Από την εποχή που η Χρύσα, φοιτήτρια της Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών, ζωγράφιζε ένα κυκλαδικό ειδώλιο να κοιτάζει μέσα από τη τζαμαρία τα Εξάρχεια της νεότητάς μας, πέρασαν πολλά χρόνια. Τα αγάλματα ξαναβγήκαν στον φυσικό τους χώρο, γύρισαν στις λάσπες της ανασκαφικής τους μήτρας και η Χρύσα έτρεξε να τα ζω-γραφίσει (να –γράψει τη –ζωή τους, δηλαδή), όπως στο έργο της με το γυναικείο άγαλμα στο Δίον, που βλέπω τώρα απέναντί μου. Τα αγάλματα ξαναγύρισαν στα Μουσεία (στο Δίον, άλλωστε, εκτίθενται τσιμεντένια αντίγραφα), αλλά η Χρύσα έμεινε στις ιδρωμένες λάσπες των ρυακιών, των ποταμών και των βούρκων. Ούτε ο Κραουνάκης δεν τις μελοποίησε τόσο ωραία… Σε άλλες χρονιές, σε άλλα οδοιπορικά, τα πινέλα της και οι μουσαμάδες της νότισαν στην αρμύρα του Κορινθιακού, τα χρόνια που ο Θωμάς πρωτοδελφίνευε στη θάλασσα. Ο χρωστήρας της αναζήτησε σκιά. Βρέθηκε να έρπει πίσω από μια κολοκυθιά, να ησυχάζει κάτω από μια γέρικη ελιά, να τσιμπάει σπόρια από τα ρόδια του Παλλαντζά. Και το ταξίδι να πορεύεται μαζί με τη ζωγράφο του. Στα ήσυχα νερά και τις λεπτόκοκκες λάσπες του ποταμού την βρήκα να πλένει τα πινέλα της εφέτος. Μου έδωσε ραντεβού στις πηγές του, με άφησε να δροσιστώ κάτω από τα πλατάνια και να μυρίσω τον λάγνο ίσκιο τους, να ισορροπήσω στη σιδερένια σκάλα του αόρατου στόλου της λίμνης που τα νερά τροφοδοτούσαν γουργουρίζοντας, αλλά σε κανέναν να μην πω “πώς τον λέν’ τον ποταμό”. Έμεινα όσο μπορούσα περισσότερο στις όχθες του… Άφησα την αυγουστιάτικη κάψα μου στις πηγές, πήρα τον δρόμο της πόλης και ήρθα να δω τα έργα της Χρύσας στον κλιματιζόμενο παρόχθιο χώρο του Βριλησσού. Σ’αυτό το ποτάμι, όμως, δεν φυτρώνουν πεντάτοξα ρωμαϊκά υδραγωγεία. Σας κούρασα…. Η Χρύσα ζωγράφισε (έγραψε τη ζωή, πάλι) μιας ορεινής υδάτινης λεκάνης, όπου αναβλύζουν οι πηγές ενός ποταμού. Πιάστηκε από το κέντημα της λιβελλούλας πάνω στο γυαλί του νερού και έφερε τις ομόκεντρες αυτές ρυτίδες στα έργα της. Ρούφηξε τόσο δυνατά την υγρή σκιά κάτω από τη συκιά, που οι μπουρμπουλήθρες των νερών που ανεβαίνουν από τον βυθό άρχισαν να χοροπηδάνε στον βυθό των τελάρων της. Αναψυκτικά έργα –σκεφτείτε το λίγο! Η ζωγράφος αντιλήφθηκε σωστά τον χώρο αυτό ως μήτρα ζωής, ως κρατήρα κοσμογονικής δημιουργίας, και μέσα από το ελάχιστο βάθος της κρυστάλλινης λεκάνης των πηγών ανέσυρε σπαράγματα / fragmenta ενός σύμπαντος ιριδισμών, κατοπτρισμών, βυθών και ουρανών. Χωρίς ήχους, γιατί στο σύμπαν εκείνο η ζωή είναι τόσο εκκωφαντική, που ντύνεται σιωπή. Θα δείτε τίτλους χαριτωμένους στα έργα της έκθεσης. Χαμογελάστε, αν σας φανούν παιγνιώδεις ή τρυφεροί, εκτιμήστε τους όμως σαν ψέλλισμα, ηχοχρώματα σε ένα τοπίο βουβό, όπου τα χρώματα αντανακλώνται καλειδοσκοπικά. Σαν τις λέξεις που θα ακούγατε αν σας αφήναμε να μπείτε, και εσείς, στο μυστικό ποτάμι της Χρύσας. Ψηφίδες ύδατος, ρυτίδες χρώματος. Shall we dance?

