Lexington knows State Farm agent Debra Hensley for her legendary service to her clients and her community. As a proud winner in this year’s Best of Lexington contest, Debra is using the spotlight to uplift a powerful local nonprofit: Black Yarn.
Born out of the nationwide racial reckoning in 2020, Black Yarn began as a grassroots effort to discover and acknowledge Lexington’s own history of housing discrimination. What started as deep, locally grounded research by two longtime Lexingtonians, Barbara Sutherland and Rona Roberts, soon grew into something much larger.
Today, Black Yarn is a nonprofit that uses research, storytelling, and community collaboration to challenge the myth that segregation caused little lasting harm in the city, and to point toward repair. Led by Kristen LaRue Bond, Black Yarn centers Black voices and histories too often left out of the American story.

For Black Yarn, community-wide acknowledgement of Lexington’s true history is necessary to work effectively to repair the Black-white home ownership gap. At present in the city, white families own their own homes at nearly twice the rate of Black families. This disparity drives a corresponding wealth gap between Black and white families that diminishes the economic potential of the entire local economy. These situations are not permanent. Hard, sustained, and collaborative community work can bring positive change. From mapping historic housing restrictions to producing additional documentaries and building an endowment for Black-led work, Black Yarn aims for lasting change.

The group’s upcoming documentary, Resilience in the Redline, premieres on August 23, 2025, at the Lyric Theatre. The film brings together over 20 local residents, scholars, and leaders to talk honestly about Black strength and persistence in the face of redlining and systemic discrimination. It is more than a film –

This documentary and the work of the organization as a whole serves to “confront
the legacy of systematic racism through storytelling, research, and community collaboration,” as Kristen puts it. Black Yarn was created to “weave those missing threads back into the America story and ensure Black voices, memory, and truth are centered in the process of repair.”
Looking forward, some immediate goals the Black Yarn team are pursuing include a historic mapping project with designs to “complete restrictive covenant mapping and collaborate with city leaders to inform housing policy,” and to “launch the Podcast Produce Black Yarn..to spotlight local stories and national conversations.”
As Black Yarn often says, “Our story is your story too.” This work benefits all of Lexington because true justice requires all residents working together. Black Yarn invites and encourages people of all backgrounds to join in the conversations and initiatives of the organization to foster inclusivity and

Such change has occurred through Debra’s contributions to the launching of the Hope Center as well as bringing about the existence of RadioLex, a nonprofit she founded. Once a month, the mother-daughter duo, Paige and Amy Paxton, open the doors of their storefront, Paxton Home, to interior design enthusiasts and interested buyers. While Paige handles the marketing, merchandising, and branding, her mother, Amy, sources the furniture and home decor with all the fervor that comes from studying interior design abroad. A truly family endeavor, the store is not just run by a mother-daughter duo, but the whole family helps during these events.
Every piece of furniture and home decor is hand selected by Amy and every product is refreshed by the next event. If furniture does not sell out day of, it is sold the next week.
Paxton Home sells affordable, luxury pieces that are available to take home immediately and can be shipped long distances if necessary. The store’s first come, first served basis levels the playing field and makes the buying process equitable for all interested customers. Though shopping for furniture must be in person, there is an online rug store that displays the many transfixing and one-of-a-kind rugs.
More recently, Paxton Home has pushed into the market of custom upholstery. Customers are invited to choose a fabric for their chosen piece of furniture and in four to six weeks, including production and shipping time, the piece will arrive. With over 1000 fabrics and frames to choose from, customers are sure to find a pattern that suits their specific design vision.
