FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Nerinx Hall Community, I know many of us are looking forward to saying goodbye to 2020. As a new year draws near, these last few weeks provide an opportunity to reflect on all of the challenges we faced, but also the successes enjoyed. We know the months ahead will continue to require creative solutions, teamwork, and flexibility. We have learned a lot from this unusual year and remain grateful for your support of Nerinx Hall, whether that be in time, talent, treasure, or prayers.

We are delighted to share some of the 2019-20 school year highlights with you through this magazine. Prior to and after March, our students and faculty continued to shine in a variety of areas. Our 2020-2025 Strategic Plan is also included in this issue. We thank those who took part in the planning process and those who will work tirelessly to ensure our goals come to fruition.

The Gratitude Report, which begins on page 28, includes gifts and financial information for our Fiscal Year 19-20 (July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020). We could not have made it through last spring or this first semester without your support, and we appreciate all those who made a gift to Nerinx last year.

During the 2019-20 school year, we provided 201 students with just over $1 million in scholarships, Diversity Awards, and need-based aid. This year those numbers have grown to more than 250 students and nearly $2 million, including $500,000 in emergency aid due to the job loss, furloughs, and loss of income that families experienced due to COVID-19. Your support helped make keeping these families at Nerinx possible, and we hope those in a position to help will do so again this year.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE

The Markers enjoyed two Final Four State finishes in 2019–20 in Field Hockey and Swimming. Brooke Punnewaert ‘22 was the Class 2 State Champion in the 200 Individual Medley, setting a Class 2 State Record. Lyndsey Heckel ‘20 and Mackenzie Duff ‘21 surpassed 1,000 career points during the basketball season. Despite the cancellation of the Track & Field season, Courtney Williams ‘20 was named Missouri’s Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

SERVICE TO OTHERS

The Class of 2020 completed their time at Nerinx with more than 17,000 hours spent answering the call to fulfill a deep human need. Lexi Hennes led the class with the most hours, and was recognized as the Archbishop May Service Award. The Service Program was overhauled for 2020-21 and is now the Social Impact Program. It focuses on four pillars: service learning, civic engagement, social justice, and social entrepreneurship.

Keaton Ibendahl was named valedictorian and Rachel Solverud salutatorian for the Class of 2020. Jane Whelan received the Father Nerinckx Award, the school’s highest honor. Student Government President Trudy Lane was the Julie Sheridan ‘67 Award winner.

Brett and Maggie Laughlin Honerkamp ‘95 (Isabel ‘21) chaired a successful Ball at the Hall Auction in February. The results of the soldout event provided much needed support for Student Scholarships and other areas. More than 700 supporters joined together to raise more than $100,000 during our Second Annual Founders Day of Giving Program.

OPERATIONS DURING COVID-19

On March 12, 2020, students met in-person for what would be the last time for the 2019-20 school year and celebrated with a Pi Day recitation contest and the annual quiz bowl. The remainder of the school year was held virtually. Faculty and staff held a parade for seniors on May 8 on what would have been their last day on campus as students.

The 2020-21 school year started with an in-person cohort model.

NerinxFest

Prior to the disruption due to COVID-19, our alumnae enjoyed a variety of opportunities to connect with classmates through Nerinx-sponsored events. A Friendsgiving event was held in November, Breakfast with Santa in December and Young Alum Mass and Luncheon in January. The Class of 1970 whose 50th reunion was postponed, rallied around the Class of 2020 in the spring, providing letters of inspiration and words of encouragement.

Doing the Work: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Nerinx

DOING THE WORK DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION AT NERINX

On June 4, 2020, we shared with the community our thoughts on the state of our country and our school. Excerpts from that statement appear below, along with ongoing and planned action items.

