Meeting the local job loss challenge Sara Hollyman With job loss inevitable for many locals in the wake of Covid-19, some have already been forced to think outside the box, or search for work in other industries. Dylan Phillips and his wife Jenna welcomed their son Hudson into the family just 8 months ago. He joined 3-year-old brother Boston, with Dylan promising his wife she could stay at home with the kids for as long as she wanted to. So, when news of redundancies broke at Air New Zealand, where he currently works as a structural composite engineer at Nelson’s maintenance facility, it threw a spanner in the works. “It was pretty hard,” Dylan says. “I looked over my bills and started to look at options like getting an apprenticeship and retraining to do something else. But with a young family, reality kicked in that I really couldn’t afford to do that at the moment.” So, Dylan instead decided to start his own business, Dylan Phillips Fibreglass Repairs. With eight years’ experience and having called Nelson home for most of his life, he expects the

demand to be “pretty strong”. “I’m hoping to do a lot of work on paddleboards and things like that, as well as boats, motorhomes surfboards.” Dylan’s move comes as the Government announces that fulltime workers who lost their job because of the economic impact of Covid-19 will be eligible for tax-free weekly payments of almost $500 a week for a period of 12 weeks. It is expected to cost the Government about $570 million. It will be welcome news to many, with the Nelson region seeing requests for benefit payments skyrocket over the Covid-19 lockdown period. There was an almost 500 percent increase of requests on the same time last year. This time last year, only 267 people claimed assistance, however, during the lockdown period, 1586 claimed it – an increase of 496 percent. Meanwhile, chief operating officer of Nelson-based Sealord Group, Doug Paulin, says job loss in the region has also changed their employee landscape. “Traditionally, Sealord recruits 80 per cent of hoki season workers

Civic House may be an eyesore to some, but Bevan Woodward sees it as a blank canvas. The local project manager has a vision to turn the iconic 1970s building into a work of art that “celebrates” Nelson. “It was a Covid-19 lockdown idea that I wanted to get on with. I thought, ‘lets have some fun with this building'’.” With its feature clock tower, the building was designed by the Ministry of Works and Development and Athfield Architects provided the working drawings. However, Bevan firmly believes it's time the old girl got a makeover and has made a submission to Nelson City Council’s annual plan to get the ball rolling. Bevan says he’s not an artist, and the “exact look” of the building is not his focus. “However, I see a robust process we can enjoy whether that includes design competitions or a people’s

About 420 of those were from Nelson Tasman.” Doug says 52 of those locals had been laid off from their jobs. A man has admitted using a vehicle carelessly causing the death of 78-year-old Wakefield man Kevin John Edwards in a crash in Brightwater earlier this year. Kevin spent nine days in a critical condition before he died from his injuries at Christchurch Hospital on February 3. Reinald Bongnaim pleaded guilty to two charges of careless or inconsiderate vehicle operation causing injury and one of causing death in the Nelson District Court on Monday. The 35-year-old Vanuatu national, is in New Zealand on a seasonal employment visa and was granted a full Vanuatuan licence four months before arriving in New Zealand. He admitted not having much driving experience here. On January 25, Bongnaim set out in a Toyota Avensis for a day out at Nelson Lakes alongside his female passenger. When he came to the intersection of Lord Rutherford Rd and SH6 at 10.25am, a road he had not travelled before, he pulled out into the path of an oncoming Toyota Corolla. That car was being driven by

Kevin’s wife, with his eightyear-old granddaughter in the front passenger seat and he seated directly behind his wife. The police summary of facts told how the Corolla was travelling at an estimated speed of 100kph. Kevin’s wife tried to brake but had nowhere to go. It collided with the passenger door of Bongnaim’s vehicle and witnesses recounted how both vehicles appeared to lift off the ground about one foot upon the heavy impact. Members of the public provided first aid until emergency services arrived on the scene. Kevin was conscious but dazed. Upon arrival at Nelson Hospital, he was triaged as being in a critical condition with severe bone fractures and
internal bleeding. He was transferred to Christchurch Intensive Care Unit where he later died. His wife suffered severe bruising to her torso, legs and face, as well as stiffness and whiplash. Their granddaughter had heavy bruising and abrasions to her collarbone, chest and hips. Bongnaim was not injured and his passenger suffered minor injuries. When spoken to by police, Bongnaim was very emotional and apologetic. He told them he had looked right and saw the car coming but thought he had enough time. He looked left then pulled out. Judge Garry Barkle convicted Bongnaim of all three charges. He will be sentenced on July 21.

