Nerinx Hall Mission Founded in 1924, Nerinx Hall is an independent, Catholic, college-preparatory school for young women in the Loretto charism of loving service.

Get credit for it At Nerinx, students develop the skills and knowledge needed for success in college and beyond. They’re encouraged to challenge themselves with Honors courses, 13 AP classes, and over 30 college credit courses offered through Saint Louis University’s 1818 ACC Program and the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ ACP Program.

These opportunities not only feed students intellectually, but let them get a jump-start on their college core curriculum, freeing them to dive into their major courses sooner. Students have been known to earn a semester or even a full year of college credit before they step foot in their dorm.

Conversation as curriculum There’s power when the classroom is a catalyst for dialogue and conversation. Each student learns through respectfully listening to other ideas and perspectives, and, understanding how to effectively articulate her own thoughts and opinions in order to be better heard.

Every day is different Four classes, about 90 minutes in length, meet every other day and rotate. It allows for more independent study time and promotes learning freedom in a structured environment. Quarter, semester, and year-long courses are available, so students can always challenge themselves.

Nerinx taught me

Unique to Nerinx is daily “Contact Time” – an open opportunity to meet with teachers, do group work, hold club meetings, or catch up with a friend in the halls, classrooms, library, gazebo, courtyard, or a number of other spots. It’s another way to put into practice the self-promoted learning and time management skills they’ll need and use in college.

Sisters first Nerinx Advisories are another way students can connect with each other outside of the daily schedule. An Advisory consists of one teacher and 12 students (broken into three Families, each consisting of one girl per grade). Families provide an opportunity for girls to form friendships with students from other grades. Seniors and juniors serve as role models, and younger students benefit from the experiences of their older sisters.

Honors Program:

The House of Studies

Beginning fall 2019, the Nerinx Hall Honors Program, referred to as The House of Studies, will be a rigorous and challenging program of study for students seeking to reach their highest academic potential. The program will include Honors level and Advanced Placement classes along with unique opportunities and programming for enrichment outside of the school day. This fosters both classroom and self-directed learning.

Merit scholars will automatically be accepted into the program in fall 2019. Anyone else with a 3.8 GPA from the freshman class is invited to apply in January 2019 (post-semester 1 grades).

Student portfolios are kept and reviewed annually. During their senior year, Honors students will work with a mentor to complete an interdisciplinary capstone project with a Loretto component that is presented to the community.

Creative to our core On any given day, you can find a literature class relating a painting to their latest novel; a physics class studying the science behind a musical instrument’s workings; or a geometry class visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park to see firsthand how the parallelogram inspired the famed architect’s design. (It’s not your mother’s math class.)

The Aesthetic Education Program at Nerinx Hall, unique among high schools, offers students an interdisciplinary perspective on course content. It’s an exchange of ideas and expertise across disciplines that teaches students to integrate insights from all areas of knowledge. The program also fosters more creative problem solving using experiential learning, critical inquiry, and peer collaboration.

Feed your visual, theatrical, musical self To say our arts curriculum is expansive and vital is an understatement.

Freshmen choose a one-semester fine arts course – Art Fundamentals, Beginning Chorus, Introduction to Theatre, or Beginning Instrumental Ensemble. During their sophomore through senior years, students can further explore the arts through a multitude of electives.

There are countless opportunities for students to perform, create, and share original work – art shows, two musicals, a freshmen and sophomores-only play (aptly titled “Froshmore”), a spring play, multiple concerts, and so much more. Art shows are regularly held on campus and at local galleries. Student creativity through the arts is a Nerinx strength we’re proud to promote.

A Learning Specialist to power student potential

From textbooks to technology Our 1:1 MacBook laptop program expands the classroom, allowing both faculty and students to take active roles in the learning process. Families lease Apple laptops through the school, and Nerinx offers on-site tech support.

The Nerinx Hall Learning Specialist provides students with learning and study skills that promote success all four years.

Things like time management, organization, self-advocacy, and the like are tools that help them advance in everything they do, not just school. Our Learning Specialist works oneon-one with students and, when needed, coordinates with faculty regarding assignments and course requirements.

Nerinx Hall is fully committed to supporting students and ensuring they have full and equal access to our demanding educational environment. It’s why the Learning Specialist also offers support for students with learning and studying differences, and assists faculty in their efforts to provide reasonable accommodations and equal access to learning.

