Hi Chris and welcome to NE Magazine, for the few readers who must be living in a cave somewhere and don’t know who you are how about giving th em a quick l ow- down o n yourself?

- Hello! Can’t help but think I’m writing your interview introduction for you here, oh well… I’m a stand-up comedian from South Shields and I’m also a bit of an actor now and then… but mainly a comedian… that might not come across as well as it should in print form, but I am.

So there.

At the moment it’s hard not seeing you on the TV when we switch it on as you’re everywhere, but what has been the highlight for you so far?

- Not everywhere though am I? If you turn on QVC and I’m selling a frying pan, just assume you’ll find me floating face down in a river very soon. The highlight for me so far was probably being in Hebburn. Since starting comedy I always wanted to try my hand at being in a sitcom too so I was over the moon to do one with my mate and so close to my heart, and I got to work with Vic Reeves.

I know you had a bit of a crazy time with fans wanting pics and autographs when you were having a few drinks in a South Shields bar recently, how are you finding this, does it put you off going out?

- Not at all. Any person in that position who has been on TV or whatever and people want photos (I’m trying my best not to say celebrity here!) who pretends they hate the attention is a liar. You don’t go for a career on TV because you don’t want anyone to notice you. As long as I’m not eating or having a shit when you want a photo then it’s no problem at all… I meant, like on the toilet, not just in the middle of the dancefloor.

Have you had any weird fan requests or incidents?

- Not really. The odd person will show up to a gig with my face on a T-Shirt, or bake me a cake, or send me a dead animal in the post but other than that it’s just photos and autographs. A little kid in Hebburn when we were filming asked me to sign his micro scooter… that was a bit weird.

As well as being a bit of a regular on Celebrity Juice, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8 out of 10 Cats you are now starring in the North East based sitcom Hebburn, how did that come about?

- My mate and fellow comedian Jason Cook decided to write a sitcom about the town he was from, Hebburn, and he actually wrote me a little side part which he named after me. But when it came to being made the BBC asked me to read for the main character, and when I got it, Jason took the part that he’d written for me! It came about so gradually that I didn’t really realise the enormity of being lead role in a BBC2 sitcom until I saw the advert on TV. I nearly passed out.

How has the response for Hebburn been so far?

- Overwhelmingly positive.

And we just won Best Drama at the RTS North awards too. And we’ve got a second series!

You are now embarking on your biggest tour to date, how do you feel about this?

- Yeah incredible! It’s an extension of my last tour, Feeling Lucky. I did 60+ dates in 2012 but the demand for tickets was so high and people enjoyed the show so much that I’m doing another 40 odd dates this year in much bigger venues. I can’t wait to get back out on the road.

Are there any venues on the tour that you are looking forward to playing or any you’re quite nervous about?

- The Theatre Royal in Newcastle. I absolutely can’t wait. I used to watch panto there when I was a kid. I’m

Macari prepares for new single release, by Dancing in the Moonlight with Leo Sayer Picture the scene, pop icon Leo Sayer has just brought the house down on the latest date of his ‘Just A Boy At 70’ UK Tour on Tyneside, at the Sage Gateshead, and, backstage, the 71-year-old star is introduced to one of the north’s finest talents.

The bowels of the Sage are corridor-ific, with some fantastic areas for visiting artists in which to relax, Beth herself has been there a few times herself, this time though she was doing something completely different as she prepares for the release of her latest single.

‘One More Time’ is due for release on June 21, however, June 8 will be remembered for the time Beth Macari and Leo Sayer shared a few verses of his hit ‘When I Need You’ in those afore-mentioned corridors – it’s safe to say Leo was impressed.

Already lauded over by the everbeautiful Gaby Roslin, Beth, who is preparing to release her fourth single in a little over twelve months is have the time of her life right now and attending the Leo gig, courtesy of his bassist, Richard Hammond, alongside her mum Tina, and gran, Lorraine (yes, there’s THREE Macari ladies), her smiles said it all.

“Leo was just amazing,” said Beth of her Sage visit.

“His energy, and the power he has in his voice, I had such a good night, as did my mum and gran.

