The Great Nelson Weekly MP Debate saw an energetic exchange between those vying for the Nelson seat in Parliament.

The live-streamed event was the final chance that candidates of

the four major political parties got to spar ahead of the election on October 17.

Council faces $700k bill for non-compliant hardstand The Nelson City Council has been forced to spend an extra $700,00 on the Nelson Marina hardstand after it was found to be noncompliant.

Council was issued an abatement notice for the hardstand in March this year, due to consent requirements not being met.

In order to be compliant, the hardstand area needs to be sealed with asphalt and a new sand filtration system installed, replacing the current mussel shell system.

Work is expected to begin on the Hardstand in the last week of November, and take about four weeks to complete.

There are six bays currently in operation at the hardstand. The consented area for the hardstand covers an area the size of just two bays. Council has applied for a consent variation to allow six bays to continue to be used once work has been completed.

Group manager community services Roger Ball said council officers had been working as swiftly as possible to rectify the issues identified.

The works are estimated to cost $700,000, taken from capital expenditure allocated in 2020/21.

The local auctioneer behind the sale of Nazi flags and memorabilia is defending the decision, saying he does not take a view on the items they sell.

Lipscombe Auction House on New St held an auction over the weekend which included various WW2 memorabilia, including three flags emblazoned with the Nazi swastika for sale in its show room.

The sale of Nazi memorabilia is banned or at least restricted in a number of European countries, including Germany and France, but not in New Zealand.

However, auctioneer Warwick Savage says that they are an auction house and do not “take a view” on the items they sell.

“A few months ago, we sold a German dagger and no one minded … we stay neutral.

“If people want to complain on Facebook that’s fine … as an auction house we put up what people want to sell.”

Over the weekend police responded to a complaint of vandalism after the words ‘Nazi Scum’ were written on the auction house’s door.

New Zealand Jewish Council spokeswoman Juliet Moses says she recognises there is no law banning the sale of Nazi memorabilia, and some people collected the items as a matter of historical interest or record.

But the flags were also offensive to many Kiwis.

“It is highly disturbing for a range of New Zealanders.

The Jewish community finds it very disturbing and so do many other Kiwis, some of whom would have lost family members fighting the Nazis," she says.

Juliet says the flags would also likely cause hurt to the families of those killed and wounded in the horrific attack on the Christchurch mosques last year.

"I just hope the people who are selling them and the people who eventually end up buying them don't use them to glorify the regime and do put them

in the appropriate context and use them in the appropriate context," she says.

Lipscombe Auction House gave little description about the flags on its business page.

It is unclear if they are genuine historical flags from Germany or Nazi memorabilia created afterwards.

Juliet says while military gear from World War II might hold interest to collectors and researchers, it was hard to see the value in Nazi flags.

"These are just flags emblazoned with swastikas - they are simply emblematic of the Nazi regime.

It is hard to attach any other significance or value to them," she said.

"Even more so if they are not historical."

Online auction company Trade Me is among companies that have banned most Nazi items from being sold on its website.

Road options spark threat of legal action Jonty Dine Reporter

A team of ten local business and community groups are threatening legal action over Nelson’s Future Access Plan.

The group, which includes Progress Nelson Tasman, Nelson Tasman AA, the Nelson City Business Association and the Nelson Environment Action Group, say the project is biased and that they have lost faith in the Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.

In a letter sent to various councillors and NZTA management, the group says unless two of the proposed options are taken off the table, they will instigate cease and desist legal proceedings.

The options in question involve either priority lanes or widening the waterfront State Highway to four lanes plus a shared cycle-path.

The group says the material that has been provided to the public is misleading and incomplete.

“Waka Kotahi/NZTA and the councils were and are obliged to consult with any affected person in relation to the preparation of the Regional Land Transport Strategy including as it relates to

these proposed future transport alternatives.”

They say the stages of any consultation on any proposal must include a detailed assessment of the implications for the property owners or road users along the routes of Option 1 and 2.

“There is no evidence that a Safety Audit has been undertaken as is required by Waka Kotahi/NZTA’s procedures where safety is a significant effect.”

The groups also say the NZTA provided wrong measurements and misleading visuals in the public consultation and NFAP feedback.

Calculations made by the signatories claim numerous homes, businesses and historic buildings would be affected.

They say their measurements indicated almost 60 residents would lose their front yards by one metre to six metres.

