More rates for homeowners Sara Hollyman Nelson residents will see rates rises of between 6.1 and 7.99 per cent come July despite the average rates increase being 5.7 per cent.

For those with a land value of $175,000 the increase will be $169

a year, a land value of $370,000 will see an increase of $264, and those with land value that sits at $800,000 will pay $475 more than they did this year.

Nelson’s homeowners will be paying more to help rebalance the portion of rates that commercial

properties pay compared to residential properties which is “out of kilter”.

Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says council has always taken into account all ratepayers commercial, industrial, residential and rural in the total

rates package when working out the “average”.

Rachel says commercial properties have paid half a per cent less in rates each year over the last three years and that will continue for the next three years, being reviewed annually.

“It had got out of kilter; commercial ratepayers were paying proportionately more than residential for the value of their properties.”

“Nelson Pride is really important to me,” says Aimée.

“When I came to Nelson, one of the first things I looked for was a queer-friendly place and we didn’t have much.”

Q Youth, a local support and advocacy group for young Nelsonians and their whānau, were eager to start a pride week a few years ago. Though after some deliberation they realised they didn’t have the funds or resources to put that plan into motion.

Now in 2021, Nelson Pride has taken the reins and from

today Nelson joins the likes of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Whangarei in hosting a pride week.

“It’s important to remember that pride is about celebration but also about protest,” Aimée says. “We’re the people around you, we’re not out in the fringes.

It’s about making sure that we feel visible, it’s about waving a flag and saying ‘we are here’.”

Pride Week kicks off with a Pride History night with Nelson’s “pride pioneers” Peter Finlayson and Pete Banham as part of Tuku 21 Whakatū Heritage Month.

Peter Finlayson has been active in the queer community since the early gay liberation days in Auckland and Nelsonian Pete Banham now operates Autumn Farm, a queer accommodation venue in Takaka.

On Saturday night, Nelson will be treated to a Drag Bingo night with renowned drag queen ‘Felicity Frockaccino’.

Felicity says she is equally excited as she is surprised to hear the event sold out last week.

“I wasn’t even expecting to get bingo happening, let alone

sell-out. It’s not a big city and because Nelson is considered, dare I say, ‘conservative’, I thought it would be a long shot, but I’m so grateful and I’m really excited to come down.”

Felicity says contestants can expect “a lot of laughs and expect to leave with sore cheeks” this Saturday at Nelson Musical Theatre, who have gifted the venue free of charge.

The festivities end on Sunday with a Pride Potluck Picnic at Tāhunanui Beach - a free event open to all rainbow community members and allies.

Aimée says this week is just the beginning for Nelson Pride Week with the aim of a pride parade in coming years.

“It’s super exciting to start something for the future, we want to see pride week get bigger and bolder every year.”

Homeowners face bigger rates rise FROM PAGE 1 and 5.7 per cent is expected over the next 10 years according to the draft Long-Term Plan 202131 which is currently out for consultation. But, in reality, the rises will be more for residential property owners over the next three years, until commercial and residential balance out.

This rise includes a proposal to reduce the Uniform Annual General Charge - a fixed charge for services that every property receives, irrespective of its land value. Without this, the lowest property rates would increase by 6.7 per cent.

Rachel says it’s been the toughest Long Term Plan process yet, with three major factors influencing rates rises; Covid-19, government legislation and a re-valuation of council assets.

“It has been a hard slog; I’ve been talking with mayors all around the country and everyone’s found this really tough. Some of them are looking at much higher rates rise.”

Council debt will rise by $176 million over the 10-year period to a total of $291 million and the debt/revenue ratio will sit at 143 per cent.

Rachel says that ratio is “very low” when you put it into a country-wide context and that they could drive rates down by borrowing more, but she doesn’t feel that’s the right thing

“I don’t want to be, in 10 years, leaving a future council with a problem they can’t fix. It’s about our generation paying our fair share, but there’s no doubt about it it’s getting harder to get those books to balance, thinking about climate change.”

She says council is proposing a strong capital expenditure which will leave future Nelson with important assets.

“They’re the hidden assets that support good environmental outcomes, support development and things like safe drinking water coming out of your tap, being able to flush your toilet and knowing that the water will be dealt

with in a safe way are still the fundamentals, but they are not the only things.

“We’ve invested well and are in a good position but when we look at what’s in front of us there’s hundreds of millions of dollars to keep up with expectations of the community and to address climate change.”