“I’ve worked with the bassist from Leo’s band (Richard Hammond) when I was Jane McDonald’s backing singer, and

he told me how good Leo was live so I’m really pleased I got to see it for myself.”

Already impressing across the north-east, and beyond, with her tracks Clone, Boy and Stronger over the past twelve months already adding to her impressive range of tracks, it was, should you say, inevitable, Beth had to be backstage with Leo at some point.

Practising her vocals whilst waiting her opportunity, both with ‘When I Need You’ and ‘My Heart Will Go On,’ the latter being played over the Sage’s tannoy at the time – Beth acapella is just as stunning, and she’s proving to be a dab hand on the old drum kit as well (check the warm-up video for the Kardomah94, Hull gig on both hers, and her drummer, Phil Bell, Phil the Beat – Drummer, Facebook pages).

In meeting, talking tunes, and singing backstage with Leo is another one of those boxes ticked for the 26-year-old songstress, she added: “Meeting him (Leo) backstage was a great

“I briefly sang his hit, ‘When I Need You,’ and he said my voice

was really impressive and that we should send him some of my music; he’d love to perform with me which is nice, so who knows what’ll happen.”

With Beth’s focus firmly on the release of ‘One More Time,’ a track dedicated to that favourite person in her life and how she’d feel losing them (not her partner Ronan though, and her mam is still awaiting a track for her as well) we’re sure the Macari name is one that’ll stick around for some time.

“One More Time’ is for anyone who has lost someone,” continued Beth.

“I believe it’s the most painful and heart-breaking feeling.

“I have so many amazing people in my life that I genuinely don’t know how I will survive without them.”

Another track towards that elusive debut album (I’ll wager on it being self-titled, it’ll suit her to perfection), she’s working on it that’s for sure, Beth finishing by saying that: “Yes, an album is definitely in the pipeline.

“I am writing loads and I’m so excited to create a body of music that really represents who I am

as an artist.

Siblings continue to cement their legacy Teesside siblings, Helen and Joe Hammill, alongside family and friends, are heading into festival season buoyed by one release already, and another, ‘Navigator,’ to come.

Late April would see them release their eagerly anticipated EP, the lengthy-titled, ‘Live at the Middlesbrough Town Hall with the Northern Orchestra,’ a sixtrack masterpiece (produced by Paddy Jordan) emanating from their performance at the Town Hall in mid-2018.

The follow-up is set to be more exciting, the Teessiders announcing that ‘Navigator’ (produced by Pete Hammerton

– think Kylie Minogue, Paloma Faith, James Blunt and The Shires, to name a few) will land with a launch at the Newcastle Tyne Theatre & Opera House on November 8, alongside a UK promo-tour.

“Having the opportunity to headline Middlesbrough Town Hall, especially alongside an orchestra, was genuinely a dream come true for us,” beamed Helen.

“It was so nice to see lots of familiar faces there; a lot of our earlier songs, particularly from ‘Home,’ were written with strings and brass in mind, so having the Northern Orchestra make that happen live was very special.

“It’s really nice to have the EP as a permanent memento and the reaction to it has been lovely.”

Speaking of dreams coming true and permanent mementoes to the Cattle & Cane legacy, 2018 would see the track, ‘Infant Hercules,’ immortalised in both musical, and sporting history, when the lyrics were imprinted onto the inside collars of the home jerseys of Middlesbrough Football Club.

A year on from the occasion and Joe says, looking back: “To have my lyrics printed on the Boro shirt is a real privilege and definitely wasn’t something I thought would happen when writing it!

“I

celebrated; there’s so much in our history that we should be phenomenally proud of.

“I love the hard-working ‘get on with it’ attitude of this area and I tried to get that across in the song.

“There’s something about the area that you can’t quite identify in words; I guess spirit would be the closest I can get.

“I like songs that make you want to push your chest out with pride. I love that the Boro felt that this with the song.”

Fast-forward around twelve months and, heading into the summer of 2019, the siblings continue their relentless march towards greatness and with ongoing support from people like Dermot O’Leary and Sir Elton John, there’s long been something special about them.