“We remind Waka Kotahi/NZTA that it has faced the same legal ramifications in the past over this matter. That it presumes to attempt the same ruse now is a frustrating and disappointing attitude in the face of a community goaded beyond endurance by this latest round of wasteful, inaccurate, and incompetent manoeuvrings.”

Restored locomotive needs consent to operate Kate Russell

Nelson greyhounds take part in 'Great Global Walk' Erin Bradnock Almost two dozen greyhounds paraded through Nelson central on Sunday as part of the Great Global Greyhound Walk, celebrating rescued and retired racing greyhounds.

‘Greyhounds as Pets NZ’ joined the ‘Great Global Greyhound Walk’, a British event that went global in 2014.

Last year's event saw 275 walks across the globe promoting greyhounds as pets instead of racers.

“We just want to raise awareness for greyhounds and what awesome pets they are,” says greyhound owner Olivia Martyn, who adds there are a lot of misconceptions about the animals.

“People always say they must need heaps of exercise but they are the laziest

pet you’ll ever meet.”

The walk started and finished at Trafalgar Park and the best-dressed competition went to mini jockey Emily Nickles.

The group’s next walk is December 6 and Olivia says anyone who wants to participate or is interested in greyhounds should visit the ‘GAP Nelson and Marlborough’ Facebook page.

After spending the last decade painstakingly restoring a century-old steam train the Nelson Railway Society has been told they will need to obtain a resource consent before they can fire it up.

Volunteers have spent 10 years restoring the WF 403 steam locomotive - however Nelson City Council says a consent is necessary for the train to operate.

“Under the Nelson Air Quality Plan, a steam train fits into the definition of a large-scale fuel-burning device,” says group manager environmental management, Clare Barton.

The cost of the consent can vary according to its complexity.

Clare says council “acknowledges the hard work from the volunteers of the Nelson Railway Society over many years” on the restoration of the locomotive.

“Council officers have talked them through the process of such an application and offered any assistance we can within the legislative requirements of the Resource Management Act.” As well as the restoration of the locomotive, volunteers spent a further year widening part of the track at Founders Park for it to run on and dug out a 13m pit.

The WF 403 is one of three left of its kind in New Zealand. It was built in 1907 in Dunedin and operated there and on the West Coast before moving to Nelson in 1973.

The locomotive is not eligible for funding under council’s heritage project fund as neither the railway nor the steam train are listed as a heritage item in the Nelson Resource Management Plan.

The Nelson Railway Society did not want to comment at this stage.

Weekly debate heats up candidate On Sunday the Nelson Weekly hosted a local MP candidate debate in a pub. Editor Charles Anderson and Jonty Dine review the evening and what it might mean for the general election.

The Weekly hosting a debate in a pub has become a signature of our organisation. The format allows candidates to respond to one another, it allows the audience to interact with them and it has the opportunity to put those vying to represent Nelson on the spot.

Sometimes those candidates will thrive, sometimes they won’t.

Last weekend early voting opened for the general election that will occur on October 17. To make it manageable and understandable, and to avoid 10 people on stage trying to meaningfully answer a question, we limited our event to the four main candidates whose parties are currently in Parliament. Yes, it is a snapshot and means other in minor parties miss out, but our debate was just one of many events over the last few months.

We wanted to challenge those that we invited – Nick Smith, Rachel Boyack, Chris Baillie and Aaron Stallard on their political and personal views, so that the audience might get a better idea

about what they are voting for.

Nick urged voters to trust his 30 years in Parliament – that he knows how the systems worked and how to get things done for Nelsonians. He said that family, science-based decision making and community, were all his priorities, eliciting the first applause of the evening.

Rachel urged voters to trust in the leadership of Jacinda Ardern and her ability to navigate the country through turbulent times.

She also said that housing would be her top priority should she be elected as well as ensuring a new hospital for Nelson and a strong focus on mental health and climate change.

Aaron wanted transformational thinking in how to respond to the threat of climate change.

Chris wanted the Government to treat businesses better.

The opening question was in relation to Nelson's traffic issues and NZTA's varied proposals to solve the city’s transport problems.

His reply sparked the first interjection from both the crowd and fellow candidates challenging his inability to complete the project while in power.

Rachel said the route should not be built in order to maintain the air quality of Victory.

Aaron soon drew cheers from the crowd as he denounced the proposal to develop housing in the Maitai.

Nick and Rachel soon engaged in a heated exchange over state housing.

"Labour has no [credibility] left on housing," Nick said.