Nerinx has given me the knowledge to listen to everyone’s opinions and not judge people based on them.

A resource for writing Being articulate and clear in communicating ideas is another way Nerinx students power their individual voices. It’s an invaluable tool for them to hone now and for the future. Our Writing Coach serves as a resource on writing for the entire Nerinx Hall community. She works with students to provide feedback and instruction through individual appointments or small groups.

Some classes don’t have classrooms In the Loretto tradition of responsible leadership and an ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, Nerinx is proud to participate in ECO-ACT: an environmental leadership program for area juniors and seniors operated by the Missouri Botanical Garden.

It’s a unique opportunity for students to engage “ecology in action.”

Through investigation, education, and presentation, students learn to recognize and define St. Louis environmental issues. Using what they learn, they lead fourth grade students (from grade schools in Webster Groves and various Catholic schools) in projects aimed at directly addressing environmental issues affecting the St. Louis area.

In addition, Nerinx students can also work in our greenhouse located off the Biology lab, as well as the community garden that’s tended by both faculty and students and provides an opportunity to learn about sustainability and seasonal harvest.

Nerinx Hall is part of a proud history that began with three pioneer women – Mary Rhodes, Ann Havern, and Christina Stuart – who, in 1812, founded the Sisters of Loretto. The burgeoning community was nurtured by Father Charles Nerinckx, a missionary priest from Belgium, who helped them establish the order. In 1924, the Sisters named their new school Nerinx Hall as a tribute to his collaboration.

Loretto values: what connect us The Loretto tradition of education continues today with Lorettosponsored schools in Denver, El Paso, and St. Louis. Nerinx Hall shares with these schools a commitment to the Loretto values. Along with our philosophy and mission, these are the foundation of everything we do.

Enhancing spiritual growth Nerinx Hall embeds spirituality throughout different facets of student life. Monthly allschool Masses and prayer services are planned by students in cooperation with Campus Ministry. There are also opportunities for Eucharistic Adoration throughout the year, and Reconciliation is offered during Advent and Lent.

Retreats are a highly valued part of Nerinx’s Catholic faith and Loretto heritage because we understand that getting away can bring us together.

They’re a gift of time where we encourage each student to share with her class; reflect and grow; learn about prayer, community, and self; and seek God.

Building character through serving others A Loretto woman is known for her involvement in the world. Our Service Learning Program carries on the tradition of pioneering women seeking out areas of need and working for justice by promoting the dignity of others.

The Program’s mission is to offer our young women the opportunity to serve others in response to the Gospel call, and use their voice and skills toward the greater good. Students are required to complete a minimum number of service hours each year, culminating in 90 hours required for graduation. We offer 30 teams in 13 sports. Basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball all have dedicated freshman teams. Participation is guaranteed on our state championship cross country team as well as our track and field team.

Leadership. Character. Camaraderie. Memories. These are the attributes that contribute to the long and proud tradition that is Nerinx Hall athletics. And why is our mascot the “Marker?” Because Nerinx women make their mark on the world. (Empowerment runs deep.)

So, you’re going to be a freshman We asked our Class of ’18 what they would tell someone starting at Nerinx. Here are some of the highlights.

Try something new because freshmen have so many opportunities.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE. Get involved and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Be open, be present, and be involved.

Empowerment does not always mean being the first one to talk but being the one to understand and accept others while standing up for them.

Go outside of your circle of friends and talk to somebody new.

You are all women of worth, so treat each other as such.

Talk to everyone because they are probably super nice and want to talk to you.

Be accepting of others’ views and do not judge.

Stay close as a class because the girls that you are with now are with you for life.

Be brave and never be afraid to ask questions and be wrong.

Remember that you are all nervous about it being your first year, so be nice to one another.

Do not be afraid to be unapologetically you because when you get older, no one really cares how “cool” you were in high school.

Having a positive and open mindset will take you a long way.

As an investment in our students and in an effort to support families from diverse economic backgrounds, Nerinx Hall offers financial assistance in the forms of Merit Scholarships, Diversity Awards, and Need-Based Aid.

Diversity Awards

Nerinx Hall offers Merit Scholarships to incoming freshmen students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The value of the Merit Scholarship each eligible student receives is based upon her cumulative percentile score on a nationally normed standardized test (e.g., Iowa Test of Basic Skills – ITBS) taken during her eighth-grade year.

