Nelson shoppers are being cautioned for disappointment as people flood retailers ahead of Christmas only to find huge

delays in getting stock in due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

With just over two weeks to go until Christmas day, shops are dealing with logistics issues in getting shipments from overseas, particularly China.

That means that stock may run

dry the closer it gets to the big day.

“We are saying that you can’t be picky,” owner of Beggs Musicworks, Tim Begg, says.

“And if you want to be picky, you’ll have to be patient.”

But that might see you waiting

months for your order.

Tim says some people understand the situation that every retail outlet is in.

“But some obviously don’t read the media. I’ve been doing this for 35 years and it’s never been this bad. It’s a little frustrating but

we can’t control it.”

He says, whether you are wanting a TV, a dishwasher or a tennis racket, everyone is in the same boat. Despite that, however, he says sales are strong.

“Soon you will be walking into an empty shop. If you want something for Christmas, I wouldn’t be hanging around.”

It’s the same situation for local bike shops who are seeing orders being placed for e-bikes that won’t be delivered until August next year.

“If someone can find me some more bikes, I would definitely take them,” says Evo Cycles assistant manager Matthew Knight.

He says e-bike sales have skyrocketed as people discover the efficiency of using them to commute to work.

Matthew says things like scooters and kids’ bikes have been very popular, though they might not have as many colours as they would like.

Tahae Lowe, says they knew there was going to be an issue this time of year so they ordered large amounts of stock early.

“We made an effort to buy extra and hold onto it, just to make sure we had it.”

But still there are some issues

with specific toys, like Lego.

“The biggest issue isn’t getting the stock, it’s just that it’s stuck on ships trying to get into Auckland.

“The main one we have found is Lego shortages. They have been up front about it but there is only

limited ability to get certain stock in.”

Prue Thomas of Audiophile says it’s an issue facing all retailers.

“We have stocked up but if we don’t get stuff in the new year then we will run out. Hopefully, by then they will have it sorted.”

Local motorhome sellers have been swept off their feet to meet rising summer demands post Covid-19.

Vern Walker from Nelson Caravans has been working seven days a week to get new motorhome owners ready for summer.

“At the moment we are chock-ablock. Those wanting caravans for Christmas are probably too late,” says Vern.

Vern says he’s seen the interest grow for motorhomes over the years but, because of Covid, there's been a sharp rise in demand and not enough supply.

“We rely on stock from the United Kingdom, so when they went into lockdown for six months, we went into lockdown. They can’t build enough caravans to meet the worldwide demand.”

“We’ve got a lot of stock sitting dormant, unfortunately.”

Jared Rameka-iti from SOTA RV says they’re practically booked out until June of next year.

“Even if we had the stock, they’d all be gone,” says Jared.

Jared and Mike Carmody from SOTA RV have been operational from June 2019.

Due to Covid, Jared has been full-time selling caravans and was able to leave his other work

as an auto electrician.

“Since June of last year, we’ve had three years' worth of sales in just that short of a time,” says Jared.

He says that the type of people buying caravans has changed this year.

“We’re seeing more families and younger people interested in caravans.”

Steve Smith is one of these locals who has recently invested in a caravan and is now looking forward to spending most of his summer days travelling the country in his new motorhome.

“It was something we’ve been looking into for a while, we were just on a mission to find the right one.”

Vern’s advice for anyone hunting for a caravan is to act quick.

“It really doesn’t matter what brand you’re after; everybody is in the same boat and everyone here is working hard.”

‘Overwhelming’ wait for a home Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson mum of two Karina Murray sleeps on a fold-out couch in her mum’s lounge every night.

Right next to her, her mum sleeps in a chair, while her two children and Karina’s younger sister occupy the bedrooms of the small Stoke unit.

“I’ve been living here for nearly two years,” says the 24-year-old mum to 17-month-old Alaya and three-month-old Lynette.

It’s not a situation Karina chooses to be in.

She has been on the public housing waitlist for those two years, but applications to that list in the West Coast Tasman region have grown by more than 200 since the beginning of the year.

“I call Work and Income just about every day just to find out how much longer it’s going to take. They know my situation - I keep explaining it to them.”

When Lynette was born, she was told they would be a higher priority on the waitlist.