"It's not just about supply, it's about good supply," Rachel replied.

On the topic of Covid-19, Chris wondered how the country would get out of a forecasted $100 billion debt hole.

Nick commended the Government on its strong response in the aftermath of the virus' outbreak, but said the

treatment of the second outbreak was sloppy and asked everyone coming to New Zealand must be tested for Covid-19.

Rachel said she was incredibly proud of the Government's response to the pandemic.

"It is critical we get it right at the border, every New Zealander deserves to come home."

Challenged on a letter he wrote to the Weekly in which he lamented climate change "hysteria," Chris fumbled on his answer as he attempted to stand by his point of view.

"Climate change is real and anyone who does not accept that is on the fringe," Nick replied.

When asked who has smoked cannabis, all candidates raised their hands except Nick Smith.

Chris did not give his support to the legalisation referendum while Aaron said it was a "big yes" from him.

Rachel said she was in a "lean yes" space, while Nick argued if cannabis was used at the same rate of alcohol, we would see the same levels of harm.

On the euthanasia referendum, Aaron and Chris both said they will vote yes while Rachel and Nick both indicated they would vote against.

Other issues debated included the Treaty of Waitangi, youth mental health and the minimum wage.

Giving their final arguments Nick said there would be a time to pass the baton but his experience was crucial for these challenging times.

Rachel said she has already achieved plenty in the region and wants to achieve more.

Aaron and Chris both said it was time for new representation in Parliament.

The performances were varied. Nick showed that he is used to the format and formulating his arguments.

On occasion he seemed overly aggressive but that played into the tone of the event. Rachel seemed to get flustered when heckled from the audience, even going as far to engage with them, to the detriment of the flow of her argument.

Aaron hit his stride in the format later on, offering some humour, cheek and passion into the occasion.

Chris started the event saying that he was a political newbie and that showed. He was not even able to offer an issue that he was passionate enough about to create a potential policy of his own. But curiously, he is the most likely to enter Parliament as number 4 on ACT’s list.

Jobs at risk as international students dry up Kate Russell Secondary schools in Nelson may need to cut staff and classes in 2021, due to a “significant” decrease in international students.

Nelson College headmaster Richard Dykes told Nelson Weekly that he expects their international student numbers to be running at 50 per cent next year.

“The reduced numbers will reduce our 2021 budget. This impacts on our staffing and ability to fund some programmes

around the school,” he says.

“It’s premature to specify what that will look like. It may be that some staff ’s hours are reduced, or some positions are cut. Similarly, we may pare back some programmes, or possibly remove them.”

Cathy Ewing, principal of Nelson College for Girls, says their international numbers will be down by 75 per cent, unless the borders open early in 2021.

“This is a significant decrease. We have many students applying to come to our school from various

overseas locations, but we can only offer them a provisional place.”

Nayland College will be down from 80 international students to just six next year. “[This] will certainly have an impact on our school,” says principal Daniel Wilson.

He says the school is “determined” to not cut domestic programmes or resources.

“Our goal is to ensure that we do not jeopardise the quality of education for our domestic students.”

He says ways they are looking at reducing costs could be by not replacing departing staff, reducing administration support and staff taking voluntary leave.

Scott Haines, who is the vice president of the Secondary Principals Association (SPANZ) and also the principal of Waimea College, says while local schools have stable rolls, all principals are having to consider budgets and staffing for 2021.

He says that SPANZ is working with the Ministry of Education closely to address the issue.

“We’re working to get consideration of a further financial relief package for 2021 in the same way that the

Government allocated $20 million to support staffing, and that was welcome news.

He says that having the borders reopened safely is the long-term answer, but “now is not the time to do that”.

Scott also says a funding package would help keep specialist teachers to stay connected with work, and without one many teachers may move into new careers.

“There are experienced specialist staff who have a lot to offer, and

once they’re disconnected from the work force it is difficult to reengage.”

Beyond staffing, Scott says that international students and the revenue they bring directly impacts domestic students.

“The resource that the revenue brings in provides the rich curriculum experience that parents have come to expect, like lower class sizes, and subjects the ministry doesn’t fund.

Principals around the country are vexing about how to provide a world-class programme with a hugely-reduced level of resourcing.”

Meanwhile, Richard says Nelson College has developed a programme to support international students over the summer holidays, as they aren’t able to fly home and return to Nelson.

“We’ve arranged a combination of staying in the hostel, some time with local families and a trip around the South Island (to give them and our staff a well-earned holiday) and then back to the hostel to do some extra English language learning.”