The Metro summed up Cattle & Cane when saying: “The bands’ live show is magical....clap your hands and sing along – it’s pretty

much requisite at a Cattle & Cane show,” never have truer words been said than that.

“the summer is shaping up quite nicely,” a period which began with the single ‘Mexico.’

A summer of festivals ahead, including appearances at This Is Tomorrow (Newcastle) and Hardwick Live (Sedgefield) will fast make way for the release of the album, the tour, and an expectant, stunning launch at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House with Helen summing it by saying:

“We shot the video in the studio at Darlington College with Ryan Geddes, who we previously worked with on the videos for ‘Come Home’ and ‘Fool For You,’ for a new song called ‘Mexico,’ continued Joe. “We haven’t released the song

a step back last year and actually thought about how Cattle & Cane should sound and where we want to take it,” furthered Joe. “Being in a band isn’t always easy and sometimes it can take some time to find your way, but this is undoubtedly the most excited we’ve ever been about sharing new music.”

There’s plenty of dates in which music lovers can catch Cattle & Cane over the summer before they unleash themselves into an autumnal tour beginning on October 23 in Glasgow and taking in dates in Aberdeen, Ayton, Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Berwick, Newcastle, ending at Oslo in Hackney, London, on November 12.

There’s no place like home As they prepare to head out on their Encore, second leg of their critically acclaimed Woman to Woman Tour, international pop trio of Judie Tzuke, Beverly Craven and Julia Fordham explained a little of their ongoing love affair with our very own north-east.

The sad news for north-east music fans is that, when they head out on their Encore Tour this June, the furthest north they’ll appear is Harrogate, North Yorkshire (they take in the Royal Hall on June 14), but they’ve recently spoke openly, and candidly about their affection for the region.

One of the famed trio even has familial connections to the region, Julia Fordham able to trace recent family origins to Gateshead, Tyne-

and-Wear.

Presently residing in Los Angeles, California, with a mother who lives all the way down south on Hayling Island, just off of the South Coast, Julia is proud, warmed even, that her family has roots ‘up north.’

“My mum was born in Gateshead meaning that the Sage, I always try and book the venue when on UK tours, is a particular favourite of mine,” delights Julia.

“We had all hoped to play the big room at the Sage (the ladies performed there in November last year) and to be able to do so, collectively, with Woman to Woman,

Stables (Milton Keynes) and Cadogan Hall (London), the Sage Gateshead holds a special place for Judie which couldn’t be truer.

“I know Beverley and Julia and I (I’ve always had a soft spot for this part of the country), the Sage was one of the most special shows of the tour,” she beamed.

“The room was magnificent and we had a twenty-piece orchestra playing with us that night which was so emotional.

“I remember looking over at Bev and Jude and we all had that wow moment on stage.

“The sound at that venue, and the vibe in the room, and the shared feeling of the three of us savouring our shining moment, was really something that we all felt.”

Amidst the expectations of a few other tracks from their stunning, and critically acclaimed, Woman to Woman album being performed during the upcoming second leg, the ladies will continue to regale, and rendition, in their time-honoured past-times.

“To hear our songs played with live strings is something we will never forget.

“I believe though, that no matter what the size of the room, if people are there to see you, you give everything of yourself if there are 50 people or 500 people.”

Whilst Beverley added; “My personal, favourite shows were at the Gateshead Sage (we have a great picture of the three of us from that show) and the London Union Chapel.

“The Sage is an impressive venue, I’ve never played the big hall be-

fore, so that was a first.”

The second leg, Woman to Woman Encore, begins in Buxton on June 2 and takes in Swindon, London, Salford, Sheffield, Harrogate (on June 14), Birmingham, Milton Keynes (twice), Southend-on-Sea, Bury St. Edmunds, Brighton and finishes in Cardiff on June 26.

SR7’s Brightstar continues to rise These Social Room lads just can’t get enough of this music lark, can they?

Not content with touring with The Spitfires and working with Eurythmics legend Dave Stewart, they played his birthday bash and mixed some of their tunes you know!

Last month saw the SR7 six-piece share the bill with another legend, Noel Gallagher and The High Fly-

ing Birds in Newcastle’s Exhibition Park as part of the This Is Tomorrow Festival as vocalist Matty Smith and his cohorts turned back time in a manner only they have the knowledge how.

