Supporting Students. Celebrating Educators. Strengthening Communities.
The IMPACT Scholarship is a groundbreaking initiative that transforms student essays into a legacy of teacher appreciation.
The program was created to support students who are often overlooked by traditional financial-aid models, while acknowledging and celebrating impactful teachers.
The IMPACT Scholarship is an investment in students who have demonstrated motivation and perseverance even when resources were scarce.
The IMPACT Scholarship began at a community college where a partnership with an enthusiastic individual paved the way for its creation.
The IMPACT Scholarship seeks to identify and reward motivated students with a deep appreciation for education while honoring teachers as essential partners in student success. What makes the IMPACT Scholarship unique is not just who it serves, but how recipients are chosen. Students with determination and purpose, rather than perfect transcripts, are essential in the selection process.
Rather than ranking by grades or test scores, the selection process begins by asking one question:
Students apply by writing a reflective essay (300–500 words) honoring the educator who impacted their educational trajectory and profoundly shaped their lives the teacher who believed in them, challenged them, or showed them a path forward.
Their words become a lasting tribute: an authentic, personal recognition that celebrates the educator’s impact while inspiring a culture of appreciation across campus.
This structure ensures maximum impact: financial relief for students, recognition for educators, and community-building events that reinforce the college’s mission.
IMPACT Scholarship Qualifications:
● Write a 300-500 word essay honoring an impactful teacher
● No GPA requirements
Community colleges are the economic backbone of their regions. Most graduates live and work close to where they attend college, filling high-demand roles in healthcare, trades, and technical fields. Investing in community college students means investing directly in the local workforce, local families, and local employers.
The IMPACT Scholarship is designed to:
• Meet the demands of the changing trends in the job market dictating more opportunities requiring formal education in trade-focused careers.
• Assist adults who are returning to school to prepare for a second career.
• Assist students who are working closer to home in an effort to save funds to complete their education at a four-year university.
• Target students challenged by lack of access to scholarships based on ACT/SAT test scores.
• Provide students with an opportunity to establish academic success at a community college, qualifying them for academic scholarships to complete their education at four-year universities.
• Assist students seeking to transfer to a four-year university after exploring options and completing basic courses required as a foundation in a wide array of degrees.

Community Colleges are the regional hub for essential job training communities need.
The IMPACT Scholarship began at a community college where the development team and one donor believed students should have a way to honor the teachers who shaped their lives. What started as a modest plan receive 30+ applications, award twenty $500 awards for one semester, with no GPA requirement quickly grew into something far more powerful. Students responded with more than 100 heartfelt essays, far exceeding expectations. Their stories revealed teachers who helped them rise above poverty, instability, and academic setbacks. The demand was undeniable. The scholarship immediately expanded to provide $1,000 per student across two semesters.
A small award luncheon was given for the recipients and IMPACT teachers that unexpectedly became a regional celebration. Superintendents, principals, teachers and college leaders filled the room, eager to recognize the students and the educators who inspired them. What was meant to be a financial aid event became a catalyst for deeper relationships between K-12 regional school districts and community colleges.

