Demand soars for rentals Kate Russell

Levana Noema Grout and her one-year-old daughter long for a place to call home.

The 19-year-old single mum has been living in a Nelson motel room since July, as she navigates an evertightening Nelson rental market.

“I’ve probably applied for 60 to 70 places, and I look five times a day, every day.”

She says she’s doing everything she can to impress landlords but feels her “young mum status” along with her lack of rental history puts her at the bottom of the list.

“I’ve written a letter about myself and my situation. I present myself really well and talk to the owners or agents, but I still don’t get anywhere.”

Levana says it’s hard to call a motel room “home”.

“I can’t really call it a home. It doesn’t have an oven. People

are constantly watching me and there’s not much privacy.”

Levana moved to Nelson from Porirua two years ago and wants to stay here to pursue a career in animal care, which she is gaining from the Nelson Young Parents School.

She is looking at all areas of

Nelson and Richmond and is open to any number of bedrooms.

“I’m not fussy, I just need a home.”

Levana says she is exploring all options and is also on the Ministry of Social Development’s housing

register waitlist - however the number of Nelson applicants in the past 12 months has increased by 49 per cent.

“It’s quite disappointing, as a mother. There’s just not enough housing.”

The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust is one organisation which is working hard to turn the situation around, with director Carrie Mozena saying the situation is “absolutely” the worst it’s ever been.

The trust provides affordable and public housing for people in need. They have 44 houses and have recently purchased land to build another six two-bedroom homes.

However, Carrie says the level of need outpaces the rate at which they’re able to build.

“I have enormous empathy for the very high level of housing need out there. It's reaching further and further into our community. Incomes are flat, there are not enough affordable rentals and not enough public housing has been built in the last

30 years.

“We want to improve the pace of development and we’re hopeful for further local and central government investment.”

Kāinga Ora also have a goal to build 152 more houses in Nelson and Richmond over the next four

years.

“That will help, but the issue is, even with new building at full speed, it takes time to get houses on the ground.”

She also says people on low incomes are being “pushed” with a “sudden and significant” rise in market rents.

“During the Covid lockdown the government instituted a rent freeze, but the moment it was lifted, some landlords lifted the rents, not just $10 or $20 a week, but $60 or $70 a week.”

Meanwhile, Levana waits for some good fortune to come her way.

“Mentally, it wears me down,” she says.

“It stresses me out, I have to keep on top of it and being declined so many times is just … what’s the point. There are so many like me and its quite disappointing.”

Rushing to help Nelson families ahead of Christmas Erin Bradnock Nelson charities are racing to meet a sharp rise in demand as Christmas looms and more families are struggling this year following the Covid-19 lockdown.

Whakatu Women’s Refuge manager Diane Strong describes the pressures of Covid-19 and Christmas as “pushing a strained system into a tight bottle neck”.

"People are being paid for less hours, have lost their employment, and this has had a huge impact on poverty,” she says.

In the past, Diane says they have always relied on community generosity but says this year is an exception.

“We understand and don't want to put pressure on because a lot of our whanau of givers are now themselves experiencing the consequences of Covid.”

The refuge put out a call this week for donations to their communal cupboard as their kai supplies are running low.

“We would really appreciate dry and non-perishable foods that are basic pantry staples so that whanau can easily cook,” says Diane.

Kristy Rowe, manager of Helping Families Nelson, says there has been a lot of pressure on parents, especially since Covid.

“We hope we can relieve some of that pressure for families.”

However, they have found the community have exceeded their expectations for donations.

“We were hoping to gather at least 100 gift boxes but now we’ve collected over 300. The donations have blown us away,” says Kristy.

On top of the Christmas boxes, Helping Families have also been preparing for their annual Christmas giveaway on December 12 at the Headingly Centre from 10am, with clothes, food, furniture and more to giveaway alongside a Christmas party for the kids.

Nelson Foodbank is another essential service relying on community generosity and preparing for an expected rise in demand.

A spokesperson says since lockdown there has been a large

increase in the number of people who are finding themselves turning to their services.

“A food parcel can bring a huge relief especially if there are children in the house, especially around Christmas there are the added pressures of presents and a dinner which can make Christmas a very stressful time.”

Louise Parry from the Salvation Army says they are expecting a 20 percent increase in people requesting help with food parcels and gifts this year, as the last Covid related wage subsidies and benefits finish.

