other’s Day on May 13 is a great opportunity to show all the mums how important they are to us and how much they are loved.

It can be a thankless job at times, and although many think Mother’s Day is just another commercialised event on the calendar, as a mother myself I can tell you that it is always nice to feel appreciated.

Most mums aren’t expecting a ridiculously expensive gift, if there’s anyone who will endorse the old “it’s the thought that counted” it is a mum receiving a gift from her child.

This year will be a sad occasion for me as it will be the first Mother’s Day without mine.

Take it from me, your time with your Mum is never guaranteed, it can be taken away in an instant so be sure to make the special occasions - and every other day for that matter - count.

Don’t forget to vote on May 12 if you live in east or south wards in the Penrith Local Government area. If you’re in east ward you have a clear-cut choice between Labor’s Robin Cook and Liberal’s Belinda Hill. If you live in south ward you can choose between Liberal’s Brian Cartwright, Labor’s Liam Rankine or Independent Sue Day. Tanya Davies was present with Attorney General Mark Speakman as he presented Ronald Jenkins with a certificate to show him the state’s appreciation for such long and dedicated service.

“It is a remarkable achievement to provide half a century of service as a JP, and one that deserves to be honoured,” said Tanya Davies.

“As a JP of 50 years, Ronald Jenkins has played an important part in the legal system in our community. He has helped hundreds of people at key moments in their lives, such as when they buy a house, access superannuation or go to court.”

JPs serve as an independent witness to documents people use for official or legal purposes. The primary functions of a JP are to witness a person making a statutory declaration or affidavit, and to certify that a copy of an original document is a true and accurate copy.

HE last weekend in May will be an opportunity for you to dig deep when you hear the knock at your door; a chance to help many people requiring assistance to get back on their feet.

For the past 28 years in a row, the Lions Club of Emu Plains have assisted the Salvation Army with their Red Shield Doorknock Appeal, and this year will be no different.

The Appeal is the major fundraiser

for the Salvos, and getting troops on the ground for it can be a mammoth task.

The Lions provide help in the way of drivers, team leaders and collectors for the Emu Plains and Leonay areas, for the door knock which is held on Sunday, 27th May. Major Gary Smith of the Salvation Army, Glenmore Park, said the Red Shield Appeal funds were vital in ensuring the Salvos can do their job, which is helping those in need across the region.

“The Red Shield Appeal funds help The Salvation Army deliver the many

social services we provide,” Major Smith said.

“Those services include family welfare assistance, refuge for women and children in crisis, homeless shelters, youth drop-in centres and support programs, emergency and disaster relief, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, counselling, family tracing, bereaved by suicide support, disability programs, employment services and training programs, rural and outback chaplains, court and prison chaplains and chaplains to emergency service personnel.”

Nepean River bridge reaches the western bank

A

nother major milestone has been achieved with the new Nepean River pedestrian bridge reaching the western side of the river.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith said the landing of the new bridge has brought the Penrith community one step closer to the newest piece of active transport infrastructure in the region.

“Crews have been on the job since June 2016 to prepare the river and site for the new pedestrian bridge so it’s great to see the bridge has safely made its way across the iconic waterway,” Stuart Ayres said.

“We celebrated the launch of the bridge segments at the end of last year and community members can now see the new bridge in its full form.

“In five short months, crews have expertly and carefully launched the 700 tonne bridge across the river which will be an icon for the region for years to come.”

Stuart Ayres said the launch is a delicate process with around 20 crew members needed to operate the machinery to lift the final segment into place.

“The launch of this section involves using two heavy lift jacks to pull the final section of the bridge across sliding tracks which are made of stainless steel

and Teflon,” Stuart Ayres said.

“Once this section of the bridge is pulled to the western side of the Nepean River, it will rest on the permanent pier.

“The last segment of the bridge required a lot of forward planning and it’s great to see the bridge is now in its final place, almost ready for the community to walk across.

“While the bridge is now in its position, crews are still getting on with the job to build the eastern approach and complete finishing work on the truss railing.”

Stuart Ayres said the community and motorists travelling across Victoria Bridge will now be able to see the new pedestrian bridge in its entirety.

“This new bridge will transform the

way Penrith residents interact with the Nepean River and will provide a safe crossing for years to come.”

The new bridge is expected to be completed later this year, weather permitting.

rug drivers and motorists who illegally use their mobile phones are being targeted as part of the NSW Government’s road safety reforms.

The Road Transport Legislation Amendment (Road Safety) Bill 2018 extends powers relating to roadside oral testing for cocaine, increases penalties for driving under the influence and enables camera based enforcement of illegal mobile phone use.

The Bill: • Amends the Road Transport Act 2013 to toughen penalties for drivers under the influence of drugs, include cocaine within the mobile drug testing regime; and enable enforcement of camera detected mobile phone use offences • Amends the Transport Administration Act 1988 to pay any fines from camera detected mobile phone offences to the Community Road Safety Fund • Amends the Marine Safety Act 1998 to ensure regimes for oral fluid drug testing applies to marine drivers and vessel operators.

Tanya Davies said that the reforms would help to achieve the

NSW Government’s road safety goals as part of the Road Safety Plan 2021.

“NSW is the first state in Australia to introduce legislation to enable automated camera enforcement of mobile phones, showing this Government’s ongoing commitment to road safety as technology and societal trends change,” Tanya Davies said.

Last year 74 people lost their lives in crashes where a driver or rider had an illicit drug present in their system.

“Driving under the influence of drugs has emerged as a significant factor in our road toll, along with alcohol, speeding, fatigue and mobile phone distraction,” Tanya Davies said.

From 2012 to 2017, 184 crashes involved illegal mobile phone use, which resulted in 7 deaths and 105 injuries.

“It’s worth remembering that at 60 kilometres per hour, a car travels 33 metres in two seconds.

Even taking your eyes off the road for a few seconds to look at your, it leaves you virtually blind,” Tanya Davies said.