Plans to clear surgery backlog Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Just over half the elective surgeries planned for April went ahead at Nelson Hospital under Alert Level 4, with the ways to clear the backlog now being planned. According to Lexie O’Shea, general manager clinical services at Nelson Marlborough Health,
459 out of the 839 procedures they had planned went ahead. In response to Covid-19, all healthcare services were reprioritised, except for all urgent and non-deferrable surgery procedures and assessments. Lexie says they now seeing a steady increase in the number of non-urgent surgeries, procedures, and outpatient visits.
“The length of time to clear the backlog will depend on the resources available, for example, facilities, equipment and staff. “Many of our outpatient clinics are continuing to be run using virtual health or telephone consultations where appropriate.” For example, paediatric out patients successfully converted their diabetes clinic into a virtual
clinic via Zoom following the lockdown. She says several clinical areas have been gearing up for virtual health consultations and are well placed to move to this format in future. “NMH is also exploring ways streamline our outpatient settings to also reduce the number of people in waiting rooms to reduce physical contact.”

After eight long, dry weeks, thirsty patrons are flocking back to their local watering holes, however the pub scene has a very different look under Level 2 restrictions. The dance floors are cordoned off, tables spaced well part and there is a sign in sheet at the door. For regulars such as Caleb Mckenzie-Hays, it's been a long wait. The fisherman came home from sea mid-way through the lockdown and was eager to get back to his drinking spot at the Rattle and Hum. However, Caleb was forced to drink beer from the confinement of his home.
"Not being able to go to the pub has been pretty s*****, you like to go out and do something and see the girls." Upon re-opening last Thursday, Caleb was one of the first through the doors and back in his stool with a pint in hand. He says it was great to be back among some familiar faces on Bridge St. "I have missed the vibe, people having a good time and connecting with that." Industry Bar and Nightclub owner Corey Taylor says his venue isn't well suited to the new normal and anticipates a slow start after re-opening. Homeless site closes down
Nelson Tasman Civil Defence has closed down a temporary accommodation site at Neale Park, designed to help the local homeless population during Covid-19 lockdown. At Covid-19 Alert Levels 3 and 4, people were required to stay in one location and to maintain their bubbles. Civil Defence worked with various agencies to assist those that did not have a permanent place to stay, providing accommodation at various locations around the city. Neale Park was one location that was set up, with 11 caravans being used over five weeks, in cooperation with Nelson City Council who owns the land. Now that the alert level has changed, the caravans are no longer needed. They are now being returned to the hire companies and the security fencing around the area is being removed. Civil Defence says it is working with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Ministry of Social Development, the Nelson Tasman District Health Board and Housing First to ensure that people with long-term housing needs are appropriately supported moving forward.

Nelson artist threatened after ‘disrespectful’ painting A Nelson artist has received verbal threats and online comments about setting her gallery on fire over a painting depicting non-Maori women with moko. Nikki Romney said the painting, Taking Tikanga to the World, shows a globally diverse group of young women wearing non-traditional moko against the backdrop of a famous portrait by Charles Goldie. It was inspired, she said, by tourists visiting her gallery and proudly displaying Maori tattoos and an app developed by Te Wananga O Aotearoa for people to create a digital image of their
face with "non-traditional" moko. Romney has been slammed on social media for the "disrespectful" work and said yesterday a man came into her gallery accusing her of being a "f****** racist Pākehā" and threatened to burn her gallery down. Police said they had received a report of a man entering the gallery and being verbally aggressive, but there were limited lines of inquiry to identify him as there was no CCTV coverage. Among the hundreds of messages on social media about the painting are a handful of comments about burning the

Bubble breaker convicted Sara Hollyman A man who was twice warned about breaching lockdown restrictions, has been convicted after breaking his bubble for a third time. Jackson Thomas Bohanna, 20, was charged with obstructing a medical officer of health after police found him breaking his bubble for a third time during Alert Level 4. On April 7 he was found travelling in a vehicle on Waimea Rd with three others from three different bubbles. Police took an educative approach
and reminded the vehicle's occupants of the Level 4 lockdown rules. The following day Bohanna was once again found travelling with three people in a vehicle and was once again warned of the rules. On April 17 he was then seen by police at an address on Westbrook Tce. Bohanna was arrested a short time later. He told police he had left his lockdown address after an argument with his mother. Bohanna plead guilty and was sentenced to 80 hours community work.