“There is a new cohort of people coming to The Salvation Army for help for the first time. But it’s those who are already struggling on very limited incomes who continue to be the most vulnerable.”

Trading a phone for a house may sound impossible, but that’s exactly what Nikita Picugin plans to do.

“It’s a bit of a wild idea, but we’ll see what happens,” says Barnardo's service manager for the Upper South Island.

He has called his unique fundraising initiative ‘Trade it up for Barnardos’ with the end prize being a house the charity can use in Nelson.

“That would be ideal. Our office space is great, but it would be lovely to have a space to work with kids and families that feels like a natural home.”

Inspired by a man from America who traded a paper clip all the way up to a house, Nikita has already made his first trade - the iPhone 6 for a Trek FX 1 road bike. He will keep trading against items of equal or higher value.

He won the phone for raising the most money for the organisation’s recent family violence fundraiser and thought it would be the perfect starting item.

“I’ve got a phone and I didn’t have anyone to pass it onto. I didn’t just want to sell it, so I thought ‘wouldn’t it be funny if I could trade it up’.

“It’s not an official Barnardos thing - I told them my idea and I’ve got a bit of time on my hands, so I’ll see how it goes.”

Nikita says trades don’t have to be physical objects and he is open to things like meet and greets or experiences, too.

At this stage the fundraiser will run until the end of 2021, when Nikita will evaluate the progress.

next year, then I’ll reassess things. I can always cash in and donate the money to the organisation. Either way there is no loss. But, who knows, I might get to a house by then.

“And if it works out, I’m keen to put up a big plaque at the house to acknowledge all the people who were involved. I just hope to have a bit of fun and meet some nice people along the way.”

Expert says climate plan may be inadequate Tracy Neal of RNZ Nelson city's climate champion Chris Cameron says planning for long-term sea-level rise of two metres might not be enough.

The council, which was among the country's first to declare a climate emergency, has released information that showed how coastal flooding could change under a warming climate, including a worst-case scenario of sea level rise up to two metres.

Cameron, who holds a PhD in Southern Hemisphere climate, said the science pointed to potentially greater change.

"Last time we had this concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, sea levels were at least five to 10 metres higher than they are now - some estimates have out them in the 20 to 25-metre range."

Nelson residents have been getting the detail on how their homes could be submerged by sea waters rising as much as two metres beyond the year 2150 if global temperatures kept rising.

Two weeks ago, 4500 property owners in Nelson City received letters telling them their homes and commercial buildings were at risk.

A public meeting late yesterday was a chance for residents of the coastal city to learn more from council staff and scientists.

Properties near the city's waterfront, within the central city and city fringes were now included in the council's new hazard overlay zone. Long term it means they might face flooding. Short term it means the rising water risk will be included on Land Information Memorandums, or LIM reports.

Tāhunanui Beach. He was not worried for himself, he said.

"Not really because... I'll be gone. I'm 86 and the statistics don't augur well for seeing it happen."

But he was worried about what it meant for the town's young people.

"When you look at the future it's desperate, and some of the maps show that - the future well ahead, but we don't seem to be able to look far enough ahead.”

Mayor Rachel Reese said sea level rise up to two metres was a worst-case scenario, if the climate continued to warm at its current pace.

"There are a range of scenarios that we can use and we decided to put all of them out. The "two-metre" scenario has been used by Tasman District Council and I think it's important that we align between the two councils.

"The boundary between us runs right up the middle of Tasman Bay, so I'd rather give all the scenarios than hold one back."

Thames-based coastal scientist Jim Dahm helped advise the council on where to draw the hazard lines.

He said coastal change was happening everywhere, but Nelson had one risk factor greater than others.

"Here you have very big tides, so you get a storm on top of that and you get very high sea levels. It's quite common here to get 3.8 to 4-metre tide ranges."

Luckily, the city had the 13km long, naturally-formed Boulder Bank to protect it.

But Dahm said even that might not be enough in future.

Reese said the uncertainty of climate change and sea level rise meant it was only possible to project what we know could happen, not what would happen.

More grandparents raising grandchildren Locally Owned and Operated

When Sharon Norris was first told she would have to take care of her fivemonth-old granddaughter she panicked.

“I was overwhelmed. I was scared. But you just have to do it.”