The legislative reforms will come into effect from 1 July 2018.

Lightning strikes twice for one lucky Penrith man

A

Penrith man has been left stunned by this week’s revelation that he has won the $200,000 1st Prize in a Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw for the second time.

The happy winner won the 1st Prize of Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw 1094, drawn on Tuesday 8 May 2018.

He also shared that he won the same prize a decade ago.

When a NSW Lotteries official contacted the winner this afternoon, the man was left momentarily speechless by the news.

“Bullsh**t!” he finally exclaimed.

“This is just excellent news.

“Every fortnight or month, I buy a few Lucky Lotteries tickets. Many years ago I won the 1st Prize on Lucky Lotteries – so this is the second time I’ve won $200,000.

“It’s a bit of a shock, but I can handle it!

“I’ll pay off some debt and then go on a big trip! I want to go back to Europe – I went there about 10 years when I won the last prize.”

Having won the 1st Prize for the

second time, the man declared Lucky Lotteries was his preferred game.

“I don’t play any other lottery games, I only play Lucky Lotteries because for me the odds are right – one chance in 200,000 to win the 1st Prize,” he said.

“I always play random numbers too!”

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his winning entry of 10 random numbers from High Street Lotto, 447 High Street, Penrith.

High Street Lotto owner Lindsey Clark said it was fantastic his outlet

had sold a 1st Prize winning Lucky Lotteries entry.

“This is the first big winner we’ve had since we opened in December last year. It’s great to be on the winner’s list!

I was watching a video on youtube the other day as a teenager sucked a condom up her nose as one of the latest fads, and I seriously thought to myself, we are in really good hands as this is one of our future leaders. It was extremely invigorating to know that when the world is in total disarray we have bright sparks that skull beers and stick electrodes on their nipples attached to 240V power for social media pranks, that could possibly be making decisions regarding our country.

I often wonder about people’s mindset, what generic malfunction in the brain that says jumping headfirst off a building is totally acceptable and let’s just say… normal practice?

Now you are probably reading this and thinking: so, what has this got to do with security or the operational parts of security, why is this crazy woman going on about fads, condoms, and sticking a garden hose in your right ear for a party trick?

This simple answer is lack of foresight, prevention and proactiveness. I hear the crickets starting, trust

me this column is going to get better; just hang in there and stay awake, Coming from a security background, let’s just say for 30 years, I have seen most if not all the stupidity that surrounds us, such as drunken boneheads, the accidental thieves, the entrenched thieves, the dedicated thieves, the stupid thieves, people not reading signs, lack of common sense, and the classic one… lack of accountability. As Shaggy once said in a song “wasn’t me”.

I have worked at airports, high-rise buildings, construction sites, cow paddocks, watching concrete dry (literally, I kid you not) schools, festivals and it appears the air never changes, it is like the public are in a self-absorbed trance or something like that, bouncing off walls and walking like the dead walkers in the TV show walking dead.

I also find this with security– on themselves and their property. Sounds easy – but appears not – trust me!

I find it is like going to the dentist, it isn’t until

you bite into the ice cube and snap a tooth on a Sunday night that you suddenly realise “I need a dentist”. The same goes for security.

I have seen so much slap-happy stuff with regards to personal security, that even the local community face-slapping group was jealous.

Day-in and day-out people contact me saying that they shoulda, woulda, coulda, implemented things before they were robbed, broken into, had graffiti and the list goes on and on and on and on…. And did I say… and on.

So, this brings me to ask the question, why?

Thankfully we have so many red lights in Penrith that I can ponder that question whilst waiting for the green light.

So, I guess my message today is that if you feel the need to stick your head in a bucket of ice for 20 minutes or bungie jump sideways off a bridge without a band, that’s fine – however you really need to review your personal and property security.

he Model A Ford Club of NSW is hosting an exciting event on the 20th of May to celebrate a 90 year milestone of the classic car being available in Australia. The celebration will consist of a convoy through the streets of some locally-owned classics.

The cars will begin at Sinclair Ford on the Great Western Highway at Kingswood at 9am, where the club invites everyone to come and check out the classic cars.

They will leave the dealership at 10am for a drive up to Springwood, where they will turn off the highway and continue to drive to the Hawkesbury Lookout and stop there for lunch. After the lunch they will proceed to drive to Richmond and Windsor before returning along the Northern Road back to Kingswood.

Charlie Sharpe, the founder of the Model A Ford Club of NSW and Helen Sharpe the Secretary of the Club are hoping to have 20 vehicles there on the day.

“We will met at 9.30am, so anyone wishing to come along and check out the cars before we leave, they are most welcome to do so,” Charlie said.

In Australia, the Model A went on sale five months after the release in America in the capital cities on the 15th May, 90 years ago. The initial models were Phaeton, Roadster, Tudor Sedan, Business Coupe, Sports Coupe and AA Truck.

The Model A Ford Club of NSW had

their first meeting in Sydney in 1969 when six people and families attended.

On the 6th November 1970 the inaugural meeting was conducted with 24 people.

At this meeting the constitution was voted on, then adopted and the club began and today there are 140 members in the club.

Held every two years, ArtyBra & Tie® is their biggest fundraising event. In 2016 we launched Arty Tie, with some great artistic responses. The Shadlow/ Marsden Family

lizabeth Sarah and Martha Brabyn Marsden were the granddaughters of Reverend Samuel Marsden. Their parents were Elizabeth Howard Brabyn Marsden and Charles Simeon Marsden. Elizabeth (Jnr) was born at the Marsden property “Mamre” at St Marys in September 1832. In 1855 she married George Albert Shadlow at St Mary Magdalene Church at St Marys. George was the son of Thomas and Louisa Shadlow (Nee: Randall) born at Castlereagh in 1831. George’s father Thomas was 18 years old when he was charged, along with two others, for stealing four calves the property of Mr Sutton of Kegworth in Leicestershire in England. He was sentenced to death at Leicester court in March 1818 that was later commuted to life imprisonment and later transported to NSW for seven years. His surname at the Lent Assizes was ‘Sharlow’. On that day in Leicester Court forty-three people were charged, averaging eleven minutes for each hearing.