“We join our students and alumnae, the Sisters of Loretto, the Catholic Church and so many more in our outrage at the death of George Floyd. We have seen lives taken simply for the color of one’s skin too many times. Our students, families, and alumnae of color confront these inequities on a daily basis. As a predominately white institution, the majority of our students will never know the struggle of their classmates who have to wonder Am I Next? We ask our students to both use their voices, and to acknowledge when they should let the voices of others be amplified. As Americans, we are fighting two pandemics right now—one is COVID-19 and the other a disease that has afflicted our country for centuries. But one can’t be contained with masks or social distancing or prevented with a vaccine. Our voices and our actions are the only possible cure for the centuries-old pandemic of racism in America. As an institution with 10,000+ alumnae, students and supporters, we have an opportunity to contribute to that cure.

In working for change we must also hold a mirror up to examine our school community. We often cite the Loretto values of Faith, Community, Justice and Respect. Our philosophy tells us diversity enriches. Our Catholic social teachings and the Loretto charism call us to work for justice and act for peace. But the microaggressions and exclusion that impact people of color everyday happen in our school. These forms of racism are the foundation of the issues we are all appalled about right now. The jokes, the N word (even lip synced in a tiktok or otherwise), the expectation people of color should educate white people, the comparison of our own struggles to racism, the tokenization of our friends of color, not calling out racist comments—these issues are the catalyst. If we can’t rid ourselves of these instances of racism—from our minds and our homes—then we can’t really be shocked by the events in Minneapolis, or Louisville, or Brunswick, or countless other cities in America, including our own. We hear the demand for action.

We hear your voices raised in conversation and know it is needed. We thank those who have started and restarted dialogues with Nerinx administrators. We hear those who have said they have been let down, ignored and disappointed in the past. As we recruit what will be the 100th class of Markers this fall, we work to ensure the issues our students of color describe end in Nerinx’s first century. Only when we as a school support, engage and uplift all our students will we have fulfilled our Nerinx Hall mission."

WHAT’S HAPPENED AND WHAT’S NEXT?

• For 2020-21, we contracted with an outside expert for our Cultural Competency work, including student and staff

training. Boniface Foundation provided us with funding to begin this work. They also provided additional funding this school year to assist our families experiencing significant financial need. Families who would qualify for free or reduced lunches under federal guidelines received aid for school lunches, uniforms/spiritwear, and additional tuition assistance.

• As part of this program, we worked with the Diversity Awareness Partnership to conduct surveys in 2019-20 for

students, faculty, and staff to identify areas for growth. The common themes that developed from that survey were: 1. Increased need-based scholarships and Diversity Awards 2. Specialized training and education 3. Recruitment and retention plans for faculty, staff, and students

• A bias reporting form is now available to all students, faculty, and staff on the desktops of all Nerinx computers.

A contracted specialist who focuses on matters of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion receives the submissions.

• Administrators and Department Chairs began reviewing curriculum this summer with a focus on equity.

• In May 2020, the Board of Directors formed a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion subgroup led by Chriss Nick Hill '95.

The group will present recommendations to school leaders in December with the goal of Fall 2021 implementation.

• The 2020-2025 Strategic Plan affirms our desire to recruit students and staff from diverse populations. We are also

examining our relationships with outside vendors to ensure the companies we work with reflect the diversity of the region.

• The Strategic Plan also outlines a desire for alumnae support through mentorship, connection, and engagement.

A mentorship program and affinity group for BIPOC students and alumnae was established this fall.

• The Cultural Competency Survey revealed many students feel they miss out on opportunities due to financial

circumstances, so the Class of 2020 Experience Fund was created this spring. This fund will help all students fully experience Nerinx by assisting with fees for athletics, ACT Prep, dance tickets, Junior Rings, college applications, and more.

• The survey, and feedback from the Nerinx community, showed overwhelming support for increasing Diversity Awards and other need-based aid. Nerinx established the Diversity Award in the early 2000s for qualified incoming students to receive up to 1/2 tuition. These awards are now stackable with other need-based aid and Merit Scholarships. Ten students received Diversity Awards in 2020-21.