She says as we look out beyond the next 10 years, it’s going to be unaffordable for local government to fund and the model from government may need to change.

“These are big dollars, and we are going to have to have other funding.”

Kaka Valley development moves to next stage Charles Anderson Editor

A controversial housing development tagged for the Kaka Valley is set to move to the next stage when the company behind the project lodges its formal applicaion later this week.

The landowners behind the proposed Maitahi / Bayview

project have advised Nelson City Council that an application for a private plan change to the Nelson District Plan will be submitted on Friday.

The application will be published on the council’s website and has 10 technical reports that explain the potential effects and benefits of implementing the plan change.

Council will then consider

the application before likely putting it out to public notification.

The development is likely to see hundreds of new homes built, starting at around $550,000 for a house and land package. The plan is to develop 315 acres of the 800 acre area into housing, a wetland area, walking and cycle tracks and native bush.

One of the landowners, Ngāti

Koata, says it is particularly excited about the opportunity for a component of affordable housing within the development.

It says that ecological values within riparian areas mostly along the Kaka Stream will also be significantly enhanced and retained as open space and esplanade reserve. There will also be an enlarged area for the Botanical Reserve and an

expanded network of walkways including the Bayview ridgeline walkway.

The process will likely garner much interest with the Save the Maitai group recently generating a 8000 signature petition against the plan.

The landowners say they look forward to the commencement of the community engagement process.

Nelson Tasman Hospice has a new CEO in the form of Tony Gray - the former head of NMIT. Tony will succeed Frans Dellebeke, who announced in January that he wished to step down once a suitable successor had been identified.

The hospice board says Tony is a very experienced senior executive, who will be well known to many in the Top of the South for his successful leadership of NMIT. He left that role in 2017 to

take up the position of chief executive at Ara Institute of Canterbury, where he is regarded as having transformed Ara “with his efforts resulting in a more collaborative, inclusive and agile operation”.

Chair of Nelson Tasman Hospice John Peters says Tony is a very experienced and wellrespected chief executive with an exceptional record.

Youth mental health wait times double

New data that shows that wait times for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Nelson and Marlborough have more than doubled over the past 3 years is misleading, says the DHBs chief medical officer.

The figures show that the average wait time for CAMHS services across 16 of the 20 district health boards increased to 33 days for the year ended July 2020, up from 21 days when Labour was elected. In the Top of the South, however, that increased from 23 days to 48 days over the past three years - among the worst in the country.

Nelson Marlborough Health’s chief medical officer Dr Nick Baker says “in a perfect world no one would ever wait for anything” but the idea of the waitlist was misleading.

He says there is a difference between someone who has urgent needs and someone who does not.

“People with urgent needs are seen urgently … it’s slightly misleading to think that wait time is all created equally.”

However, Nick says that people are still waiting longer than the DHB would like and the workload is also getting bigger, particularly amid Covid-19 anxiety.

“Covid has taken its toll on our young people.”

He says hearing a “constant bad news story” can impact some young people heavily.

He hopes that the Government’s allocation of funding to mental health also quickly finds its ways to DHBs to let them do their job.

“It is fair to say, with the increased workload related to Covid, that services are under pressure.”

Most of all, however, he says that if the situation changes with young people then parents need to go back to their GPs to tell them.

“Let someone know, don’t just assume.”

Nelson-based list MP Nick Smith says the wait time data reinforces his call last September to the Minister for a review of our local DHB mental health services.

“The Government must also accept responsibility for this appalling deterioration in mental health services for young people, as every DHB in the country has seen significant increases in waiting times.”

Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says that the Government is investing significantly in mental health services across New Zealand.

“Waitlist times for CAMHS have been raised with me by the community and I have raised this with the DHB earlier this year, who have assured me they are working hard to reduce the waiting list.”

Zoned out: ‘Gutted’ parents react to Nayland College zone launch Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson parent Jaynie Holmes feels let down by the Ministry of Education as she now faces the real prospect of having to spread her five children across three local secondary schools.

On April 2, Nayland College brought in its new zoning plan after more than a year of discussions with the ministry on how to stem its overflowing roll.

Although she already has a 14-year-old at the only co-ed secondary school in Nelson, Jaynie’s 11-year-old, nine-yearold, seven-year-old and twoyear-old won’t automatically be able to join their sibling - because they live out of the zone.

Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College are the only other high schools in the city.

“I am gutted for my children that now the chances of them all attending the same high school is very slim.”

The only way she will be able to get her other children into Nayland College is by applying for out-of-zone places.

The zone stretches from Saxton Rd in the south to Moncrieff Ave in the north.

People will be able to apply for out-of-zone places for next year from July, but principal Daniel Wilson says there are “no guarantees” and couldn’t estimate

how many places there could be.

The school’s board of trustees will determine the number of out-ofzone places available for 2022 by May 28, with a ballot drawn in September.

Zone plans were first confirmed by the ministry last July, with the roll sitting at its 1330 capacity.

Daniel says the decision to zone was “out of his control”.

“It’s been very clearly set out for a while, it’s business as usual for us.

Now we just have to get on with it.

“From a leadership perspective, it’s a useful tool for the school we can control the overcrowding.

But that’s not to say I don’t have sympathy for those parents

whose children can’t attend a coed school.”

The zone lines up with Broadgreen Intermediate's home zone boundary.

Daniel also confirmed to Nelson Weekly that the board was currently drafting a letter to the ministry about concerns that out-of-zone non-binary and transgender students would have to apply for a directed enrolment.

“They are wanting to know if anything can be done to change the legislation, it’s a factor they may not be aware of.”

Meanwhile, Jaynie, who is part of the Nelson Facebook group ‘Whanau for Educational Choice’, has been fighting the zone since it was announced.

“The feeling in the group at the moment seems to be shock, disbelief, and disappointment for the youth of Nelson and what this means for our upcoming teenagers who want to learn in a progressive co-ed environment.”

She says she worries about her 11-year-old son, who will be starting college in 2023.

“He is more suited to Nayland College - their curriculum fits him better. He has many friends who are girls as well as boys. We just have to hope that there are enough out-of-zone spaces.”

Backlash over fireworks display Jonty Dine

A Saturday night fireworks show has caused an explosive reaction from locals.

Stoke residents were startled by the six-minute display at Saxton Field celebrating a woman’s 50th birthday.

People have gone to Nelson City Council and social media to condemn the fireworks which they say terrified their pets and children.

The display was done by John Ivanoff of Combat Pyrotechnic Fireworks Displays who says the backlash is because the “whinging brigade are being unreasonable and just have a fundamental opposition to fireworks in general”.

“They were all quite freaked from the sound, it was a huge bang.”

Georgia took to the Combat Pyrotechnic Fireworks Displays Facebook page to voice her disappointment.

“No public warning for the Nelson area, terrified children and animals, people having to fork out on vet bills. What for huh? So y’all can watch some pretty lights go boom?,” Georgia wrote.

The company replied to Georgia, stating that “it seems you think that the universe revolves around you”.

She says she felt the response was “extremely unprofessional".

“I’m quite disappointed in the company’s ability to communicate with the

general public.”

John says that he has to fully comply with all legal requirements before setting off any fireworks.

“All of my displays are fully legal, and I need to get a compliance certificate from civil aviation, the fire service, Worksafe and get landowner permission.”

John says nowhere in the law is widespread notification required and the fireworks were within noise boundaries of local bylaws.

“It was a private event, and the client was renting the venue on the condition it be allowed to have fireworks.”

John says he went through the proper process and, as a courtesy, the council asked if he would notify the close neighbours.

“The immediate neighbours

were given a letterbox drop.”

He has been shocked by the backlash.

“It’s legal, I’m allowed to do it and I am deeply saddened by the fact these people put so much energy into complaining about six minutes of happiness.”

John says he has been subjected to plenty of abuse since Saturday evening.

“It’s been severe, the phone has been going constantly and it is unacceptable, people saying I hate old people, babies and dogs.”

John says people are effectively trying to destroy his business because “they were pissed off by a wee bit of noise”.

“If they can’t accept that it’s just someone having a good time, then it’s not the society, I want to live in.”

A Nelson charity is on a mission to rid Aotearoa of products stained with the atrocities of slave labour.

From rubber gloves produced in Asia, to cocoa from Africa and canned tomatoes from Europe, New Zealand consumers can unknowingly buy products created by slave labour, says Trade Aid in Nelson.

The Hardy St store has been at the forefront of a movement putting pressure on the Government to pass a

‘Modern Slavery Act’.