Of those tried twenty-four were sentenced to hang.

Thomas Sharlow was described as five foot-six & a half inches with fair ruddy complexion, dark sandy hair, and hazel eyes. Leicester had 58% of its people living below the poverty line and this was caused by ‘the commons’ being fenced and sold as farmland. Up to this time people had lived off the commons. The division of the commons stopped the ordinary folk from making a living and it turned them into poachers and thieves. Thomas, who was born in England in 1799 left on the “Baring 2” in 1819 on a long journey of 150 days with scurvy raging through the ship that arrived at Farm Cove in June. On board were detachments of the 48th and 89th Regiments, some stores and general cargo. The “Baring 2” was armed with ten guns and carried a crew of sixty-six. On arrival, Thomas was assigned to work for a farmer in the Castlereagh district and in the General Muster of 1822, Thomas (now) Shadlow was still a convict and assigned to Jacob Russell at Windsor. His wife Louisa was born in Castlereagh in 1808. According to the Census in 1828, Thomas was a free farmer at “Kerry Lodge” in the district of Evan for a number of years before moving. In the Parliamentary Return of 1855 for land holders at Castlereagh, Thomas Brown was farming its 107 acres. Thomas Shadlow was living on his farm “Eagle Vale” of 15 acres near Penrith with five cattle and suffering from dementia which saw him gradually taking no further part in the people or the district around him. In 1924 William Charker was reminiscing about the 1850’s and said that Thomas had the first house on the northern side of the main road (Highway). He died on his farm at the age of 85 and is buried at Badgery’s Creek cemetery. This cemetery is where the graves are being moved to Liverpool due to the building of the new airport.

George, his son, farmed his mother-in-law’s property “Shrivenham” at Luddenham and later took over the “Eagle Vale” property of his father

Thomas. It was said that George owned a shop at St Marys that was run by “Cuffy” Morris. One of George’s daughters would call into the shop every Monday after school to collect the 9/- (nine shillings) rent. George was a teamster over the mountains before the coming of the railway. When the railway line was extended from Blacktown to Penrith he was a carter of the rails, bringing them to the site of the present St Marys’ station. George and Elizabeth had five children - Anne, Charles.

Elizabeth (Jnr), Henry and Mary. Their grandson Stephen James Shadlow, the son of Henry William & Fanny Shadlow (Nailin) was killed at Gallipoli in April 1915 at the age of 24 years. Elizabeth died aged 50 in 1882 on the “Eagle Vale” property.

Two years later George married Rachel Lees in the Wesleyan Church at North Springwood. She was the daughter of Cornelius & Henrietta Lees (Nee: Travers) and a descendant of John Lees the founder of Methodism in Castlereagh. There were seven children by the second marriage Cecil, Bertie, George (Jnr), Henrietta, Norman, Rachel (Jnr) and Victor. George (Snr) knew St Marys when wattle trees were growing in what is now the centre of town and there was a fair-sized stream running across Queen Street and through the land on James Bennett’s coach building factory.

In 1893 George strained his back when he slipped and fell while lifting a bag of oats at the age of 62 at “Mamre”. George died of bronchitis in June 1920 in Saddington Street at St Marys at the age of 89 and was laid to rest in the Methodist portion of the General cemetery at St Marys.

Rachel died nine years later at the age of 74 and is buried with George.

First wife Elizabeth sleeps alone at St Mary Magdalene cemetery at St Marys with her mother and sister Martha for company nearby. Martha Brabyn Marsden was born in 1836 at “Mamre” and married Thomas Shadlow (Jnr) in 1863. He was the brother of George and son of Thomas (Snr) and born in May 1833. They had six children - Alice, Charles, Clara, Horace, Robert, and Thomas (Jnr2). Thomas (Jnr) was in court at Penrith in January 1892 on a charge of cruelty to animals, accused of working two horses who were suffering from sore shoulders.

He was acquitted on one count but was fined on the second count of 25 shillings & six pence. At that time the family had just moved to live at Badgery’s Creek. Martha died of influenza in 1913 at the age of 77. The funeral took place at the St Mary Magdalene Church at St Marys and she was buried in the cemetery there. Reverend L R Connell read the burial service and Mrs John Price & Son conducted the funeral arrangements.

There is a lot of discussion about Feline Aids (FIV) but many people are unaware of the other retrovirus that can infect cats and cause severe disease – Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV).

How is it transmitted? While FIV is commonly transmitted by cats that fight (infected saliva to blood), FeLV is commonly transmitted by close ongoing contact with cats that are kept together. It can be transmitted from saliva to mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, nose) when an infected cat licks an uninfected cat, by passing blood to infected cats and mother to baby during pregnancy. The virus is not very hardy, it can only survive for minutesoutside the cat’s body and is readily killed by disinfectants.

What are the signs of infection? Most cats are able to fight the virus and become immune. The virus moves to the bone marrow in those cats that cannot mount an immune response. Bone marrow suppression causes severe immunosuppression and cats can develop a range of severe illnesses or infection as a result. Some cats develop lymphoma.

How is it diagnosed? There are specific FIV/FeLV blood tests that can be run in the clinic to see if a cat

is infected. Other tests may be required to investigate other illnesses present. In very young cats they can test falsely negative and require repeat blood tests to diagnose the infection.

What treatment is available? Most cats that have FeLV will not survive longer than 3 years after they are diagnosed. The myeloproliferative form (bone marrow suppression) does not respond well to therapy. Supportive care can be given in the form of blood transfusions and steroids. The form of lymphoma caused by FeLV tends to respond better to treatment than the myeloproliferative form.

Treatment may include chemotherapy and supportive treatment.

