e are excited to bring you our third edition of the Best of River Valley Awards Magazine. This year, the 2023 Best of River Valley contest had over 377,000 votes cast. This is a 382% increase year-over-year! We increased our categories up to 224 different options which resulted in 672 awards, plus 543 of those were presented to unique winners!
With our large contest area ranging from Sallisaw to Russellville, and from Mountainburg to Waldron, to be named in the top three in any category is an accomplishment. Our goal is to create economic lift and overall promotion of the River Valley, while engaging the community in celebrating the places, restaurants and local businesses that make our area unique. We highlight efforts to discover and celebrate the businesses, people and places we love most, as voted by our local community: You. Our news staff reports on stories in River Valley communities from Fort Smith to Clarksville, and everything in between. We understand that focusing on local news and events is what matters most to our readers. Our sports department covers River Valley prep sports from preseason to playoffs, with game stories, previews and features in our weekly Prep Rally – River Valley Report with Leland Barclay. In August, we also had our third annual River Valley Media Day event in Fort Smith at the River Valley Fellowship of Christian Athletes Office, which provided the opportunity to celebrate the River Valley’s top coaches and players, and to say thank you for their efforts. These videos and photos were added to our River Valley Report Football Preview which was distributed across the River Valley inside the River Valley Democrat-Gazette and in the digital replica app so that everyone could enjoy them. Additionally in August, the River Valley Democrat-Gazette was the presenting sponsor of the Fort Smith International Film Festival, our What’s Up! Arts & Entertainment Guide was the official program for the festival, and our Best of River Valley was the awards sponsor with our very own award given to local filmmakers for their submitted film. Improving Lives Through Pediatric Therapy Preparing children to live their best lives is where Little Hands at Play Therapy excels.
Because of Little Hands’ work over nearly eight years, children in and around the River Valley have been able to safely relax and learn functional skills through occupational, physical, speech, and feeding therapy that is centered around them. The highly trained staff of about a dozen therapists knows instinctually that children learn best through play, so they tailor programs to best fit their young needs.

Little Hands at Play understands that adults might receive therapy for just a short period of time before returning to work following recovery from surgery or injury. But it’s different for children. A child with a diagnosis of autism or cerebral palsy might need someone to help them learn how to function as independently as possible, which is the goal of LHAP – to provide children with independence. Little Hands at Play Therapy is family owned and operated and makes approximately 15,000 patient appointments annually. Occupational therapists at LHAP work with children in the areas of feeding/picky eating, sensory integration, school readiness, activities

of daily living, and IADLs, or instrumental activities of daily living. The Little Hands physical therapists focus on childrens’ gross-motor skills. They can help children with balance and coordination, their eye-hand coordination, gait training, and building core strength. They also work with the youngest patients in the areas of Torticollis (a condition in which a baby’s neck muscles contract, causing their head to tilt to one side), cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy. Speech therapists address childrens’ expressive and receptive language skills, pragmatics, articulation, fluency, and dyslexia as well as help them with oral motor skills and feeding issues. When a concern or delay is demonstrated in any of these areas, the team at LHAP works closely with the child and parent to devise a treatment plan that moves the child toward independence. The clinic is especially proud of its “Goal Crushers”

program, which wasn’t done in the area until LHAP launched it. Each time a child meets a therapy goal the child gets a certificate, which they proudly share with parents so they can celebrate their progress. The children are also given a shout out on the clinic’s Facebook page which is the equivalent to an A+ in school.
It’s a way to acknowledge the huge achievement a child has made, but it now is imitated throughout the area. Goal Crusher reinforces the need for parental involvement and shows children that working together with their families and LHAP can help them excel in their daily lives with just a “little” help.

A brighter future With over 51 years in continuous service, Stepping Stone has become more than just a school for special needs children; it has become a comprehensive service provider to people with developmental/ intellectual disabilities and their families in the greater Crawford County area. Every child can and does learn! Children at Stepping Stone School, are nurtured, taught and loved well by caring therapists and competent teachers. Parents and teachers work together to help these little ones face their unimaginable challenges with courage and determination. Many

also face the challenge of coming from financially disadvantaged homes. While this may limit their access to some of the big pay institutions, nothing limits their access to the school with the most effective program in Arkansas. Stepping Stone’s Therapeutic Preschool is the only nonprofit, full-time school of its kind in the area. They offer educational training, a full array of nursing services, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and behavior management, as well as family case management and training. Their Infant Care Program,
for ages 6 months to 2 years, serves at-risk infants due to premature birth or low-birth weight as well as those born with Down syndrome or other developmental disorders. This represents an opportunity to begin meeting the needs of children at the earliest possible time, thereby eliminating or significantly reducing their risk for later developmental difficulties. Today, Stepping Stone provides services to around 275 children on their beautiful Alma campus. These are children that deserve the same opportunities offered to all children. Opportunities to dream, learn, laugh and play. With 90% of brain development occurring in the first five years of life, early assessment and intervention is critical. Parents, educators and therapists certainly have their work cut out for them. Stepping Stone leads success results in the state of Arkansas. Research shows an average of 8% of children transitioning from similar programs in Arkansas require full-day special education classes. Last year, less than 1% of children who transitioned from Stepping Stone School required full-day special education classes in their public school. This low percentage places them in the top percentile of effectiveness in the entire nation. The staff at Stepping Stone recognizes the importance of their work and the role they play in the development of each student. As a result, they have completed over 900 hours of educational training during this school year alone – a phenomenal accomplishment given the Department of Human BESTOFRIVERVALLEY.COM
Services only requires each staff member to obtain 15 hours per year. To help their students thrive, Stepping Stone’s teachers and teacher aides are consistently expanding their knowledge on a variety of topics. During the past year, for instance, the early childhood developmental specialists and direct care support staff have been learning ways to make the transition between school and home easier for their students. “Professional development trainings allow me to expand my knowledge base in different areas,” said Kristina Yones, an Arkansas Better Chance teacher at Stepping Stone. “The more training I receive, the more knowledge and insight I gain. Developing new skills and learning the best practices according to the latest standards in education will help me become the best educator I can be.”

Jobs+Plus, the vocational division of Stepping Stone, works to meet the needs of adults, ages 18 and over, with developmental/ intellectual disabilities. They offer job training and daily living skills to help these individuals become as independent as possible. Stepping Stone’s adult program also provides independent living opportunities, transportation and supportive living services, as well as a 24-hour medical intermediate care facility.