An increasing fan-base has seen Sunderland, Seaham to be precise, release a name to be reckoned with as the ‘Brightstar’ continues its meteoric rise with Smith being joined on stage by Adam Potts (guitar), Simon Bewick (guitar), Chris Leonard (keys), Alex Gunn (bass) and Tim Harker (drums).

They continue to sell out venues at home, understandable if you’ve had the pleasure of seeing them live, and now they’re aiming to break out of their regional stronghold with plans afoot to follow their recent release, the EP, ‘Brightstar’ and new single ‘It’s Not Goodbye’ with shows not just around the country.

“Going to Madrid (Madchester 19) was immense and meant we were able to get out of the country,” Matty said of their March trip to, of all places, Madrid, in Spain

– surely they couldn’t be known there.

“They loved us over there,” adds Matty, “so we’re hoping that we will be able to go back later in the year and it’s also something great that we can put onto our resume.

“The fans themselves were amazing and really jumping all over the place.”

Always true to their roots though, Independent in Sunderland a base they know well and a regular, festive haunt for Social Room it’s their new release which is hitting home.

All about their leaving home, and hitting the road, moving out of their comfort zone and going places new, ‘It’s Not Goodbye’ is a far cry from the band’s debut offering, ‘SR7’ back in 2015 (and a personal favourite, Be Forever Mine, released the following year).

“It’s Not Goodbye is about us doing all these gigs,” explained Matty.

“About upping sticks, and being

away from home, and not seeing anyone, although we’re all having a good time doing it.”

“The video itself was shot on the cliff tops of Seaham and the rape fields on the coast road over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, luckily we got the weather,” continued Adam.

“We got accused of fly-tipping while taking the sitting room into some farmers’ field and then eventually got thrown out the field by the farmer, but the video looks

cool so it was all worth it.”

Even supporting Dave Stewart at his 65th Birthday Bash at the Sunderland Empire must seem like a lifetime ago already for the lads, it was September 2017; but the bond the band struck up with one of Sunderland’s most favourite sons, Stewart was a ‘graduate’ of the Bede Grammar School for Boys, back in the day.

“We couldn’t quite believe it,” guitarist Potts said at the time of the Stewart announcement.

“Firstly the support slot and then a random message asking if we’d like to spend the day in the studio with him.

“He’s a down to earth bloke that loves his music.

“We were just getting to know each other and having a jam and this is a surreal moment in our lives. There’s some huge musicians playing with Dave and just couldn’t wait to get amongst it.”

Whilst Matty added: “The link with Stewart has brought us on massively.”

“Getting to go back on stage and perform ‘Old Habits Die Hard’ with him was just amazing and to continue working with him afterwards, it’s been fantastic.”

They further that with the release of their debut EP whilst also touring, either side of the last festive season, with Watford alternatives, The Spitfires as part of their Year Zero tour.

That alone gave the SR lads the kick to do something themselves, and with the ongoing support of This Feeling, and that fan-base the

iconic beat will soon, it’s hoped, be heard around the country.

A new wave, Britpop, alternative, indie-rock sound the six-piece provide shows as to why they were tipped as being one the ‘Big in 2019 Bands’ by This Feeling, a moniker which has certainly helped push their stock up a few notches as well, the Exhibition Park outing being yet another notch on an already impressive resume.

“We have had a lot more shows this year and have been on tour

with The Spitfires, played our first headline show outside the UK, in Madrid, and teamed up with This Feeling as one of their ‘Big in 2019’ tipped bands,” Adam stated.

“Performing, touring, with The Spitfires was an ideal call for us and something that was also needed, as a band,” Matty added.

“It helped us to see how touring works, and got us some good practice for doing our own tours in the near future.”

So, with a promise of more to come, the resurrection is certainly theirs, so why don’t you let them light up your skies, and join them on the unforgiving road to stardom.

After all, ‘It’s Not Goodbye,’ it’s very much a ‘Brightstar’ rising.

{2019} {Artist} {of the} {Year} Home, Sweet Home!!