How do I prevent my cat getting FeLV? The vaccination for FeLV is very effective against the virus. FeLV can be included in the regular kitten vaccinations. Adult cats need to be tested to ensure they are negative before they can be vaccinated.

If a kitten or adult has had a known exposure to FeLV repeat testing may be required to ensure they are truly negative. Most will test positive within weeks of exposure, but it can take up to 90 days.

The final retest should be no sooner than this. If a cat has FeLV new cats should not be introduced to them.

Tubular Bells comes to Penrith

A

musical epic has been recrafted into a one of a kind theatrical spectacle featuring two musicians playing 20 instruments for nearly 70 minutes straight.

The Mike Oldfield classic, Tubular Bells will be played in full by two local musicians during a special performance at The Joan in July and audiences from Edinburgh to Katoomba have been lining up for this musical treat.

Daniel Holdsworth, a local musician based in the lower Blue Mountains, was experimenting one night and digging through his record collection when he and a mate, Aidan Roberts, decided to have a crack at performing Tubular Bells.

“It came out from a experimentation and jamming session,” Mr Holdsworth said.

“We both love collecting records from the 70s and 80s.

“Once we started jamming we found there was so many different styles of music in the one piece of music. From really gentile folk music to growling rock and even snazzy classical stuff. So we just tried to play it,” he said.

After a performance of the album in Katoomba to about 70 people the mates were asked to perform on the world stage at the Edinburgh Festival to a nearly sold our audience. Since then Mr Holdsworth has

performed the album nearly 500 times.

One of the reasons why the performance of a 70 minute album without musical lyrics work, Mr Holdsworth says, is because of the dynamics and the physicality of two people on stage performing 20 instruments.

“It works because it is not just about the music. There is a tense theatrical element to the performance. At any moment the whole thing can come crashing down. It is nearly impossible to play and that is what drives,” Mr Holdsworth said.

At the 2012 Sydney Festival nearly half the stage lost power in the middle of the performance so the pair had to move instruments around and wing it as they went on.

“This is a theatre show with the performance and the theatrics go hand in hand,” Mr Holdsworth said.

Even the physicality of the performance leaves the musicians sweaty.

“It is a real battle between mind and body. You have to trust that the body knows what it is doing. If you start to think about it you’ll stuff it all up,” Mr Holdsworth said.

“The beginning of the piece the music is really gentile but you’re physically doing a lot. You’re stressed out but you need to play the music so gently.

“There is a balancing act with trusting the people around you and the instruments as well. It is such a challenge,” he said.

After a line up change Tom Bamford has stepped in to replace Mr Roberts and together they will present their epic take on Tubular Bells to The Joan on June 29.

This will be a bit of a homecoming for both Mr Holdworth and Mr Bamford, both of whom grew up in the western suburbs.

“Every time we play at The Joan we feel like it is a social home performance,” Mr Holdsworth said.

“About five years ago and it was the first show at home since we played in Katoomba, after visiting and touring the UK with our show so it was really great for the people who have supported us as musicians to come and see us on stage.”

Testing the Bomb, Maralinga and Australian Art

J

oin the Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest for the opening of the Winter exhibition suite Black Mist Burnt Country, Saturday 26 May 2pm.

Black Mist Burnt Country is an award-winning national touring exhibition of artworks by over 30 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists commemorating the British atomic tests in Australia in the 1950s.

Selected from public and private collections the exhibition features artworks from the past seven decades: Included are Arthur Boyd, Ian Howard, Pam Debenham, Toni Robertson, Rosemary Laing alongside Aboriginal artists such as Jonathan Kumintjarra Brown, Judy Watson, Hilda Moodoo, Yvonne Edwards and others.

Presenting works across the mediums of painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, new media and music, while exploring the varied perspectives and creative approaches of artists from post-WWII modernists to present-day artists.

Black Mist Burnt Country revisits the history of the British atomic test program at Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Islands and examines the impact on people and land, as well as its on-going legacies.

A variety of interactive elements

enable visitors to the exhibition to gain insights into the social, political and environmental dimensions, while placing the Australian atomic tests in the context of the nuclear arms race and its present-day realities.

“It is surprising how few people are aware that atomic bombs were exploded in Australia, and how little they know about the dislocation of Aboriginal people, the exposure of Australian servicemen and the contamination of the land. This exhibition offers some remarkable insights into a chapter of our history that has long-lasting consequences, while it poses some

important questions in relation to contemporary nuclear issues,” says JD Mittmann, exhibition curator.

Local resident, the late Jim Henderson worked for the Australian Military at the testing zone and a recording of his first-hand experiences will accompany the exhibition generating additional poignancy.

The project has been produced by Burrinja, Dandenong Ranges Cultural Centre, Upwey, Victoria. The project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program and developed through the Exhibition Development Fund of

National Exhibition Touring Support (NETS) Victoria. The project has also received financial assistance of Gordon Darling Foundation.

Black Mist Burnt Country received the 2017 Museums Australia Victoria Archival Survival Award (Small Museums) and a Highly Commended at the Museums Australia National Conference (Touring and Temporary Exhibitions).

SYDNEY PROPERTY PRICES CONTINUING TO REDUCE AND YOUR LIVING EXPENSES With Steve Beard Select Mortgage Broker

O

verall property prices in Sydney recorded another drop last month of 0.4 percent. This reduction is on top of similar small reductions over the last 9 months. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA, who govern our banking system) have had this intention for over a year to try and make housing prices in Sydney and Melbourne more affordable for the average households.

Apart from the well-publicised increase in interest rates for all loans with interest-only repayments and for investors, APRA and the current Royal Commission into banking are also focusing lenders (and in turn mortgage brokers) on the need to carefully study the actual living expenses of prospective borrowers.

The two reasons for this focus is to: 1. Make sure borrowers can afford the repayments on any loan that they apply for when all their known expenses are taken into consideration which will increase the standards and quality of new lending and 2. Reduce overall lending.