• The Alumnae Board, including the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, is assisting with many initiatives.

strategic plan

In September 2019, Nerinx Hall began the process of developing a new strategic plan to guide our work as we approach the school's centennial.

First, faculty and staff were surveyed on the current culture and priorities of the school. The leadership team looked critically at Nerinx and our competitors using a variety of inventory tools to better gage our current position and opportunities for the future.

More than 70 members of the community were invited to actively participate in the committee process. Ultimately, we had 35 individuals join us, including students, alumnae, current and former parents, board members, and staff members.

We conducted a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis and developed a working plan. We examined the SWOT results and determined ways to mitigate weaknesses and threats by highlighting opportunities and strengths. This helped shape our strategic initiatives. Small groups wrote action items for the areas of need. The plan was approved by the Board of Directors in March 2020. Five overarching priorities were developed through the planning process.

GOAL Expand and refine our college counseling program to promote college exploration and career preparedness beginning in a student’s freshman year.

Building a Legacy

atricia O'Neill Hohl '54 credits God and her friends for bringing her to Nerinx Hall. Pat, as she's always been known, actually started high school at Southwest High. It was "just okay," she said. But Pat knew there must be something more. On a friend's advice, she applied and later enrolled at Nerinx, joining the Class of 1954.

Pat immediately assimilated into life at Nerinx. "It was so different from my first year of high school. I loved the girls, the teachers, and the nuns. It was where I was supposed to be," she said. Pat enjoyed her three years at Nerinx immensely, calling them life-changing, and was involved in various activities, including Pep Club, Thespians, and Cheerleading.

Pat's yearbook entry notes she was a "Billiken fan," but there was one that stood out among the rest, Les Hohl, a graduate of both Saint Louis University High School and later Saint Louis University. "It sounds so funny to say now, but I actually used to, among other prayers of course, ask for God to send me a nice SLUH boy." The two were married in 1956 and will celebrate their 65th anniversary this summer.

Supporting their alma maters remains vital to Pat and Les. Both benefited from others' generosity to complete their respective high school careers and are committed to offering others the same experience.

In 2014, with a gift of nearly $250,000, Pat and Les created the Patricia and Lester Hohl Family Scholarship at Nerinx. It was designed to provide a life-changing experience just as Pat and Les enjoyed at their schools.

As a result of the gift, one student per four-year cycle receives a $10,000 annual scholarship, making Nerinx a possibility for one high-achieving student with demonstrated financial need. The first recipient graduated in 2019, with the second Hohl scholar currently in her sophomore year. "We want to ensure that a Nerinx Hall education is possible for all girls that meet the admission standard no matter a family's financial situation," said Pat. "I want other girls to have the opportunity I did."

The Class of 1954 yearbook begins with a dedication that reads, "The walls which have sheltered us through our precious high school days have harbored their last class. Though the spotlight is soon to shine on another building, our cherished memories of the old mansion will live forever. The white building, far back on campus, has sent forth many Nerinxites with fine Christian educations. Therefore in appreciation, we, the senior class, gratefully dedicate THE KEY to "old" Nerinx always first in our hearts - which now fades from the limelight making way for progress "new" Nerinx."

Pat's gift represents that link. There is not old and new; there is just Nerinx. We are grateful for alumnae from the past who make Nerinx a possibility for today's students.

Dr. Vicky Fraser ‘75 is the Adolphus Busch Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. Fraser attended medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and completed her residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where she was chief resident.

In August, Director of Alumnae Relations Liz Rooney Millikan ‘87 talked to Dr. Fraser about the ongoing pandemic and how Nerinx shaped her career.

Q: How did Nerinx inspire your career?

A: I had a great education at Nerinx. Granted, it was a long time ago, of course. Marcella Vogt Sweeney was my biology teacher. I was able to take four years of science and four years of math and I think that made a tremendous difference. We know now that more STEM, as much as possible, especially for women, is really important to help advance career opportunities. It makes a huge difference.