It’s true what they say, there is no place like home and for urban photographer, Lucinda Grange, the sentiment is real.

She may have photographed some of the weird and wonderful places on god’s green earth, above and below ground, but some of her favourite, and best work, is from right here in Northern England, with Hartlepool being where she calls home.

From the Tyne to the Tees, and all in-between, Lucinda has seen it all whilst always looking for that, different, shot, or going for the image others wouldn’t dream of going for and it’s here she talks about her favourites – the Art Gallery and the Sewers in her home town

“Although I’ve been fortunate enough to travel for my passion, some of the best adventures have been on my doorstep! On OUR doorstep,” began Lucinda.

“I grew up in Blackhall, a small mining village on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

“Having seen miners lamps in the homes and on the windowsills of so many homes in the village, having heard so many stories, and seen collapsed caves at the beach and miners wheels displayed in this and other local miners villages, it was no wonder I have been intrigued by the underground

from such a young age!

“Although I didn’t find a mine, I’ve found many amazing places

underground in the North-East England.

“The winding, labyrinth-like, red brick and concrete sewers of Hartlepool is certainly a favourite of mine.”

That, along with the Hartlepool Art Gallery, were regular haunts of a young Lucinda, who now resides over a bigger expanse of water in New York City.

Located in the cultural quarter, in Church Square, the Gallery is actually a restored Victorian Church built in the 1850s with a 100-foot bell tower to match, however, the Gallery itself was only opened in 1996.

Then there’s those darned bridges, Lucinda is very fond of a bridge or two and has an extensive catalogue of work to back that statement up – having scaled the heights of many if the world’s most famous, it’s the one’s back home that still intrigues, and delights the young photographer.

“I’ve climbed the Brooklyn Bridge,

Forth Rail Bridge, and Ponte Hercílio Luz, Brazil’s longest suspension bridge,” states Lucinda.

“In Teesside we have the iconic Transporter Bridge, and the stunning, recently repainted, Newport Bridge.

The banks of the Tyne, Tees, and Wear are full of bridges, stunning in their own, individual rights and with the Transporter and Newport Bridges on Teesside, Tyneside’s most famous ‘old lady’ is that of the Tyne Bridge, one of many bridges crossing the River Tyne as you head from Gateshead into Newcastle.

So what is it about home that gets Lucinda hot under the collar, well, as she says here: “In the NorthEast we’re so fortunate to have an amazing mix or stunning urban cities, beautiful countryside, industry that inspired great creatives such as Ridley Scott, and we’ve got some fantastic heritage as well.

LEO SAYER JUST A BOY AT 70

Pop icon, Leo Sayer, soars at the Sage Countless classics, rolling back the years, and women dancing in the aisles can pretty much sum up Leo Sayer’s ‘Just A Boy At 70’ Sage Gateshead show on June 8.

Sayer, who turned 71 earlier

in his tour, shows little sign of slowing down as the crowd lapped up every moment of the pop icon’s time on stage, pretty much knowing every word, of every track, the South Coast born star belted out.

All the hits were there, you’d expect no less, and the crowd loved it, more the ladies who were up dancing in the rows, and the aisles, with numbers increasing as the set wore on – and the more he sang, the louder the sang back to him.

Decked in black, with a Hawaiian shirt beneath for good measure, Sayer performed hits like Thunder In My Heart, Moonlighting, When I Need You and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, telling the occasional story in between and lapping up the attention afforded him.

Granted he may be a septuagenarian but the moves he can still pull off on stage will make others of a similar age, somewhat bewildered, and jealous – and he can play the harmonica pretty darned well also.

That musical accompaniment took a hammering when in face-offs with both his guitarist (Dave Day), and bass (Richard Hammond) players during the second half of the show, the harmonica definitely won on those occasions.

Personal highlights were the When I Need You (recorded and on my Media page HERE), Restless Years and Orchard Road, although for the ladies theirs would be so different, mind I think they were too busy rocking the aisles and singing along to care too much.

Coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8 the region’s Lucinda Grange (formerly of Hartlepool, now New York City) saw some of her finest work, from the project ‘Backwards and in High Heels,’ included in the Donna Karan – Urban Zen exhibition in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.