Staying safe with buried power cables around your home Broadgreen Intermediate Students in Room 3 have been using the Waimea and Nelson Weekly to become more engaged with their local community. Photo: Matt McCrorie.
Students use newspapers to connect to community Matt McCrorie When local teacher Shaz Murray prepared to head back to school after weeks in isolation, she had several goals. Getting students off their screens and connecting with each other were the main ones, but more than that, she wanted to get her students connected to their local community. It wasn’t until the first week of Alert Level 3, when she was reading the Nelson Weekly, that she thought of a way to engage her students with their community. For the term, Shaz’s class, Room 3 at Broadgreen Intermediate had been focusing on ‘Turangawaewae; The place where we stand’ and learning about the importance of being connected to your local community. “I was aware that kids were spending a huge amount of their time on devices – which was great, but I wanted to get them back into having conversations, and our term
focus has been connecting with the community.” Shaz says that one of the topics her students have been studying is ‘How community newspapers have helped the community throughout and after the lockdown.’
“A lot of our learning has been around local community stories in the papers, and getting the students connected to ‘the place where they stand’ which is their local area, and the community papers have been a great way to do that.”
So, Shaz picked up a stack of Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly papers, and got her students reading. “A lot of our learning has been around local community stories in the papers, and getting the students connected to ‘the place where they stand’ which is their local area, and the community papers have been a great way to do that.” The whiteboard in Room 3 is covered in comments the students have made about how community papers have been helpful during the Covid crisis, with ideas like: ‘Inspiring us with positive stories,’ ‘Telling people where they can get help,’ and ‘Encouraging us to think local and support local businesses.’ “It’s been a huge focus of our learning, thinking about how we are connected to our community and all the benefits that come with that connection. From there we've since discussed ways we can become more connected to our communities, by giving back to it.”
Many of us know that Contractors have to look out for buried power cables when they are doing roadworks. But did you know that there might be power cables buried around your house as well. Many houses built since the 1980s have underground power supplies. This means there may be an underground power cable (your service line) connecting your house to the network cables that run under the strip of land between your house and the road.

Buried cables can present a serious and potentially fatal hazard if you damage them. You should always check for buried cables before digging and before driving stakes, fence posts or warratahs into the ground on your property or in the strip of land between your property and the road. Unsure where cables are located? We can advise property owners whether there are buried service lines or network cables on or near your property. Nelsonians have spoken - and they want compost. An overwhelming 93 submissions in support of a kerbside food waste collection trial have been made to Nelson City Council’s annual plan. An initial 220 households would take part in the 12-month trial at cost of $120,000 - funded from council’s climate change reserve. If approved, it could begin early in the 2020/21 financial year. “Participating households will be provided with a food waste container and receive a weekly collection service,” says council’s group manager infrastructure, Alec Louverdis. “The collected food waste will include meat and dairy as well as vegetable matter from the kitchen but is not intended to include garden waste.” The selection of households to participate will be on a random basis. Organic matter contributes significantly to emissions from landfills, with 8,000 tonnes of food waste going to landfill

Nelson not-for-profit organisation, Community Compost, is the trial’s biggest supporter and is hoping to be selected to deliver it using their proven system and locally developed compost tumbler, bEartha. They have produced 65 tonnes of compost in their three years in operation, collecting food waste from events, businesses and households. Community Compost codirector Shea Dawson backs the trial.
We’re currently only rescuing only 0.4 per cent of the food waste that still goes to landfill every week in Nelson.” Alec says its “fantastic” to see so many submissions in favour of proposal. “The food waste trial is a really exciting, forward-thinking project. It is sustainable and supports our community, whilst it also helps to protect and preserve the future of our environment. We look forward to seeing how we can progress it further if it is adopted.” In total, there were 282 submissions in total to the annual plan.