Lizl and Al step up to dance for a cause With Dancing for a Cause only a few weeks away, we have been catching up with the contestants who are ready to strut their stuff for Nelson Tasman Hospice.

Next up is Lizl Matthewson and Al Columbus What was your dance experience before D4AC? Lizl: I grew up with my mum always dancing with me and teaching me little dance steps. I also did a little bit of ballet but mostly modern jazz through my school years. I love to dance and used to put music on and dance in a Flashdance style in our garage. I dance with my kids, friends and when cleaning the house.

Why did you want to sign up to it?

Lizl: Giving back has always been important to me, even more so since my personal experience with breast cancer. Lizl: This experience has been incredible so far in getting to know and work with people all with the common purpose of doing the best that they can in raising funds for hospice and producing an amazing show.

What was your dance experience before D4AC? Al: Not a lot. The last real public dancing I did was in 1990 when I was in Nelson Operatic's production of Evita. No less challenging, but very different to what I am doing on May 1st.

Why did you want to sign up to it?

Al: I was involved in a lot of awareness and fundraising for Hospice during my years with Fifeshire FM and MediaWorks.

When, in 2019, Emma and Derryn asked me to enter, there was no hesitation. It was an easy yes to continue supporting such an important part of our community.

How have you found the experience so far?

Al: Bl*#dy HARD!!! But exhilarating, exciting and great for fitness!

Al: The pace of my dance. It is really fast.

Strong domestic enrolments for NMIT Erin Bradnock Strong domestic enrolments for Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology marks a promising start for the polytechnic’s academic year.

NMIT has had 4041 enrolments for domestic students as of the end of March, compared to 3299 in March 2020 - an increase of 22 percent.

New chief executive Wayne Jackson credits the Government's free fees programme for the spike of domestic enrolments.

“We can clearly see the impact of the fees-free programmes especially in targeted areas of trade from construction, engineering and carpentry, though most of our courses are seeing growth.”

The Government launched its Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF) in July 2020 which aims to redirect people who may have lost their job due to Covid-19 to a trade’s apprenticeship.

“Some courses that we thought wouldn’t do well for economic circumstances due to Covid are also seeing strong enrolments, such as hospitality and cheffing, which is gratifying,” he says.

Strong domestic enrolments come as a relief for NMIT which has dealt with its fair share of reshuffles in the wake of Covid.

NMIT joined the first phase of the new national polytechnic structure, New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, during lockdown last year.

NMIT’s former CEO, Liam Sloan, raised concerns over the structure in July and left the role in August for a position at Melbourne's Federation University.

Wayne Jackson was appointed as acting CEO and in

November his appointment was announced as permanent.

Wayne says the first phase of the new national polytechnic structure hasn’t affected NMIT too greatly.

“Probably we won’t see a lot of the impact from the structure until the end of the year and next year. We haven’t noticed it aside from the growth,” says Wayne.

Looking ahead, he says the polytechnic is focused on continuing to connect students to work in the region.

“We want to integrate with the business and culture community. Our plan is to be much more integrated and reflective of the long-term needs of the community. We’ve got our challenges, from salaries to employment, it’s our job to help to support our regional outcomes.”

Heather Kelling, Liz Ewins, Leona, Rae Rhodes, and Sarah Carpinter were part of an official hand over of cheque recently. Raising funds for a donation was a first-time event for the Nelson Veterans Tennis Club but is one they plan to continue. The Club which is based in Hope at the Hope Tennis Club took a democratic decision to use their annual tournament as a fund raiser and agreed the donation should go to St John’s Ambulance.

There is going to be a gala from some classes in the school like a ‘kombucha’ group (that is my group) a ‘stress ball’ group, a ‘hand sanitiser’ group, and also a ‘dream catcher’ group that is eco-friendly.

If you go to the school on the day and you go up to a table, there will be a map for the challenge.

Then, you will be given a map of Nelson with a landmark of where the numbers are for the

orienteering. Whoever gets back to the school first, with all the orienteering numbers completed, wins the challenge.

My principal, Pip Wells, says the Central Challenge is a fun family and friends' game to do around the Nelson city. ‘’It's a family-friendly game for all ages.’’

There will also be some toys for kids and there will be a ‘Rogaine’ with a map, directions where to go, and you will need to come with your friends or family.

There will also be games which will be ‘find the Lego guy’ and ‘hit down the coconuts’ and bouncy castles.

There will also be food that

people can buy like fish burgers, coffee, hot chocolate, and hotdogs.