Tayla was taken off her mother as she could no longer look after her - partially due to a learning difficulty.

“I felt the same as a lot of grandparents do when their grandkids are handed to them. You know you have to do your best. That’s all that counts.”

It had been 20 years since Sharon had looked after her own children but she took the job on like thousands of others across the country. She is now the local coordinator for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren – an organisation dedicated to supporting families which find themselves in a situation where a grandparent becomes a primary caregiver.

Nationally, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren has had an increase in membership, from 3346 member families in 2016 to 5241 in 2020. These grandparents are raising more than 12,000 children.

In Nelson, Sharon says they support more than 90 families with some grandparents who are in their 80s looking after teenagers.

Tayla is now 14 and Sharon says that she has become a “beacon of light” in her own life. Tayla calls Sharon ‘mum’.

“I’ve been through some hard times and she has been the light of my life,” says Sharon. “She has kept me going in hard times.”

Tayla wakes up every morning at 5.15am so she can get a ride with Sharon to school in Richmond, where she works.

Tayla is then dropped off at her great grandmother’s house until school starts.

“It’s a routine that works,” says Sharon.

Tayla enjoys horse riding and art, which she says relaxes her.

“She is just wonderful,” says Sharon.

“She is very resilient.”

However, Sharon laments the difficulties that many grandparents suffer when taking on their grandchildren.

“We want to let them know that they are not alone. A lot of these grandparents have kids come to them in the middle of the night. Their parents might have been drug addicts. There are a lot of different scenarios.”

Sharon says the expectation put on grandparents is huge.

“The number of times you hear ‘you are a grandparent, so you have to do it’. I think it’s an expectation that that is their role in life.”

Sharon helps people navigate that challenge by liaising with lawyers and Work and Income where needed.

“Grandparents sort of slip through the gaps.”

That includes trying to access funding to support them. Often a child is on a ‘Unsupported Child Benefit’ which pays them a set amount for their needs.

However, many grandparents rely only on superannuation for income.

“If you have only got that income, you haven’t really got the ability to give what other families can provide. Nobody has any idea how tough it is.”

Supermarket build to affect traffic Jenny Nicholson

The building of a Countdown supermarket on the corner of Champion and Salisbury Roads will mean temporary changes to traffic flows.

“We have looked at ways to manage traffic during construction,” says Tasman District Council’s transportation manager Jamie McPherson.

Work will start in January, and they hope to have it completed in June/July 2021.

One short term change will be no right turn at the Champion Road roundabout for those coming from Nelson.

To ensure ease of access to the Richmond Aquatic Centre, Raeward Fresh, and surrounding businesses a temporary one-way road is being built to allow traffic to turn left into the area from the deviation.

Work on this was due to start in December but was well underway by the end of November.

Aquatic Centre marketing manager Crystal Gaiger says the process has been positive as there was a lot of consultation with them and there will still be access for their customers.

Before Christmas, work will also be done on the water mains in this area. Because there is a higher risk of water contamination while mains are worked on, water will temporarily be treated with chlorine.

The ‘no right turn’ access off the deviation and chlorine in the water are all temporary measures while work is being carried out on the water mains and roads.

Region bouncing back

The Nelson Tasman region has reeled in surprisingly strong results in the latest Quarterly Economic Monitor.

GDP for the September 2020 quarter is up 3.4 per cent compared to 2019. For the whole year to September, GDP is down only 1.2 per cent compared to a 3.3 per cent loss for the whole country, which is well ahead of previous forecasts.

Nelson Regional Development Agency chief executive Mark Rawson says he is cautiously optimistic because of the prospect of a number of headwinds in the short-medium term as we enter the traditional peak visitor period.

Building confidence and friendships through reading Erin Bradnock Nelson College and Hampden Street School students have been buddied up under a trial mentorship programme that gets the boys reading while growing their leadership skills.

Nelson College’s learning support aid Jennifer Arai set up the mentorship between year nine and ten students and young primary school children to get both parties’ confidence levels up.

“It’s a nice chance for the young men to do some good for others and it makes them feel good too,” says Jennifer.

The boys meet up in their pairs once a week to read together and often get a run around or draw with one another, too.

On Monday, seven-year-old Indie Schryvers was more interested in drawing chocolate bars with his year nine buddy Kobe Brownlee after their reading session together.

Jennifer says it’s been rewarding to see nominated students go from shy and hesitant to confident young leaders.