Locals asked to ‘walk the chalk’ Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
As Nelsonians return to the city centre, they are being asked to follow the chalk arrows to encourage safe social distancing. Councillor Pete Rainey says Nelson’s newly reopened businesses need community support. He says it is still important that locals follow the Government’s 2-metre physical distancing guidelines. However, with our central city footpaths being 3 metres wide, keeping left, where practical, will help pedestrians maintain a safe distance from each other. “Simple things like keeping left on the footpath and where that’s not possible, waiting for the space on the right-hand side to clear before proceeding, are easy, commonsense steps we can all take to help each other as we all find our way again after the Covid-19 shutdown.” To help, a small number of chalk arrows have been stencilled on the footpaths of Trafalgar, Bridge
and Hardy Streets – areas home to Nelson’s highest amount of foot traffic. Chief medical officer for Nelson Marlborough Health, Dr Nick Baker, says it is important people continue to practice physical distancing. “Businesses, restaurants and schools are going to great effort to give people the space they need to stay out of each other’s ‘moist breath zone’, so we need to play our part when out shopping and exercising and enjoying our parks and playgrounds again.” Nick says as more people return to the streets, it was important they felt safe, particularly the elderly and vulnerable members of our community. “We cannot contact trace casual contacts from footpaths so it is important to keep spacing to limit the risks. Keeping left can improve flow and safety on footpaths just as it does on the roads.” He says as we move down the alert levels, people would be coming into contact with more people, in more places.

Your Voice Covid-19 shows flaws with city’s recycling system: Working in the business, I can honestly say that 90 per cent of people have no idea how to recycle properly, thinking all plastics are recyclable. Many rejection stickers will be on yellow bins in July as the council will only accept 1, 2 and 5 grades. Smart Environmental has just spent 500k on a new automated plant, but no system can run without human contact. Nick Mather I’m surprised at her apparent disbelief that it keeps happening. In all honesty, Covid-19 highlighted nothing. She had the exact same message beforehand. “Can’t handle it” has equated to bury it or burn it for forever. Jacob Wadsworth Landfill fees set to increase: Great news. The costs need to be met by those dumping their waste. Also, the main impact is actually on those dumping shredded tyres into our landfill. We get charged $5 extra to 'recycle' our old tyres when we get new ones, but they often end up in landfill - that's what's not right. A tyre product stewardship system is on its way and then the industry will have to find a sustainable option for dealing with tyres. Designing out waste creates more jobs than dumping stuff into a hole. Karen Driver