“But still, nothing. I know there’s a housing crisis here, but the wait time is just beyond ridiculous.”

She says she feels as if she is being “pushed aside”.

“I did enquire about going into emergency accommodation, but they basically told me they didn’t want to put me in there.”

She says their living situation is “overwhelming” for everybody involved.

“My mum has days where she just gets really frustrated with it.

She has told me that this house doesn’t feel like her own anymore.

She’s given up her bedroom for us.

“It’s really crowded and cramped - there’s just clutter everywhere.

We’re always on top of each other.

I didn’t think we would be here for this long.”

She and her partner, who sometimes lives with them too, moved here from Auckland for a “fresh start” when she was pregnant with Alaya.

“Up there we couldn’t afford food once our rent was paid. It was

really bad.”

Karina has also been looking at private rentals, but the majority are “way out” of her budget.

“I’ve applied for lots, but I don’t ever hear anything back. When I go to house viewings it’s sad to see how many families are in actual need of a house.”

Karina says her dog is also part of the family as he helps her with anxiety and panic attacks.

“He can sense them, and he’ll calm me down quite quickly. I can’t give him up, he has to be there.”

The demand for public housing doesn’t look to be easing, with 714 applicants currently on the housing register in the West Coast Tasman region, compared

with 633 in the June quarter.

There are now 1,469 public houses managed by Kāinga Ora and community housing providers in the region - an increase by 11 since last quarter.

Karina and her family are being supported by Glenys Tideman, who is a whanau worker for Family Start.

“The situation in Nelson is just dire, there is just so much of this happening.”

Glenys says she knows of a family of four living in a one-bedroom house, and situations like theirs and Karina’s can put huge pressure on family relationships.

“People are just giving up hope - they don’t think they will ever find anything.”

An elderly woman who was struck by a vehicle in the city centre last week has died.

Police confirmed that the woman died after being taken to hospital following the crash at the intersection of Trafalgar and Bridge Streets on Thursday.

Constable Shaun Berkett says they are seeking witnesses to the collision, which happened at the intersection just after 12.30pm.

"We encourage anyone with information to contact us via 105 and quote file number 201204/1633."

He says enquiries into the collision are ongoing.

Glenn Thompson picked a star to hang on the Tree of Remembrance last week.

It was to remember his wife Haley who died last October after a long battle with breast cancer.

“I picked the star because she was a star.”

Glenn says, while the past year has been tough, he had nothing but praise for Nelson Tasman Hospice team who welcomed Haley into their service last July.

“They were awesome. We were stressed, we didn’t know what was going on. We felt like family straight away.”

The family were there for four months. It all happened while they were moving house and trying to figure out what to do with their three children.

“To watch your partner fade away is hard but it puts you in stead to deal with it,” Glenn says.

The trees are a way to remember a loved one by leaving a message on a tree. The service is available from outside Stoke New World, inside Richmond Mall and outside Nelson Hospice Shop until December 11.

Glenn says this time of year is hard for the family.

“We had plans. We were going to do things. Haley and I were a true love story, that’s for sure. She was awesome. She was so selfless.”

Now he honours her memory by letting as many people as he can know about the importance of getting check-ups. He even has changed the t-shirts of his panel beating business to feature pink breast cancer ribbons.

“Helping people helps me heal.”

Glenn now volunteers for the hospice – selling raffles and donating when he can.

Sophie Weenink-Smith was disappointed to see rubbish strewn across Tahuna Beach on Saturday morning, but heartened by the hundreds of volunteers prepared to get their hands dirty to clean it up. The teenager organised her second beach clean-up with almost 300 people turning out to do their part. Soiled mattresses, cigarette butts and glass bottles were included amongst the litter, however, the main culprits were takeaway wrappers with McDonald’s and KFC featuring prominently in the piles. Volunteers were treated to a barbecue following the clean-up after Sophie stored 200 vegan sausages in her fridge during the week. “It is really uplifting to see people wh care about the environment,” says Sophie.

Young mums turn lives around Sara Hollyman Reporter

A young mother says she would be “doomed” without the school which has been helping her further her studies while raising two young children.

Nelson Young Parent School have honoured their students’ hard work and determination to make the most of their studies despite a year that has been impacted by Covid-19.

