Hi Chris and welcome to NE Magazine, for the few readers who must be living in a cave somewhere and don’t know who you are how about giving th em a quick l ow- down o n yourself?

- Hello! Can’t help but think I’m writing your interview introduction for you here, oh well… I’m a stand-up comedian from South Shields and I’m also a bit of an actor now and then… but mainly a comedian… that might not come across as well as it should in print form, but I am.

So there.

At the moment it’s hard not seeing you on the TV when we switch it on as you’re everywhere, but what has been the highlight for you so far?

- Not everywhere though am I? If you turn on QVC and I’m selling a frying pan, just assume you’ll find me floating face down in a river very soon. The highlight for me so far was probably being in Hebburn. Since starting comedy I always wanted to try my hand at being in a sitcom too so I was over the moon to do one with my mate and so close to my heart, and I got to work with Vic Reeves.

I know you had a bit of a crazy time with fans wanting pics and autographs when you were having a few drinks in a South Shields bar recently, how are you finding this, does it put you off going out?

- Not at all. Any person in that position who has been on TV or whatever and people want photos (I’m trying my best not to say celebrity here!) who pretends they hate the attention is a liar. You don’t go for a career on TV because you don’t want anyone to notice you. As long as I’m not eating or having a shit when you want a photo then it’s no problem at all… I meant, like on the toilet, not just in the middle of the dancefloor.

Have you had any weird fan requests or incidents?

- Not really. The odd person will show up to a gig with my face on a T-Shirt, or bake me a cake, or send me a dead animal in the post but other than that it’s just photos and autographs. A little kid in Hebburn when we were filming asked me to sign his micro scooter… that was a bit weird.

As well as being a bit of a regular on Celebrity Juice, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8 out of 10 Cats you are now starring in the North East based sitcom Hebburn, how did that come about?

- My mate and fellow comedian Jason Cook decided to write a sitcom about the town he was from, Hebburn, and he actually wrote me a little side part which he named after me. But when it came to being made the BBC asked me to read for the main character, and when I got it, Jason took the part that he’d written for me! It came about so gradually that I didn’t really realise the enormity of being lead role in a BBC2 sitcom until I saw the advert on TV. I nearly passed out.

How has the response for Hebburn been so far?

- Overwhelmingly positive.

And we just won Best Drama at the RTS North awards too. And we’ve got a second series!

You are now embarking on your biggest tour to date, how do you feel about this?

- Yeah incredible! It’s an extension of my last tour, Feeling Lucky. I did 60+ dates in 2012 but the demand for tickets was so high and people enjoyed the show so much that I’m doing another 40 odd dates this year in much bigger venues. I can’t wait to get back out on the road.

Are there any venues on the tour that you are looking forward to playing or any you’re quite nervous about?

- The Theatre Royal in Newcastle. I absolutely can’t wait. I used to watch panto there when I was a kid. I’m

Beyond Vinyl in Newcastle have done it again with the Sunset Sons!

November saw Newcastle record store and mini music venue, Beyond Vinyl, pull in yet another full house for one of their Beyond Sessions, where they get a singer or band to perform in store and giving the fans a chance to meet them afterwards. This time it was the turn of indie band Sunset Sons, who have a very famous

north east connection, with drummer Jed Laidlaw being the son of Lindisfarne’s drummer Ray Laidlaw.

Sunset Sons are Rory Williams (lead vocals, keys), Jed Laidlaw (drums) and Pete Harper (bass).

Their appearance was for the launch of their new album ‘Blood Rush Déjà Vu’ and anyone that pre-ordered a copy from Beyond Vinyl received a ticket to their intimate instore gig, which was

incredible. Now if you have never heard of Sunset Sons before then I suggest you pop on Spotify or youtube and have a listen, they have been likened to Kings Of Leon, so if you like them, you will LOVE Sunset Sons!!!

They played a selection of songs from ‘Blood Rush Déjà Vu’ as well as a few fan favourites from their first album ‘Very Rarely Say Die’ which they released back in 2016. It was great to see the fans

singing along to the new songs from the album that only came out the day before, but when you listen to the catchy songs yourself you will see why, you can’t help but sing along!

Seeing a more stripped down version of the songs played in such an intimate way really was incredible, as you cannot get a better experience than this. Usually you are one of the hundreds or thousands packed into a venue or arena and depending on where you stand or sit you may hardly even be able to see the singer/ band perform. To get to meet them usually requires buying a VIP meet and greet ticket, so for Sunset Sons to give their fans the opportunity to be one of a small number of people invited to watch them perform from a meter or two away and then to chat with them afterwards really was a big deal. So hats off to the band and also to Beyond owner David McGovern for making this happen, he has yet again shown that it is not about making money but giving his customers a truly unforgettable experience, he is showing other businesses that you do not have to milk your customers, if you look after them then you will create a loyalty with them, as shown with these events as they are always packed out.