Amazingly, the tyre industry years ago wanted the Government to introduce recycling programmes for tyres, but the government denied it. This has been going on for years. These tyres can be used in building earth ships. But wait and watch for illegal dumping of rubbish - people would rather drive out to Wairoa Gorge to dump their rubbish than pay extra at the tip. Frances Minogue Richmond is a lot cheaper than the Nelson dump; I can tell you, $3 - $8 usually based on weight. Danielle Hennessy Stuff this. Gonna burn my rubbish - it’s cheaper to get a permit! John Harris It cost me $53 to dispose of a wooden outdoor chair, a single foam mattress and a kid’s walker with an old grapevine thrown on top. When he told me I laughed, but he was dead serious. This is the second time I felt really overcharged. The other time it was $20 or $30 for one Christmas tree. Lisa Wakelin That will offset the three people NCC will have to employ to go out and pick rubbish up from reserves and roadside dumping. Do you not think these activities will increase? It’s rife now, without a price hike. Merrick Allan
A Nelson waterfront bistro has once again been the victim of a truck drive by, damaging its front sign. Harbour Light Bistro owner Stephen Coyne says the timing of the incident in the wake of the national lockdown will hurt them. It was 8am on last Tuesday morning when a loud bang woke up the restaurant's neighbours. No one saw what happened but due to the height of the sign it was clear a truck had hit the building and caused the damage. Stephen says this is not the first instance of a hit and run at the bistro. "We have had a quote of $1300 which we can ill-afford right now and the kick is the sign just got repaired three months ago." Stephen is still hopeful the driver will take responsibility. Photo: Jonty Dine Of course, it's common sense, everyone will be struggling with the cost of living so obviously the best course of action, raise the prices. Nelson Matters National’s new leadership team of Todd Muller and Nikki Kaye gives Nelson and New Zealand a real and serious choice about how we recover from the economic fallout from Covid-19. The hundreds of local job losses already has Nelson and Tasman topping the wrong charts. The Ministry of Social Development has unemployment benefits up 500% on last year and growing faster than other regions. Nelson’s Economic Development Agency says the fallout has just begun forecasting a loss of 4,000 local jobs in the next year. Forecasts also predict hundreds of Nelson businesses to go broke. Todd Muller’s first statement as National’s leader shows he gets
the scale of the economic challenge facing regions like Nelson saying “The election will be about the economy, but not the economy the bureaucracy talks about. It will be about the economy you live in – your job, your main street, your marae, your tourism businesses, your football club, your local butcher, your kura, your netball courts, your farms, your shops and your families.” Actions speak louder than words. Senior politicians like to take on glamorous portfolios like the Arts (Jacinda Ardern) Sports (Grant Robertson) and Tourism (John Key). That Todd Muller has chosen the Small Business portfolio shows grit.
His commitment is to support the recovery of New Zealand’s 500,000 small businesses, including 8,000 in our region. Todd’s background from a kiwifruit orcharding family also includes leadership roles in Fonterra, Zespri and the avocado industry. He gets horticulture and exporting that are so important to Nelson. His time on the Waikato University Council and as a Director of Plant and Food Research shows he is future focussed and values science. His statement that “I’m not interested in opposition for opposition’s sake” is consistent with his leadership in persuading National to support the Government’s Climate Change Commission
bureaucracy and simply not built to cope with the sort of increases in unemployment we're experiencing here in Nelson as highlighted in the Nelson Weekly article. It's time for a modern, simple and fair tax and welfare system. We can achieve that with a fully costed, tax neutral universal basic income. $13,000/year tax free UBI for 18 - 65 (and $2,080/year tax free UBI for children). legislation. New Deputy Leader Nikki Kaye is a talented woman who will be a powerful voice for young people and our urban communities. She comfortably beat Jacinda Ardern in 2011 and 2014 for the Auckland Central Electorate. She is a genetic scientist, lawyer, accomplished athlete and recently recovered from breast cancer. She has had ministerial experience in Education, Civil Defence and ACC. National is best placed to lead Nelson and New Zealand’s economic recovery. We did it in the 1990s when unemployment soared to 10% post the 1987 crash and again in 2013s post the Global Financial Crisis, restoring jobs, growth and pros-
perity. The problem for the current Government is they don’t understand business and believe big spending is the answer to every woe. They are great at bold announcements like the 100,000 Kiwibuild homes, Auckland Light Rail or a Billion Trees Programme but have proved unable to deliver. National will be outlining our clear plans to save jobs and rebuild the economy in the coming weeks. My new role in Todd Muller’s line up is working with Amy Adams on these Covid-19 recovery policies. Our focus is on how we stem job losses, restore business confidence and get Nelson and New Zealand working again. Advert.

Locally owned automotive workshop offers huge range of services In 2012, Tyres and More just sold tyres and had only one staff member. Now in 2020, Tyres and More has a fully equipped workshop and employs ten amazing staff that can complete virtually any automotive task. Their “one stop shop" philosophy is designed to reduce the time and effort clients spend maintaining their personal and fleet vehicles. This frees up time for their customers to spend on other work that they would consider to be more important or enjoyable. While the team at Tyres and More have a particular passion for European, Classic and race cars, they also complete brake, clutch, gearbox and engine servicing and rebuilding, carry out electrical repairs and diagnostics work, vehicle restoration, fleet servicing and warranty work. While they love all this mechanical and electrical work, they also still provide a full range of tyre sizes and brands to meet any need, and a complete a very thorough wheel alignment service. Constant investment into high tech equipment has influenced every
part of the business, including an array of hi-tech test equipment and diagnostic tools to reduce car repair times and provide the best repair solutions available. Their latest purchase is a new software system that allows technicians to add photographs and video visualisations to invoices and quotes, while also recording all the relevant information with voice to text software. A major benefit to this system is its ability to easily programme and send out customer specific text and email reminders well in advance of any upcoming car maintenance or safety work. If you would like to know more about just what Tyres and More can do for you, much of their work is shown on Facebook. They currently display over 3000 photographs and have a perfect 5 out of 5 Facebook review rating. Their page can be found by searching for Tyres and More, 36 St Vincent Street, Nelson on Facebook. Retail giants’ exciting move to purpose-built premises There’s been an exciting development in Nelson city in recent weeks – retail giants Briscoes and Rebel Sport have recently shifted to a fantastic site on Vanguard St and are now operating from their brand-new premises which is modern, spacious and functional. Briscoes and Rebel Sport are longstanding trusted retailers of brands that kiwis all know and love. The main driver of the relocation was requiring more retail space. “We are thrilled about the move,” says Briscoe Group Managing Director, Rod Duke. “We had outgrown our stores in Montgomery Square where there was no ability to expand. Customer parking is an important driver for us; we wanted to relocate to a site that provided ample access and convenience.” The new sites share a large parking
the business at least four times as a result of the great opportunity with the establishment of Rebel Sport in the region in 2003. Rebel Sport first operated alongside Briscoes in Montgomery Square until the big shift to Vanguard Street.
‘A great addition for the city fringe’
The newly completed Briscoes-Rebel Sport building opened for their first day of trading on May 14th. facility with neighbouring tenants Countdown, the Warehouse, City Fitness and Kitchen Things. Other key drivers which prompted the move were practicality and efficiency, with nearby stores al-
lowing Briscoes and Rebel to utilise a shared stockroom for both brands which is much larger, and which enables their staff to work between each store with ease.
Longstanding presence in Nelson Both stores had their first day of trading on May 14th when we entered level 2 and were able to open to the public. “Although we haven’t set a date yet, we are planning an official

