NEMCC Foundation Annual Report - FY 2022

This report includes many impressive statistics on the Foundation’s growth, as well as analysis of how these activities have occurred. More important, the following pages illustrate the growing need for all Northeast Mississippi Community College and how donors, alums, and businesses are working with us to meet that need. While the information told here accounts for only a small portion of Northeast’s large impact in providing higher educational opportunities in Northeast Mississippi; all can take great pride in the achievements highlighted in this report.

The Northeast Mississippi Community College Development Foundation, Inc. annually engages the services of an independent accounting firm to perform an audit of the Foundation’s financial statements. As part of the audit, the firm also reviews the internal controls and various policies and procedures to ensure the Foundation staff is adhering to the most current accounting practices. The Foundation’s auditor, Sparks CPA Firm, has issued an unmodified audit opinion on the financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2022.

Eaton Inducted into

EATON EXCELS IN HIGHER EDUCATION AS THE VP FOR INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

D. Patrick Eaton, MBA, CFRE, has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An accomplished higher education professional of more than two decades, Mr. Eaton joined Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC) in 2000 as the vice president of institutional advancement and the executive director of the Development Foundation and Alumni Association.

Among a myriad of responsibilities, Mr. Eaton develops programs and projects that enhance the image of the college through its foundation. He also strives to build strong relationships with various organizations, foundations, and individuals interested in providing scholarships and other programs to support NEMCC. Looking toward the future, Mr. Eaton aims to continue serving as an asset in his role, providing his insight and expertise to ensure that the institution remains strong. During his tenure his efforts, along with those of others, the NEMCC Development Foundation has been able to provide over $25 million in funds to support the college with various building projects and scholarships for students.

Utilizing his extensive background as a former nonprofit executive, Mr. Eaton notably served as the executive director of the Boonville Area Chamber of Commerce from 1996 to 2000 where he was instrumental in directing economic and community development. He also found success renovating a train depot and was

transformed into an office and museum space. Mr. Eaton notably wrote and secured several grants to aid in the facility’s enhancements, acquire staff members, and built very strong volunteer base.

As a dedicated civil advocate, Mr. Eaton is presently serving on the board of directors and Vice President of the MS Community College Advancement and Alumni Association. He is also currently serving on the Boy and Girl Club corporate Board of Directors, and he is the Treasurer. Mr. Eaton has recently been nominated to serve as a charter Board member on a new community initiative named PROPEL (Prentiss Realizing Opportunities for Prosperity, Excellence and

Leadership). This newly established Endowment Fund will allow Prentiss County residents to ask for a grant award for various community development needs.

Mr. Eaton graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in business, management, marketing, and related support services. He subsequently studied at Columbia Southern University where he received a Master of Business Administration.

Mr. Eaton is a current certified fundraising executive.

Eaton credits his faith, which comes first in his life, and his family for contributions to his professional success.

D. PATRICK EATON RECERTIFIED AS A CERTIFIED FUND RAISING EXECUTIVE (CFRE)

CFRE International is proud to announce Patrick Eaton has recertified as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Patrick Eaton, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of Northeast MS Community College Development Foundation & Alumni Association, is one of over 7,700 professionals around the world who hold the CFRE designation. Patrick has held the CFRE certification since 2017.

Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of standards set by CFRE International which include tenure in the profession, education, and demonstrated fundraising achievement. They have also passed a rigorous exam testing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a fundraising executive, and have agreed to uphold Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.

“The CFRE credential was created to identify for the public and employers those individuals who possess the knowledge, skills, and commitment to perform fundraising duties in an effective and ethical manner,” states CFRE International President and CEO Eva E. Aldrich, Ph.D., CAE, (CFRE 2001-2016). “As the certification is a voluntary achievement, the CFRE certification demonstrates a high level of commitment on the part of <username> to the fundraising profession and the donors who are served” CFRE recipients are awarded certification for a three-year period. To maintain certification status, certificants must demonstrate on-going fundraising employment and fundraising results and continue with their professional education. Employers and donors who work with CFREs know they are getting a professional who is committed to the best outcomes for their organization and has the requisite knowledge and skills.