As soon as they walked through the door they were all for the fans, chatting away, posing for photos and just loving the fact they were there. They are truly humbled by their fans and the response to their music, which was great to see, as some bands/ singers forget about the fans and the fact that without them, they would be nothing, so it really is refreshing to see that connection is still strong, that they are not too big to mingle with the people that put them there.

was an absolute pleasure, I told him I was loving the new album and he was genuinely interested in hearing my thoughts, asking which songs I liked and why.

We got chatting about music in general and he was telling me a story about the time he was recording in a famous studio and he was star struck being in a place that so many icons had used, saying the walls had autographs dotted all over, seeing Freddie Mercury’s signature and knowing he played there was surreal. I commented saying I experienced something similar as I had visited Abbey Road earlier in the year and felt that myself. “I’m so jealous, I’ve never been there before” was his reply, when I

told him my daughter Lainie got to play the piano used by Lennon and McCartney, “no way, you better have videos I can see?”. He watched them and was genuinely interested, asking about my daughter and how long she has been playing.

I explained that due to being poorly she wasn’t able to attend today as she really wanted to see them as it was Jed’s Dad Ray who had told us about Sunset Sons last year. Rory even went out of his way looking up a cream he knew of that might help my daughter, then asked if he could record a message for her, I said to dedicate a song to her and I’d

record it as she would love that, so he dedicated Superman to her towards the end of the set, the fact that he did that and made sure not to forget really does show you the kind of caring and genuine guy he is, really going above and beyond when he really didn’t have to. You can see the video of Superman recorded at Beyond Vinyl featuring photo’s by Victoria Ling, David McGovern and NE HERE Jed and Pete were really funny after the gig had finished, seeing them having a laugh with the fans, even winding a young couple up, who were actually

there on their first date, which was so funny. Again showing how down to earth they are. Pete took great pleasure in doodling and personalising a few of the autographs when they were signing people’s records after the gig. Pete was amused when one customer had to explain that his name was spelt John but without the H, so he just put a cross through the H for Jon Bell’s signed record, I even got a bandana around the R of my middle name Rambo.

Seeing the guys take the time to really chat with their fans, answering questions, posing for

photos and just having fun really was great to see, it added to the whole experience, again showing that David has got the Beyond Sessions nailed, he is really giving his customers something they will never forget, so make sure you follow Beyond Vinyl on social media as there are more sessions coming in the new year!

Sunset Sons also played the Riverside in Newcastle as part of their ‘Blood Rush Déjà Vu’ Tour at the end of November, this was a full band set up and they did not disappoint! It wasn’t as intimate as the Beyond Session gig, but the full gig gives them a chance to really let loose and rock out, blasting out all of their hits to an appreciative crowd who sang them back to the band. This is a band that not only has the talent and the fantastic songs to back it up with, but the genuine personality to go with it, these guys seriously need to hit the big time. In a world of one hit wonders and reality shows taking away from genuine talent, it will be a hard slog for them, but if anyone can do it, it is Sunset Sons! So do yourself a favour, check out their music, give them a follow on their socials and support them by buying their music, because they really do deserve the support and to make it BIG! I for one, can’t wait for the next North East gig as I’ll be there singing along, lets also hope it’s not as long a wait for album #3.

Sultry Irish festivities head to Sage as Cara Dillon takes us Upon A Winter’s Night This December let the stunning, vocals of Ireland’s fair folk maiden, Cara Dillon, take you on it’s annual, festive ride Upon A Winter’s Night, as, along with husband Sam Lakeman, they take in Sage Gateshead.

Most see the festive season as being the most wonderful time of the year and for Cara and her family the feeling is the same with this year’s tour being

somewhat smaller than in recent years; but that won’t stop music lovers heading out on those cold, winter nights for their own, festive fill.

“We absolutely love going out at Christmas time,” began Cara ahead of their festive tour which will see them begin in Buxton on December 7, before heading to Bromsgrove (8), Bury St. Edmunds (10), Milton Keynes (11), London (12), Farnham (13), Cheltenham (14), and Leeds (15) before finishing at Sage Gateshead on December 16.

“It’s been a massive part of our family’s December for the past three years now.

“This year though we’ve shortened the tour as we wanted to enjoy some festivities ourselves (Cara and Sam will be appearing just the nine times this December).

“Every Christmas gig we’ve done though has been sold out, which I still can’t believe, but the shows we do are very special ones and we genuinely go out there, on the stage, and enjoy ourselves.”

album of the same name, Cara released Upon A Winter’s Night (http://www.caradillon. co . u k /a l b u m s / u p o n - w i nte rs night) in 2016, an eleven-track masterpiece beginning with the albums’ title track and consists other tracks like The Holly and The Ivy, Standing My Christmas Tree and The Darkest Midnight.