opening in the not too distant future,” says Rod. Briscoes and Rebel Sport have been operating in Nelson for the past 17-20 years and has created longstanding employment opportunities for people living in the region. “Today we have a strong, dedicated local team of 41 who are ambassadors across both the Briscoes and Rebel Sport stores and subsequently, we have brought all of our existing staff members across to our new location.” Rod says in the last two decades, they have relocated
The new premises was purpose-built for Briscoe Group by Gibbons in association with constructors Gibbons Naylor. Briscoes (NZ) brought the sites they last traded from, which was the 3255sq m Rutherford Street property, from the Nelson RSA for $1.75 million in 2002. The Briscoes store was sold some time ago, and the Rebel Sport store has been recently sold to Gibbons Holdings. The building work at the new site (which is also owned by Gibbons Holdings) commenced onsite in April 2019 and took around 12 months to complete so they were ready for the Rebel Sport and Briscoes fitouts. “The project went very smoothly,” says Rod. “However, the lockdown for us meant that we were not able to complete our store set up for planned opening, which was originally scheduled for the 2nd of April.”

We are very pleased with how the building has come together,” says Simon Dobson, Development Project Manager for Gibbons. “More importantly, we take our satisfaction in that Gibbons were able to provide a bespoke solution for the Briscoe Group who wanted to stay and reinvest in Nelson but needed a better location for their business. Credit goes to Briscoe Group for recommitting to Nelson with these two stores, we hope the locals support them. I'm sure all those involved from within Gibbons, our consultants and the construction team also feel proud of what has been achieved for the city.” Simon says it’s a great addition to the city fringe. “That’s where large format retail is supposed to be, it plays a key role in supporting the CBD, so for Nelson it’s really positive for them to be in this area and great for existing retail in the vicinity too.” Simon says it was a 12-month build which was completed just at the time Covid hit. “The project went smoothly really, – there were no major challenges that as a collective we couldn't overcome along the way.” Simon says Gibbons
look to our local subcontractors for their expertise. “Having their support is imperative to the delivery of any project and they again were key to the success here, so a big thanks to them and our consultants."
Trading since the 1860’s The iconic retail store, Briscoes Homeware, started out as an 18th century trading company which began selling in Dunedin in 1862. Although today the store is well known for its homeware products, it began life as a hardware retailer supplying prospectors during the gold rush with shovels, picks, tents and lanterns in the early 1860s. “Briscoes brought the best manufactured goods of the world to our shores and became the first international mercantile business to establish a presence here,” says author and business historian Dr Ian Hunter. From those humble beginnings, the company has grown to be a household name New Zealanders know today and now boasts 46 stores throughout the country. Dr Hunter says Briscoes’ rapid expansion was tightly connected
to the country’s economic progress, as it became a major supplier for government contracts to construct bridges, railroads, stations, telegraph lines, water systems and tunnels to name a few.” Fast forward to the 1990s, under Rod Duke’s leadership, Briscoes ditched selling toys, boats and building products to focus on becoming the country’s leading retailer in homewares and on swapping the chain’s industrial image for a more customer-friendly retail destination. The first Rebel Sport store was opened in Panmure, Auckland in 1996. The concept was of a sports superstore where shoppers could choose from a huge range of the biggest and best brands in the world which was, and is still as, unique. Part of the Briscoe Group of companies, Rebel Sport has stores nationwide including its Nelson location. When asked what makes Briscoes and Rebel stand out from their competitors in today’s market, Rod says, “it’s a simple formula. We stand out because we have a longstanding reputation of selling high quality, trusted brands for discounted prices,

