We are in the land title insurance business. We work to ensure people buy their homes with peace of mind, reduce their risks, and help protect their property rights. Since 1905, Title Financial Corporation has been a family-owned company that began in Blackfoot, Idaho, and spreads across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. In October 2022, our new subsidiary brand, Flying S Title & Escrow, was formed. “Why Flying S?” Flying S stems from a cattle brand that the company founder’s son, Dwain H. Stufflebeam, and his wife Joyce created years ago and have since used in their ranching operations in Southeast Idaho. The “S” signifies the family name, Stufflebeam, and the “wings” on each side represent Dwain’s love for flying. This new brand reflects ranchers’ and farmers’ “whatever it takes” attitude. It is this same attitude that the company wants to reflect in its culture. Learn more about Flying S Title & Escrow by visiting FSTE.COM.

IDAHO’S BUSINESS LANDSCAPE:

From Potatoes to High-Tech

I

n the year 1998, on the sunny shores of Menlo Park, California, two bright minds embarked on a journey that would change the world forever. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, still in the throes of their Ph.D. studies at Stanford University, decided to incorporate a small start-up called Google. Little did they know that this humble beginning would lead to the tech giant we know today .

commodities, the state ranks among the top agricultural powerhouses in the nation. In fact, Idaho is the third-largest agricultural state in the West, showcasing its deep-rooted connection to farming and ranching traditions.

But while Google was taking its first steps, another significant event was unfolding in the business world. It was the year that the Idaho Statesman dedicated time to honor and celebrate Idaho’s top 100 privately held businesses. This event marked a pivotal moment in the state’s vibrant business history. Idaho’s business story, however, began long before 1998. It traces its roots back to 1809 when the British operated a fur trading post known as Kullyspell House by Lake Pend Oreille. This establishment, the first in what would later become the 43rd state, marked the beginning of a thriving business ecosystem. Fast forward to 1864, and the Idaho Statesman began tri-weekly publishing in Boise, documenting the region’s economic and social evolution. Today, Idaho’s business landscape is a testament to its diversity and resilience. While the state is renowned for its potato production, its business sectors extend far beyond agriculture. From agribusiness and automotive sales to banking, healthcare, technology, and more, Idaho boasts a wide range of industries that contribute to its economic vibrancy. Agriculture, in particular, holds a special place in Idaho’s heart. With nearly 25,000 farms and ranches producing over 185 different

One remarkable success story that exemplifies Idaho’s growth and innovation is Micron. The journey of this semiconductor design company began in 1978 in the basement of a dental office in Boise. By 1980, Micron had broken ground on its first fabrication plant, setting the stage for groundbreaking developments. In just a few years, the company introduced the world’s smallest 256K DRAM, propelling itself into industry leadership. Today, Micron stands as a global technology giant, a testament to Idaho’s potential for innovation. Another prominent player on Idaho’s business stage is KPMG, a global professional services firm offering a wide range of services, including audit, tax, advisory, and consulting. Their multi-disciplinary approach and deep industry knowledge have made them one of the “Big Four” accounting firms worldwide. KPMG’s presence in Idaho reflects the state’s growing importance on the international business map. Idaho Trust Bank, founded in 1994 by the Prohaska brothers, Daniel and Thomas,

businesses represents over $55 billion in annual revenue, showcasing the state’s economic strength and resilience. Of these honorees, 61 are based in the Boise/Meridian area, while 39 are spread across Idaho, illustrating the geographic diversity of business success in the state.

In the realm of legal services, Holland & Hart stands tall. This law firm, with its extensive expertise, serves clients of all sizes, from emerging businesses to large corporations. Their comprehensive legal offerings cover areas such as corporate law, litigation, and intellectual property. Moreover, Holland & Hart’s commitment to community service and pro bono work reflects the values of Idaho’s business community, which places great importance on giving back.

These rankings are based on annual gross income, a testament to the growth and prosperity of Idaho’s businesses. This year, KPMG, LLP compiled the survey results, further highlighting its significance in Idaho’s business ecosystem.