When applying for any home loan, lenders and brokers need to check your last 3 months savings account statements and credit cards to calculate

your average monthly living expenses. All expenses need to be accounted for and are generally put into categories like food, utilities, car expenses, entertainment, health insurance, general household expenses etc.

Historically, lenders would use a set figure for minimum living expenses depending on the number of people in the household. Everyone knows living in Sydney is generally more expensive than most other parts of Australia and so APRA is telling lenders to be more responsible by making sure they consider each applicant’s individual living expenses in assessing any home loan application.

Consequently, it is now harder for people to qualify for home loans. Also, when you add the higher interest rates for an investor or those wanting to only pay the interest and not pay any of the principle off their loan, finance is more expensive for those borrowers.

History always tells us that when finance is more expensive and harder to get, property prices always come down. So what should I do, I hear you say!

For those looking to buy in Sydney, I would be extremely selective and only look at properties that have realistic prices and vendors who are very motivated to sell. As the power in the property market is coming back to the buyers, I would not rush in to buy any property, especially if you buying as an investor due to the low rental returns.

SELECT MORTGAGE FINANCE

If you are looking to sell and cash in your equity or downgrade to a cheaper area, then I would consider putting your property on the market now. There are generally less properties on the market over winter so you may not have too much competition to sell.

If you are looking to sell and upgrade, then you may wait a few months before selling. You may get a lower price but you may get a bigger reduction on your purchase.

The Reserve Bank and so-called experts keep saying that the next move in interest rates will be up.

Market experts and bond market returns indicate that any increase won’t be for approximately 6 months at least. However, when interest rates do eventually increase, I think it is almost certain that property prices in Sydney will reduce even further. This is because of the extremely high amount of personal debt we have. Some people who are overcommitted will be forced to sell if interest rates increase and/ or their family incomes are reduced for whatever reason.

Tyrone’s perseverance finally pays off

he latest player to don the Penrith Panthers’ NRL jersey, winger Tyrone Phillips could have easily ended up in rugby, playing sevens for Australia.

But instead a decision to continue playing rugby league and sign with Penrith after being released by the Bulldogs at the end of the 2017 season, finally paid off for Tyrone Phillips, when he played just his 7th NRL game and first since 2016, last Friday night in Bathurst.

However the path to his latest NRL appearance was anything but smooth sailing for the Fijian international, having been sidelined for over four months with a pectoral injury.

It was only a fortnight ago that Penrith’s third Tyrone in the top 30 roster, finally returned from that injury, scoring three tries in the Intrust Super Premiership in his debut appearance for the club.

That first-up performance coupled with Penrith’s worsening injury crisis that has sidelined a third of the playing roster, enabled Phillips’ to not only make his return to the NRL but score two tries in the process, capping a remarkable two weeks for the 24year old winger.

“It’s probably been the most special two weeks of my life actually,” Phillips told Nepean News.

“I got the chance to play ISP last week and I got the call up to play (NRL) this week.

“It was pretty emotional to get that call up.

“I didn’t think it would come this quick and I hope I have grabbed it with both hands.

“I was just happy to go out there and play amongst the boys whom I haven’t played with before.”

Phillips admits the pectoral injury incurred during pre-season training was a tough time for him personally, having joined the club just before preseason looking for an opportunity on a one-year deal.

“I came to this club looking for a fresh start and big things but during the pre-season I tore my pec on the bench press and that set me back four and a half months,” Phillips replied.

“I tore it 26mm. It wasn’t great. It was my first surgery I have ever had to go through so it was a tough time.

“But a special mention to everyone who has helped me (especially) my rehabilitation strength and conditioner, Adrian, who helped me along the way with my fitness and my rehabilitation.

“Also speaking to all the boys though during training and stuff like that got me through those times.”

Phillips was more excited than nervous when he finally made his return in Wollongong last Saturday week to play along his new teammates for the first time albeit in the Intrust Super Premiership.

But despite that lure of a first grade spot after fullback Dylan Edwards’ suffered a season-ending shoulder injury the previous night, the winger says it was the furthest thing from his mind.

“To be honest there wasn’t many nerves, just excitement to play football again,” Phillips declared.

“It’s been a long time. I didn’t get to start the year as I wanted to.

“So to get out there and play football again was pretty special.

“Last week I didn’t want to think too much (about that NRL spot), I just wanted to do my job.

“The ISP coach (Guy Missio) actually spoke to me before the game and told me just to go out there and play my natural game, keep the boys positive and bring the energy.”

Last Friday night’s return to the NRL was special for another reason given that Phillips finally got the opportunity to play against his idol.

“When I found out I was playing against Johnathan Thurston and the North Queensland Cowboys, I was a bit in shock rather than having nerves,” Phillips conceded.

“To play against my idol was a pretty special moment as well.”

But despite the left-wing spot being all but Phillips’ for now given Penrith’s current injury predicament, with incumbent Josh Mansour (cheekbone) not expected back until at least Round 19, the winger isn’t looking too far ahead.

“I am just taking that each week by week as you can never know what can happen,” Phillips said.

“I’m just taking it day by day especially with football being a tough game and there’s a lot of injuries that pop up here and there.

“But injuries are a part of the game and part of the sport we play so we just have to deal with it.”

Nepean’s rising young tennis star

he Nepean District Tennis Association has a young star coming through its ranks. Joel Stevens has been training very hard over the past 12-18 months to develop his game with his coach Chris Woodland from Nepean Tennis and Tennis NSW. Joel has been achieving very good results over that time including winning the U16’s Nepean Easter Open, winning Nepean Junior Gold in both the singles and doubles and making the final of the NSW Age Gold for the U16’s and semi-finals for the doubles.

Joel has been playing tennis since he was seven and has excelled in the sport. Joel has previously been selected to play at the U/14’s National Championships in Melbourne as well as being selected in various state tournaments.

Joel spoke about his training schedule and how many competitions he plays in through his club and school.