‘You’ll never buy better’ is the motto that has defined the success and longevity of Briscoes for the many decades it has provided New Zealand homes with quality products and services. Over the years the range of homeware has expanded and today in 2020, the selection is huge! Locals love to shop in the Nelson Briscoes store; it’s where they can find everything they need for their home from the large variety of homeware categories: Bed and Bath, Electrical, Kitchen and Dining, Cleaning and Laundry, Bags and Luggage, Decorating, Outdoor Living, Furniture and Storage and more. Some people prefer to shop by brand and there are a multitude to choose from including: Bodum, Breville, Hampton and Mason, Jamie Oliver, Simon Gault, Kas, Kenwood, Panasonic, Philips, Prestige, Russell Hobbs, Remington, Royal

Doulton, Sunbeam, Urban Loft, Wiltshire and Zip, just to name a few. More often people purchase for practical reasons – maybe your toaster has stopped working or your vacuum cleaner has died and locals have come to rely on Briscoes, knowing that the item they require will soon pop up in one its weekly sales promotions, with great discounts off the retail price! Every week the specials change – this week it might be ½ price on dinner sets, glassware, storage boxes and wall mirrors, next week it might be 60 percent off all cushions, pillows, blankets, and electric jugs. You will enjoy visiting the spacious new premises on Vanguard Street where one of the friendly team will be more than happy to help you find the item you are looking for and it’s also a great place to go for inspiration if you are buying a gift or decorating your new or existing home. Whether you are shopping instore or online, purchasing items at Briscoes is a breeze, however people are reminded that during the level 2 lockdown, customers MUST maintain 2m separation. Although retail stores no longer have a limit of customers allowed into their stores, Briscoes will
only limit numbers if they cannot comfortably maintain 2m separation between customers instore. The same rules apply for Rebel Sport next door. Because the health and safety of their customers and their staff is their top priority, hand sanitiser is provided for customers upon entry and both stores are providing Contactless Payment (Tap & Go) and customers are being asked to pack their own bags. They will also be providing a Contactless Click and Collect service in the near future. For full details about the Briscoe Group’s H & S measures during alert level 2, visit the Briscoes or Rebel websites. With regards to any online purchases, customers are advised their parcels could be delayed by up 7- 10 days due the Covid backlog.

Briscoes Nelson Business Manager, Marlene Cockburn says the customers are really enjoying the new space and the new atmosphere. “It’s a lot more user-friendly and a lot brighter.” Marlene, who oversees both the Briscoes team and Rebel Sport team in Nelson says once they started shifting pre lockdown, but they were a week into and had to stop from there. “Once we went into level three, we could start shifting again, but we had to continue the store setup with our immediate team; we couldn’t bring back the setup team that had travelled from various stores around New Zealand. So, it’s been a pretty full-on couple of weeks and a lot of hard work by both teams at Briscoes and Rebel Sport to prepare the stores ready to open.” Marlene says they have a lot more space now to put out more stock. “We’ve got a bigger back of house which has been fantastic which can fit all of our stock.” Marlene says it’s great to have all the same staff who have come over from their previous location. “They are always customer focussed, always interacting with people as