20 Scholarships Awarded
By the end of its first year, the IMPACT Scholarship had proven:
3.4 GPA Maintained Semesters One & Two
• Students are eager to publicly honor the teachers who changed their lives.
• Teachers feel valued when their work is recognized.
• School leaders become more engaged when their educators and students are celebrated.
• Community colleges can serve as a powerful hub connecting educators across the state.
The IMPACT Scholarship didn’t just fund students, it strengthened an educational ecosystem. It demonstrated what becomes possible when a highly engaged development team and one donor’s vision meets a community ready to rise together.
The IMPACT Scholarship reached a defining moment in its second year. Building on the strong outcomes at the community college, the development team expanded the program to a second institution demonstrating that the model could scale and strengthen partnerships across the community college system.
Essays Submitted
Growth brought structure, momentum, and deeper engagement:
• 250 student essays submitted, reflecting rising awareness and demand.
• 50 scholarships awarded - and when demand exceeded capacity, 10 additional awards were made available, turning scarcity into possibility.
• The development team added a new scholarship renewal feature, allowing students who earned a minimum 3.25 GPA in their first two semesters to receive an additional $500 award for semesters three and four.
• Note: These options were added based on results and enthusiasm from the first year.
This expansion signaled more than increased numbers. It showed the IMPACT Scholarship could:
• Elevate student success through multi-semester support.
• Strengthen institutional collaboration across colleges.
• Provide donors with a scalable, high-impact investment.
• Reinforce the community college mission of access, persistence, and completion.
Year Two proved that the IMPACT Scholarship wasn’t just growing it was becoming a sustainable, systemwide model for recognizing educators, supporting students, and deepening the connection between K–12 school districts and community colleges.
By the third year, the IMPACT Scholarship had evolved from a promising pilot into a multi-campus, multistate initiative driven by the development team. Fourteen community colleges across the state joined the program, along with one college in Texas, and one college in Tennessee that committed to launching in 2027. The expansion signaled the IMPACT model was not only effective for students - but was also replicable, scalable, and valued by educators in multiple states.
What began as a single-campus initiative is now a growing regional movement, strengthening the pipeline from early literacy to college success.
By the end of Year Three, the IMPACT Scholarship had become more than a scholarship program. It had grown into a network of service, leadership, and educational partnership. Interest and enthusiasm was spreading through word-of-mouth among administrators, faculty, and K–12 leaders who saw firsthand the value it brought to their students and communities.

Real outcomes from 3 years offering this scholarship demonstrate the program’s power. Student essays reveal profound gratitude and highlight the deep influence of teachers who guided, encouraged, and believed in them. Faculty feel seen and appreciated. Donors witness the tangible results of their giving, and the college strengthens its culture by celebrating relationships at the heart of student success.
This is the culmination of 3 years of focused gratitude:

This is a practical, scalable model that any college can adopt with minimal resources and maximum return.

The Development Foundation team at Northeast Mississippi Community College, led by Patrick Eaton, immediately recognized the strength of a donor’s idea to award scholarships to students who honored the teachers who shaped their lives. Their long-held belief that scholarships should inspire gratitude, energize faculty, and engage donors aligned perfectly with the donor’s vision.
Even while managing all existing scholarships, the team eagerly embraced this new initiative. Their deep experience supporting low-income students and their passion for student success made it clear the Impact Scholarship was in capable hands.
By the end of the first year, results were so strong that the team encouraged the donor to expand the program to a second community college. Both colleges demonstrated meaningful outcomes, and Patrick was invited to present the program at the 2025 MCCA&A conference for community college development officers in Mississippi. The response was remarkable 14 of Mississippi’s 15 colleges, with full-time enrollments ranging from 1,200 to more than 5,000 students, chose to offer the scholarship to their incoming students.
The program continues to evolve through ongoing collaboration with students, teachers, principals, superintendents, and college leaders.
Now entering its third year with proven results, growing enthusiasm and momentum the NEMCC team is ready to share the Impact Scholarship with community colleges beyond their state.
The team’s commitment to developing and expanding the Impact Scholarship, first across Mississippi and now beyond, has fully affirmed the donor’s belief that this college, and this team, were the right partners to launch a movement.
“The IMPACT Scholarship has grown considerably, extending its influence beyond the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College. It has begun to garner recognition throughout the state of Mississippi and is now gaining traction among community colleges outside of the state. We are immensely grateful to our very generous donor for providing this opportunity. We are proud to witness the evolution of this local initiative into a program with such widespread and meaningful impact. It is our hope that the IMPACT Scholarship continues to empower students and honor the dedication of our educators.”
- Dr. Ricky Ford President, Northeast Mississippi Community College

