AfterWorldWarII,Britainwasinneedof rebuilding.Thecountrywasseverelydamaged, andtherewereshortagesofworkersinkey industriesliketransport,theNHS,construction, andmanufacturing.
Tosolvethislabourshortage,theBritish governmentinvitedcitizensfrom Commonwealthcountries—especiallythe Caribbean—tocomeandhelprebuildthe country.Thesewerepeoplefromcountriesthat hadlongbeenunderBritishcolonialrule.They hadbeentaughtBritishvalues,Britishhistory, andmanyhadfoughtforBritaininthewar.They believedtheywerecomingtothe“Mother Country.”

OnJune22.1948,theHMTEmpireWindrush arrivedatTilburyDocksinEssex. IthadsailedfromKingston,Jamaica,stopping atTrinidadandBermudabeforecrossingthe Atlantic.
Onboardwere492passengers,mostlyfrom Jamaica,butalsofromotherCaribbeanislands likeTrinidad,Barbados,andBermuda.

Bythe1960’s,planesbegantoreplaceshipsas themainformoftransport.Mostoftheearly WindrushgenerationcamefromtheBritish coloniesandwereBritishcitizensbylaw.
AlthoughinvitedtohelprebuildBritain,many membersoftheWindrushgenerationfaced racism,discrimination,andpoverty.
Theywereoftendeniedjobsdespitetheir qualifications.Manywereturnedawayfrom housingwithsignsthatsaidthingslike“No Blacks,NoIrish,NoDogs.”Yet,theypersevered —workinginbuses,trains,hospitals,factories, andcontributingimmenselytoBritishlife.
Theybuiltcommunities,startedchurches, openedbusinesses,andraisedgenerationsof childrenwhowouldgrowupBritish.
Unfortunately,inrecentyears,thisgeneration wasatthecentreoftheWindrushScandal.
In2018,itcametolightthatmanypeoplefrom theWindrushgeneration—whohadlivedinthe UKlegallyfordecades—werewrongly detained,deniedhealthcare,orevendeported becausetheycouldn’tprovetheirrighttostay.