With more freedoms now that we’re in alert level 2, locals will have been contemplating how they will spend their time over Queen’s Birthday weekend. This year, to mark the Queen’s special day, our public holiday takes place on Monday, June 1st. Fortunately, because there have been no new Covid cases linked to the relaxed restrictons in level 2, it’s great that some of these rules have been eased around social gatherings. From midday on Friday, May 29th, up to 100 people will be allowed to attend weddings, funerals, and church services. It will also apply to hospitality venues although these places will still need to keep tables separated and enforce social distancing. But don’t let that stop you from heading out to your local bar or
restaurant – go out and enjoy a nice meal with friends or family members and at the same time support Nelson hospitality businesses, just remember to toast the Queen while you’re there! For those who would like to hold a private party this weekend, that’s fine too, you’ll just need to keep a list of who is invited. It’s been great to see lots of locals out and about enjoying some shopping in level 2, and with so many retailers now open again for business, the long weekend is the ideal opportunity to stock up on warm winter clothing, footwear, heaters, hotties, blankets, toastie makers, knitting kneedles, music, books, hardware, electronic gear or whatever you need to get you through the cold months ahead! Right now, we are all heeding the call to ‘buy local’ which is fan-
Natureland tastic, but we’ll need to keep our foot on the peddle if we want to keep our economy pumping. A long weekend is the perfect opportunity to get away for a short break so why not consider one of our local accommodation offers up for grabs? Simply hop on the Nelson Tasman Tourism website which is brimming with getaway specials to divine locations such as the
Abel Tasman National Park and Kaiteriteri beach. Plus there’s heaps of discounts for activities like kayaking, skydiving or sightseeing. Speaking of the outdoors, Nelson has lots of beautiful parks to meander around and a myriad walking tracks and bike trails to be discovered. Giants to fly to Auckland for season Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Mike Pero Nelson Giants will salvage a 2020 season, however, it will be away from home and could feature some new faces in the squad. The New Zealand NBL will tip off in Auckland on 23 June, featuring seven teams that will compete for the 2020 Championship. The Auckland Huskies, Canterbury Rams, Franklin Bulls, Manawatu Jets, Nelson Giants, Otago Nuggets and Taranaki Mountainairs will play up to three games per week, over six weeks. All teams will be based in Auckland, however, packing up and moving north for six weeks is not an option for all players. Giants veteran Sam Dempster has two young sons and is yet to decide whether he can be a part of the 2020 season. “I am very keen to, it sounds like a fun thing to be a part of, however, with family and commitments

who opts not to travel will not have his position jeopardised for 2021. “It’s really just going to come down to individuals. It will be easy for some but not possible for others so it’s just about reassuring them it won’t have any
detrimental effect for 2021.” Mike says they will look to keep those who stay behind involved as much as possible. “We want to keep them part of team.” Mike says while the situation is not ideal, the world is a different place at the moment. “We would obviously prefer to be able to play at home in front of our fans and families but that’s just not possible, I think it’s an interesting alternative and the guys are excited.” Another exciting innovation is the introduction of a player draft. The draft that will see 84 players selected by the seven teams on Thursday 11 June. Not only is it a first-ever for New Zealand's premier basketball league, but it also comes with a unique set of rules that require plenty of strategic thinking by coaches and players alike. Anyone that went to school in Nelson for three years or lived here for ten, is eligible, “For us there are a bunch of guys in that category eligible for us to
pick up.” This means we could see the likes of Max Darling donning a Giants jersey this year. Mike says he and the squad are itching to get back on court after the “longest pre-season in history”. “We have had two months off with guys just doing their own training, so they are keen to get back into it.” He is confident that, despite the disruption, Nelson will step up. “We will give it a good go, I’m sure everyone will put their hand up.” A Nelson City Council spokesperson says that the closure of the Trafalgar Centre during the lockdown period fell right in the heart of what would have been the Giants season, which was also a blow for Giants’ fans. However, Nelson City Council is looking at ways to keep the Trafalgar Centre busy during this period and will take alternative bookings as restrictions under alert levels allow.

Waimea flyer raring to go Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
For many players like Waimea flyer Michael Stringer, the wait to get back on the footy field has been a long one. The 21-year-old says it’s been tough not training with teammates for almost ten weeks now. New Zealand Rugby has developed ‘Return to Rugby Requirements’ which apply to all levels of the game. All community and club rugby
must follow the three stages of preparation, prepare to train, prepare to play and play. Phase One is still in effect meaning training has yet to resume with a return date to competition earmarked for mid-June. Michael says even without the team environment, he has motivated himself to stay fit and keep his skills sharp. “During lockdown I still managed to do some hill running and get to the field for some kicking and sprinting.” However, Michael was unable
to train for the physicality of premier rugby. “Contact was the hardest skill to keep up and will take a bit for the body to get used to again.” Despite the disruption Michael is confident his side will reestablish itself among the competition favourites. “We have a good team and will gel again quite quickly.” Waimea enjoyed a strong 2019 culminating in an epic win over Marist in the Nelson club final and Michael is hopeful of emulating that form.
