements and family obligations, the Wilsons wondered how they could manage their responsibilities while ensuring James received proper care.
The Arc Caddo-Bossier's respite center provided the perfect solution. Through James's existing waiver, he could stay at the facility for several days each year. The professional staff administered his medications, prepared his favorite meals, and most importantly, ensured his time away from family was comfortable and engaging. This respite program, available to individuals with disabilities starting at age 6, demonstrated how The Arc supports not just individuals with disabilities, but their entire family network.
GREAT EQUINE ASSISTED SERVICES: BUILDING CONFIDENCE
2036: At age 11, James was introduced to another transformative program from The Arc Caddo-Bossier: GREAT Equine Assisted Services. At this specialized horse stables, trained professionals use equine services to enhance the physical, cognitive, and social well-being of riders with disabilities.
Despite his parents’ initial concerns, James gradually built the confidence and skills needed to ride independently. This marked the beginning of a lasting passion—from that day forward, James eagerly anticipated GREAT’s Camp Victory Summer Camp, where he could continue developing his riding skills while building friendships with other participants.
ADOLESCENT YEARS: COMMUNITY INTEGRATION
2039: At 14, James entered a new phase of independence. While The Arc Caddo-Bossier’s Direct Support Professionals continued working with his family, James enjoyed community activities that provided James with real-world experiences and opportunities to contribute through community service, while continuing to develop essential life skills under professional guidance.
ADULTHOOD: COMPREHENSIVE ADULT SERVICES
2046: At 20, James graduated high school and aged out of the Children’s Choice waiver program. However, The Arc Caddo-Bossier’s CLSS team was prepared with comprehensive adult services tailored to his specific needs and aspirations.
INDEPENDENT LIVING: GROUP HOME PROGRAM
Ready to experience life beyond his family home, James applied for The Arc CaddoBossier’s residential services. The organization operates eight group homes, each housing approximately 8 residents with 24/7 staffing support. James moved into a shared living arrangement where he could experience independence while having professional support readily available for any needs that arose.
EMPLOYMENT: FROST INDUSTRIES
Eager to gain work experience, James explored The Arc Caddo-Bossier’s Frost Industries employment program. Frost employs individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across multiple sectors including commercial linen services, janitorial work, lawn maintenance, mail processing, and packaging operations.
James found his niche in the linen services. Through Frost Industries, he earned his own income, received employment benefits, and discovered a new community of coworkers.
RECREATION AND COMMUNITY: CONLY DAY PROGRAM
After work, James and many of his housemates would visit the Conly Day Program, conveniently located next to Frost Industries. This comprehensive day program offered diverse recreational and educational opportunities including:
• Computer lab with adaptive technology
• Billiards and other recreational games
• Regular movie screenings
• Painting, ceramics and drawing activities
• Community cafeteria for social meals
• Educational workshops and skill-building sessions
• Exercise
The day program became James’s primary source of recreation and continued learning, providing structure for his non-work hours while fostering social connections.
ENHANCED INDEPENDENCE: APARTMENT LIVING
As James matured and demonstrated increased independence, he applied for The Arc Caddo-Bossier’s Affordable Housing. The organization operates two apartment complexes specifically designed for individuals with disabilities who are ready for greater autonomy while still benefiting from support services.
In his own apartment, James experienced independence while maintaining access to Direct Support Professionals who ensured his continued well-being. The Arc continued providing transportation to and from Frost Industries, maintaining the employment stability that had become central to his identity.
A LIFE OF SUPPORTED INDEPENDENCE
Throughout his journey from infancy to adulthood, James Wilson’s story illustrates the comprehensive, person-centered approach that defines The Arc Caddo-Bossier’s mission. Rather than simply providing services, the organization created a continuum of support that evolved with James’s changing needs and growing capabilities.
From early intervention and inclusive education through residential services, employment training, and community integration, The Arc Caddo-Bossier demonstrated how individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live fulfilling, independent lives when provided with appropriate, individualized support.
His journey exemplifies the possibility and promise that exists when comprehensive support services recognize the inherent dignity, potential, and right to self-determination of every individual with disabilities.