The initial funding for this scholarship was donated from an anonymous source who has experienced the results of a life focused on accepting the love of Jesus and giving forgiveness to others.
The following summary and quotes are from 2024 IMPACT Scholarship student essays:
Students consistently described teachers who went far beyond academic instruction, shaping their character and confidence in lasting ways. Many recalled learning not only reading, writing, and grammar, but also life lessons about integrity, perseverance, faith, and personal responsibility. Several students emphasized how these teachers modeled resilience, encouraged a love for learning, and taught them to believe in themselves even when circumstances were difficult.
A recurring theme was emotional safety and genuine care. Students spoke of teachers who noticed when something was wrong, offered a listening ear, created safe spaces to talk, and provided encouragement that stayed with them long after class ended. Whether through daily check-ins, heartfelt advice, or simply being present, these educators made students feel seen, valued, and supported during some of the most stressful moments of their lives.
Many students also highlighted the broader impact these teachers had on their school communities. They described educators who supported extracurricular activities, strengthened relationships between schools, and demonstrated the unseen work teachers do outside the classroom. Through their example, students learned compassion, empathy, and the importance of helping others - recognizing that educators often change lives in ways that extend far beyond academics.
“With her guidance through the years I feel more confident, loved, and accepted… I learned the true essence of resilience, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself.”
“Failure was success in progress… I carry those words with me in everything I do.”
“When she walked into the classroom she automatically knew that something was not right with me… she pulled me aside and asked if I needed someone to talk to or even just a hug.”
“While I am abundantly thankful that she shaped my love for learning, I am more grateful for the lessons she taught me about how to conduct myself.”
“I learned how school can be fun and that knowledge is a powerful tool.”
Student Essay - Teacher’s name replaced with IMPACT Teacher to ensure privacy.
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve had many teachers, but none made as big of an impact as (IMPACT Teacher). As my high school English teacher, she saw something in me that I hadn’t yet recognized in myself. She challenged me to push past self-doubt, step outside my comfort zone, and believe in my own potential. Her guidance didn’t just make me a better student; it shaped the way I approach challenges and opportunities in life.
At the beginning of her class, I rarely spoke up. I kept my thoughts to myself, convinced that my ideas weren’t strong enough to share. (IMPACT Teacher) wasn’t the type to let that slide. Instead of letting me stay in the background, she made sure I knew my voice mattered. When I turned in an essay that played it safe, she didn’t just hand it back with a grade. Instead, she left detailed feedback, asking questions that pushed me to think critically and dig deeper. She never let me settle for “good enough” because she knew I was capable of more.
One moment that really stuck with me was when she handed back an assignment with a note that read, “You have a voice worth hearing - don’t be afraid to use it.” That single sentence changed everything. With her encouragement, I started speaking up in class, taking on leadership roles, and believing in my own abilities. Her confidence in me helped me build confidence in myself.
Because of (IMPACT Teacher), I now strive to be the kind of person who lifts others up, just as she did for me. Whether it's mentoring a younger student, encouraging a friend, or supporting a teammate, I want to help others recognize their own potential. I’ve learned that sometimes, all it takes is one person’s belief to change the course of someone’s life.
(IMPACT Teacher) didn’t just teach me how to write a better essay. She taught me how to believe in myself. Her impact will stay with me, and I hope to pay it forward by inspiring others the way she inspired me.
Student Essay - Teacher’s name replaced with IMPACT Teacher to ensure privacy.
(IMPACT Teacher) made a significant impact in my life. He was my intro to algebra and Algebra 2 teacher. When I first started high school, he helped me and made me feel comfortable. I went to Hills Chapel Elementary School previously and transferred to a new school where I first met my IMPACT Teacher.
He always had a welcoming smile every time I walked into class. He was like a best friend over the years, always making his students laugh and helping them cheer up if they were in bad moods. He would always encourage his students and uplift them.
He was a tough teacher; however, I think it helped me in the long run. He made us memorize and learn all the formulas. I truly believe that him making us do that, helped with my memorization. I feel like I can now memorize most anything. If we had extra questions, we could stay after class or come during his break time, and he would help us in any way possible. He wanted nothing but success for his students.
Even with my first year of college when I was in college algebra, he told me that I could come to him and he would help me with any questions I had. That shows a lot about a teacher when they are willing to even help you when you start college.
Not only was he my math teacher over the years, but he was also my assistant basketball coach during my freshman year. He was always encouraging in the classroom and on the court. He always pushed us to our limits, but that's what made us better. He saw the potential in all the players. He strived to make us better and helped correct us so we could work together better as a team.
I want to help people like my (IMPACT Teacher) did. I may not help in the way that he helped people, but I hope to be able to help patients in the medical field. I was accepted into nursing school for fall of 2025 and I hope to obtain my RN ADN degree. Once I can become a nurse, I can help my patients. I hope to encourage them if life isn't going their way. I hope to make them smile and lift them up that same way he did to his students. He is such an inspiration and role model to not only me, but to so many others as well.
Student Essay - Administrator’s name replaced with IMPACT Hero to ensure privacy.
Throughout my educational career, I have been mentored by many wonderful teachers. I spent kindergarten through eighth grade at Tishomingo School and spent the entirety of my high school career at Belmont High School.
The person that I learned the most from was (IMPACT Hero) at Tishomingo School. My elementary school career was filled with the hardest trials that I have faced so far. In second grade, my mother and I were in a devastating car accident on the way to school. This accident left my mother with severe injuries such as brain damage and a physical disability. Although she was never expected to make it out of the hospital, after lots of hard work and determination she has made a full recovery and lives close to a normal life.
Shortly after, in third grade, my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As a young child, hearing the word “cancer” was life altering. Eighteen short months later, my dad passed away. I was now left as a daughter of a widowed mother with a disability.
Throughout this time, many people were there for me. Most of all, my (IMPACT Hero) showed me more love and compassion than imaginable. Although she was not an educator, she taught me more than could ever be taught in a classroom. She taught me about love, perseverance, determination, and having love for the Lord – far more valuable lessons than mathematics. She is a perfect example of a woman of Christ.
Although she might not be aware of the impact she made on me, it is one that I will never forget. She was the first one to speak to me as I walked through the doors, and the last smile I saw as I left. No matter the circumstance, she was there for me. From when I would scrape my knee on the playground and needed to be cleaned up, to the time I made the cheerleading team, she remained one of my biggest fans.
Most importantly, I have felt the power of her prayers throughout the years. Without people like her, I would not have been able to make it through the times I was faced with. She and I still have a wonderful relationship, many years later. I see her regularly and our visits never fail to leave me with a smile on my face and a full heart. I have been so blessed to experience the love from her throughout my life. She is the best gift Tishomingo School gave me!
This is what teachers are saying about the IMPACT Scholarship program…
“I’ve poured my heart into teaching for years, and this recognition makes me feel seen, valued, and deeply appreciated.”
“Being selected is incredibly humbling. It’s one of those moments that reminds me why I chose this profession in the first place.”
“This honor hit me in a way I didn’t expect it’s emotional. You don’t always see your impact until something like this brings it into focus.”
“On the hard days, this is what I’ll remember. It re-energizes me and reminds me that what we do truly matters.”
“It’s more than an award, it’s affirmation. It tells me the long hours, the care, and the commitment are making a difference.”
“This moment is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my career. It’s a reminder that being a teacher is about leaving a lasting mark.”