It’s one that was described by the BBC as being “an instant Christmas classic,” and The Independent saying “there’s

entertainment aplenty,’ Cara’s festive showings are certainly not to be missed, The Daily Echo summed it up when adding that it’s “a reminder of the real meaning of the festive season, uplifting and inspirational.”

The same of which can be said of a her career dating back before her solo career took over in the early noughties, a one which dates back to her childhood back in Dungiven, Northern Ireland and the band in which she met

her now husband-producer Sam Lakeman.

“I really just fell into all this,” explained Cara of how her career started out.

“I used to play music every day with my friends and thought that it would be a good, easy way in which to make money.

“There was pure enjoyment being up on the stage, absolutely no pressure at all, so I thought I’d just go out there and just do it and see what happens.

“The music in which I perform is your Irish traditional folk and Sam is from a similar background as well.”

At that time, when Cara met Sam and they left Equation, the band which the pair were in prior to flying solo, Sam’s thought’s, akin to Cara’s, was that the two factions were heading in differing directions.

“When I first met him (Sam), at what, 19, it didn’t take us long to discover that we would work rather well together,” smiled Cara of something which is now glaringly obvious.

“Essentially, now, we are actually a duo (when on stage), however, we made the decision years ago that it would be myself that was at the forefront of it all.

“He likes to be just grafting away behind the scenes and that suits us, works well for us both really.”

The folk sensation however has remained very true to those Irish roots that have served her so well, irrespective of where she, and husband Sam, may be.

Music that has been taken to by many very well during what has been a near twenty-year, award-winning, solo career, Cara continuing to thrive both in, and out of the studio.

A self-titled debut, ‘Cara Dillon,’ was released back in 2001, whilst her latest, ‘Wanderer,’ arrived accidentally, two years ago, with another release quietly simmering away in the background.

Although spontaneous, Cara has continued to take everything in her stride, pushing boundaries with her music even as far afield as......China!

back in 2001 was, quite randomly, and surprisingly, picked up by followers in the Far East.

The Chinese going as far as including the album, ‘Cara Dillon,’ into their National Curriculum, it being just as surprising then to Cara as the production and release of her last album was in 2017.

“We never had any idea that here was any kind of following simmering away in China,” smiled Cara.

“Upon knowing this though we just knew we had to try and go over there for a few shows but when we did, that first show that we performed, there was over 2,000 people there.

“The music has grown quite rapidly in China and we’ve been over four times now; it’s a real commitment going all the way over there though, but it’s worth it, a truly brilliant experience.”

It all adds to the wonder that is Cara Dillon, after all, seven albums and numerous nominations and awards can’t be wrong and to be honest, they’re

not – the sensation that is Cara Dillon is just that.

“Cara Dillon is a rare and extraordinary talent,” states RTE. “She sings with a passion that is evident in the depth of her content, lyrically illustrating the scars of the human heart.

“There are few on this island to

Speaking of his ‘masterpiece,’ Danny said: “It will almost be one year to the day that my Dad passed away when we sat in the VUE Gateshead, for the concept screening of Moreland’s Firm.

“He was my biggest supporter as a writer and never faltered in his encouragement for me to follow my dreams.

“I actually signed as a singersongwriter with a Manhattanbased company many years ago and unfortunately I was a little too immature to use that opportunity wisely.

“In the most part though, Dad was responsible for sending out all of the material to these companies and doing what I really should have been doing for myself.”

Having learnt, often the hard way, from his father’s knowledge and wisdom, Danny is well aware of the assistance the Marie Curie Hospice in Elswick afforded Tommy in those final days.

It is because of that Danny will be donating all proceeds from ‘Until I Do’ to the hospice adding: “He passed away this time last year after a short but brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

“The Marie Curie Hospice in Elswick, and its staff, made his final days the very best they could be.

“My Mother, brothers, and myself can’t speak highly enough of the care that was afforded to him.

“Dad would have been super proud to see the Moreland’s Firm project coming to life and we will be donating all of the proceeds from the release of ‘Until I Do’ to the Hospice in Elswick, in his name.”

Not only is the mini-series packed with stellar names, the band in which Danny Cox has put together for the title track is similar in that nature.

Alongside Danny, who has both

penned the track, and provides the vocals, he has ‘drafted in’ backing vocals from the up-and-coming Katie Cowie, drums are provided

by Jason Osborne, as well Smoove (Smoove & Turrell fame), Liam Fender (Brother Joe, McDade and Jim Hornsby), Si Stephenson (Carma), Michael Bailey (Peter Donegan Band and The Caffreys) and the legendary ‘saxophonist with soul,’ Johnny ‘Blue Hat’ Davis (Sam Fender and Groove Train) whilst also being produced by Matt Hall of the iconic band, Little Comets.