“I train three to four times a week including training with the National Academy Junior Development squad at Homebush twice a week,” he said.

“I play local comp each week at Nepean Tennis and play three to four competitive tournaments each school term depending on what tournaments are on.”

Joel also spoke about what he hopes he can achieve in the near future for his tennis and representing his Nepean club.

“I hope to soon be playing Junior International Tennis Federation tournaments both in Australia and overseas,” he said.

“There aren’t too many tournaments where you are representing anyone, only at the end of the year when the National Championships are on in Melbourne where you represent your state but I represent Nepean Tennis at all tournaments as that is my Club.”

Thoughts Sparked From An Afternoon On The Hill At Kogarah Developing athletes effectively is a long term process which involves the implementation of clear pathways and progressions. Short term plans which lack patience and balance often push young athletes away from sport through the feeling of constant pressure, over training and the absence of fun and enjoyment.

Junior sporting organisations need to ensure they have clear plans in place to provide a structure and framework to best support young athletes in achieving their goals. A game philosophy is best suited when dealing with young athletes and volunteer coaches. How should the game be played?

This should be the most enjoyable and fun style for the players to participate in. It should also be the most enjoyable style to watch. The most popular sport on the planet has adopted the global philosophy of ‘the beautiful game’. An attractive worldwide acknowledged style to best play the game of soccer.

Very simple and very effective.

Rugby League complains about a lack of creative players… mostly from our leaders and decision makers within the game. These are the same leaders enabling the over coaching and over structure of our game from an on field and development perspective. NRL teams are playing with robotic styles of play which are almost identical and gone are the different and styles and philosophies which once existed within the game. This lack of variation in styles is flowing down into the junior levels of the game through a one size fits all robotic coaching philosophy and ‘system’. We are now as a game producing players who are coached to play

the same robotic style who have limited cognitive awareness or ability to break down defences and think creatively.

Sitting on the hill at Kogarah Jubilee Oval on Sunday afternoon watching the defending champion Melbourne Storm face the ladder leading St George Illawarra Dragons this was never more evident.

These two sides work to their certain points on the field to run scripted plays in order to break down the defence in hope of posting points. When the Dragons receive a penalty anywhere inside the opposition 40 metre zone they take penalty kicks. It has never been more difficult to attack an opposition try line in an attempt to score points. Because the defence is so structured and well drilled on both slowing the play the ball down but also reading these scripted plays.

I am proposing a problem so the least I could do is propose an answer. Well here it is… I have two suggestions. The first would be to lower the interchange to 6 or even at a pinch 4. The increase in the head knock protocol interchanges has taken away the fatigue element in the game. Coaches are also abusing this system with timely knocks to players who are to be subbed within certain periods of the game. There needs to be a method to tidy this up to take away the abuse of this system which allows some teams 10+ interchanges per game. The second is the need for the teams and players to use less structure. But at the moment we have rules and stipulations in place which place huge pressure on teams who give away penalties and make errors.

Coaches react to this pressure and constrict their playing style to be robotic… and we find ourselves

back at the beginning of the problem.

Game intelligence is a vital part of the junior development process and needs to be applied at all levels to ensure players are progressing at the applicable age appropriate stages. Develop the athlete’s ability to read and understand the game through their progression to ensure their decision making skills are constantly challenged. The ability to read and understand what skill or tactic is needed at what time during the game is often overlooked with the expectation the player must execute. Just because a young athlete cannot execute a skill or tactic consistently does not mean they do not cognitively understand why they need to apply it at the relevant time during the game. This is often the hardest element to coach particularly at the elite level. Hence its vital importance at the junior level.

Volunteer coaches should be equipped with information and plans in order to support them.

How do we expect coaches who are often mothers and fathers with full time jobs to create in depth and effective plans which are age appropriate to best develop junior players? These same coaches are often criticised for running the same style and game plans they see on television. But what are we doing to support them? If we are not giving them the support they need then we should not expect them to produce players with the appropriate skills to best fit an attractive style of play. Coaches should be supported with programs that address all aspects of the game for each development stage of training.

This should all feed into the positive and enjoyable style of play for junior athletes.

SPORT › Colonial’s incredible double hole-in-one moment

History was made at the Colonial Golf Course when two golfers playing in the same group hit a hole-in-one straight after each other.

Phillip Cadwallen and Kevin Ellison were at the 8th tee which was a par three and roughly 168 meters.

Phillip was the first one to sink the hole-in-one and it happened to be his second in just eight days. After all the cheering and congratulations from everyone around, it was Kevin who was not to be out done. He shot straight into the hole and made it two in a row and an unbelievable occurrence for the audience watching.

Terry Ryan a P.G.A. Australia member and Colonial Professional was there to witness the extraordinary moment.

“The odds of this happening are one in 17 million, well done guys Guinness book of record material,” Terry said.

Big victories at Masters Pennants

ig scores have been the order of the day in the opening two rounds of the 38th NSW Masters Pennants Golf competition.

Five local clubs - Leonay, Penrith, Glenmore Heritage Valley, Wallacia and Dunheved - are all entered this year across separate divisions and most have hit the greens running in the first two weeks.

Leonay started with a hard-fought 8-7 win over Macquarie Links in the opening round, before crushing Bardwell Valley 12-3 in the second round.

Glenmore defeated Bankstown 9-6 and Springwood 10-5, whilst Dunheved started the season with a 14-1 win over Ryde Parramatta, then followed up with 9-6 win over Camden.

Penrith had the biggest win of the first round, with a 15-0 annihilation of Roseville, but could not maintain that form in week two, falling 9-6 to Chatswood.

The competition has a bye on 12th

enrith prop, James Tamou says that whilst his former club, North Queensland were always primed for a big effort against the injury-ravaged Panthers, the team needs to find greater week-to-week consistency if they are to realise their goal of being a NRL top four side.

