The Invincible Marshal” by Bryan Alexis is a largescale public mural located in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas. The work honors Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, a legendary figure of the Old West. You can view it at the Belle Starr Antiques & Vintage Market at 410 N B Street.

Bryan Alexis is a muralist, designer, photographer, and educator based in Arkansas. He holds a B.A. in Graphic Design from Southern Arkansas University, an M.A. in Graphic Design from Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and an M.F.A. in Visual Design from the University of Arkansas.

Since joining the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith in 2006, he has taught graphic, web, motion, creative, and advertising design. Alexis first ventured into largescale murals in 2015 with the “Unexpected Project” in Fort Smith, which catalyzed his involvement in public art. To date, he has completed more than 30 murals across Arkansas and Oklahoma, some spanning thousands of square feet.

His work often engages history, place, and identity, bringing visibility to stories and figures whose significance might otherwise remain hidden.

Stepping Stone leads the way for kids with disabilities

Nash, who is now 6 years old, began his journey at Alma’s Stepping Stone School for Exceptional Children Inc. in 2022.

“He had just been diagnosed with nonverbal autism,” his parents remember. “He had no words or gestures. He rarely responded to his name or made eye contact.

“In the time he was there, he was blessed to have wonderful teachers and therapists who helped him learn and be the best he could be,” they continue. “He is now a kindergartner who will respond when spoken to and can communicate his wants and needs using words and gestures. We owe a lot of gratitude to those at Stepping Stone for their dedication in helping our baby learn and succeed.”

For the next age group, Stepping Stone’s Therapeutic Preschool is the only nonprofit, full-time school of its kind in the area. Students getting ready for public school are offered a full array of speech therapy, occupa-

“Eligibility may include developmental delays, failure to thrive, cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, autism, and medical conditions,” Ward says. “Individual care plans are developed by parents, teachers, therapists, and the child’s primary care physician. All of those experts are looking at developmental milestones to guide their treatment plan,” Ward says. “Six-month-olds should imitate speech. Nine-month-olds should be able to get to a sitting position. One-year-olds should say at least two words and walk alone. By 2 years old, children are combining words; by age 3, they can name family members; by 5, they can count five blocks and name four colors.”

Ryanne is 4 and has attended Stepping Stone for four years. Her family says “the strides she has been able to make would never have been possible without everyone at Stepping Stone.”

“Thanks to her therapists and nursing staff, she’s been able to excel at things some doctors said she never would,” they say. “The impact her nurses, past and present, have on her is incredible; the compassionate, loving support through her daily required

medical assistance. Everyone at Stepping Stone has instilled a confidence in Ryanne that is one of a kind.”

“We partner with school districts to ensure lifelong success for children through effectively transitioning children to kindergarten,” Ward adds.

“Stepping Stone’s services don’t stop for adults, either. Through the Cedar Ridge Intermediate Care Facility, Kevin, who is 56 years old, learned the skills he needed to have a job and an apartment with Stepping Stone’s help through CES Waiver Services. Stepping Stone,” Ward says, “has had a positive impact on Kevin — his independence, confidence and overall well-being.”

recognition and accreditation from CARF International for all its service components. The Arkansas Department of Education selected Stepping Stone to participate in the Pyramid Model Pilot, with emphasis on decreasing childhood behaviors.

Stepping Stone also continues a long partnership with Arkansas Children’s Hospital – Dennis Developmental Center as an outreach clinic for Northwest Arkansas.

This collaboration brings a team of physicians and social workers to Alma, quarterly, to assess and expedite medical and specialty referrals for children, Ward says.

Today, Stepping Stone provides services to around 275 children on a beautiful campus in Alma.

“These are children that deserve the same opportunities offered to all children,” Ward says. “Opportunities to dream, learn, laugh and play.”

“Learn” just might be the operative word, though. Stepping Stone leads successful results in Arkansas, with less than 1 percent of its clients requiring full-day special education as they transition to public school. That, Ward says, places Stepping Stone in the category of highest success nationwide.

Jobs+Plus works to meet the needs of adults 18 and older with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

The vocational division of Stepping Stone, Jobs+Plus offers job training and daily living skills to help these individuals become as independent as possible. This, in turn, builds clients’ selfesteem and allows them to make a positive contribution to their community.

Stepping Stone’s adult program, currently serving about 80 clients, also provides independent living opportunities, transportation and supportive living services, as well as a 24-hour medical intermediate care facility.

The story of the word

“Akansea” traces its origins to the Quapaw Indians, an indigenous tribe that inhabited the area west of the Mississippi River and north of the Red River. Specifically, in what is now known as Arkansas. This name, however, is not just a simple label for a place; it carries with it a legacy of cultural exchange and environmental stewardship, reflecting the tribe’s enduring perseverance.

The Quapaw, known in their language as the O-Gah-Pah, meaning “the people who live downstream,” were a group of people deeply connected to their environment. They were warriors when they needed to be warriors. Traders when they needed to trade. But most importantly, they were friends to all who came in peace.