The CFRE certification signifies a confident, ethical fundraising professional.

Since 1981, CFRE has set standards for fundraising professionals. As the only globallyrecognized fundraising certification, CFRE indicates professionalism, confidence, and ethics. It is how today’s fundraiser shows accountability, service, and commitment to making a difference for good. The CFRE certification program is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) and is the only accredited certification for fundraising professionals.

Excellence Award JOHNSON AMONG THE 2023 NISOD EXCELLENCE AWARD HONOREES Tiffany Johnson, CEOE, Northeast Development Foundation financial officer, is a 2023 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award recipient.

NISOD Excellence Awards have a 30-year history of recognizing and honoring extraordinary faculty, administrators and staff whose service to their students, colleagues and community is exemplary.

Johnson is one of 12 Northeast employees to make the 2023 list.

“Being a part of the Foundation for the past 23 years has been such a blessing,” Johnson said.

“We see such generosity by so many individuals that simply give to make students’ lives better. That is a unique experience and one that inspires me in every aspect of my life. “ An awards dinner and celebration was held in Austin Texas May 28, 2023 where honorees received a a medallion, awards booklet and certificate.

The Northeast Mississippi Community College athletic department brought back two of its longtime offerings that have produced several successful champions in the past. Northeast reinstated its men’s and women’s tennis programs following a four-year layoff. The Lady Tigers and Tigers officially returned to head-to-head competition during the 2021-22 academic year.

Northeast has four tennis courts on campus nestled between the Haney Union, Ramsey Hall and the aquatics center. They are the only courts available for use in the entire county. Local high schools such as Booneville and New Site utilize these courts for their practices and “home” matches.

Homecoming 2022

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s student body elected Iuka native Brianna Lowrey to reign as the college’s 2022 Homecoming Queen during campus-wide elections in mid-September.

Lowrey, a graduate of Tishomingo County High School, is the daughter of Casey and Brandy Johnson.

Northeast’s 2022 Homecoming Court was presented during halftime of the Tiger’s football game against Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday, September 22.

Joining Lowery on the 2022 Homecoming Court are sophomore maids Madison Grace Bennett of New Albany, Mary Houston Ivy of Booneville, Lexie Bollinger of Bruce, Ivy Loden of Marietta, Lynsie Kate Burns of Booneville, and Jaycee Drew Janzen of Booneville.

2022 ALUMNI HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Mike Staten (1972-1974)

Union County native Mike Staten, president and member of the Board of Directors of BNA Bank in New Albany is the 2022 Northeast Development Foundation Alumni Hall of Fame inductee.

Currently a member of the Board of Trustees at Northeast, Staten attended the Northeast Mississippi Junior College from 1972-74 and has been a great ambassador for and donor to the college ever since.

He is a member of the Northeast Development Foundation Board of Directors and has served multiple terms. He was elected president for the 2005-06 academic year.

In 2009 Staten was instrumental in the creation of the Union County Tuition Guarantee program. It was the first of its kind in Northeast’s fivecounty service district, which includes Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo, and Union counties.

A graduate of W.P. Daniel High School (now New Albany High School), he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with an emphasis on banking and finance and general business from the University of Mississippi; Staten also attended commercial lending schools at LSU and Vanderbilt. He has spent his entire professional career in the banking industry. He is a member of the Mississippi Bankers Association Board of Directors and is a past president of the Mississippi Young Bankers Association.

Active in the community, Staten is a member and past chairman of the Union County Development Association Board of Directors, a member of the advisory board for the North Mississippi Medical Center of Tupelo, member and secretary of the Three Rivers Community Development

Entity, treasurer and board member of Trail Life, USA - sponsored by First Baptist Church of New Albany, past member of the City of New Albany Tourism Board, past finance chairman of Union County Habitat for Humanity and past member of the Union County Leadership Academy board of directors. He is past chairman of the Magnolia Civic Center Board of Directors.