The school presented four awards to its top achievers, who are all raising young children as well as advancing their academic studies.

Angelique Thorn received the Nelson Soroptimist Personal Development Award which head teacher Philippa Trewavas says acknowledges the student’s commitment to personal growth.

Angelique says, when she started at the school in 2017, she was 15, pregnant and lacked any motivation to go to school.

“I didn’t ever go to school; I just didn’t want to get up.”

“My goal is to become a youth worker; I really want to work with young people and I want to slowly gain other degrees in social work and counselling.”

Philippa described Angelique as a stubborn teenager turned mature young woman.

“After many battles I can now proudly stand here with you, Angelique, and say we did it ... look at you now, a mother of two who knows what she wants to do with her life. A mum who not only has goals and aspirations for herself but also for her family of four, and you have a clear path of how to achieve them.”

Angelique says the school has been an amazing support.

“I really don’t know what I’d

do without the school. I’d be doomed, pretty much.”

Levana Grout was awarded ‘Top Achiever’ and was described as a student with a focused plan who has not wavered from it.

Mee Meh was presented with the ASPIRE award and Chauntalia Fleming-Ngatuere the Nelson Soroptimist Education Trust Award.

Philippa says all students have an individual education programme to allow them to reach their career goals.

“It is a special place to teach, it’s emotional, it’s happy, it’s sad; you’re so invested in every single part of the students' lives, not just the teaching part. But I’m as proud of them today as what I was last year and the year before.”

Fire service hopefuls put through their paces Erin Bradnock

The local fire service had its largest turnout yet at Sunday’s recruitment open day.

“It’s great to see - this is the fourth open day, and this is the best turn out we’ve had,” says senior station officer Rob Appleton.

The open day is part of the recruitment process to fill two firefighter positions available at Nelson Fire Station.

About 30 eager attendees met at the station on Gloucester St to understand the work, recruitment process and have a crack at the ‘physical pre-entry assessment’.

The test includes hose drags, ladder extensions, weighted stair

climbs and a 90kg dummy drag for 30 metres. Participants have to complete the circuit in 8.15 minutes to qualify.

Ethan Waters was one of the would-be firefighters at the open day.

“They just seem like a great bunch of people here,” says Ethan.

Ethan works in forestry and says it’s the vital community work of the fire and emergency service that led him to the open day.

Rob stresses they’re “not looking for robots” at the local brigade and that empathy is a must in recruits - alongside mental strength, motivation and fitness, Above all else, Rob says they are also looking for team players.

Nelson’s popular and wacky dog names revealed Kate Russell Reporter

Move over Rover, Fido and Spot - Poppy, Bella and Charlie are the new top dogs in Nelson.

The city’s most popular dog names for 2020 have been revealed by Nelson City Council, with Poppy taking out the top spot.

There are 66 Poppys in the city, with the next most popular names being Bella, Charlie, Max and Ruby. Rounding out the top ten are Jess, Buddy, Lucy, Millie and Coco.

Raewyn Robertson, who owns a one-year-old Maltese cross called Poppy, says it was the name her previous owners chose for her.

“We decided to keep it. We think she’s a real little Poppy.”

Pops or Pop Pop are her

nicknames.

“But we also call her Popsicle because she’s a bit of a licker.”

Soon, Raewyn will also have a dog with the second most popular name in Nelson - Bella.

“We’re getting her next week, she’s an eight-week-old Yorkshire terrier.”

Overall, there were 5779 dogs registered in Nelson this year with many dogs with one-of-a kind names, such as Loki Agent of Chaos, White Tummy, Teddy Monster, Roly Poly and Luna Lovegood.

There are also pups called Mr Snoodles, Sup, Red Dog, Dropbearronperlman, Emilia Noseheart, Miss Bling, Moustache and Fritz Withers III. There are plenty of food inspired names too, including Tofu, Peanut, Honey, Sausage, Pavlova,

Pesto, Muffin and Jellybean.

Some chose a beverage inspired name, with Pepsi, Coffee, Speights, Juice and Heineken all making the list.

The always-popular flower names are there too, including Daisy, Poppy, Lily, Violet and Marigold.

Council’s group manager environmental management, Clare Barton, says they estimate that 95 per cent of all dogs in Nelson are registered.