By the mid-to-late 1600s, French explorers charting their path down the Mississippi was commonplace. It was on one of these many expeditions that two French adventurers, by the name of Jaque Marquet and Louise Joliet, would cross path with the “Illini” people – You can imagine where Illinois gets its name.

The Illini handed Marquet and Joliet a Calumet – a variation of a peace pipe – and warned them to be weary of the Akansea. The people of the Southwind, for they were fierce warriors and protectors of their lands. The Illini instructed Marquet and Joliet to hold the Calumet up above their head when they encounter the Akansea to alert them that you mean no harm. Marquet and Joliet left the Illini and continued on their track south.

Several days later, Marquette and Joliet would indeed encounter the Quapaw people and document their encounter in their journal in 1673. In this early account, the Quapaw began to cross a river to defend against what they believed to be foreign invaders. Marquet held up the

INDIAN PEACE MEDALS

Tall Chief had in his possession when he died in 1918 four peace medals. Three of these medals (Spanish Medal and two Thomas Jefferson medals) had been given to his ancestors that were hereditary chiefs (Full Blood Quapaw father to Full Blood Quapaw son). Tall Chief was given the George Washington medal around 1902 being recognized as the last hereditary chief of the Quapaw tribe. The Washington peace medal was struck in the twentieth century, more than a decade after the medals ceased to be designed specifically for the Indians, so as to complete the series of round medals that began with the Thomas Jefferson medal in 1801.

By the early 1700s, the name had morphed into various forms on maps and documents. The map produced by LaSalle, a French explorer, in the late 1600s, shows the name of the tribe spelled as “ACANSA.”

A few decades later, during La Harpe’s exploration from 1718 to 1722, the river was referred to as the “Arkansas,” and the tribe was called “LES AKANSAS.” This phonetic variation hints at the adaptability of the Quapaw name as it was passed through different languages and cultures.

The Quapaws’ resilience and their deep connection to the land played a significant role in how their name persisted. As explorers and settlers encountered the Quapaws, they were struck by the tribe’s generosity and perseverance. The Quapaws’ hospitality was legendary, and their ability to navigate the challenges of their environment served as a model for those who came into contact with them. They were, and still are, a people who understand the importance of building friendships and relationships both within their own community as well as those outside of their territory.

Despite the many changes to the spelling and pronunciation of the name, the Quapaws’ influence on the state of Arkansas and its people cannot be understated. The tribe’s traditions of

perseverance, environmental stewardship, and hospitality continue to be embodied in the state’s culture. The Quapaw are woven into the fabric of Arkansas, from its rivers to its forests, from its counties to its townships. Their story, the Quapaw, the O-Gah-Pah, the Akansea… lives on in the very name of this great state.

Today, we recognize the Akansea as an award dedicated to an individual that has shown great perseverance and goodwill. To an individual that has shown fortitude in his or her decisions and helped strengthen this state – this community.

My name is Betty Gaedtke, an enrolled member of the Quapaw Nation and former Quapaw Tribal Council Member. My Quapaw name is Te-Mi-Zhi-Ka (Little Buffalo Woman) after my great, great grandfather, Te-Zhi-Ka (Buffalo Calf). I come from a long line of pureblood Quapaw, and belong to the Buffalo clan. It came to my attention years ago that pottery making, a huge part of our tribal culture, had disappeared. My goal was to resurrect that lost art and bring back that part of our culture. I learned how to make Quapaw and Mississippian pottery several years ago and am the only Quapaw Tribal Member producing it today. I use some of the methods and tools used hundreds of years ago and have made over 500 vessels in the styles and designs of my ancestors with many of them being displayed in museums in several states. I was instrumental in acquiring a pottery studio for our tribe on tribal grounds and teach tribal members how to make our pottery so that this part of our culture will continue on after I am gone. “We are the only facility in the area and many parts of the country that also houses a live top-of the-line recording studio on property,” explained Kristy. “Mansion Sound features the ability to record in ATMOS on a 96-input SSL duality fuse console and artists can enjoy a professional recording experience right here.”

As a big name in the region’s arts and culture scene, The Mansion Theatre can get major Broadway shows to perform in its venue as they pass through town. Kristy said the shows are selected based on their popularity and how the theater’s operators think they will resonate with the local demographics. That means area fans of the theater get a curated selection of top performances.

The Mansion Theatre’s Praise Festivals are also a perennial favorite for locals. Kristy said, “We host a total of five festivals each year that cater to this audience and they are always packed out.”

The operators of this venue keep their support going for music and art around the country as well. Mansion Entertainment Group is the Grand Finale Sponsor Float in the 2025 Pasadena Rose Parade in California. Kristy recognizes the festival as a wonderful celebration of music and believes the company can support the music scene on the West Coast by being involved in the parade that occurs on New Year’s Day.