“These boys don’t often put themselves out there but once they get going, they find their confidence and enjoy it,” she says.

Mandy Lowther’s love of the outdoors sparked a desire to understand it.

The young science prodigy has always been fascinated with the natural world and her passion for learning has seen her claim the top academic prize at Nayland College.

When Mandy arrived home after being named dux, she was excited to show off the prize to her family.

However, with the house empty except for a man laying new carpet, she celebrated with the stranger.

“No one was home, just the carpet dude, so I was like to this random guy, ‘look at my

certificate’.”

She says while others would shy away from them, Mandy embraced the challenge of studying the sciences.

“I love those moments where it explains things you thought you already knew.”

For her internal NCEA results, Mandy achieved two excellence grades in both chemistry and biology, excellence and merit in physics and an A+ on her university math paper.

Despite her impressive marks, she wasn’t expecting the school’s top academic accolade.

“Some of my friends thought I was going to get it, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.”

Mandy’s win did not come without effort.

“I study quite a bit, but I enjoy getting good results, the work

is worth it in the end.”

After spending year nine through 11 at Cashmere High School in Christchurch, Mandy moved to Nayland to finish her college years.

“I feel like I’m ready to finish school, but I hope I can stay in contact with my friends and teachers.”

The 18-year-old will head to Otago University in 2021 to study biochemistry.

Mandy says she knows saving the planet is not a one-person job but hopes whatever she ends up doing makes a difference.

“I want to do something challenging and science-based that gets me in the outdoors, new stuff that hasn’t been done before. I don’t want to becloseminded to opportunities.”

Your Voice Modellers Pond: When the renewed discussion about the Modellers Pond was raised and commented on by readers in early July there was an equal number of letters for and against council's proposal, i.e. to save and restore the pond or council's plan to landfill the pond and turn the area into a recreation park.

Since then it appears that council have unduly fast forwarded the process, putting cart before horse, rejecting saving the pond and deciding to landfill and create the park, with construction beginning early in 2021.

This apparent urgency all seems out of order and in contrast to council's request to the Nelson public for feedback before December 6 on how the current draft Nelson Plan ‘manages Nelson's growth and development while caring for our environment and natural resources’.

It appears common knowledge that the Modellers Pond was originally a tidal estuary backwater in our harbour, i.e. it is one of our natural water resources and must be restored.

Surely, council must hold any further work or expenditure on the proposal and consider the feedback of the Nelson public on the whole issue of the Modellers Pond.

Members of the public who want to see the pond restored to its former glory are urged to send their supporting written feedback to Nelson City Council by hand, post or online before December 6, 2020.

Reply from Nelson City Council: In November, Nelson City Council’s sports and recreation committee voted in favour of progressing to the detailed design stage of the alternative option for the Tāhunanui Modellers Pond - filling the pond and creating a large, shared park area. Prior to this decision, council had investigated a wide range of options over a long period to find a solution for the weed and algae issues arising from the existing Modellers Pond. These investigations have included consulting the community and iwi, and consideration of the wider environmental impact of the various options. Council continues to receive feedback about the preferred design for the park, however a decision has been made that this design will not include keeping the Modellers Pond. Group Manager Infrastructure, Alec Louverdis ‘Protect us from floods’ say Monaco residents: I'm sorry, but I don't have a lot of sympathy here.

The warnings have been out for decades regarding climate change and rising sea levels.

There comes a stage when, in low lying areas, tidal flooding becomes an inevitably rather than a one-off 'act of God', or a 'one in 100-year' event. Councils cannot do a King Canute and hold back the oceans. I guess council could build a three-metre-high seawall right round the peninsula on the seaward side of the road.

But then we'd have residents complaining about loss of property values due to loss of sea views.

One solution could be to raise houses to stand on two-metrehigh stilts, like you see in Queens-

diabetic and it’s one heck of a battle everyday but we always tell him it could be a lot worse.

A lot has happened in Nelson over the past ten years and there to report on it all has been Nelson Weekly.

The locally owned and operated community newspaper was launched in September 2010 and has gone on to win a dozen business and journalism awards, including runner-up for Community Newspaper of the Year last year.

Nelson Weekly Ltd – now trading as Top South Media – was launched by Andrew and Sarah Board and the owners of the Waimea Weekly, Steve Page and Jenny Bates. In 2015 Andrew and Sarah bought Steve and Jenny out but the two papers continue a close relationship.

