«διαβάτες...» Όταν ο Λωτρεαμόν, στα Άσματα του Μάλντορορ, έγραφε για την ομορφιά της συνάντησης μιας ομπρέλας με μια ραπτομηχανή πάνω σε ένα ανατομικό τραπέζι,1 μετέτρεπε αυτόματα την προβληματική του έρωτα σε προβληματική του θανάτου. Στην ομπρέλα αποδίδεται συμβολικά ανδρικό περιεχόμενο, ενώ στη ραπτομηχανή, γυναικείο. Η συνάντησή τους πάνω σε ένα ανατομικό τραπέζι δηλώνει μια συνάντηση που οδηγεί στο θάνατο.2 Έτσι η απόλαυση της ομορφιάς μετατρέπεται σε θανατολαγνεία. Πρόκειται για μια διαδικασία η οποία εντάσσεται στο πλαίσιο της «μηχανής εργένης», σύμφωνα με την ομότιτλη έκθεση που διοργανώθηκε στο Παρίσι το 1976. Η ονομασία αυτή προέρχεται από το έργο του Duchamp, το «Μεγάλο Γυαλί» και αναφέρεται στη σταδιακή μηχανοποίηση του ανθρώπου και κατά προέκταση στην απομόνωσή του (εργένης) και στον θάνατό του, στους κόλπους του βιομηχανικού πολιτισμού. Κατά συνέπεια η «μηχανή εργένη» ορίζεται ως «μια φανταστική εικόνα που μετατρέπει τον έρωτα σε μηχανική του θανάτου».3 Αυτά και άλλα πολλά αναδύθηκαν στη σκέψη μου αντικρίζοντας τα έργα της Δάφνης Αγγελίδου, έργα σιωπηλά, μοναξιάς και μοναχικότητας. Η Αγγελίδου παρουσιάζει δρόμους πόλεων με κυρίαρχο το γκρίζο χρώμα και κάποιες ώχρες στους τοίχους των σπιτιών. Χώροι παγεροί, ορθογωνισμένοι, με προοπτική στην οποία το σημείο φυγής ανεβαίνει «βυζαντινά» προς τα πάνω, λες και θέλει να δυσκολέψει το βάδισμα των ανθρώπων. Μια κατασκευή που μετατρέπει το σύνολο σε μακέτα σκηνικού, μέσα στο οποίο οι άνθρωποι μετατρέπονται σε ενδείξεις ανθρώπων, σε ανθρωπόμορφα χαρτάκια κολλημένα στη μακέτα. Μεμονωμένες ευάλωτες υπάρξεις, πραγματικές «μηχανές εργένηδες», με γκριζωπά χρώματα και σε μια στάση που αναπαριστά κίνηση χωρίς να είναι, λες και κάποιο μαγικό ραβδί ακινητοποίησε τα πάντα ξαφνικά στη στάση που βρισκόταν το καθένα. Το σύνολο υποβάλλει ταυτόχρονα και την αναμονή για επανεμψύχωση, την αναμονή για ζωή. Όλες αυτές οι μορφές κρατάνε ομπρέλες, το πιο χρωματικό στοιχείο των έργων, το πιο «ζωντανό», αν και ξεχνάμε ότι τώρα βάφουμε και τους νεκρούς μας. Με το πάγωμα της κίνησης οι μορφές δίνουν την εντύπωση ότι η ομπρέλα αποτελεί πάγιο εξάρτημά τους, ότι δεν υπάρχει μόνο χάρη στο στιγμιαίο γεγονός της βροχής, η οποία μετατρέπεται και αυτή σε μια πάγια και χρόνια κατάσταση. Μόνο που η ομπρέλα πλέον χάνει την ανδρική της υπόσταση. Καθίσταται θηλυκή. Η ευθεία της λαβής χάνει τη φαλλικότητά της και καλύπτεται εξ ολοκλήρου από τη θηλυκότητα της καμπύλης, από το κυρτό και το κοίλο το οποίο κατά κανόνα καλύπτει και περιέχει. Σκεπάζουν σχεδόν ολόκληρο το κεφάλι και το πρόσωπο μπαίνοντας στη θέση τους. Αυτές οι ομπρέλες καθιστούν το χώρο χρωματιστό, πιο ευχάριστο και κινητικό. Μόνο που η ευχαρίστηση χτίζεται πάνω σε ένα υφέρπον και κυρίαρχο πένθος. Εμφανίζονται άνθρωποι κάτω από μια συνεχώς προστατευτική ομπρέλα δηλώνοντας τη συνεχή ανάγκη κάλυψης και προστασίας του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου και κατά συνέπεια την απανταχού παρουσία μιας απειλής. Απειλούνται εκ πρώτης όψεως από τη βροχή, από τη φύση, άρα από τον ίδιο τους