“This demonstrates that Nelsonians are good dog owners who take responsibility for their pets. For those few owners who haven’t registered yet, we urge them to do so as fines can be issued for unregistered dogs.”

This year, council opened the Marsden Valley Dog Park, a dedicated space for dogs to play and run, off their leads.

“We are delighted at the positive feedback received so far about the park, both from dog owners and non-dog owners who are seeing

benefits from safer walking areas due to dogs being more likely to be on their leads in their neighbourhoods.”

An Nguyen hopes to one day turn his love for numbers into millions of dollars.

The 18-year-old dreams of playing the stock market on Wall St. An was recently named dux of Nelson College for 2020.

Hearing his name read out, An thought to himself, ‘surely this isn’t right?’

“It was so unexpected, but I was so proud.”

An says he enjoyed a fierce academic battle with a classmate throughout his college years.

However, An says he was always on the losing end until now.

“I tried a little harder and he didn’t focus as much this year.”

An studied accounting, economics, calculus, statistics and

physics, achieving an excellence endorsement.

An’s family moved to Nelson from Vietnam in 2009 to provide better education opportunities.

His passion for numbers began at an early age.

“Numbers are always clear cut.

They don’t change and there is one answer, subjects like English are judged holistically.”

Among his college highlights are a trip to America with the future problem solvers and the 2020 ball where his bright pink suit proved popular.

“I said I would wear one if I went, not thinking I would go, but then I decided I wanted to experience a ball and I had to stick to my word.”

An will attend Canterbury University in 2021 where he will study financial engineering.

“It is going to be challenging but a lot of fun.”

“It helps, but it is not enough to control the seizures. Some days the emotions become too much but you have to get stronger to cope with them.”

After relocating from South Africa 13 years ago, the Buckland family moved from Canterbury earlier this year to Nelson to have more care available for Asher.

The move meant they would double their mortgage while her father Brendon took a lower salary.

“Although it's been a huge financial strain moving to Nelson from tiny little Hawarden, we know it's been the absolutely best thing for our family,” Belinda says.

As a family of eight, Asher’s family have made a number of sacrifices in order to fund her special needs.

“We don't have holidays, or meals out. The biggest treat for the children is getting hot chips occasionally.”

Belinda says she is grateful the siblings are all so caring towards Asher and understanding of the challenges she has.

“They are used to mostly having hand me down clothes and the cheapest shoes. Sometimes I feel sorry for them, but you just focus

Belinda says seeing seven-yearold Asher suffering seizures is a devastating and powerless feeling.

“The fear and panic on her face is heart-breaking. She would cling to me and just keep saying ‘feel bad,’ most of the time there is nothing you can do for her but be there, give her hugs and keep reassuring her.”

Asher suffers from the extremely rare Dravet Syndrome, a form of epilepsy that lasts a lifetime.

Fortunately, there is a medicine that exists to help control Asher’s seizures.

Unfortunately, obtaining it is causing significant financial strain for the family.

Asher takes Charlotte's Web CBD oil of which there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest it might help sufferers of epilepsy.

The Bucklands say it helps Asher but are forced to shell out thousands of dollars to ease her suffering.

“Her dose is only limited by finances, there is so much room to increase, but the cost is the only barrier.”

Asher endured her first seizure at just four-months-old. Just before her first birthday, she had 12 seizures in less than 24 hours.

This is when she started antiepileptic drugs.

However, it wasn’t until discovering CBD oil that Asher’s seizures began to become less frequent.

Factoring in her age and weight, doctors recommend Asher take 500mg of CBD oil a day to control her seizures.

However, due to the cost barrier, she is only able to have 50-100mg.

A 50mg bottle of CBD oil through the Bucklands' suppliers costs $120.

Belinda hopes to get the right dose for her so they can get as much seizure control as possible.

“We have no idea how much she could improve with her learning and speech, if her neurological activity was able to be calmed more. We want to see what its potential it, maybe we can get her seizure free.”

To help fund the cost of Asher’s medication, Belinda has created a Givealittle page.

Thanks to its donations so far, Asher has been able to increase her CBD intake from 50 to 100/ mg a day.