Fragmenta Laci The lake fragments of Chryssa Verghi

The statues returned to the museum (the exhibits at Dion are now concrete replicas, after all), but Chryssa remained at the sweaty mud of streams, rivers and bogs. Not even Kraounakis set them so beautifully to music…

In other years, other journeys, her brushes and canvases were caught in the salty spray of the Corinthian Gulf, in the times when Thomas reigned over the seas. Her brush sought some shade; it found itself crawling behind a gourd squash, resting under an old olive tree, taking seeds from the pomegranates of Pallantzas… and following the painter on her journey.

This year I found her washing her brushes in the quiet waters and the thin-grained mud of the river. She told me to met her at its springs and allowed me to cool down under its plane trees, to smell their lusty shade, to balance on the iron gangways of the invisible fleet of the lake which is fed by the murmuring waters—but I was not to tell anyone “what the river was called”. I stayed at its banks as long as I could… I left the August heat at the springs, took the road to town and came to see Chryssa’s works in the air-conditioned riverside venue on Vrilissos. But no five-span Roman aqueducts grow in this river.

I must have tired you….

Chryssa has painted (or, again, ‘written up the life of’) a mountainous water basin formed by the springs of a river. She caught the needlework of the dragonfly upon the glassy water, and brought those concentric ripples into her works. She sucked the wet shade under the fig tree so hard that the bubbles of water that rise from the bottom started to hop around in the bottom of her canvases. Fizzy works—just think about it! The painter rightly saw this space as a life-giving womb, a crater of cosmogony, and from the shallow depth of the crystal water basin she retrieved the fragmenta of a universe of iridescence, reflections, skies and bottoms. Without sounds, because life in that universe is so deafening that it dresses itself up as silence.

You will see some cute titles on the works in the exhibition. Smile if you find them playful or tender, but appreciate them like a mumble, like the timbre in a mute landscape where the colours are reflected kaleidoscopically; like the words you would hear if you, too, were allowed into the secret river of Chryssa.

Tessellae of water, ripples of colour. Shall we dance?

Many years have gone by since Chryssa, as a student of the School of Fine Arts, painted a Cycladic idol looking through a window at the Exarcheia of our youth. The statues returned to their natural place, went back to the muddy womb of the excavation site, and Chryssa rushed over to paint them (or to ‘write up their life’), just as in her work with the woman’s statue at Dion that I have in front of me right now.

...Στην τέχνη, το θέμα είναι ένα πρόσχημα που λίγο ενδιαφέρει. Μια πρώτη ύλη που στο τέλος της δημιουργίας δεν θα είναι πια αυτό πού ήταν. Αναζητούμε μόνο τη μεταμόρφωση. την υπέρβαση που θα μεταφέρει το αρχικό υλικό από τον κόσμο των πέντε αισθήσεων στο αχανές πεδίο της ψυχής. Εκεί πού η μνήμη ξέρει να κρατά μόνο το απαραίτητο ερέθισμα, το ελάχιστο εκείνο που σαν το άτομο του Δημόκριτου περικλείει και όλο το Σύμπαν. Αυτό το περιεκτικό και ελάχιστο που προκύπτει μόνο από την προσωπική αλήθεια του καλλιτέχνη είναι που δεν βρίσκουμε πια στον αγοραίο χώρο της τέχνης και κυρίως στην ζωγραφική της εποχής. Γι αυτό και κάθε συνάντηση μαζί του, πολλαπλασιάζει την ζωή μας-αυτό το αίσθημα ότι οι φόβοι μας, η χαρά μας, η σιωπή και π αμφιβολία μας μοιράζονται και σ’ άλλους. Ένας τρόπος για να υπάρχουμε, για να μην νοιώθουμε μόνοι. Σ’ αυτήν την τυραννία του αυστηρά προσωπικού-χωρίς ακρότητες, εντυπωσιασμούς και προσωπεία, στην στενωπό της Τέχνης πού συνθλίβει το περιττό και άχρηστο, επιδίδεται η Χρύσα Βέργη. Ξέρει πως η τέχνη της είναι μόνο δρόμος. Η ατραπός που δεν έχει τέλος, που δεν υπόσχεται κάτι, μια θέση οπουδήποτε, ένα λήμμα στο λεξικό της επικαιρότητας. Μόνο μάχες και αναμετρήσεις με τον πιο σκληρό αντίπαλο. τον εαυτό της...

In art, the subject is a pretext, and little interest attaches to it. It is raw material, which by the end of the creative process will no longer be what it was. We seek only transformation, the transcendence which will transport the original material from the world of the five senses into the infinite field of the soul - into the place where memory knows how to retain only the essential stimulus, that infinitesimal thing which, like Democritus’ atom, also encloses the entire universe.