There is also going to be a raffle stall where you go up to a stall and buy a raffle ticket and they will call out the winning number. Then you can go up to the stall where you got the ticket from and you will choose a jar full of stuff like art pens, stickers or a bouncy ball.

Afterwards people will be able to buy one of those jars for $2.

Housing response: Dear Editor, Rachel Boyack, Nelson MP made me angry in her long reply on housing in that it makes no mention of Kiwibuild. The promise from Labour to build 100,000 affordable home for first home buyers nationally and 1000 in Nelson and Tasman was repeated over and over again by Labour in election ads.

Not one home has been built in Nelson after 4 years and none are even planned. Does she think young people like me should just forget what she promised?

She should not be surprised that young people are cynical of politics when Labour breaks such an important promise.

I fear her latest promise that developers are building new homes in Nelson for under $600,000 is just as hollow. She should name the developers and tell us where they are, because I cannot find them anywhere in Nelson.

Her idea that prices are going to come down is not realistic. The problem is that first home buyers cannot access any Government support under the Firsthome Scheme unless they are priced under $600,000 and there are currently none under that.

Nelson Youth Theatre Company is bringing two well-known classics to the Theatre Royal these school holidays.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr and Little Women are running from April 26 to May 1 with performers ranging in age from six to eighteen.

Company director, Richard Carruthers, says it is the first time that these versions of the shows have been performed in Nelson.

“This Broadway version of Little Women is less than five years old, and the junior version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is about the same.”

A timeless story filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope, and everlasting love, Little Women is based on Louisa May Alcott’s life.

It follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March.

“It is one of the most beautiful shows we have ever staged,” says Richard.

“It is just a gorgeous story, and this version really captures the warmth, energy, and everything about the movies and book with beautiful costumes and gorgeous music.

“You’ll need to bring a box of tissues - it’s not all crying with heartache but crying from laughter.”

Directed by Melanie Carruthers, the show has a senior cast who range in age from 13 - 18.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was written by Ian Fleming, the writer of the James Bond books.

Based on the 1968 film, the story follows an eccentric inventor, Caractacus Potts, who sets about restoring an old race car from a scrap heap with the help of his children Jeremy and Jemima.

“This junior version has all the Fleming hallmarks - just toned down for a children’s audience,” says Richard.

“It is an exciting story that many

The show features the younger members of the company, aged from six to 14, and is directed by Leah Bethwaite, who has helped as as a costume designer on some of their shows.

Older residents and their friends and families enjoying a previous years Positive Ageing Expo with it’s many interesting outdoor stalls and demonstrations at the Headingly Centre, Richmond.

Promoting positive ageing The Positive Ageing Expo will be back in 2021, showcasing the recreational, health and social services available in Nelson – Tasman to make ageing a positive experience.

The expo has been running since 2008, attracting over 2000 people each year. The next one is coming up on Friday, 16 April 2021 from 10am to 3pm at the Headingly Centre in Richmond.

Keynote speakers include Merryn Gott who will discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on older New Zealanders and how the media portrayed older people during lockdown. This will be followed by Bevan Grant and Mal Drummond who will host an interactive discussion around the growing concerns of Elder Abuse.

Throughout the day, there will also be the opportunity to try your hand at new activities such as Line Dancing, Dru Yoga and Fit for Fun. The expo is hosted by the Tasman District Council. “It’s my first year of involvement with organising the event,” says Gary. “We have a good cross section of people across a steering group because some of the agencies who support the expo already see the value of holding it.

The event is a great opportunity to get everyone in one place so people can make connections.”

Unfortunately, torrential rain greeted playing across the region on Saturday.

Though it wasn’t champagne rugby on display at Trafalgar Park, Marist played to its strengths to make a winning start in its quest to win the Tasman Trophy for a third time.

Marist’s powerful forward pack dominated Waitohi to grind out a comfortable 41-10 win over the Marlborough side.

Skipper Jacob Norris says conditions saw a slight shift in the game plan.

A fair contingent of competitors are making their way north to Nelson from Cromwell as well including ex-Warrior and Kiwi Rugby League player Whetu Taewa. Whetu was in the original Auckland Warriors team back in the day but over the last few seasons has been racing in speedway including racing Sprintcars the last couple of years and is really getting to grips the 900 horsepower beast.