Staten is a past director of the Yocona Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and recipient of the Order of the Arrow and Silver Beaver Awards.

In 2018 Staten was the recipient of the Jack Reed, Sr. Community Leadership Award presented by the CREATE Foundation.

As an advocate of education, Staten is a member and past chairman of

the Blue Mountain College Board of Trustees and member and cochairman of Excel by 5 Pre-K Initiative for New Albany and Union County. He is the Union County representative to the Toyota Wellspring Education Fund Committee and past chairman of the Dean Provence Endowment for Excellence in Education, New Albany City Schools.

Staten is a member of First Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon.

He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Union County Baptist Association.

Mike and his wife Angie have two sons, Matt, and Luke. Matt and his wife Ellen live in New Albany. Luke and his wife Amy reside in Houston, Texas. Both Matt and Luke are Northeast alumni.

Robert Gordon (BASEBALL, 1992-93)

Tim Cole will forever be known as one of the most prolific scorers in the Tigers’ tradition-rich history.

He still holds the program record for most points in a single game with 64 against Pearl River Community College in the 1997 region tournament.

That game set the stage for what turned out to be a brilliant sophomore campaign for Cole. He averaged 28.4 points, which was third best in the entire country, under the direction of head coach Mike Lewis.

He earned NJCAA All-American distinction after recording more than 30 points in 15 games.

Cole also received NJCAA AllRegion 23 and All-MACCC firstteam honors after his last year at Northeast.

Cole reached double figures in 55 of his 57 appearances with the Tigers. His career averages at Northeast include 27.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 2.2 assists along with a 46.7 field goal percentage.

The 827 points that Cole scored as a sophomore are the fourth most in a season in school history. He also owns the second and third most three-point makes at Northeast with 91 in his final campaign and 75 as a newcomer.

Robert Gordon continued what became a playing and coaching career in the sport of baseball that spanned more than 35 years as a student-athlete at Northeast Mississippi Community College in the early 1990s.

The Tigers got hot and so did Gordon down the home stretch of the 1992 season. Northeast captured its final eight regular season games to secure its first then-MACJC North Division crown in over two decades.

The New Albany native was one of the Tigers’ top performers as a freshman with a .306 batting average, four triples and 16 RBIs. However, Gordon’s productivity increased even more during his final campaign at Northeast.

Gordon, who was the only returning position player in 1993, led the Tigers in most every major offensive statistical category. He had a .344 batting average with nine doubles, three home runs and 32 RBIs. He added five triples, which is still tied for the second most in a single season at Northeast. Gordon was recognized by head coach Ray Scott with the team MVP, best batting average and the Tiger awards.

Gordon obtained NJCAA All-Region 23 distinction as a sophomore and was a two-time all-conference recipient.

He completed his on-field career by earning NAIA All-American honors at Union (Tenn.) University.

Lisa Jansen is one of several international standouts that helped the Northeast Mississippi Community College softball program develop a solid foundation during its first decade after the switch from slowpitch to fastpitch competition.

She obtained first-team all-conference distinction as a freshman with a 10-8 mark in the circle. Jansen had a team-best 122 strikeouts in 113.2 innings of work with a 4.37 earned run average (ERA).

Jansen’s numbers improved significantly during her second campaign at Northeast.

The 196 strikeouts that she threw that year still stands as the second most punch outs in a single season in program history.

She went 13-6 in 29 appearances during the Tigers’ run to the 2008 MACJC North Division championship. Jansen received NJCAA All-Region 23 and all-conference honors for her role in Northeast’s seventh all-time divisional title.

Her 318 strikeouts are the second most ever over a career at Northeast. Jansen’s other cumulative statistics while with the Tigers include a 23-14 record, 241.1 innings and a 3.66 ERA in 62 outings.

Jansen continued her playing career at Mississippi Valley State University.

