is the first and the largest national park in Laos, and has one of the greatest wildlife biodiversity in the country. Wildife Ecotourism in National Park is supported by NGO Wildlife Conservation Society and has been developed to provide additional livelihood opportunities for local people. The activities have been designed to create a direct link between conservation and tourism so that the money generated by visitors acts as an incentive for local people to protect wildlife.

Trekking Tours

Dry Season Only (Oct.-June) Moderate to Challenging. Since 2016. - 2 to 5 days trekking into the National Park - Enter one of the most important wildlife habitats in Laos - Identify signs of wildlife: Wildcats, Bears, Dholes, etc - Maintain wildlife monitoring camera traps - Listen to the Northern White cheeked Gibbon calls - Overnight in jungle huts or ‘The Nests’

The trip highlight is the night-time wildlife spotlighting guided by former village hunters: drift silently down the river in canoes looking for wild animals such as Dear, Muntjacs, Civets, Slow Loris, and numerous bird species. National Park’s FREE Visitor Center The National Park headquarters are located in Muang Hiam (also called Viengthong), midway between NongKhiaw - SamNeua as well as NongKhiaw - Phonsavan (UNESCO Plain of Jars). At the visitor center learn about the National Park and Ecotourism (advance booking recommended!). Guesthouses, restaurants, hotsprings and a free self-guided walking/bird watching trail is available in Muang Hiam town.

Night Safari Start (Ban Son Koua Village) Travelling from Phonsavan or Sam Neua? -Meet your guide in the village! Homestay available. Traveling from Luang Prabang or Nong Khiaw? -Meet your guide in the village or in Muang Hiam Town.

Trekking Tour Start

-Meet National Park guide in Muang Hiam. A free transfer from the National Park office to the trekking start is included in the tour price. -Homestay can be arranged in the trekking villages prior the tour for travellers with private transportation arrangements.