“It’s a constant juggle, you want the best for her, but you have to weigh up the side effects,” Belinda says.

When on CBD oil, Asher has been having just one or two seizures a month compared to the average of 11 a month in 2017.

However, the oil is no longer available in New Zealand.

“It’s not cannabis, it’s not hallucinogenic, it important for people to realise that.”

Without CBD, Asher’s seizures become more frequent, and her behaviour more violent.

“In four weeks off the oil, she had five seizures and her behaviour had deteriorated. She was hitting her teachers and the other children at school and it was just getting worse every week.”

Jo Edwards’ retirement: When speaking of retirement people told Jo Edwards “you know when you know” and now she has reached that decision it brings to an end an amazing and illustrious career in the sport of lawn bowls.

During my ten years as CEO of Sport Tasman, Jo won both the ‘Sports Woman of the Year’ and the overall ‘Sports Person of the Year’ awards on a number of occasions and it was a pleasure to witness her great achievements during that time.

Jo at all times was a lovely, relaxed person to deal with and that disposition she shared with her best mate Val Smith, another great champion bowler in her own right. I can recall one instance when on holiday in Australia when someone quite unknown to me enquired as to where I came from.

When I told the enquirer it was Nelson, his response was “isn’t that where Jo Edwards comes from?” Yes, Jo was well-known across the ditch as well. So as the curtain comes down after 23 years “on the greens” it will be sad for Jo. However, she will always be remembered as that champion bowler from Nelson and we all are very proud of that. Good luck to Jo and her husband Dave for a happy and contented retirement back home here in paradise.

Millions go to Chess champion sets sights on Grandmaster title restoring Maitai Staff Reporter

Erin Bradnock Chess prodigy Alexandre de Maupeou d’Ableiges dreams of making a career out of the game when he leaves school.

The 15-year-old was ranked the top individual player in last week's virtual Interschool Chess Tournament which pitted 29 teams across Australia and New Zealand against each other. Then, in October, Alexandre was also named the top individual player and junior master in the New Zealand Chess Power Teams Nationals.

“With chess you’re constantly improving. It’s something I really enjoy doing,” he says.

The Nelson College student has been playing chess for just over three years, having learnt the game from his parents.

“I just practice a couple hours a week and there's always someone willing to play at lunchtime,” he says.

On the rare occasion he does lose, Alexandre says that’s where he learns the most.

“I just like the strategy of it.”

Despite the uncertainties of Covid-19, Alexandre has been surprised by the amount of gameplay he’s been able to have.

For now, Alexandre has his sights set on a tournament in Palmerston North this January. He is preparing for the open

round where he can hopefully gain a title.

“My goal is to be a Grandmaster before Year 13 and hopefully then I can play chess as a job,” he says.

A $3.7 million project aimed at restoring the health of the Maitai Valley was launched this month.

Over five years, Project Mahitahi will provide local employment opportunities as part of the Covid-19 recovery, plant 125,000 trees, restore 1.3 hectares of wetlands and carry out pest plant control in the Maitai/Mahitahi and Brook Waimarama catchment.

The project brings together council, iwi, central government and the Department of Conservation restoring the Mauri, or life force, of the valley.

Ngāti Koata Trust general manager and Project Mahitahi co-chair, Justin Carter, says that the Mahitahi catchment is of central importance to mana whenua iwi identity.

“Historically, the natural resources were plentiful with tūpuna travelling from around the rohe to the Mahitahi for mahinga kai, rongoa, hunting, fishing, weaving and collecting building materials.

“It is about us being good ancestors and fulfilling our collective kaitiaki role for the generations to come. This project supports us to do that."

The ecological restoration plan for the project aims to enhance water quality, improve habitats and preserve indigenous plants and taonga species.

Project Mahitahi builds on work that landowners in the catchment and the wider community have been doing for many years, with funding of $1.7 million from the Ministry for the Environment and $2 million from the Department of Conservation Kaimahi for Nature fund.

The project is the first in the country to be granted this funding through a regional alliance involving councils and iwi.

Nutcracker brings innovation and communities together Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson’s visual arts and theatre communities are banding together to bring a Christmas classic to the Theatre Royal - with a modern twist.

The Nutcracker runs from December 17 - 19 and is a community extravaganza with more than 100 cast members participating from all over the region.