Other promotions over the two nights are the third and final round of the Three Quarter Midget club championship and the first ever club championship for our newest class, the Quarter Midgets for kids aged from 8 years old to 15 years of age. To round out the first night of racing the Production Saloons will contest their Easter Championship. Second night the Quarter Midgets once again feature and will contest their Easter Championship while the other kids class, the Youth Ministocks will also contest their Easter Championship.

Mike’s big break comes in the USA Jonty Dine After being offered a refereeing role in Atlanta, the first thing Mike Lash did was Google the local rivers.

Mike was delighted to discover the Chattahoochee River was teeming with bass and trout which cemented his decision to make the move.

Packing his three most important items first, his rod, passport and some undies, Mike embarked on the next chapter of his rugby journey.

That opportunity arose after one of the best to ever blow a whistle got in touch with Mike. He asked him to officiate in one of the fastest growing tournaments in the world, Major League Rugby.

Mike had just updated his Linkedin profile to include his work around mental health.

Intrigued, MLR head official Jonathan Kaplan called Mike to talk, which led to the offer of a three-year refereeing contract in the United States.

“A lot of people at home know how hard I tried to be a professional referee in New Zealand, but it just didn’t happen,

though it wasn’t through lack of trying.”

Mike says it is a cutthroat ladder and one he seemed destined not to climb.

However, just as he least expected it, Mike was given a chance to fulfil that dream.

Having arrived in Georgia on March 11, Mike quickly got to work making his pro debut during Atlanta vs Toronto at Life University.

“I have always wanted to come to the States. I am a big fan of the sports here, so, to be a part of it, I have to pinch myself.”

The match marked Mike’s first time in the middle after a long break.

“I was nervous, but it was good nerves.

It was such a cool day, and I took some time to look around and soak it all in, not many get to do what we get to do.”

Mike will cover almost every corner of the country, from Houston to Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle.

“I am here to do a job, not to make up numbers or have a six-month spring break. I’ll get the sightseeing in when I can but there is still mahi to do.”

The competition, which was founded in 2017, boasts some big international names including Wallaby legends Adam Ashley Cooper and Matt Giteau, sevens star Cecil Afrika and two test All Black Jamie Mackintosh.

“I can only see it growing.”

The game is promoted in a unique way across the Atlantic, with singles nights and $2 beers helping drive in the fans.

“There is a lot of passion, which is really cool. It is not their chosen sport, but many have adopted it.”

Mike says he is adjusting to American culture, even swapping out his beloved Speights for Budweiser.

“In a month I have only driven on the wrong side once, tipping is weird, and I have been teaching a few ‘churs’ and ‘sweet as’.”

The future of female basketball in Nelson is looking bright with the Sparks set to return to the national scene.

Nelson is at constant risk of losing its greatest talents to the bigger cities.

One such talent is Hannah Crabtree.

Hannah made the move to St Andrews College from Nayland College for her final year of high school.

The 19-year-old guard was assessing her future in Christchurch before it was announced the Sparks were returning.

“I was looking to move but with the Sparks coming back there was a reason to stay.”

Hannah says she first played for the Sparks in 2018 and still relishes the experience.

“The knowledge I got from

playing with those older players was amazing and it is really exciting to have a team back at that top level. It’s great for Nelson basketball.”

Hannah says there is a wealth of promising young basketballers in the region.

“We have enough talent to compete and there are a lot of young players who will be ones for the future.”

She says the Sparks will no doubt be an incentive for that talent to remain in Nelson.

“To have that pathway and play the best women in the country without having to move away will be huge.”

Hannah enjoyed a successful stint down south on scholarship, going undefeated in the Canterbury schools league as well as winning the club premier competition.

However, she has now opted to return home where she has been given a job at Nelson Basketball.

General manager of the Nelson Basketball Association, Frances Tilly, says she is thrilled that a pathway to professional basketball is opening up for local women and girls.

“To have the Nelson Sparks back and playing live on TV is going to be a great boost for our young female basketball players in the region. We hope it’ll give them something to strive for in the game, and the goal is to see local players out there in the Sparks colours once again, inspiring our youth.”

The Nelson Sparks have been granted a two-year licence to participate in the NBL’s 3x3 Schick Cup, effective for the 2021 and 2022 editions of the competition.

The Sparks haven’t played a part in top tier NBL competition since 2016, just four years after hoisting aloft the championship trophy of the then-named WBC in 2012.