Gabe Hamilton, the administrative partner of Holland & Hart’s Boise office, emphasizes their commitment to community involvement. The firm’s attorneys dedicate their time to pro bono legal services and civic contributions, supporting various organizations focused on arts, education, health, human rights, and more. The Holland & Hart Foundation, celebrating its 25th anniversary, exemplifies their dedication to community building. In 2023, Idaho’s business landscape continues to flourish. Idaho’s business journey has evolved significantly since the days of fur trading posts and tri-weekly newspapers. Today, it is a state defined by diversity, innovation, and a strong sense of community. With Micron’s global impact, KPMG’s international, Idaho Trust Bank’s personalized service, Holland & Hart’s legal expertise, and the success of countless others, Idaho’s business landscape continues to thrive and inspire. The state’s history and future are intricately intertwined with the stories of these businesses, reflecting the resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit that define Idaho’s business community.

Personalized Banking for Tomorrow’s Idaho We’re here to help you navigate your financial future. Idaho Trust Bank: A Legacy of Personalized Banking for Nearly 30 Years Idaho Trust Bank, easily recognized among the state’s banking landscape, is approaching its 30th anniversary with Thomas Prohaska, co-founder and CEO, at the helm. Founded in 1994, Prohaska and his co-founder, brother Daniel Prohaska, envisioned a financial institution that placed relationships at the forefront of its mission in a way that was unique in the industry. Frustrated by the impersonal service they experienced at larger institutions, they envisioned a bank that felt more like a community—a place where clients are greeted by name, where every call connects with a dedicated expert, and crucially, where decisions are made right here in Idaho. Distinguishing itself from the crowd, Idaho Trust Bank epitomizes relationship-based banking. The bank’s size, while big enough to handle complex business concerns, is also intimate enough to cater to the needs of the average Idahoan. “Our offerings span from daily banking essentials like checking and savings accounts, loans, and credit cards to more specialized areas like wealth management*, investment strategies*, trust administration, and business succession services,” said Thomas Prohaska. “Our approach is always tailored to the specific requirements of our clients, which helps ensure a seamless banking experience.” With a client-centric approach, Idaho Trust Bank offers convenience and accessibility and a wide range of tailored solutions. Clients can do their banking in person, online, or through mobile devices. The bank’s staff continuously expands the bank’s offerings to align with evolving customer needs. By updating its knowledge and staying abreast of changing trends, the staff offers its customers great technology along with excellent customer service. Staff members attend conferences, workshops, and classes to ensure their advice and solutions remain relevant and effective.

A Solution to Lost “100-Year Banks” The disappearance of Idaho’s “100-year banks” in the early ‘90s through acquisitions by larger, out-of-state mega-banks has left a void in personalized, localized service and created frustration among clients who valued those qualities. Setting itself apart from this trend, Idaho Trust Bank fosters a strong sense of community by taking the interests of its customers to heart and ensuring client commitment. Geographic Presence Beyond its Boise branch, Idaho Trust Bank maintains a branch in Coeur d’Alene and has a trust office in Las Vegas, Nevada. This physical presence underscores the bank’s commitment to serving local communities and making client-focused decisions every step along the way. “The bank’s primary mission is to help clients create and preserve wealth for generations,” said Prohaska. “This is accomplished by our commitment to core values such as relationship-driven service, personal integrity, continued community commitment, talented teams working together, and financial expertise. Every solution we offer is meticulously tailored to resonate with our client’s unique requirements.” Looking ahead, Idaho Trust Bank is committed to evolving. Its growth strategy includes expanding digital offerings and introducing new products and services, all driven by the growing needs of its clients. The bank’s dedication to meeting the challenges of the future, together with its clients, remains unwavering. As it approaches its 30th year, Idaho Trust Bank remains steadfast in its commitment to the Prohaska brothers’ vision and stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community-based, personalized banking. Keeping that in mind, Idaho Trust Bank is dedicated to enhancing client relationships, maintaining local decision-making, and continuing to adapt. The bank appears poised to thrive in the ever-evolving financial landscape.

Track your performance so you know how to get better and improve. Corey Barton, CBH Homes lieving in growth and change. Without your team on board, you’ll be left behind.

What traits are important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company? Corey Barton

President, CBH Homes

Hungry and driven. We want people who want to do more and be more. They have to possess hunger and fire to push us to the next level.

What tips do you have, or what lessons have you learned, that would help others working to advance their careers? Keep a scoreboard. In order to know how you’re doing you must track and keep score. Look at your numbers. What habits and actions push you to your goal? Find how to track those, then be consistent, daily, weekly, and monthly writing down how you did. Set time weekly and monthly to review your scoreboard. How did you do? Did you do what you said you were going to do? Track your performance so you know how to get better and improve.