To keep the set as minimalist as possible - while keeping the magic of the story - local artist Lee Woodman has created a ‘set in a box’ which will be projected onto the back of the stage using a camera.

Complete with a working lift, pulleys and multiple backdrops, the miniature set is a Nelson first.

“There is stuff that is done with

projections, but not an entire set,” says Lee, who has always been “intrigued” with miniatures.

“We were thinking about how we could make a big book on stage and I thought ‘I don’t want to build a whole lot of stuff that we have to store’.

“Because The Nutcracker is all about toys and Christmas it works so well - here we have a toy with handles, pulleys and bits and bobs. It fits in with the whole magic theme.”

Lee says the cross-over with the arts and theatre communities has lifted everybody involved.

Faye and Karl Wulff at Community Art Works have also created masks and costumes, while Just Costumes are also lending a hand.

Director Lesley Bandy says the show is a real “community celebration” and she hopes to make it an annual event.

proponents helping with the fight against the Rat King - they are all giving of their time, culture, and expertise.

“It’s been a big old thing to wrangle, but it’s been an amazing way of meeting people.”

Professional and student dancers will be showing off their skills with Leonora Voigtlander coming home to Nelson from the Royal New Zealand Ballet to perform.

The show is being produced by Kim Bailey with Laura Jones as assistant choreographer.

Gillian Francis and Peta Spooner dance studios are also donating rehearsal space.

In addition to the main event, a free public performance of snippets of the ballet will be presented on December 13 at 8.30pm outside the Theatre Royal. It will feature artwork by local students projected as a backdrop onto the neighbouring Summit building.

The Tasman Mako continue to make history, becoming just the second province to defend a national title after going back to back in 2020.

It is a stunning rags to riches story for the Mako, after being on the brink of extinction just a few years ago.

It was a far tougher road to glory this season, after an unbeaten 2019, Tasman dropped three regular season games in 2020.

The Mako would lose stars Will Jordan, Sevu Reece, Shannon Frizzell and Tyrel Lomax to All Blacks duty while Ethan Blackadder and Pari Pari Parkinson sat out the campaign through injury.

Despite the adversity, the Mako defied the odds and has cemented its status as provincial rugby powerhouses.

At the heart of the side was its most influential player, skipper David Havili.

Asked what makes this side so special, Havili is quick to point out its success goes far beyond the players.

“It’s the whole region not just the team, the support we get around here, it’s the management, the peo-

ple we have backing us, and everyone buys into what we want to achieve. The year we have had has been unbelievable and I’m just so grateful to be able to share this moment with my close mates.”

Well, in provincial rugby terms it doesn’t come much tougher than taking on Auckland at Fortress Eden Park.

The home side, national provincial champion on 17 occasions, were top qualifiers for the final and boasted a 31-10 victory over the Mako the last time the sides met.

Despite the underdog tag, Havili says they were certainly not going to lie down for Auckland.

“They are a great side, you can’t fault them, they have been the pinnacle of the Mitre 10 Cup this year and

we had to go up there and take it from them.”

In front of a home crowd, who were handed free admission, the Mitre 10 Cup premiership decider was meant to be a step to far for the gritty southerners, champions in 2019 with a vastly-different squad.

But someone forgot to tell Havili’s 2020 crew, who came away with a nail-biting 13-12 victory.

Going back to back with a settled squad is one thing, having to almost totally re-shape your forward pack, then deal with a string of injuries to key players, including another early in the final, is quite another.

The 2020 Mako squad epitomise the word ‘resilience’.

As a delighted Tasman Rugby Union chairman Wayne Young pointed out, “we weren’t meant to do that – it wasn’t in the script”.

“I think a lot of impartial rugby people were of the opinion that the home ground advantage would do it for Auckland, even if it was tight.”

Young admitted to being “extremely stressed out” during the final stages of the match, especially when he was called out by one of the Eden Park staff to leave his seat during the hectic final minutes to take the lift down to ground level in preparation for the trophy presentations.

“We got in the lift with four minutes to go and I said that we would know who has won by the cheering of the crowd, a big roar will mean Auckland have got it.

He says when he got on the field following the win it was a totally

#FinzUp different feeling to last year.