Growth and new premises:

It’s been a big few months for the Weekly. After celebrating its big birthday, it has also moved into a new office at 563 Main Rd Stoke, the former Stoke Post Office and, most recently, the Barbican Training Centre.

‘Connecting Communities’ is the slogan of Top South Media and the Weekly is proud of its involvement in Nelson. Each year the Weekly donates more than $250,000 worth of advertising to non-profit groups throughout the region.

The Weekly has also been involved directly in raising money for the community, whether it’s through sponsoring the Summit/ NBS/Nelson Weekly Rescue Helicopter Golf Tournament or helping raise more than $50,000 for youth suicide in the region alongside Nelson College. The Weekly prides itself on being a positive member of the community.

Then there’s the support or sponsorship of various sporting teams, schools and other community groups. Andrew says the community is at the heart of the company so it’s important to him that the Weekly reflects that.

More than 65 trees were propped up for last Friday’s grand opening of Christ Church Cathedral’s Tree Festival.

Following Covid-19, the organising committee was originally anticipating fewer numbers this year but were blown away by the support from the community.

“This year, the festival is a real celebration for our team of five million,” says organising committee member Bev Greig.

Committee members Erin Beatson, Jocelyn Smith, Dean Mike Hawke, Judith Fitchett, Chris Fitchett and David Lucas

have been working tirelessly to ensure this year’s tree festival is just as impressive as ever.

Dean Mike Hawke says the festival is has been running for more than 10 years and is about bringing people together and opening the church up to the wider community.

“As a place of Christianity, we see our space as a home base for Christmas and we want to open this space up for others to celebrate and share what Christmas means to them,” he says.

Groups from across the region have contributed to the festive space inside the cathedral including schools, charities,

craft groups, political parties and social groups.

The committee agrees that the festivities would not have been made possible if not for the help of community groups and business.

Glenn Roberts Electrical spared an electrician for a day as well as donating electrical cords to set up lighting through the cathedral.

New World Nelson donated gifts for the winners of the community vote for best tree and Nelmac gave up their time to install a hefty tree as the church’s centrepiece with the help of a scissor-lift donated

by High Reach Nelson.

The festival runs from 9am to 7pm each day until January 17.

Charles Anderson After being stymied by Covid-19, Dancing for a Cause is strutting its stuff once more – all in an effort to raise money for Nelson Tasman Hospice.

The popular event will take place on May 1 next year, and will have a new MC - Clinton Randell from the Edge, who was also a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.

“Their aim is to put on a spectacular show every two years and most importantly, to raise needed funds for amazing local charities and organisations,” says organiser Emma SilkeFrench.

The event was just eight weeks out when Covid-19 halted plans for the event.

“We were all but ready to put it on. Everyone was all excited and now it’s just about trying to build that excitement back up.”

Emma says almost all the people who bought tables have kept them along with sponsors who have stuck with the event.

"Rather than looking at the negative side we are looking at it like having an extra year to organise it all.”

It also features a new contestant in the form of Nelson Magazine editor Sarah Board, who will join eight other local personalities partnered each with a trained ballroom dancer. They will perform a ballroom dance in front of a panel of judges in order to be declared the Nelson Dancing for a Cause winner.

Dancing for a Cause held its first event in May 2018 to a sold-out crowd at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre, raising $111,000 for Nelson Tasman Hospice.

Fans welcome champion Mako home after win Jonty Dine and Peter Jones The Mako won a ferocious, stop-start contest 13-12, having to defend for all they were worth in the final stages as the home side threw everything into attack.

But hold on they did to earn a famous win, backing up their 2019 Mitre 10 Championship clean sweep.

This triumph though was harder earned, the Mako having to deal with a string of high-profile defections in the off season, plus the loss of home advantage.

However, as they have done so often recently, Tasman found the resilience and fighting spirit to find the way to victory.

Co-head coach Andrew Goodman put Saturday’s win down to “a lot of hard work and a lot of belief ”.

“Not many people were expecting that result, but we had belief, we just chipped away in the background and knew we had a performance in us that could win us back-toback titles.”

When asked to compare last year’s triumph with Saturday's effort, Goodman noted, “it was pure happiness to win it the first time, that will hold a very special place in my heart, but this is really satisfying”.