She also represented her home country of Germany on its national team during the 2009 European Championships in Valencia, Spain.

PURPOSE: To recognize the achievement of an outstanding Northeast alumnus who has excelled personally and professionally, making a continued and significant difference in their community on a local, state, national, or international level.

CRITERIA: 1. Individual must be an alumnus of Northeast Mississippi Junior/Community College. An alumnus is any person that has a verifiable academic transcript with the college.

2. Award is presented to the alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding traits of leadership and character to such an extent that it has brought great credit to the recipient and to the alma mater.

A. Completed nomination form B. A written nomination letter explaining why the nominee should be considered for the award and summarizing the nominee’s collegiate, professional accomplishments, and community involvement. (community service, awards, organizations, etc.)

C. At least two letters of support

3. Nominee is distinguished in his/her chosen profession.

D. Electronic headshot of the nominee

4. The accomplishments to be recognized may be achieved through the nominee’s career, service, or volunteer efforts.

SELECTION AND AWARD PROCESS: The Northeast Alumni Relations Council members will review and select from the nomination documents.

A maximum of five individuals will be inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame each year.

5. Nominee has demonstrated a high level of integrity in his/her personal life and has gained the recognition of various other persons around him/her.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS INCLUDE: 6. Preference will be given to nominees who have demonstrated continuing interest in and support of Northeast through contribution of time, talent, or resources.

NOMINATION PROCESS: 1. Nominations can be initiated by anyone including the nominee. All nominations must be received in an electronic (email) written format and include the following:

Amelia Gardner, an alumna of Northeast Mississippi Community College, has carved a creative path as an educator over the past 18 years. As a member of the 2002 Hall of Fame, her commitment to excellence shines through in her role as an art teacher at Booneville High School. Gardner’s true passion lies in nurturing young artists, fostering their creativity, and instilling a deep appreciation for the arts in all her students. She has a unique ability to see the world through a creative lens, which enables her to inspire her students to explore their own artistic potential. Gardner believes in the power of lifelong learning and the transformative impact of education. Her dedication to her craft extends beyond the classroom, as she actively engages with the community, sharing her love for art and encouraging artistic expression through various initiatives.

In her personal life, Gardner is happily married to Guy Gardner, a Northeast Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Together, they are proud parents to two daughters, Claire and Lottie.

Football, Fireworks, & Fun

The Northeast Mississippi Community College Development Foundation and Alumni Association joined in on the October 13th gameday fun by setting up a tent and handing out giveaways to the community during the Tigertown Tailgate.

Later that evening, thanks to the generous donations of the 2022 Athletic All-Star Sponsors, the Development Foundation and Alumni Association presented a fireworks show during halftime of the Tiger football game verses East Mississippi.

EMPLOYEE ENHANCEMENT GRANT Northeast Mississippi Community College Development Foundation Board of Directors allocated $15,000 for Employee Enhancement grants during 2022. These funds are fully funded through the contributions of the Northeast employees. 2022 T.I.P./T.O.P. AWARD WINNERS Patrick Eaton, VP & Executive Director of the Northeast Development Foundation, and the Foundation Board of Directors awarded the 2022 T.I.P/T.O.P. Awards. Because of the continued dedication and commitment to Northeast, the Northeast Development Foundation created the T.I.P/ T.O.P. (“Tremendous Individual Performance” and “Teaching Outstanding Performance”) Awards. The T.I.P. Awards program is designed to recognize “Tremendous Individual Performance” for non-administrative staff members of Northeast Mississippi Community College. The T.O.P. award is given to one outstanding faculty member from each of the academic divisions who show innovative teaching methods.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Northeast Development Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, which establishes policy for all its functions – fundraising, public relations, administration, accounting and investments. The Board of Directors of the Northeast Development Foundation is composed of twenty members, which are made up from the five county areas the college serves. Firms, corporations, and individuals may become members of the Northeast Development Foundation subject to approval by the entire board.
