It is hard to believe that 2023 marks our fourth year exploring and discovering individuals and businesses that are the best at what they do in the Willamette Valley. From our first year celebrating on the steps of the Capitol to large events held at The Oregon Garden and this year at Eola Hill Wine Cellars’ Legacy Estate Vineyard, it has been quite a ride.

We collected over 309,000 votes this year, a 56% increase from 2022!

As Best of the Willamette Valley continues to grow, so does our talented team of local graphic artists, marketing coordinators, sales representatives, and operation specialists. We are proud to find so much local talent in our own community including

When Covid hit in 2020, things changed for Rick’s Custom Fencing & Decking. Like many businesses, they had no idea what to expect when lockdowns started and people were asked to stay home.

Quickly, it became clear that more people being at home meant more people working on their own backyard spaces, and business started to pick up on this trend. However, despite the 43 years of business across Salem, Portland, and Southern Washington, Rick’s personnel felt that this boom was just a lucky break for those in the home improvement industry.

“As soon as we were designated essential, we realized that a lot of other businesses and individuals were not going to have the same opportunities throughout this,” said Taylor Wick, marketing director for the company. “We said that this is the time to give back.”

So, a series of outreach projects began, giving way to what would eventually be titled the Rick’s Community Support Drive, which is now in its fourth year.

In June 2020, they kicked off their first Impact Drive in partnership with Impact NW to collect household items and products that families were struggling to get at the height of the pandemic. Their dedication to preventing homelessness has made this partnership last to its fourth year with their 2023 Drive just about to conclude.

Since that initial partnership in 2020, many new partnerships have come about in the form of donations or employee volunteer initiatives.

Rick’s now has over 26 nonprofit organizations that they support yearly and have contributed over 600 volunteer hours and nearly $200,000 in donations of materials and labor.

“The meaningful partnerships with these organizations and the support of our community and employees has turned this simple little Community Drive into an integral part of our company culture,” said Wick.

One of the most meaningful partnerships has been with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Like many organizations, Make-A-Wish and their Wish families had to pivot when the pandemic hit. Trips to Disneyland or celebrity meet and greets were no longer an option. Many families took that opportunity to wish for the gift of a beautiful at-home space to enjoy their time together.

One such build was for the benefit of five-year-old Tennyson. His simple wish was for a safe and covered outdoor space where he could watch his brother play. The build team transformed the family’s backyard by adding a covered deck complete with

electrical outlets so Tennyson’s equipment could remain safely covered from the elements. They also replaced the surrounding fence. Several of Rick’s team members that installed the fence had direct connections to Make-A-Wish and volunteered their time to give back.

“I know what it’s like to be in that position,” said Craig, an employee volunteer whose family had received support from Make-A-Wish. “If there’s anything I can do to make it better, I’ll be there.”

When asked what the most rewarding part of leading the Support Drive was, Taylor responded, “Everything.”

“It’s taken on a life of its own,” she said.

ho needs Erin and Dan Napier, the friendly stars of HGTV’s series “Home Town” to revitalize Monmouth and Independence? A handful of people in the two small Willamette Valley cities have taken charge of the revitalizing their communities and they’re doing a fine job on their own.

District 20 Representative Paul Evans donated $2 million of his federal pandemic-relief American Rescue Plan (ARPA) grant money and State Senator Deb Patterson gave $1 million of hers to support the restoration of the MI Trolley service because they believe it will make a difference in the communities.

“There used to be a railroad connecting the communities,” Sen. Patterson said. “The Monmouth Independence Railway operated on a 2.5 miles stretch between the two cities.” The privately owned line was billed at the shortest rail line in the world.

The new trolley runs every 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. On Sundays and holidays, they run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. To accomplish such frequency, the trolleys go straight up Monmouth Street in

The trolley has a storied history in the area, going back nearly a century until they were discontinued in 1918. Residents have long talked about bringing them back. Most everyone was delighted to learn the trolleys (buses, really) are back and they are maintained by the SalemKeizer Rapid Transit (Cherriot) and piloted by Cherriots drivers. All are ADA-accessible, accommodating wheelchairs, power chairs, scooters and walkers.