I was actually an English and biology major. I am very grateful for the tremendous English and writing and liberal arts-related education I got at Nerinx. In looking for medical school applicants, we are looking for people who care about people, who want to make a difference in the world, who are critical thinkers, and who communicate well. They obviously have to do well in the sciences, but we appreciate broad and diverse backgrounds.

Q: How did you become interested in infectious disease?

A: I did my residency at the University of Colorado. It was a great place to train. It was a highly academic and wonderful medical center with a lot of mentorship and a lot of role models. They had tremendous infectious disease doctors. I was fortunate enough to do a rotation in Haiti as a secondyear student and that was life-changing for me. I got to see malaria and typhoid and vaccinepreventable diseases you don't see in the United States. I became interested in public and global health and epidemiology and that is basically why I pursued this specialty.

Q: What advice would you give a high school student interested in medicine?

A: High school is a terrific time to start thinking about careers. It is never too soon to start thinking about what you might want to do: your passions, what you like, what you don’t like, and never too early to set a high bar. Don't exclude things. Don't think you're not good enough or smart enough.

Particularly with a Nerinx education, young women can achieve anything. It is important to just open your eyes and think about a variety of careers. If you are interested in medicine, do volunteer work, do research—having some sort of patient-care or research experience can really help see what the field is like and if you like it. Getting a strong background in STEM allows you the opportunity to think about a variety of fields in medicine whether that is as physician, nurse, pharmacist, or administrator. There are so many health-related careers. They are all very important to wellness. The more science and math you do, the easier it is. Take as much as you can in high school!

2016 MOLLY MALONE Molly Malone graduated from Nerinx exactly 30 years apart from her mom Kimberly Osterman Malone '86.

Molly started as a registered nurse at Saint Louis Children's Hospital on the pulmonary unit in June—the same exact place where her mom took her first job and is celebrating her 30th year of employment.

KENNEDY MITCHUM Kennedy Mitchum graduated from Drake University's School of Journalism and Mass Communication and also prompted Merriam-Webster to update the definition of racism in its dictionary.

DAKOTA RECKAMP Dakota Reckamp graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a degree in Criminal Justice and minors in Public Law and Political Science. She is a firstyear student at Saint Louis University School of Law.

2015 SARAH CONNOLLY After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Truman State University with a degree in Biological Sciences, Sarah is pursuing a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Michigan. Currently, she is using cryo electron microscopy (cryoEM) to study bacterial toxins.

MORGAN EINWALTER Morgan Einwalter graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with dual degrees in Mathematics and Statistics.

VIVIAN HULSEY After graduating from Smith College, with a dual degree in Government & Comparative Politics and German Studies, Vivian became a Loretto Volunteer in Washington D.C. Currently, she is working as a campaigns and organizing associate for Faith in Public Life. Recently, Vivian was named a Fulbright Scholar and will head to Germany in January to teach English and American studies.

EMMA LOHMAN After graduating from Mizzou with a Bachelor of ScienceNursing, Emma began working as a registered nurse in the Pediatric ICU at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

2014 MARIA BRICENO Maria Briceno graduated from Mizzou with bachelor's degrees in Art and Archaeology/ Sociology. She was selected to represent the College of Arts and Science during the December 2019 commencement

EMILY KAISER Emily Kaiser is a M.S. candidate in Oceanography at the University of Delaware's School of Marine Science and Policy concentrating on paleoceanography and the mid-Pleistocene Transition. She recently was published as a first author of a research article in the AGU 100 Journal.

CHLOE MILLIKAN Chloe Millikan is a full-time second-year law student at the University of Missouri Kansas City where she is on law review and works part-time as a pro se writ clerk.

1924 Society

The 1924 Society is a membership made up of our alumnae and friends who have included Nerinx Hall in their estate plans or named the school as a beneficiary in a charitable gift arrangement. In 1924, Nerinx opened its doors, graduating its first class of 31 young women in the summer of 1925. This class forged a path for future generations, just as membership in the 1924 Society can do. You can ensure a lasting legacy of your own through the future of Nerinx.