The Impact Scholarship Program is a unique scholarship designed to recognize students’ academic achievements while also highlighting the profound influence of impactful educators. Its core goal is to build stronger ties between students, teachers, and the institution by celebrating these significant relationships. This program was initiated for the Fall 2024 semester.
The donor’s primary intent is to highlight and honor outstanding teachers who have made a significant difference in students’ lives. The core philosophy recognizes the invaluable ripple effect of mentorship, guidance, and support throughout an educational journey. For any institution, the benefits are multifaceted: it enhances community engagement and goodwill, provides a public celebration of teaching excellence, and offers direct support for student success and financial need.
Each award recipient receives $500 per fall semester and $500 per spring semester, totaling $1,000 annually. Eligibility is based on academic achievement and demonstrated financial need.
A truly unique requirement is the “Impact Teacher” Essay a mandatory 300–500-word essay where students share a story about the teacher who made the most significant impact on their life.
The application process is integrated within AwardSpring, NEMCC’s existing Foundation Scholarship system. Applications open November 1st with a submission deadline of March 15th (or your institution’s equivalent).
The program extends beyond financial aid by formally recognizing each recipient’s “Impact Teacher” at a special awards luncheon. The public recognition creates a tangible connection, fosters appreciation for educators, and inspires both current students and faculty alike.