“Last year was so good but I would almost personally put this ahead of it, to me this one is more special.”

Wayne says the coaching staff and management have created that old-fashioned togetherness and passion that got them over the line.

“We have done it this season without rock stars, just grit and determination.”

Co-head coach Andrew Goodman put their win down to “a lot of hard work and a lot of belief ”.

“We have flown under the radar a bit this season. Not many people were expecting that result but we had belief … we just chipped away in the background and knew we had a performance in us that could win us back-to-back titles.

Andrew says the ferocity in which Tasman defended in the final moments epitomised the Mako culture.

“That defensive block towards the end when Auckland were hard on attack just sums up what the jersey means to the boys, a lot of heart went into that.”

He credits the entire extended squad and management team for its success.

“I’m just really stoked for everyone who has been involved this season. The whole time, and our leadership group has been outstanding.”

While only nine players remained from the team that contested last year’s final, Goodman says it was the calibre of those players that proved so vital.

They have driven the standards, I am just so proud of not only them, but the whole squad."

He says it had been a lot of hard work and we have learned some hard lessons on the way.

“The main thing is that the boys have kept believing - as a coaching group, as a management group and as a playing group.”

The seeds of their 13-12 victory over Auckland were sown during a testing series of round robin matches.

Heavy losses to Auckland, North Harbour and Canterbury sent them back

to the drawing board. Tasman’s ability to learn from their poor performances, remedy the problems and improve at the business end of the season was integral to their effort at Eden Park.

“We have learned from those occasions when we didn’t perform to our best, (in the final), we put in a performance that I thought was worthy of a win.”

Andrew also took time to praise his fellow coaches.

“Shane Christie has been a magician with our defence over the last few years, he’s done an amazing job. And the work Clarke Dermody, in his last year with us, has done with our young forward pack has had a lot to do with the result today.”

Tasman’s victory with a vastly different squad this year shows there is depth in

the region, while Goodman says that the players who have come from elsewhere to join the union have relished the experience.

“You talk to a guy like Mark Telea, now he’s a Mako man for life, he understands what it is to be a Mako man. He sees what we do every day. The players who have come to the Mako, whether it be for a year or more, they just love the place, Nelson and Blenheim, they love the team and how we operate and the footy we play.”

The entrepreneurial creativity of Broadgreen Intermediate students was celebrated on Friday at the annual Enterprise Day Market.

Students have been working throughout the term to develop either a product or service to market, produce and ultimately sell at Market Day. Prizes were then awarded to businesses for the largest turnover, most sustainable product, most sustainable service and most innovative product.

Deputy principal Jeanne Munro says the key concepts are for students to learn about all aspects of business - from GST and import tax to bartering, marketing and production.

“All products and services have to have a sustainable element. They test their product out on prototype day and have to look at whether the price is right, who is buying the product, that kind of thing.”

She says it was a real “buzz” wandering around market day.

“It’s so exciting to choose what you want to buy; the kids blow you away by what they finally produce, there’s certainly lots of original ideas.”

Keshia Linyard took out the most sustainable product with her ‘Driftwood Art’ - pieces of driftwood with hand-painted seascapes.

Maya Ricciardi, Zoe Snowsill and Abby Mills created 30 ‘Ecospheres’ and terrariums from plants, rocks, and bugs sourced from the school grounds and the neighbouring creek.

It took them roughly 20 minutes to sell out of the decorative eco systems.

“We decided to make these because it was quite different and also eco-friendly. We used recycled jars and all the other supplies are from the school grounds and the creek,” says Zoe. Maya says both the terrariums and ecospheres are completely self-sufficient, requiring no watering.

Life lessons passed down through volleyball Jonty Dine While growing up, Zaw Tin was often left behind on trips to volleyball tournaments.

Unable to afford the extra cost of transport, Zaw missed out on a number of opportunities in the game he loves.

Since then he has vowed to eliminate financial barriers in volleyball and,along with his partner Lily James, has helped establish a team of refugee players in Nelson.

“I wanted to share my knowledge and love of volleyball.”

Zaw soon had ten Nelson Intermediate players, majority of Chin descent, eager to play the season.

“I didn’t select them, it was just by chance. I would’ve coached anyone, but I love them, I see them as my little brothers.”