Beginning on March 8 and running through until April 7, Ms. Grange’s most prized project, entitled as ‘Dancing with the Stars’ included in the exhibition ran by the ArtLead Her platform, a vision founded by Mashinda Tirfere.

Supporting and promoting only female artists, ArtLead Her aims to help level the field in the art world, where the gender bias is very strong and, being part of what is Women’s History Month will help envelope that consensus.

Speaking of her prized project, ‘Backwards and in High Heels,’ Lucinda said: “It is a quote in reference to Ginger Rodgers.

“Fred Astaire, her male dance partner, would get more fame, fortune and attention than she did, yet she did everything he did, backwards and in high heels.

“This project started with two selfportraits on the Chrysler Building (Midtown Manhattan, New York) and gradually grew as I photographed women I know and admire in places you wouldn’t expect

to see anyone - let alone a woman, looking strong and extravagant in a dress!

“The aim of this project was to question stereotypes women are often subjected to, and instead highlight the strength and power

of these women.”

To be included within the exhibition, for Lucinda, is something she is excited about and follows immediately after her solo exhibition, ‘City Cross-Section’ which was held at the Lyle O. Reitzel Contemporary Art Gallery and finished late-February.

In the new exhibition at the Urban Zen Lucinda exhibited an image, ‘King Woman,’ which depicts Ingrid Silva, lead dancer for the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

“In this picture, Ingrid is on point on the ladder of a water tower on a NYC rooftop.

“Ingrid grew up in Brazil, a very humble beginning, and now she’s the dance company’s top dancer, traveling the world, following her

passion.

“She is now performing to crowds of thousands despite the many obstacles that have been in her way.

“Not only is she Brazilian, she is also black and petite, very far from those who one might expect to see as the lead dancer.

“Her sheer willpower, dedication and determination got her all the way from living in Brazil, to being one of the top dancers in this city.

“My aim was to capture the feeling of this inspiring person and her story in this one single image.”

Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It is celebrated during March in the U.S. the U.K. and Australia, coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8.

Kiefer Sutherland is to headline this year’s SummerTyne Americana Festival at Sage Gateshead in July.

The Hollywood superstar turned singer-songwriter released his debut album in 2016. His second album, Reckless & Me, comes out at the end of the month and has country music at its heart, taking influence from Americana, folk, rock, blues and more.

Sutherland is famous for portraying Jack Bauer in hit TV series 24 and most recently the hit series Designated Survivor. Among the iconic films he has starred in are The Lost Boys, A Few Good Men,

SummerTyne runs from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 July and is in its 14th year. k.d.lang has already been announced as the headline opening act for the Friday. Strictly Country featuring The Wandering Hearts, Lauren Alaina, Eve Selis and Catherine McGrath will headline the Saturday night. Kiefer will close the weekend on Sunday night with Americana rocker Jesse Dayton as special guest opener.

The opening night will see a return to action for Americana legends The Long Ryders, who have recently released their first album in over 30 years, rising pedal steel star, Roosevelt ‘The Dr’ Collier and blues legend Alvin Youngblood Hart.

Saturday will welcome Kentucky old-time newcomers The Local Honeys, alongside Oregon songwriter Rachel Harrington. Strictly Country’s Wandering Hearts are at the forefront of the new British Americana scene and blew the SummerTyne freestage crowds away last year. This year heading

up Strictly Country in the main hall, they will be joined by American Idol star Lauren Alaina, whose first album was hailed by critics; the Queen of roadhouse rock Eve Selis; and Northern Irish singersongwriter Catherine McGrath, who is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in the UK country scene. Also on Saturday night will be An Evening with The Cowboy Junkies. The alt-country rock legends were formed in Canada by siblings Michael, Margo and

Peter Timmins and lifelong friend Alan Anton over 30 years ago.

And making a welcome return to SummerTyne is Queen of Cajun music, accordionist Sarah Savoy alongside rockabilly favourites The John Lewis Trio.

Over in Sage Two on the Sunday night we welcome back New Zealand singer-songwriter Marlon Williams, recently seen alongside Bradley Cooper in Oscar-winning film A Star is Born.