“I still can’t believe we have done it, it’s still a bit surreal, to bring it home to our franchise and our wee city is pretty special.”

It was Havili who would ultimately seal the victory with a penalty and turnover in the final minute.

The five-test All Black let out a roar of emotion as he stood over his defeated opposition.

The reaction was the culmination of a difficult season for Havili.

He was forced to spend time on the sideline following emergency bowel surgery and despite blistering Super Rugby form, was left out of the All Blacks squad to tour Australia.

“I’ve been through a bit of a tough year this year and it just

came out in that moment.”

For rookie Mako Anton Segner, the trophies keep on coming.

Just his first year out of Nelson College where he won the Moascar Cup, UC Championship and South Island championship, Segner can now add national champion to his rugby resume.

“It’s a dream come true, still hasn’t set in, unreal experience, an unreal team, and I couldn’t ask for a better way to start my professional career by winning a premiership.”

Segner says it was a tough watch from the sideline before the young flanker was thrown into to the cauldron at Eden Park.

Deputy mayor Judene Edgar says the Mako season reflects the year we have had as a region.

“It’s a great analogy, we have had our ups and downs, but we fought back in the end.”

Hames stays in the His All Black career may have been cut short, but Kane Hames’ involvement in rugby is far from over. He speaks to Jonty Dine about his journey from player to coach, referee and now, commentator.

Calling the shots The last place Kane Hames thought he would be after hanging up his boots was the commentary box.

In 2016, the former Nelson College prop, was at the top of his game – playing for the All Blacks just one year after he started a season with no professional playing contract.

Kane had played ten test matches and was proving himself at international level before a cruel twist of fate saw him suffer a concussion during a test match against Australia.

It put him out of action on the field. But soon he found his way into the commentary box.

Kane is now regularly sighted on TV with a microphone in hand.

“The commentary thing just happened. It was something I never planned on or ever thought about.”

Kane’s first stint on the microphone came during radio coverage of the All Blacks vs Argentina test in Nelson with Nigel Yalden “I was nervous, but it was easy,

Nigel did all the talking, he knew I had no idea what to say.”

From there it was Sky TV’s Tony Johnson who convinced Kane to give TV a crack.

“He and I had talked a lot during my career, he spotted me and asked if I wanted to do some TV stuff.”

The 32-year-old says he feels sorry for anyone who was subjected to his commentary debut.

“It was a game between the Māori All Blacks and Chile, I don’t think I had anything interesting to say and just bumbled my way through it.”

He says fans want to be informed and entertained.

“I did neither of those things, I came away ruminating for two weeks thinking ‘why did I say yes to that?’”

However, Kane’s confidence grew and as with everything else he has done in rugby, he quicky ascended the ranks and was commentating the Mitre 10 Cup final in 2019.

“More opportunities came up and TJ talked me into it.”

A year on, Kane was again tasked

with calling the premiership final at the weekend.

“Now I am trying to put some opinion in as opposed to just talking over what’s happening.”

He says, as a player, feedback was crucial, something not as prevalent in the broadcasting game.

“If nobody is talking about you on social media then you’ve probably done ok. I sometimes have a bit of a peek when I think I’ve buggered it up.”

Kane also incorporates personal values into his commentary.

He believes pronouncing a player’s name correctly is very important.

“Think of the hours it takes to play rugby professionally, to do all that work and to have your name butchered on TV, I take that pretty seriously.”

Kane says he wants to expand viewers' thinking around the game.

“I want to commentate in a way that make people love and understand rugby a little bit more.”

game he loves has made a rapid ascent in the refereeing ranks to mirror his playing career.

He had always planned to move into refereeing after playing, but made the transition earlier than expected.

“I was playing to learn as much as I could, I was always quite motivated to be a referee.”

Kane made his first-class debut in the Farah Palmer Cup match between Tasman and Hawke’s Bay in Motueka as an assistant referee.

As a former front rower, there is nothing that irks Kane quite like multiple scrum resets.

As a referee, he has done his best to ensure scrums stay up as much as possible.

He says watching rugby archives from the early 2000s, players take about 15 seconds to set a scrum as opposed to today where up to five minutes can be wasted on resets.

“There was a lot more rugby played back in the day, these are the little things I want to influence.”

His goal is to one day take charge of an international game, something no former All Black has ever achieved.