Hybrid gas-electric vehicles are used for the 250-to-300 miles of travel daily, and the vehicles can hold 14 seated passengers, plus one wheelchair passenger, or the folddown seat holds two more passengers if no wheelchair is in use. It is supposed to make 140 one-way trips per day. At various times of day, it is standing-room only on the glossy red vehicles.

The trolley service began in April with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with key players in attendance, including Monmouth Mayor Cecelia Koontz, Independence Mayor John McArdle, city councilors from both cities and Rep. Evans and Sen. Patterson.

One of the clever features of the free trolley is that there is a free downloadable mobile app that shows the trolley’s location in real time, so waiting passengers can find out how close it is to a stop.

“The fire-engine red trolley, with 24-hour notice, can even pick up disabled passengers from their homes, and it also has a bike rack. At dismissal time, we’re seeing lots of students from Central High and Talmadge Middle schools lined up as well as young people at the stops along the campus of Western Oregon University – they’re all lining up to take the free ride. Shoppers and restaurant-goers, too. It’s very encouraging,” Rep. Evans said.

“It’s making a difference,” said Sen. Patterson. “It’s not just students at WOU either. Faculty are taking it, too. And it’s not just a tourist

henever an Airstream vintage or contemporary trailer passes by, the easily recognized coach often provokes daydreaming. Who hasn’t longed to sleep in one of the rounded-corner, polishedaluminum beauties? Or make a meal in one of the tube’s cozy and tidy kitchenettes?

It’s not always easy, though, owning the granddaddy of them all, first built in the 1920s. They require care, storage (when not in use), and regular maintenance. So, Oregon park owners have created a couple of Airstream rental retreats that make happy campers out of any visitors who stay.

The Vintages Trailer Resort in Dayton, Oregon has 12 to 15 restored and fully heated and airconditioned Airstreams available for rent throughout the year in the heart of the Willamette Valley’s wine country. All offer the luxuries of a fine hotel and then some. There is a pool and several trailers with soaking tubs, but there are also fire pits, cruiser bikes at each rental, and 18-feet of space

between the tubular trailers to give clients plenty of room to spread out without having to rent a penthouse suite.

Glamping getaways here include access to a General Store stocked with artisanal goods and libations (including lots of local wine), a resort seasonal pool, a clubhouse, and the Fireside, a comfortable lounge setting for guests, 21 and older, to enjoy a fire-pit atmosphere – ideal for sharing Willamette Valley wine and stories with fellow travelers. A second Airstream hotel is nestled at the Oregon Coast in the town of Pacific City. The Kiwanda “Haystack Rock,” a large offshore basaltic, is in the surf directly across from the Hart’s Camp Airstream Hotel & RV Park.

The enormous rock is visible anywhere on the beach between Cape Lookout and the Cascade Headland and makes for perfect viewing during an after-meal stroll along the beach.

The property features eight Airstreams, ranging from a

couple of 1971 Airstream Land Yacht Sovereigns and the remainder 2015 to 2017 Flying Cloud Airstreams. Because the Airstreams are heated, they are used all year, and they book up quickly. Within a few steps to the beach, there is a brew pub (the Pelican Pub & Brewery) with a takeout window, a tasty pizza shop, and Stimulus

Coffee & Bakery, which is a nifty spot to grab a hot cup of joe, a giant slab of pastry and browse their bookstore as well.

Nearby are the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, Bob Straub State Park, and Whalen Island. These two glamping destinations make getting away in Oregon uber easy. California and Arizona each have some Airstream vacation rentals through a bed and breakfast website, but they are not in a park, and they are a bit remote. Oregon’s Airstream parks each offer a different environment (the coast or wine country), but they have one common bond: they let glampers surround themselves with likeminded neighbors and make a connection.