τον εαυτό ως φύση, ως σώμα και ως εκ τούτου από τον άλλον. Απειλούνται από τη συνάντηση με τον άλλον και παραμένουν μόνοι εκχωρώντας τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματά τους στην κάλυψη και την προστασία. Οι ομπρέλες, πιο πραγματικές, υποκαθιστούν τον άνθρωπο και χορεύουν πάνω σε ανέραστους ζωντανούς νεκρούς, απολαμβάνοντας το θρίαμβο τους. Εμποδίζουν το ζευγάρωμα γης και ουρανού, εισχωρώντας ανάμεσά τους. Εμποδίζουν το μεγάλο γόνιμο αντάμωμα, αλλά καθίστανται ταυτόχρονα και σύμβολο μιας χρωματιστής και φαινομενικά ευχάριστης μητρικής προστασίας που εμποδίζει τη συνάντηση με τον πατέρα. Ανέκαθεν ο ουρανός ήταν άνδρας και η γη γυναίκα, καθώς και οι πόλεις άλλωστε. Όπου όμως το αντάμωμα πραγματώνεται, όπου απουσιάζει η ομπρέλα, εκεί υπάρχει ο καρπός. Τα δέντρα, ελεύθερα προς τα πάνω, έχουν στα έργα της Αγγελίδου τους πιο γαλήνιους φυσικούς χρωματισμούς. Μοναδική ελπίδα η ομπρέλα, την οποία παρασύρει ο άνεμος, κίτρινη σαν τον αναμενόμενο ζωοδότη ήλιο. Εκτός όμως από τους δρόμους, η Αγγελίδου μας οδηγεί και σε χώρους καφενείων, δηλωτικοί και αυτοί της ανθρώπινης μοναχικότητας, χώροι δημόσιοι, παραδοσιακά ανδρικοί, από τους οποίους η γυναίκα μένει έξω και οι οποίοι μέσα από τα τζάμια των προσόψεων μετατρέπονται σε θλιβερές οθόνες θεάτρου σκιών. Στην άκρη ενός καφενείου, κάποιος τηλεφωνεί μέσα στην ασφάλεια της απόστασης και της μη σωματικής παρουσίας. Σε ένα άλλο κάποιος διαβάζει απέξω εφημερίδα, η οποία καλύπτει, όπως η ομπρέλα, ολόκληρο το κεφάλι του αναγνώστη. εδώ η παθητική ανάγνωση των γεγονότων υποκαθιστά την ενεργητική δραστηριότητα του ανθρώπου-αναγνώστη. Δίπλα σε έναν από αυτούς τους αναγνώστες κάθεται ένας τυφλός δίνοντας την ειρωνική και συνάμα τραγική εντύπωση ότι πρόκειται για το ίδιο άτομο. Θα σταματήσω όμως εδώ το μικρό μου παραλήρημα και θα τελειώσω με ένα έργο το οποίο, κατά την άποψή μου και μέσω μιας μεταφυσικής ατμόσφαιρας, εμπεριέχει, εν σπέρματι, την απάντηση στα παραπάνω ερωτήματα. Και αυτό συμβαίνει διότι ολόκληρο το έργο αναδύει δισταγμό, αμφιβολία, αμφιθυμία και αναρώτηση. Άρα περικλείει δυνητικά κινητικότητα, τίποτα εδώ δεν είναι ακόμα ολοκληρωμένο. Ένας άνθρωπος με μια μπλε ομπρέλα, χρώμα της πνευματικότητας, του αέρα, του νου και της σκέψης, ριζωμένος στη γη, σχεδόν σαν το διπλανό του δένδρο, με ένα κορμί που εμπεριέχει δυνάμει και τα δυο φύλα, προβληματίζεται μπροστά στην ανοιχτή αλλά σκοτεινή και σχεδόν ερεβώδη πόρτα ενός σπιτιού. Πιο εκεί, δεξιά, σε ένα φωτισμένο παράθυρο, εμφανίζεται μια άλλη ανθρώπινη μορφή σε στάση ανάπαυσης και αναμονής. Κάτω από το δέντρο, ένα τραπέζι με κόκκινο τραπεζομάντιλο, χρώμα αίματος και ζωής, χρώμα αναστάσιμο, κυριαρχείται από μια ατμόσφαιρα προσμονής για την έναρξη της γιορτής. Λες και περιμένει τη συνάντηση των δυο. Εδώ πλέον το τραπέζι δεν είναι ανατομικό, αλλά δυνητικά γιορτινό για την αναμενόμενη αλλά τόσο επίφοβη συνάντηση.