Using a tagline of ‘Tyneside Will Never Be The Same,’ and with both a screen, and musical accompaniment of such magnitude,

Danny Cox’s Moreland’s Firm can’t be nothing but an astounding success.

Being released on all major platforms, ‘Until I Do’ is available now whilst the inaugural viewing of Moreland’s Firm (Produced by North East Films and directed by Ferson) took place at VUE Gateshead on the night of November 28.

Gal pals release charity single

Christmas

A trio of the UK’s most celebrated female singer-songwriters have released a single this festive season in aid of deaf children’s charity, Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK).

‘Gal Pals’ Beverley Craven, Judie Tzuke and Julia Fordham have resumed their Woman to Woman collaboration on a new song, released on November 29, (downloads, hard copies dispatched on December 9 and raise more for the charity)

entitled ‘Christmas Day’.

Touring twice, as Woman to Woman (selling over 35,000 tickets and 15,000 albums), over the past twelve months, Beverley, Judie and Julia became understandably very close to each other, so, when the former received a call asking about a possible song for AVUK she was in no doubt as to what to do next.

Best known for her 1991, top three hit single, Promise Me, the multi-million album selling musician said: “My partner

received a phone call from a relative a few months ago asking if I’d be interested in writing a Christmas song for the children to sing at AVUK. “So, I sat down at the piano, with a long list of Christmassy words, and tried to come up with something simple and easy to learn.

“It soon became obvious that we could raise more awareness of the charity by making it a Woman to Woman production and then have the kids involved as a children’s choir too.”

As with the old adage, ‘great oaks grow from little acorns,’ similar can be attributed the ‘Christmas Day’ single, Bev realising her ‘gal pals’ could bring more to it, adding: “So, what had started off as something quite small, this is now going to be our new Woman to Woman song because, when I was writing it, and it only took me a couple of hours, I started thinking that Jude and Jules’ harmonies would sound really great.

“And with all the proceeds from sales of the single going to AVUK, I’m actually really, really excited about it.”

The challenge of putting something of this magnitude together was overcome by the involvement of producer/ arranger Grant Mitchell, whose vision it was to create a production reminiscent of something that you might find in a Disney film.

“Actually, the song reminds me of Julie Andrews’ My Favourite Things!” says Beverley, whilst

her ‘Gal Pals’ Julia and Judie, are just as excited.

“Beverley has written an absolute cracker of a Christmas song,” added Julia.

“I love it and I am so delighted that the blend of our Woman To Woman voices are being put to such good use.

“AVUK is doing extraordinary work for profoundly deaf children helping them get the best from their cochlear implants and hearing aids and you can hear just what a great job they are doing by how splendidly the children sound singing along on this magical track.”

Judie meanwhile said: “I am so excited to be able to support this amazing charity.

“The children that I met were so confident and happy and my granddaughter, who joined them in the choir, could not believe that the children were deaf and yet their performance

and speech was incredible - and she loved the flashing light of the head piece that some of the children were wearing!”

The children’s choir were recorded on a Saturday afternoon in September at Beverley’s home studio, suitably decorated for the occasion. Giggling she added: “Yes, I had over sixty parents and children round to my place, we had a thoroughly enjoyable singa-long and the result is really quite moving”.

“Granted some were a little shy, and others, with the treats my partner provided, were a bit hyper but you know what, it was fun and their part on the track really does sound marvellous.”

Eleven profoundly deaf children and their siblings appear singing on the track; the children are all currently on, or have previously been on, AVUK’s specialist early intervention programme.

The charity as a whole teaches deaf children under the age of five to learn to listen and speak

through highly specialised Auditory Verbal therapy.

The AVUK children were also joined by pupils from Brushwood Junior School and Newtown Infants School based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

Looking ahead to the festive release, Anita Grover, Chief Executive of AVUK added: “We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to have worked with Beverley, Judie and Julia and are incredibly grateful for their support in helping more deaf children learn to listen and speak.”

A festive number with a difference, the release also includes a special sing-a-long bonus track, and it comes in a wonderfully decorated Christmas card – just don’t be fooled by those smiling faces on the front!

Actress releases debut children’s story in aid of diabetes charity “We are strong people as Type 1’s and we put a smile on our faces and carry on, as do so many other people with different autoimmune conditions.”

Darlington actress Jade Byrne, 34, has seen her path as an actress, and, last month a children’s author, continue on its somewhat differing path to what she may have intended when she started out.

Able to count screen credits in programmes like Inspector George Gently, Mount Pleasant, The Dumping Ground and most recently BBC One’s, Casualty, Jade’s acting path took a turn two years ago when, whilst scouting for her hometown’s Jabberwocky Market, whom she joined in late-2015, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, she started penning Pricks.

She’d had stage experience as well as screen credits before, first appearing as Claire in John Retallack’s adaptation of Richard Milward’s Apples in 2010, but to write, and take to the stage, something of her own, was something completely different.