Zaw understands the difficult backgrounds many of his players have come from.

He and his family moved to New Zealand in 2007 from a Thairefugee camp.

“My dad was Burmese, and we went under refuge because of the war. He wanted a better life for his family.”

He appreciates that not every child has the resources to play sport.

“I look back and remember some games I couldn’t go because I

couldn’t get a ride, if you didn’t have money you couldn’t go to games.”

He mitigates any cost burden by picking up each player every Wednesday in his aunty’s van.

Zaw instills lessons for his players both on and off the volleyball court.

“There is a lot of life stuff.”

Lily says the boys had previously been involved in a few incidents outside of school.

“They have stopped doing things they shouldn’t be doing, which is a huge achievement for us.”

Zaw says he has also seen a significant transition in attitude.

“They were a cocky bunch, they didn’t lose much but once they lost their mindset changed, they used to boast all the time and now they are very humble.”

The team’s motto is ‘iron sharpens iron’.

“They lift each other up and it makes me so proud they have amazing hearts.”

With the boys off to college next year, Zaw and Lily say they don’t know what the next step on their journey will be, but they hope to take the boys along with them.

Lily and Zaw have worked tirelessly obtaining sponsorship to ensure their boys keep playing for free.

In a replay of the 2019 TPL final, the result was reversed as Stoke/ Nayland beat Athletic College Old Boys by eight wickets in a rainaffected match at Marsden Rec on Saturday.

Batting first, ACOB posted 228 in 49 overs with opener Shane White striking 50 and Josh Simpson top scoring with 84.

Veteran Ryan Edwards and Dylan Eginton each chipped in with three wickets as the defending champions were dismissed in the 49th over.

Whalers recognised at prize giving

The Nelson Whalers Inline Hockey club held their annual prize giving and end of year barbeque at the Tahunanui rink recently.

In the 10 and Under grade the MVP went to Nero Bjerring and Alex Burn was awarded the Most Improved player. Max Plotnitski was named as the 12 and Under MVP with Walter Blair earning the Most Improved player award.

All four players were involved in the three locally held tournaments with Bjerring, Blair and Plotnitski forming a strong force against the Northern teams in the Levin tournament.

In the women’s grade, Deb Blair won Most Improved and Merle Salmond for Most Committed. The senior grade had three winners with Andrew Friesen taking out the MVP, Most Improved went to Robin Le Couteur and Most Committed player for this grade was Jamie Salmond. In the Seniors, Lin Zhang won a prize for her ‘dedication to improving her shot’ and Chris Rae for his donations towards training equipment.

The younger players were not forgotten with Trent Ingersen getting a gift for ‘having the biggest heart in a tournament’ and Seth Jellyman for being the ‘biggest little guy'.

However, thanks to a new initiative, Hannah is gaining both self-confidence and new friends.

Kōhine Māia, run by Sport Tasman, is aimed at empowering young women aged 12-18 through sport.

The subsidised programme allows members to experience sports such as waka ama, skateboarding, mountainbiking and stand-up paddle boarding.

Hannah joined Kōhine Māia two months ago after her mum spotted a post on Facebook advertising a free skateboarding lesson.

College and FC Nelson join forces for young players Staff Reporter Nelson College and FC Nelson have formed a partnership to provide young people with increased quality sporting opportunities.

The new partnership has Nelson College and FC Nelson working together to meet the needs of young people and help them realise their sporting ambitions.

Students will be able to play for their school teams as well as for FC Nelson.

Saffron Wilson was probably starting to think first-class cricket was a breeze after three consecutive innings without being dismissed.

The Nelson all-rounder spent four innings in the middle before finally losing her wicket after being promoted to open.

Saffron has also picked up four wickets in her first four appearances for the Otago Sparks.

Though her side has yet to register a win, Saffron scored 4*, 23* and 4* before being trapped in front for three against Auckland on Sunday.

She has also been making an impact with the ball, picking up 2/49 on debut followed by figures of 1/31 and 1/34.

Otago currently sits at the bottom of the New Zealand Cricket Women's One Day Competition table with four losses as the unbeaten Canterbury Magicians set the pace.

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base.

Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year.

“I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.”

Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.”

Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland.