What does your business do to ensure it retains relevance and sustainability long into the future? Challenge the old ways. At CBH Homes, we’re constantly reviewing, adjusting, adapting and looking at how we do things so we can stay relevant. Whether it’s products, processes, or technologies we want to be on the forefront to try and test new things. We study industry leaders to see what we can learn and take to our own industry. What traits are most important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company? We are fortunate to run a mission-driven company at Lovevery. The ideal candidates are the ones who are excited about our mission to serve families and passionate about innovating in child development.

What is your company doing with the following in mind: Global Warming, Renewable Energy, Zero Waste? At Lovevery, we are committed to offsetting our environmental impact to improve climate outcomes for future generations. The first step is to create products that are built to last. We want to ensure everything we make at Lovevery has the longest life possible—so it can be passed on to another family or made complete again. We thoroughly test our products to make sure they can stand up to lots of play, and when that one piece inevitably gets lost, we replace it. team; to their word, their work, and each other.

What business advice do you have for those aspiring to become a Chief Executive Officer of a successful company?

Dynamic. People who drive progress and take initiative. Who harness the diverse strengths of the team to meet project, customer, and market demands of tomorrow.

It has taken some hard lessons to realize that surrounding yourself with strong leadership is a much wiser choice than believing that you must have all the answers for your team. Build a team around you with trust, accountability and vison, no matter what level you are playing within your organization.

Dependable. People who deliver on their promises, are resilient when challenged, persistent in their delivery, and always reliable.

What tips do you have, or what lessons have you learned, that would help others working to advance their careers? Start with Your Strengths Adopt a 10-10-10 rule to create your strategic development roadmap Study your top 10 talents (I use the CliftonStrengths Assessment) Gain clarity on what you do better than 10,000 other people Get to work toward 10,000 hours of practice to gain mastery Aim those strengths at a company need and that is where career advancement takes off. What tips do you have, or what lessons have you learned, that would help others working to advance their careers? In business, there are two kinds of people. People that show up and people that show off. The people that show up are the people who grow in their careers. People that show up take complete ownership of their tasks and seek to go above and beyond what is required, despite the constraints or challenges they face. They work to inspire people and help bring about desired results. By “showing up” in your role, you will naturally become the ideal candidate for growth and opportunity within your field.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have experienced in the current business climate and how have you best managed through it? As Idaho’s population continues to grow, what suggestions do you have to help maintain all that makes Idaho special? Ultimately, people is what makes Idaho special. The connection and compassion that exists among those people is key. We need to build tools, create platforms, and put on events that help integrate influx of people and make them feel welcome in the growing Idaho community. By doing so, we will continue to maintain what makes Idaho special and transform it into a place where even more people want to be.

Just a couple thoughts are that Idaho must focus on its infrastructure, transportation, including public transit, and maintain and protect its open spaces. We as a population must respect and take care of those shared spaces, so they continue to have value into the future. Most importantly be patient, kind and respectful with each other.

What traits are most important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company? Besides understanding the job, and why we do what we do, the most successful team members that I’ve worked with tend to create relationships, understand the needs of others they work with and for, and show that they share those concerns and will do what it takes to take care of them.

I am an Idaho native and have always enjoyed the kindness that the people of Idaho show to others. To maintain that kindness, I believe we need to be willing to have more civil conversations where there is disagreement. We are seeing people become so polarized and defensive as to not be able to see anything good about a person on the other side. What does your business do to ensure it retains relevance and sustainability long into the future? We’re currently making big investments in our software to continue to improve the customer experience. In our instant gratification world, I believe the independent rental operators in the country who remain relevant will be the companies who harness technology for customer convenience.

All decisions should be based on what is best for the company not what is best for you or oth-

I read articles from the Harvard Business Review, and when it comes to business books, I find that many sports books offer similar, valuable lessons. Books like “The Boys in the Boat” or “Leading with the Heart” resonate with me because all successful businesses share a lot in common with good teams.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have experienced in the current business climate and how have you best managed through it?

Dominic Scotti

CEO, Mokelumne River Forest Products

What traits are most important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company? An individual successfully dealing with adversity is becoming less and less common. Mistakes are made and issues are inevitable, even if they are out of your control. How an individual can respond when thrown into a lessthan-ideal situation will always stand out. Learning from mistakes while fixing those that arise is extremely important to us.