“I’ve always wanted to act but I never thought I’d actually write anything myself,” enthused Jade.

“Having worked with Jabberwocky

Market over the past few years, I became inspired to write something myself, I wanted to create my own small-scale touring piece.

“When attending places like Edinburgh Fringe, I find myself totally inspired by other people’s performances, so I started writing down ideas of what I could possibly create.

“It (Pricks) came to me in Edinburgh, I was having a glass of wine, and then I realised my blood sugar was low, I was having a hypo and then it clicked. I love talking to people about Type 1 Diabetes, I love educating people but ultimately entertaining people, Type 1 Diabetes is what my show needs to be about.”

Thus Pricks was born and, four national tours later and an Edinburgh run, with more tours in 2020, Jade and her team are working tirelessly to not only promote her debut children’s story, Daisy Donald, but to continue to educate

about Type 1, something Jade was diagnosed with thirty years ago this month, and recently celebrated at a thirtieth dia-versary fundraiser in aid of the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

A ‘Celebrity Ambassador’ for the JDRF, as well as being a DEXCOM Warrior and an INSULET Podvocate, Jade continues to promote, educate, and fund raise in the name of Type 1.

“Us as Type 1’s need to use our knowledge to educate people,” continued Jade.

“That’s why I created Pricks, in order to make people laugh, cry, and ultimately learn. If we don’t teach them who will?”

“People don’t know how it feels not to be able to do anything without having to make sure your blood sugars are right, your insulin is correct and that you can actually survive the task you are about to undertake.”

Type 1 diabetics, as Jade is, have so much that they need to keep an eye on throughout their day-today lives, from testing their levels before they start to drive then pulling over two hours later and testing again, to testing morning and night, before every meal, every exercise, when they feel ‘funny,’

nothing can be overlooked.

“We have to work out our insulin based on our insulin to carb ratio (taking one unit of insulin for a certain amount of carbohydrates),” added Jade.

“Therefore we have to calculate the carbs in every meal too.

“They (non-type 1’s) don’t know that a hypo makes us feel horrendous, that we are shaky, confused, so sweaty, so drained, so hungry, and that, afterwards, it feels like the worst hangover in the world.

“And they don’t know about the dread that comes with the aftermath, the worries of what I have

said, what I have done, who has seen it?

“The absolute mortified feeling, the embarrassment that you haven’t managed to keep yourself controlled.”

Not only with all the issues they face on a daily basis, Type 1’s also have the ongoing fear of sight loss, the potential loss of feet or other limbs, even kidney, liver and other organ issues.

Seemingly an ongoing battle Jade deals with it the only way she can, by sticking to the rules and doing it all with a beautiful smile on her face whilst not blaming anyone for the misconceptions within society, stating it’s more down to how people are educated, or not, more than anything else, and that the media rarely touch on the topic.

What about her debut children’s offering though and what can literary lovers expect?

Entitled, simply, ‘Daisy Donald,’ it’s a children’s book of rhyme focusing on a young girl who, thanks to her parents, wears a superhero cape daily to fight off an invisible monster, one which turns out to be Type 1 Diabetes.

Illustrated by a fellow Darlington creative in Hayley Smith, Daisy Donald is an unkempt yet love-

able, ginger-haired, dungaree dress-wearing child.

“I’ve written a children’s book because I’ve met a lot of people with a lack of understanding about Type 1 and also learnt from those that it’s not their fault that they’re ignorant to what it is, so if we’re going to teach people about it, let’s do it a fun way and from a young age.” Jade explained.

“I really love children’s books, especially ones that rhyme, so Daisy Donald had to rhyme; I find those type of books much more fun to read.

“The illness Daisy has is like a monster, a monster that can be hard to fight and she has to try so hard to tame it.

“Daisy’s monster, Type 1 Diabetes, makes her really strong, super strong, because she has to work hard to get through each day and this strength makes her a superhero in her own right.”

The Star Wars Saga is finally coming to an end, it’s a story 42 years in the making and Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker will see the final instalment come to our screens this December.

The Last Jedi may have had mixed reviews from fans with them being split 50/50 on whether it was a great movie or a terrible movie, but regardless, you just know that audiences will pack out cinemas all around the world to see how the story will finally end.

Disney have upset a lot of fans by declaring all of the stories written over the years as no longer cannon, but have they done enough to win back those fans by bringing back some of the fan favourites including Emperor Palpatine who we have seen and heard in the trailers?

Coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8 the region’s Lucinda Grange (formerly of Hartlepool, now New York City) saw some of her finest work, from the project ‘Backwards and in High Heels,’ included in the Donna Karan – Urban Zen exhibition in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.

Beginning on March 8 and running through until April 7, Ms. Grange’s most prized project, entitled as ‘Dancing with the Stars’ included in the exhibition ran by the ArtLead Her platform, a vision founded by Mashinda Tirfere.