Molding future stars While promising on both the mic and whistle, Kane says his future in rugby lies with coaching.

Kane has been coaching since he was 16 and recently took on a role with the Nelson College First XV. His input has been immeasurable as Nelson has since claimed its second UC Championship and took out the prestigious Quadrangular Tournament in 2020.

His experience is almost unmatched, having formerly been the Rugby Development Officer at Bay of Plenty where he held almost every role imaginable - from setting up the fields to running out as the mascot.

Kane says he avoids scrum coaching to challenge himself in other areas.

“I try to stay away from being the scrum guy.”

Despite his All Black career, he doesn’t consider himself a mentor to his players.

“I just do what I can to enhance their rugby.”

Staying in the game Kane still suffers the effects of concussion with memory issues, fatigue, headaches

and mood swings.

“I’m still trying to figure out ways around it.”

However, other than perhaps a stint late in life with golden oldies, he accepts his playing days are over.

“I’m finished, definitely finished. I’m keen to move on. I made the decision about a month ago, but I should have made it a long time ago.”

In a life dominated by rugby, there was only one option for Kane post playing days.

“I have spent my days around rugby, and I am not leaving anytime soon.”

Though he still sometimes gets the itch to play, he has reset his sights on other aspects of the game.

“Whether you were a test or club players, everyone wishes they could still play, but I have fallen in love with commentating, coaching and refereeing. If you’re good enough, opportunities will open up.”

Jo Edwards calls time on epic career Jacob Page Jo Edwards was sitting in Auckland traffic when she made the biggest decision of her 20year international career.

The New Zealand bowls legend was heading across town to prepare for another night of commentary on a Bowls3Five event when the penny dropped.

“I was sitting at the traffic lights and I thought ‘I’m done’,” says Edwards.

“I almost said it out loud. That was the moment when I knew, yup, it’s time.”

Edwards had been pondering retirement for the last six months, “not that seriously though”, but those thoughts began to solidify in early November.

A series of “tough” conversations with her husband Dave made her realise it was time to draw the curtain.

“People have always told me ‘you know when you know’ and that is definitely true,” says Edwards.

“It’s always going to be hard and there is a definite sadness, but I also feel happy. It’s been 23 years – nearly half my life and this is perfect timing.”

The 50-year-old admits the unexpected Covid-19 chaos – which took her away from the greens for nearly eight months –

helped to crystallise her thinking.

“The [2020] World Championships event was always an aim,” says Edwards. “But it didn’t go ahead this year and who knows about 2021. But I also wanted to give Bowls New Zealand time to put together new teams and I knew if I wasn’t fully committed then it wasn’t going to work.”

Edwards is regarded as the greatest bowler this country has produced and has been a giant of the sport.

But it’s also a time to celebrate a remarkable career, encompassing a record 646 caps for the Blackjacks and a staggering array of medals and trophies, including five World Championship medals, three Commonwealth Games triumphs and an unprecedented six World Cup singles crowns.

Edwards struggles to pinpoint favourite memories but is particularly proud of winning world titles on all surfaces northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere and indoor. That requires remarkable versatility.

She also looks back fondly on the 2008 World Championship pairs title in Christchurch, playing alongside Val Smith.

“We are best mates. We have known each other since school so that was pretty special.”

Her toughest tournament was the last world championships in 2016.

“My mother had passed away a few weeks earlier so it was really hard,” says Edwards, who still picked up silver in the pairs and a singles bronze.

Edwards made her national debut at the Asia Pacific Championships in 2001, with her first match stretching across 18 hours.

“I’ll never forget it – it just kept raining,” says Edwards.

Of all of their encounters, the 2010 World Cup singles final in Warilla stands out.

“It came down to the last end,” says Edwards. “Every bowl changed who was going to win and I took it on the last bowl.”

Edwards is famously modest, and you won’t find her medals and trophies on display in her lounge room.

“No – definitely not, our home is our home ... it is not a shrine.”

Edwards isn’t completely sure what the future holds. She has

entered a few events across the summer – including the mixed pairs at the National Fours tournament– but it will be at a different pace.

Edwards will be forever grateful to all those who have been part of her life-changing journey.

“I’ve been so lucky,” says Edwards. “The success you have, the people you meet, the places that you get to see. But there have been so many people involved in my career, I’m so grateful to everyone.”