This concise and minimal quality, produced only by the artist’s personal truth, is what we no longer find in the market-place of art, and especially in the painting of the current period.

That is why each encounter with it has a generative effect on our life, creating a feeling that our fears, our joy, our silence and our doubts are shared by others. It is a way of existing, a way of ceasing to feel alone.

Chryssa Verghi throws herself into this tyranny of the strictly personal (though without going to extremes, seeking to create cheap impressions, or hiding behind masks), into the narrow defile of Art in which everything superfluous and useless will be crushed. She knows that her art is only a road, a path which has no end and which promises nothing: no place anywhere, no entry in the dictionary of current events. All it holds in store is battle and confrontation with the cruelest opponent: the artist herself.

…The view of the motif from above, from a distance, prescribes the vertical development of the composition which rules out the horizon. Thus the heresy of perspective is avoided, which, moreover, is ordained by the aesthetics of modernism, while the painting surface itself is identified with the motif… …She makes her painting material both thicker and thinner using glazing, impasto, coatings and palimpsests in order to create images which sometimes refer to the traditional landscape and other times are more reminiscent of the lunar landscape of Tapies while at still other times they show a connection with the gestural work of Pollock…

...Η απεικονιστική δεξιότητα είναι μεγάλη και ο θεατής θα μπορούσε να αρκεστεί στην απόλαυση της μαστοριάς, ωστόσο σε δεύτερη ανάγνωση οι ζωγραφιές αναδεικνύουν έναν δυναμικό προβληματισμό ανάμεσα στο αναγνωρίσιμο και το αφαιρετικό, την «τάξη» και το «χάος», καθώς από πολύ κοντά τα έργα μοιάζουν σχεδόν αφηρημένα με πινελιές αυτοδύναμες αλλά και μεταδοτικές, την ίδια στιγμή. Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1959. Σπούδασε Ζωγραφική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας με δασκάλους τους Λ.Κανακάκη, Δ. Μυταρά, Ν. Κεσσανλή και Μ. Λαμπράκη-Πλάκα. Από το 1980 έως το 1984 σπούδασε Interior Designing στο Fine Arts School of California State University of Long Beach με δάσκαλο τον Mr. A. Turnauyer. Από το 1990 έως το 1992 και με υποτροφία του Ι.Κ.Υ. συνέχισε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στη Ζωγραφική στην Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux - Arts de Paris με δάσκαλο τον Mr. Pierre Carron. ΄Εργα της βρίσκονται στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων, στην Εθνική Πινακοθήκη, στη Πινακοθήκη Κουβουτσάκη, στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη, στο Μουσείο της Φλώρινας, στη συλλογή του Ομίλου Εταιρειών της ΑΓΕΤ Ηρακλής, στη συλλογή της Αγροτικής Τράπεζας, στη συλλογή Παπαστράτος και σε άλλες ιδιωτικές συλλογές τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό. ΄Εχει φιλοτεχνήσει πολλά ημερολόγια ιδιωτικών εταιρειών. Επιλέχθηκε να εκπροσωπήσει με το έργο της τη Σύγχρονη Ελληνική Τέχνη κατά τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του 2004. Στις 22 Σεπτεμβρίου 2008, στο πλαίσιο του Περιβαλλοντικού Προγράμματος του Ραδιοσταθμού ΣΚΑΪ και του Μουσείου Γουλανδρή Φυσικής Ιστορίας, δημοπρατήθηκε έργο της Χρύσας Βέργη, το οποίο κατακυρώθηκε στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων και τα έσοδα προσφέρθηκαν στο Ταμείο των Δασών.

CHRYSSA VERGHI Born in Athens in 1959, she studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under L. Kanakakis, D. Mytaras, Ν. Kessanlis and M. Lambraki-Plaka.

From 1980 to 1984 she studied Interior Designing at the Fine Arts School of California State University of Long Beach under A. Turnauyer. From 1990 to 1992 she continued her studies in painting on a Greek state scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Paris under Pierre Carron.

Her works can be found in the Greek Parliament, the National Gallery, the Kouvoutsakis Gallery, the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Florina, the Collection of the AGET Iraklis Group, the Collection of the Agricultural Bank of Greece, the Papastratos Collections and other private collections in Greece and abroad.

She has illustrated many calendars for private enterprises. She and her work were selected to represent Greek contemporary art during the Olympic Games of 2004.

On 22 September 2008, as part of the Environmental Programme of SKAI Radio and the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, one of the works of Chryssa Verghi was auctioned and finally bought by the Greek Parliament, and the proceeds were donated to the Forest Fund.