Supporting and promoting only female artists, ArtLead Her aims to help level the field in the art world, where the gender bias is very strong and, being part of what is Women’s History Month will help envelope that consensus.

Speaking of her prized project, ‘Backwards and in High Heels,’ Lucinda said: “It is a quote in reference to Ginger Rodgers.

“Fred Astaire, her male dance partner, would get more fame, fortune and attention than she did, yet she did everything he did, backwards and in high heels.

“This project started with two selfportraits on the Chrysler Building (Midtown Manhattan, New York) and gradually grew as I photographed women I know and admire in places you wouldn’t expect

to see anyone - let alone a woman, looking strong and extravagant in a dress!

“The aim of this project was to question stereotypes women are often subjected to, and instead highlight the strength and power

of these women.”

To be included within the exhibition, for Lucinda, is something she is excited about and follows immediately after her solo exhibition, ‘City Cross-Section’ which was held at the Lyle O. Reitzel Contemporary Art Gallery and finished late-February.

In the new exhibition at the Urban Zen Lucinda exhibited an image, ‘King Woman,’ which depicts Ingrid Silva, lead dancer for the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

“In this picture, Ingrid is on point on the ladder of a water tower on a NYC rooftop.

“Ingrid grew up in Brazil, a very humble beginning, and now she’s the dance company’s top dancer, traveling the world, following her

passion.

“She is now performing to crowds of thousands despite the many obstacles that have been in her way.

“Not only is she Brazilian, she is also black and petite, very far from those who one might expect to see as the lead dancer.

“Her sheer willpower, dedication and determination got her all the way from living in Brazil, to being one of the top dancers in this city.

“My aim was to capture the feeling of this inspiring person and her story in this one single image.”

Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It is celebrated during March in the U.S. the U.K. and Australia, coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8.

{Lucinda Grange} Lucinda Grange – One More Time: Looking back on 2019 It’s been an incredible privilege spending the past year looking through life’s lens with urban photographer extraordinaire, Lucinda Grange, as she’s afforded a unique, special insight into what has been an incredible journey.

Originating in Hartlepool, Northern England, Lucinda has spent the past couple of years on America’s Eastern coast and, in 2019 alone, has seen some incredible

sights. Here, in her last piece for NE Online Artist of the Year, she looks back at what has been an interesting year behind the lens.

“It’s been an amazing year, and being awarded the ‘NE Online Magazine Artist of the Year’ was a big part of that.

“With each interview and issue I’ve been able to reflect on different parts of my work and achievements, and, with this being the last issue of the year, it’s great to reflect on what I’ve shot, enjoyed,

explored and accomplished during this past year as well.

“It’s been an amazing year for travel inside of America.

“Until this last year I’d only really spent time on the east coast, as well as a couple of short trips to Minneapolis.

“Now I have been able to get to the west coast, visiting LA, San Francisco, Chicago, and even going to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert; swimming in rivers and

lakes, watching the sun rise over the desert having not slept for two days, sleeping under the water towers on New York City rooftops.

Burning Man is an annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in north-west Nevada which sees the area transformed into a temporary city and takes its name from its fiery finale, the symbolic ritual burning of a wooden effigy known simply as, ‘The Man.’ Now with a specific theme since the mid-nineties, Burning Man first came to light in 1986 – the last three themes being that of Metamorphoses (2019), I, Robot (2018) and Radical Ritual (2017).

“I’ve started the year with a solo

show, followed by another solo, and then a group show.

“And that’s only to name those I’m able to share right now.”

“Exhibiting with The Other Gallery, Lyle O’Reitzel and ArtLeadHer all in New York (of which can be read in an earlier issue).

For those unfamiliar, the Hell Gate Bridge, or the New York Connecting Railroad Bridge and runs freight between Astoria, Queens, and Randalls and Wards Islands, Manhattan carrying two tracks of Amtrak’s north-eastern corridor, work on which began in 1912 and it was officially opened in March 1917.

“Due to traveling around America more conventionally this year, I’ve not explored as much as many of the past year, but I’ve made what I did do, count.

“The highlights have included hopping a freight train across the Hell Gate Bridge during the day, climbing the Hell Gate Bridge by night, three course meals by candle light on abandoned trains with close friends, but to name a few.

“2020 promises to be another exciting year.

“As well as continuing to explore more of America, celebrating its architecture and infrastructure in an unconventional way, I also plan on spending much more time

exploring Europe.

“2020 should be amazing, and filled with at least as much beautiful scenery as 2019.”

“Thank you NE Online Magazine for awarding me Artist of the Year.”

“I’m looking at spending more time climbing buildings and mountains, camping underground in the catacombs, and above ground in campsites, watching the sunset from rooftops, but also from hammocks slung between two trees on a beautiful beach.