Nerinx Hall fully embraces the Loretto belief that diversity enriches. To encourage and support diversity in our student body, the Nerinx Hall Board of Directors created the Diversity Award. This is a monetary award that is renewable for four years. The amount of the award varies annually. The Diversity Award application and other required documents are due

by December 3, 2018. Qualifying students will be notified in their decision letter mailed on February 1, 2019.

Merit Scholarships are renewable for all four years of the recipient’s Nerinx Hall education if the student maintains a minimum 3.5 GPA, is active in the school community through service, leadership and extracurricular participation, and has good conduct. All first-choice applicants are automatically considered for a Nerinx Hall Merit Scholarship during the admissions process. Qualifying students will be notified in their decision letter mailed on February 1, 2019. All Merit Scholars will automatically be accepted into the Nerinx Hall Honors Program, The House of Studies.

Applicants without ITBS, ASPIRE, or other nationally normed standardized test scores (or who wish to improve their test scores) may register to take the nationally normed High School Placement Test (HSPT) at Nerinx Hall on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Testing will begin at 6 pm and conclude at 8:30 pm. The cost of the exam is $25, with check payable to Nerinx Hall. Advanced registration is required. Register for the HSPT via the Admissions Parent Portal.

Note: The HSPT at Nerinx is only open to applicants for scholarship consideration. It has no bearing on the admissions process.

Student Worker Program Students eligible for Need-Based Aid may be invited to participate in the Student Worker Program as space allows. The Student Worker Program allows students to work on the school’s campus and earn a tuition credit of $1,000 annually. The program schedules students to work after school for 40 minutes each school day at 3:15 or for 15 minutes each school day during their lunch period. A select number of participants may elect to complete the Student Worker Program over the summer, when participants work for 3.5 weeks, Monday-Friday.

Students invited to participate in the Student Worker Program during the school year or the summer option, will be notified by the Director of Finance.

Need-Based Aid During the 2018-2019 school year, 25% of Nerinx students received Need-Based Aid. Although Need-Based Aid varies, an average award is approximately $4,000 annually for families with demonstrated need.

Nerinx Hall partners with FACTS Grant & Aid (an independent, third-party company) to conduct financial analysis and determine a family’s financial need. Based on the information families provide in their FACTS application and supporting tax documents, Nerinx makes informed decisions about Need-Based Aid. Applicants using FACTS are subject to a one-time, non-refundable application fee of $30 per family payable to FACTS during the application process. The same application can be applied to multiple institutions provided those institutions use the FACTS Grant & Aid assessment services.

Beginning November 1, 2018, families may apply for Nerinx Hall Need-Based Aid via FACTS at factstuitionaid.com.

Class of 2023 (current 8th grade families) applications for Need-Based Aid must be submitted between November 1, 2018 – February 8, 2019 to be considered for Need-Based Aid. Please submit your application to factstuitionaid.com using the best estimate of your 2018 household income and expenses.

Nerinx Hall Need-Based Aid funds are limited. Awards are contingent upon FACTS verification of income and receipt of your 2018 tax return and W-2s by May 15, 2019.

Application checklist Create an account on the Nerinx Hall Admissions Parent Portal (opens Monday, October 1, 2018) • You’ll use the Nerinx Hall Admissions Parent Portal (nerinxhall.org/apply) throughout the admissions process. It provides a checklist of information needed to complete the application.

Complete the Catholic High School Application Form online at archstl.org/education (October 15-November 16, 2018) • St. Louis Catholic grade school students will receive an email from their principal with a link to the online form. • St. Louis Parish School of Religion (PSR) students will receive an email from their PSR Directors with a link to the online form. Applicants must indicate Nerinx Hall as Choice One on the application form.

• Students enrolled in private school, public school, home-school, or an Illinois Catholic school can request the St. Louis High School Application Form from the Nerinx Hall Admissions Office or via the Archdiocese of St. Louis Catholic Education Office website (archstl.org/education). Schedule a family interview (scheduling opens Monday, November 12, 2018) Applicants and their parents are interviewed by a Nerinx Hall faculty member during a 30-45 minute interview. Interviews will be held December 1-6 and December 8-9, 2018.