One of the biggest challenges for our industry in the current business climate has been supply chain disruptions. Delays in nearly every step of the process have grown exponentially and tasked us with producing new and unique case-by-case solutions. Our team has been determined and inventive throughout this process, ensuring we thrive and guarantee customer satisfaction and on-time deliveries.

What does your business do to ensure it retains relevance and sustainability long into the future? We take great pride in putting our customers first since our inception in 1988. We take our business integrity very seriously, as we represent our company and our family. Now, in our

third generation of the family-owned business, our unique business model has proven to compete and succeed in the industry while also producing low overhead and a lack of red tape. As far as sustainability, we ensure that we work with lumber producers who have practices in place to regenerate our forests and keep our climate healthy.

What tips do you have, or what lessons have you learned, that would help others working to advance their careers? Saying yes to new opportunities, including lateral moves, within your current company has been helpful to advance careers. Staying positive, being open to relocation, putting others before yourself, and maintaining a learning mindset are all other lessons learned along the way.

What traits are most important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company? It is important for individuals to do a great job in their current role. Having a desire to improve, being open to

Know yourself, your organization, and never stop learning. We live in an amazing age that presents us with many opportunities. Never stop asking questions, but know when to ask such questions. Search out individuals and other areas to learn how and where you may hone your skills as not just as an employee, but a crucial member of a vibrant organization. Also, remember that perfection can be the enemy of progress. Nothing is ever perfect, but keep moving forward! Desire for the success of others. One of the crucial abilities of any leader is to first have a very good grasp of the organization’s aspirations, but also how to support those that are reporting or following that leader’s direction. Be passionate about others and their success, while understanding and appreciating the core of the organization’s success factors as well.

Open to feedback and coaching, and showing self-awareness are all traits considered when hiring or promoting. Michael Snow, Interstate Group, LLC

What traits are most important to you when hiring for, or promoting individuals within, your company? Skills can be learned, but individuals have unique talents and attributes that are more innate. I’ve always remembered what Steven Covey said, ‘first seek to understand, then be understood’. A company must first understand what traits are important to the organization when either hiring or promoting. Beyond that, as the Cheshire Cat said when asked by Alice, which way she should go, he replied “If you don’t know where you are going, it doesn’t matter much which way you go.” Give people the best opportunity for success by stating not only what traits are most important, but also acknowledge the unknowns in any given situation as well. When you paint a more complete picture of the situation for a person (the good, the bad, and the ugly), that provides an opportunity for individuals to rise to the challenge.

As Idaho’s population continues to grow, what suggestions do you have to help maintain all that makes Idaho special? Celebrating our heritage is very important. It helps us understand how we fit into our current circumstances and how we got to this point. It gives us a reference point for where we are today, and helps with creating a realistic vision for the future. However, holding onto the core and not becoming something else is always elusive. Idaho was established as a state in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln and the State motto is “Estos Perpetua” or “May it endure forever”. The Mountain Blue Bird and the Syringa flower were established as symbols 48 | IDAHO 100

in 1931, and the Peregrine Falcon in 2004. Idaho has tremendous natural resources. An ever-increasing population is also a resource. As Idaho’s population continues to grow, people that appreciate what makes Idaho special will be more and more important as they live out the values and the heritage that has brought us to where we are today.

Christopher P. Leichtweis CEO, North Wind Group

What does your business do to ensure it retains relevance and sustainability long into the future? North Wind invests in our employees. We have several training and talent development programs in place that are designed to support employees and provide opportunity for their professional and personal growth. Some of these programs include: North Wind Leadership Academy, Mentor/ Protégé program, North Wind University, Tuition reimbursement program and many more.

What business books do you recommend that everyone read? “Traction” by Gino Wickman. This book has been the key to success for North Wind. The core component of the program described in Traction is

the Entrepreneurial Operating System, known as EOS. EOS gave us the starting point to establish clear goals and the supporting framework to achieve those goals for North Wind’s growth. It got us all rowing in the same direction together to grow North Wind to what it is today.

What business advice do you have for those aspiring to become a Chief Executive Officer of a successful company? I am a passionate advocator for being transparent with your team. To drive a sustainable culture within an organization, every player among the team deserves to know what is going on, and everyone should know the vision and mission of the company. Being as transparent as possible, allows all team members to buy-in and feel a part of something real.

...it is important to have confidence in your vision and the humility to know that you are just one part of an organization Adam Husney, Healthwise