When it comes to 90’s music one of the stand out acts has to be Lighthouse Family, you just couldn’t go anywhere without hearing one of their ‘Bangers’ like Lifted, Ocean Drive, Raincloud or High to name a few, as a DJ I often played their remixes too. Sadly I was never in a position to see them live, but that never stopped me listening to them, in fact I can hand on heart say that their music has never been off my playlist since 1995 and I don’t think a single week has gone by that I have not heard at least one song since then. So when they announced a new album was dropping earlier in the year, 18 years after their last one, you could say I was pretty damn happy. Not only that but a tour as well, hell, there was no way I was missing them this time.

I was with my 15 year old daughter Lainie when the album was announced and she thought it was hilarious how excited I was. I was telling her how amazing they

were and how their music was the soundtrack to my life, getting me through some tough times and cheering me up. She asked to have a look at some of the songs I loved to see why I was so excited, so I played Lifted and Ocean Drive for her. She then went home and looked them up herself, safe to say she was hooked! She started listening to them loving how happy and infectious the songs were, how meaningful the lyrics were and mesmerized by Tunde’s voice. She

was discovering them at roughly the same age I was when I first heard them, except she had all of the albums at once. She even went through a tough stay in hospital over Easter and it was Lighthouse Family that helped get her through it.

So when the tour dates were announced it was fate, we both had to be there. On the day the tickets went on sale I was on the phone just before the ticket lines opened

determined to get good seats for us, the staff at the O2 City Hall Newcastle were fantastic giving me ticket options and they mentioned VIP Meet & Greet tickets… no need to say anything else, SOLD. All we had to do now was wait for the album ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ to drop. They teased us with a few songs like ‘My Salvation’ and ‘Light On’ and we knew we were in for a treat, the songs were unmistakably Lighthouse Family, they were fresh, yet familiar, for me it felt like I had been transported back to the late 90’s. When the album eventually landed it really was like Christmas, the excitement of unwrapping it and playing it for the first time and I was not disappointed at all. Every time I listened to it my favourite song changed, plus it was great to hear the classics again with a bit of a tweak to them.

I was invited to join a facebook group called “Our Lighthouse Family” and what an amazing group this is. Full of likeminded fans all sharing their love of Lighthouse Family, everything from discussions on peoples favourite songs to people opening up and saying why Lighthouse Family mean so much to them, plus plenty of photos and videos shared too. Not only that but if there was any LF news or articles everyone was quick to post it in the group for other fans to see, with some even trying to help other fans find tickets or even help with lifts to gigs so no one missed out. It is great to see so many fans together, people talking who would otherwise never have spoken, seeing them trying to help each other out in various ways, all brought together because of Paul and Tunde, something I’m sure the guys are

proud to see.

It was no surprise that O2 City Hall Newcastle sold out, they have even added another date in Feb 2020…and yes I will be attending that one too. To say I was nervous would be an understatement as they say you should never meet your heroes. I had briefly spoken to Paul and Tunde online when they hosted a live chat, but I was

about to meet them in person. The crowd was a mix of all ages, from people in their 30’s through to some in their 70’s, though Lainie was by far the youngest person at the gig, which is no surprise seeing as their last album was released 2 years before she was born.

We were given our VIP lanyards and taken into the hall to await Paul and Tunde. We were all sat in a row of seats and told we would take it in turns to get a few photos taken and have a quick chat with them both. It was great to see the happiness on people’s faces when they chatted to them, passing on comments including how much the album meant to them through to how many times they had seen them. Paul and Tunde really were humbled by all of the comments, even saying how great it was to hear such kind words. You had families having individual photos and group photos, couples who

shared a love for LF and getting to tell them how their music was the soundtrack to their relationship.

Sadly, due to lots of germs doing the rounds we had all been told no hugs or kisses and we all rubbed some antibacterial cream in our hands, though one lady shocked Tunde by going in for a kiss and cuddle before pulling away at the last second laughing saying ‘don’t worry, I’m just winding you up, I know I’m not allowed to kiss you’ to which everyone burst out laughing. It was just a fun friendly atmosphere. When it was our turn to get photos taken I was a bit star struck, I know I mumbled something about how much their music meant to me and Lainie, to which they thanked us both, I did also say I wanted to get them in the magazine, which struck a bell with Paul, as he must have remembered me from asking them both online, he said for me to message a mutual friend of ours to arrange it, so fingers crossed we can finally feature Paul and Tunde in NE.