This year we welcome these four alumnae into the Society and thank them for their dedication to their alma mater.

Susan Johnson ‘68

Susan enjoyed her experience at Nerinx, including directing annual musicals and serving as President of Pep Club. She attended St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana and spent her career working in Chicago as a benefits consultant. Fifteen years ago, she reconnected with Nerinx and later joined the Board of Directors in 2011, acting as Chair from 2017-2019. Susan continues to be a vital member of the Nerinx community and currently serves on the Strategic Planning Committee and President’s Council. She looks forward to seeing her great-niece Abby graduate from Nerinx this spring.

“Getting reconnected at school over the past 15 years really opened my eyes to the gifts I received from my education and life experience at Nerinx. We didn’t talk about it so directly back in the 60s, but the sense of empowerment and individual responsibility to the community was so inbred in us that it never occurred to me that I couldn’t do whatever I set my mind to do. Now, watching the young girls come in as freshmen and then graduate as strong women, I want to make sure that Nerinx continues to thrive long after I am gone. The need for financial aid continues to grow so that students, like my niece, can have the advantages of a Nerinx education. I decided to include Nerinx in my estate plans so that the second century of Nerinx education will be even better than the first!”

Sandra Bentley Nelson ‘52

Sandra Bentley grew up a "South Saint Louis City girl." She was awarded a scholarship her first year at Nerinx Hall and worked multiple jobs to help pay for tuition and expenses for the remaining three years. She was involved in Drama, Cheerleading, Athletic Association, and served as Senior Class President. Sandra raised a family, worked, and traveled through the years. She enjoys painting and writing, and most recently self-published her memoir. Before the COVID-19 outbreak, Sandra volunteered at Shepherd’s Center and also enjoyed spending time with her best Nerinx friends. Their friendship has endured 50+ years of sharing joys and sorrows together.

“Nerinx Hall introduced me to a world of cherished friendships…the friends I made at Nerinx remain my closest friends today. Every young woman should have the opportunity to experience such caring and compassionate friendships and the values taught at Nerinx to be better prepared for the future. I have included Nerinx Hall in my will in the hope that this bequest will enrich future generations of Nerinx women.”

Shirley Sahrmann ‘54

Shirley enjoyed her time at Nerinx playing basketball, volleyball, bowling, and softball. She was a member of the Pep Club and President of the NH Athletic Association. She remembers Marcella Vogt being tough as the PE and Science teacher, and Sr. Mary Louise taught Chemistry. The polio epidemic inspired her field choice and she attended Washington University where she was one of few to enter into a new Physical Therapy program. Dr. Sahrmann is Professor Emerita of Physical Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine. She also earned master’s and doctorate degrees in Neurobiology from Washington University. She has a published textbook that was translated into seven languages and until COVID-19 was an international lecturer on the Human Movement System, her discovery of movement patterns, and their impact on musculoskeletal disease and overall health.

Shirley is a Nerinx Women of Excellence award recipient and currently serves on the President’s Council.

“The years in high school are a formative time in many ways that extend beyond a pure academic experience.

Foundations in personal development that provide a base for the future are also a big part of the experience. My 4 years at Nerinx provided a base that has enabled me to have a career that I could never have imagined because of the opportunity to help individuals compromised in mobility and to enhance the science and practice of the profession of physical therapy. Helping other young women have a comparable experience is the purpose of my gift. I am so fortunate to be able to give back.”

In Our Hearts

After her time at Nerinx, Peggy graduated from Saint Louis University. She married Charles Crump in 1954. They moved to Winnetka, Illinois where they raised three children. Peggy earned a master's degree in Education and worked in Special Education for the New Trier High School District, retiring in 1994. She continued to serve as a substitute teacher and exam proctor for many years.

Peggy enjoyed gardening and traveling to gardens throughout the world. She loved tennis, golf, and playing bridge.