Βρισκόμαστε ένα βήμα προτού λυθούν τα μάγια που ακινητοποίησαν τον κόσμο ώστε να μπορέσουν να ζωντανέψουν τα πάντα. Βρισκόμαστε δηλαδή στα πρόθυρα, άλλωστε την πόρτα ατενίζει και ο άνθρωπος, της ίδιας της ζωής, της οποίας όμως το νόημα δεν είναι δεδομένο αλλά καλούμαστε να το δημιουργήσουμε. When Lautréamont wrote, in the Chants de Maldoror, of ‘the beauty of an umbrella’s chance meeting with a sewing-machine on a dissecting table’1, he automatically turned the issue of love into an issue of death. The umbrella is assigned, symbolically, a male content; the sewing-machine, a female content.

Their ‘encounter on a dissecting-table’ indicates a meeting leading to death2.

Thus the enjoyment of beauty is turned into a death-lust. It is a procedure that belongs in the context of the machines célibataires, the ‘bachelor machine’, so we are told by the 1976 Paris Exhibition of the same name. The name is due to Marcel Duchamp’s painting Le Grand Vitre; it refers to the gradual mechanization of humankind, and hence to its isolation (‘bachelor’) and its death in the clutch of industrial civilization. The machine célibataire is consequently defined as ‘a fantastic icon turning love into a mechanics of death’3.

This was one of several thoughts that crossed my mind as I stood in front of Daphne Angelidou’s paintings – taciturn works, works of isolation and seclusion.

Angelidou shows us city streets where the dominant colour is gray, with some shades of ochre on the walls of the houses. These are chill, squared-off space, the vanishing-point of the perspective lifting upwards rather in the Byzantine manner, as if to make it harder for the people to walk along. It is a device that turns the whole work into a stage set maquette, where people turn into signs of people, into anthropomorphic bits of paper pasted on to the maquette. Here and there are vulnerable beings, genuine ‘unmarried machines’, grayish and in a pose that enacts, without actually being, movement – as though a magic wand had suddenly frozen everything where it stood. The ensemble simultaneously suggests both waiting for reincarnation and waiting for life.

All these forms are holding an umbrella, the most colourful element in the pictures and the most lively, until we remember that now we even paint our dead.