It comes in the wake of Penrith’s second loss in three games, a 2620 defeat at the hands of a North Queensland Cowboys outfit, desperately looking to avoid a 2-7 start to the season against a Panthers side that lost Trent Merrin (dislocated finger) in the pre-game warm-up.

The Panthers, dropped to third position with a 6-3 record following the loss.

“It is always tough (losing to your old team) but they have faced some heavy flak so credit to them, they turned it around,” Tamou told the Nepean News.

“You could sort of guess they were looking for a team that they could turn their season around against and unfortunately it was us.

“But in saying that we just need to be better if we want to be one of the top teams.

“That first 40 minutes we shot ourselves in the foot and it was always going to be hard to play catch up footy.

“It seems to be a trend. Silly mistakes, silly penalties.

the chances we gave to them.

“It goes to show that with our team, just 20 minutes is all we sometimes need to turn a game.

“But we need to be better than that.”

Despite the fan-fare of Tamou’s arrival at the start of last season, the former Cowboys premiershipwinning prop has had mixed success to date with his new club, culminating with a new role – playing off the interchange bench.

But rather than be kicking stones about playing from the bench, the former NSW and Australian Kangaroos prop instead is relishing the challenge of being able to contribute to what already is a strong forwards pack.

“I just want to make an impact to an already strong side,” Tamou declared.

“We’ve got big Reg, who I think is one of the best front rowers going around at the moment.

“James Fisher-Harris is playing out of his skin, and then there’s Trent Merrin playing up there in the middle.

“If that seems to be my role, I’m happy to come off the bench and keep laying the platform that they provide early on.”

Despite a burgeoning injury toll that has at least ten of Penrith’s top 30 roster unavailable for selection for the Friday night clash in Newcastle against the Knights, Tamou says it is important the team recaptures its early-season consistency given the games coming up before the Round 13 bye.

“We’ll obviously look at the stuff that went well, take the positives out of the game and we’ll go back to the drawing board to look at the stuff that didn’t go so well,” Tamou replied.

“It seems like we are winning a couple, lose one, win another, lose another.

“If we want to be a top team we need to be more consistent than that.”

In amongst it all though is the impending birth of what is expected to be Tamou’s fourth son, which the prop admits has snuck up much quicker this time round.

“It’s all happening pretty quick. Our baby’s due about seven weeks away,” Tamou said.

“Got the three boys already and you’re not sort of been having to think about the baby yet while it’s in the tummy.

“But we know it’s going to be another boy, making it four in total.”

MIXED RESULTS FROM THE NRL SIDE AS OUR JUNIORS SHINE ON THE BIG STAGE Another fortnight where the Panthers have a win followed by a loss, as Penrith were unable to replicate their gritty win over the Bulldogs the previous Friday, when they came up short against a star-studded Cowboys outfit determined to kick– start their season, despite the vast support of a record crowd in Bathurst, last Friday night.

The Panthers were up against before the game losing Trent Merrin (finger) and even more so during the first half with the one-time premiership favourites, cutting the Panthers disjointed edge defences to pieces to lead 20-0 before heading into the break 20-6 up.

A typical second half fightback got the Panthers back into the game trailing by just four on two separate occasions as Peter Wallace (his 1st NRL career double in his 100th NRL game for the club) and club debutant Tyrone Phillips scored two tries a piece.

But the fightback was to no avail as the Cowboys hung on just to leave the home side lamenting a 2620 loss and what could have been had they started better in the first half, despite a mounting injury toll.

“You could never fault our courage and commitment,” Griffin told the media after the game.

“But we put ourselves in a position where it was always going to be hard.

“That first half we couldn’t have done any more to hand it over to them especially those opening 25-30 minutes.

“They are a quality opposition team. They were slick at the start and we couldn’t control that.

“We didn’t have the ruck control that we needed to get our line speed to them and they pulled us apart a few times.

“We certainly have a lot of injuries but you’ve got to go through periods of not going to have your best teams on the field.

“But I don’t want to sit here and make excuses about injuries and things like that.

“We had a side out there tonight that tried their backsides off undoubtedly (and) was capable of winning that game.

“Unfortunately we did it to ourselves in that first half, we handled their points far too easily.”

The loss to North Queensland came a week after a come-from behind 22-14 win over the Bulldogs, despite losing Peter Wallace (neck) pre-game and Dylan Edwards (shoulder) during it.

half and with Edwards back in the sheds, Penrith led by James Maloney and 100 NRL gamer, Tyrone Peachey, scored 20 of the last 22 points scored in the match to seal an important win.

Post-match Griffin was proud of his team’s resilience despite the latest injury setbacks.

“I thought that was a strong win for us as a club,” Griffin declared.

“Having a lot of changes every week, but to be able to be resilient and turn them away at 12-2 and get back in the game I thought was a real good sign for us as a team.

“We’re going through a bit of a patch (with injuries).

“I can’t remember (it being this bad) as such, particularly in the key positions with experienced players.

“But on the other side of adversity there’s opportunity and the guys that we’ve given a chance to, Hetherington and the two young hookers tonight, those guys are getting their opportunity.”

Penrith, with the advantage of having the bye last weekend have moved into third spot in the Intrust Super Premiership, a week after their impressive 30-6 win over St George-Illawarra in Wollongong, which featured the return from injury of Tyrone Phillips, who promptly scored a hat-trick in his first appearance for the club at any level.

This Sunday Penrith travel to North Sydney Oval to take on the ninth-placed Bears before returning to the same venue the following Sunday to play fourthplaced Western Suburbs Magpies.

INJURY PLIGHT GOES FROM BAD TO WORSE FOR PLUCKY PANTHERS The last fortnight has seen things go from bad to worse for the Penrith Panthers on the injury front.

Tim Browne (ruptured bowel) understandably called it a day on his 103 game NRL career despite having over a year still to run on his contract.

Then against the Bulldogs, fullback Dylan Edwards suffered a dislocated shoulder that will require seasonending surgery.

But it got worse last Friday night.