I have to give a massive shout out to support act Georgie, she was superb, her vocals were incredible and she played both the guitar and keyboard for her set of original songs, which were great, she really hit it off with the toon crowd when she told them a little story before

singing about a subject close to her heart…booze, with her song Booze Money. She was entertaining and really held the crowd, her songs were fantastic and it’s safe to say she made plenty of new fans at that gig, it was a nice touch when she stood at the merch stall to sign copies of her album and pose for photos. The show itself was just unbelievable, one of the most emotional gigs I have ever been too, I actually found myself tearing up during the first few songs as it was a long time coming for me and it really was a bucket list moment getting to see a band that meant so much and helped me through some tough times. Tunde’s vocals are still spot on, even after all of these years, he has still got it. Both Paul and Tunde interacted with the crowd, telling various stories inbetween songs, saying how Newcastle was always a homecoming gig for them as Lighthouse Family was born in the North East, something that was not lost on the crowd who went mental showing their appreciation. They told us a few heartfelt stories behind some of the songs which added a new depth to them. Paul even joked with the crowd about the ‘Bangers’ they had written as he got the crowd hyped before playing the

classics that literally had the whole crowd on their feet and dancing and singing along to them.

It really was a party atmosphere at times, with Tunde wowing the crowds with his dance moves, his hips had quite a lot of the ladies drooling, in fact Strictly Come Dancing should be looking to him for the next series, you heard that here first! Paul and Tunde really did not disappoint, the set list was a mix of old and new songs, the crowd sang along to each and every single one, all so happy to have the boys back. Knowing I will get to see them again in February is great, though the gig really can’t come quick enough as it was such an amazing night, if anyone wants to experience an amazing gig then honestly try and get your hands on a ticket, you really won’t be disappointed!

2019, What A Year It Has Been!

way over the past few years.

Surprisingly some twelve months have elapsed since the publication of, via Britain’s Next Bestseller, my last book, Cruising to Glory: The Jon-Lewis Dickinson Story.

“I mean, three years ago this kinda stuff was still a dream, five years plus I’d have said to get lost.”

That was on December 14 last year and since that fantastic, packed out evening at Nine Bar, St. James’ Park (thanks to Steven White for the photos), I can only have imagined , dreamed, as to how well the following year, the last year as it is now, would have been.

In chatting with an old friend last month, and I’ll say it word for word what I said in regards being asked about my recent ‘success’ that: “Granted I’ve come a long

in travelling to New York back in October 2017 changed me, and for the better; it instilled a belief in me that I’ve not really had, the trust and belief of others, those that don’t even know me, was an immense feeling, and it spurred

me on more than I thought it would.

Eighteen months ago I took a plunge in flying solo, a brave and bold move for me that’s for sure, more as I knew how difficult the media industry can be in this day and age, but, I was prepared to give it my best shot. I had a few things lined up initially, finishing Jon’s book and working with Swindon’s folk musician, Rob Richings being foremost and which eased me through the latter stages of the year.

Around the time of those two I also began writing my next book, yes there’s another book, well actually there’ll be at least two more, in the offing. This one though, the seeds were planted in the summer of 2018 with the first, official interview being conducted in the late November when I was in Swindon. At the time of going to

press the book is approximately at its halfway point and that’s about all I can say on it (look out for 2020 press announcement, probably around the summer, ahead of a potential 2021 release).

Back to the nitty gritty and the daily slog, it’s a good job I love

doing what I do that’s for sure as it has definitely been one of those years and one thing has certainly led to another.

What started off in late 2018, with my gate-crashing the end of the first leg of the Woman to Woman tour (Beverley Craven, Judie

Tzuke and Julie Fordham) which in turn led to working the press for Vonda Shepard & Sharon Corr, Leo Sayer, Woman to Woman II, Kiki Dee & Carmelo Luggeri, and a Christmas single Christmas Day, in aid of deaf children’s charity AVUK (read more in this issue of NE Online) – more of the same next year me thinks.

A mass ray of sunshine over 2019 came whilst working the PR for the amazing trooper that is Jade Byrne, the actress and now children’s author with Daisy Donald (again, read more about that in this issue).

I’ve known Jade for around five years now having met when I was studying the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism at Darlington College and she was putting on events with Darlington FC. We kept in touch, thankfully, and when the opportunity arose to work with her throughout this year, who was

I to say no.

She’s as infectious as they come, great to be around, and very easy to both work and get on with; so, this year I’ve covered press for two tours of Pricks, her one-woman, biographical stage play of her life with Type 1 Diabetes, and for her debut children’s book, Daisy Donald, which was released on World Diabetes Day, November 14.

We’ve had some fun, some really good chats, two radio media days – which were most certainly worth the effort, and plenty of publicity to go with it all; long may that partnership continue is all I can say.

On top of those I’ve continued with some football, covering the Northern Football Alliance (when the weather allows) and for the

second half of this year producing press for Bishop Auckland FC, and that my friends, was how my 2019 has pretty much gone along with making bit-part conversations with potentials along the way – I am serious!!!

Now though, as we head into 2020 I’m looking for more of the same if not more due not a constant need for progression simmering away; I do know already some of what will be happening, you have to in this game, and there’s a few things I’d also like to happen but time, as always, will tell.