With movement frozen, the forms give the impression that the umbrella is a fixed accessory of theirs; that it exists only thanks to the momentary event of rain, which likewise turns into a fixed and lasting state. Only, the umbrella now loses its male identity. It is made feminine. The straight part of the grip loses its phallic quality and is covered entirely by the femininity of the bend, by the curved and hollow thing which it normally covers and contains. When in place, virtually the whole of the head and face are covered. These umbrellas make the space colourful, more cheerful and kinetic. Only, the cheerfulness builds on a stealthy and dominant grief. It is under a constantly protective umbrella that people appear, showing modern man’s constant need for cover and protection, and hence the omnipresence of a threat. The threat is prima facie from the rain and from nature, which is to say from themselves, as nature and as body, and by the same token from the Other. They are threatened by encounter with the Other and re-

main on their own, surrendering their human rights to cover and protection. The umbrellas, more real, take the place of the human being and dance over the wimpish ‘living dead’, relishing their triumph. They prevent earth and sky from mating, poking in between them. They prevent the great generative get-together, but at the same time are a symbol of a colourful and apparently happy maternal protectiveness that prevents the meeting with the father. In the old days the sky was a man and earth was a woman, as too were the cities. Where the get-together happens, where the umbrella is absent, there the fruit is. In Angelidou’s paintings it is the trees, free in an upward direction, that get the serenest and most natural hues.

The one and only hope is the umbrella that the wind sweeps along, yellow as the anxiously-awaited lifegiving sun.

The streets apart, Angelidou takes us to the café, a space likewise indicative of human seclusion, to the traditional male public space that women remain outside, the glass windows of the façade turning it into a miserable screen as of a shadow theatre.

At the far end of one café, there is somebody making a phone call, in the safety of being distant and not present in the body. At another there is somebody outside reading a newspaper that (like the umbrella) covers the reader’s whole head. Here the passive reading of events stands in for the human reader’s active involvement. Next to one of these readers sits a blind man, giving the ironic and at the same time tragic impression that they are one and the same person.

Here I shall end my brief furore and end with a painting that for me holds, with an air of metaphysics, the germ of an answer to the questions posed above.

It does so because the work as a whole is instinct with hesitation, doubt, indecision, and questioning. Thus it potentially contains a kinetic quality; nothing here is as yet done and dusted.

A person is standing with an umbrella of blue – the colour of spirituality, of the air, of the mind, of thought – rooted to the ground almost as much as the tree nearby, and with a body containing in posse both genders. This she or he is standing perplexed in front of the door of a house: the door is open but obscure, murky almost. Further to the right is a lighted window at which a second human figure appears in a pose suggesting relaxation and waiting. Under the tree is a table with a tablecloth of red - the colour of blood and life, a revolutionary colour – dominated by an air of impatience for a feast to begin. Almost it might be waiting for the encounter of the two humans. Here the table is no longer a dissecting-table, but potentially a festive board for the awaited, but so alarming encounter.

We are only a step from the moment when the spell that had frozen the world into immobility is lifted so that everything can come to life. We are, that is to say, at the threshold; also the human being is gazing at the door, which is the door of life itself. The meaning of life is not ‘given’; instead, we are called on to create it.

Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1962. Σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών (1980 -1986) με δασκάλους τους Γιάννη Μόραλη και Δημήτρη Μυταρά και ψηφιδωτό με τον Γιάννη Κολέφα. Διδάσκει στην Α.Σ.Κ.Τ., στο τμήμα του ψηφιδωτού από το 1987 μέχρι σήμερα. Το 1999 εκλέχτηκε Λέκτορας για το τμήμα του ψηφιδωτού. Το 2005 εκλέχτηκε Επίκουρη Καθηγήτρια Α.Σ.Κ.Τ. στο ίδιο τμήμα. Έργα της υπάρχουν σε δημόσιες και ιδιωτικές συλλογές, μουσεία και πινακοθήκες στην Ελλάδα, Αγγλία, Γαλλία, Ιταλία, Ισπανία, Bέλγιο και Κύπρο.

Appointed Assistant Professor of ASFA, in the Department of Mosaic, in 2005.