During warm ups, Trent Merrin was ruled out with a compound dislocation of the index finger in a tackle drill gone wrong with Sione Katoa.

At least Merrin’s surgery went well last Sunday and could yet play this Friday night.

But to make matters worse, Emerging Blues prop Moses Leota partially tore his pec, putting him out for six-eight weeks.

Amazingly Leota played during the second half with the injury, despite Kaide Ellis remaining on the bench for the entire game.

Not to mention the onematch suspension taken by Jack Hetherington after he was charged with dangerous contact to the head / neck of Shaun Fensom, his fifth nonrelated charge inside two years.

To top it off, Isaah Yeo (ribs) is in doubt for this Friday night’s away game against Newcastle.

In all the Panthers already minus the likes of Nathan Cleary, Sam McKendry, Josh Mansour, Waqa Blake and Corey Waddell, could be missing as many as TWELVE of their top 30 roster this week.

It could force the club to seek NRL approval to rely on development players outside of the 30-man roster, just to name a 21-man squad let alone face the possibility of some of them playing in this week’s game against Newcastle.

announced his retirement, he won’t be completely lost to the game as he focuses on running his rugby league academy and joining the Panthers’ media department.

Thankfully it hasn’t been all bad news on the injury front.

Utility Tyrone May (knee) is finally ready to return to the playing field, having been named among the reserves for this week’s clash with Newcastle.

In further good news, it is increasingly likely that Nathan Cleary (knee) will return for next Thursday’s Round 11 home game against the Wests Tigers.

Finally it was confirmed that Josh Mansour (cheekbone) could be back within three months (Round 19-20) after undergoing major facial surgery which did not require a bone graft.

In lower grades, cult hero Maika Sivo (hamstring) is set to play his first ISP game since Round One, this Sunday versus North Sydney.

However, the current injury toll is set to have a hidden effect on next season’s salary cap given Phil Gould’s revelations on his WWOS podcast recently that a similar injury crisis in 2015 bit hard into the 2016 salary cap.

With four rookies having already made their NRL debut in 2018, it could place unforeseen pressures on Penrith’s 2019 salary cap, if bonuses have been written into player contracts that reward NRL debuts and reaching mini NRL game milestones with such payments counting towards the 2019 cap.

The podcast also revealed that Kaide Ellis has finally agreed to upgraded terms that moves him into the 30-man roster.

Until the deal was done, Ellis

would not be able to take advantage of the cap discount to retain the winger if the roster’s current statusquo is maintained.

News Limited last weekend reported Penrith were looking to sign Manly winger Akuila Uate after it was suggested he and his player manager Darryl Mather, received a guided tour of the Panthers’ rugby league academy from Phil Gould.

The reported interest in Uate suggests that doubts remain over Penrith’s ability to retain off-contract winger Josh Mansour.

However Mansour’s future at Penrith may ultimately hinge on upcoming discussions with Sam McKendry after Gould also confirmed via the WWOS podcast that the club needed to talk to the injured prop about his future.

McKendry is the only player at the club who has achieved more than seven years service, which attracts a $200K long service allowance cap discount.

Despite the injuries for the home side, the Bathurst NRL experience continues to grow in stature after achieving its biggest ever NRL crowd, 10,287, 1,463 more than the previous record, set in 2014 against Cronulla.

But it’s more than just an annual game, with the Panthers devoting plenty of time to the Bathurst community including rugby league clinics for about 300 juniors and attendance at the Peachy/ Richardson Gala Day, where they spoke to the 400 juniors taking part in the gala.

All 16 NRL clubs including Penrith, will play in a specially designed jersey to celebrate this weekend’s Indigenous Round.

This year’s Indigenous jersey, designed by former player Glenn Liddiard, is similar in design to last year’s jersey, with the 2018 away jersey version featuring the totem of the Waradjuri region on the chest, as it pays tribute to the Indigenous history, geography and culture of the Penrith area and regional NSW whilst recognising Panthers’ commitment to fostering Rugby League talent in regional NSW. Let’s start with the first game of the round a week ago on Thursday between the Broncos and Dogs.

Broncos won on the bell through a penalty goal that was the right decision but as the Bulldogs will tell you, when you’re down you’re down. Nothing goes your way whilst in the middle of a slump.

Friday night saw the Rabbitohs’ resurgence step into overdrive against a Kalyn Ponga inspired Newcastle Knights. The Rabbits are looking ominous.

That same night in Bathurst (great turnout by the locals) saw the Panthers injury toll mount again when pre-game in-form prop Trent Merrin had a compound fracture of his finger! Ouch.

The Cowboys prevailed in what was a must-win for Paul Green’s men. Super Saturday saw the Raiders rip through a lethargic Titans team, the Warriors destroy the Tigers, who have now registered their 3rd straight loss, and the Sharks getting over the Eels in a nail-biter score of 22-20.

Last Sunday saw two contrasting yet just as enthralling encounters. The top of the table Dragons were out to prove once and for all that they are indeed a premiership threat, boy did they what! Up against last year’s premiers the Melbourne Storm, the Dragons were never headed; coming away emphatically to chalk up a 34-14 victory, in turn announcing their superiority.

the Roosters and Sea Eagles. In a desperate display the Roosters came away with a much-needed 22-20 win to leave Manly on the bottom rung of the ladder with the Bulldogs and Eels below them on points differential only.

Things I learned from this round just gone?

Dragons could have up to 6 origin players this year.

Marty Taupau played one of the best games in a losing team I’ve seen.

Kalyn Ponga is the best young prospect since Brad Fittler burst into the scene in the late 80’s.

Victor Radley is pound for pound the best hitter in the comp, Dean Whare is not far behind him.

The 3rd tackler in on a tackle zeroing in on the lower leg of a ball runner must be stamped out before someone is seriously injured.

The Panthers are in good shape considering their horrendous injury toll, when all are back on deck they’ll be mighty hard to beat!