Some international students at Nelson College for Girls are also staying on over the Christmas vacation to keep their places open.

Under Labour, public transport investment has increased by 163 per cent, while investment in walking and cycling is up 227 per cent. In Nelson, the government has invested in new public transport routes in Richmond.

Labour is using balanced transport investment to tackle long term issues like reducing emissions and easing congestion while creating jobs and boosting regional economies.

Rachel wants to work with both councils to ensure continued investment in public transport and walking and cycling infrastructure to help ease Nelson’s transport and congestion issues.

“I’ll seek support from central government for public transport, and cycling and walking initiatives,” Rachel says.

Rachel supported the students who that presented a 1000 signature strong petition to Nelson City Council, asking for better public transport.

“I’ve long been a supporter of better public transport for Nelson, so it’s great to see young people like Vienna van Heeswyck making her voice heard,” Rachel says. –“We know there are lots of people who would use more public transport if it were more accessible and frequent.”

Vienna van Heeswyck says public transport is important for young people.

“Not every person wants to drive a car into town every day, or can for that matter,” Vienna says. “We need to have other more sustainable options to help our city be in step with what the planet needs.”

Climate Change Front and Centre Labour is committed to tackling climate change, protecting our environment, and cleaning up our waterways. As we continue our COVID-19 recovery and rebuild, we’re going to invest in nature to support people into jobs now while protecting our environment for future generations.

Labour passed the Zero Carbon Act with a target of netzero carbon emissions by 2050. We also banned single-use plastic bags, and we’re committed to phasing out even more single-use plastic.

This year the Government announced $2.8 million for Nelson to clean up our waterways, including the Maitai River and the Waimea Inlet. This funding will create 44 jobs in the region.

Labour is committed to cleaning up our waterways and making our rivers swimmable again.

Plastic waste is a big issue for our environment.

“Our local rivers and waterways are littered with plastic waste,“ says Rachel Boyack, who is on the Board of the Nelson Environment Centre.

Labour is taking the next step in removing plastic rubbish from our oceans and environment by phasing out single-use and hard to recycle plastics such as polystyrene packaging, cotton buds and some cups. Labour has established a $50 million dollar fund for businesses to develop alternatives here in New Zealand, creating opportunities for domestic manufacturing.

Renewable energy is a top priority.

Labour will bring forward the goal of 100 per cent renewable electricity generation by five years to 2030. It will accelerate the electrification of the transport and industrial sectors, invest in emerging technologies such as green hydrogen, and continue to make energy affordable for New Zealanders.

“We’re planning now for New Zealand’s future energy needs to ensure New Zealand has stable, sustainable and affordable energy, while also protecting jobs and industries,” Rachel says.

No slowing down for mechanics of VTNZ's over 70s clubs Erin Bradnock Three local mechanics have three things in common – they are all in their 70s, they all work at VTNZ Pascoe St, and they all have no plans on slowing down.

“Retirement is just a name for something, if you’re fit and still healthy there's no reason to stop work,” says 74-year-old Michael Stayner, who has been at VTNZ for 10 years. “I mean, what would I do? Walk around the house?”

The team at VTNZ not only accommodate the older trio but they celebrate it. Colin Gillespie, 75, Peter Walton, 73, and Michael were gifted with a cake last week with “222”, their collective age, iced on the top.

“Whenever I ask about retirement, I just get a blank look,” says their manager Boisey Colling.

Peter and Michael have dropped down to 32 and 35 hours respectively, while Colin continues to work full-time after 17 years with VTNZ. “This is the longest I’ve worked at any one spot, the whole team

here is a good and close-knit team,” says Colin.

“I don’t think I’ll make it to 20 years of service, but who knows,” he says.

Colin says his Fitbit reaches 10km of walking each day on the job. Michael agrees that the work keeps him fit and believes keeping active is the key to ageing well.

Peter says it’s the important work of road safety that gets him up each morning, and the high quality of work they deliver.

“I believe we have one of the best systems in the world,” says Peter.

“I did retire for three months but you need a reason to get out of bed and I can’t think of a better one.”

Outside of work, Peter says his two rescue greyhounds keep him busy. Michael can be found working in his garden on the weekends as Covid-19 restrictions have kept him from travelling.

Colin dreams of having enough money to visit his daughters in Europe and having more time for winemaking once he’s ready to retire. His Italian son-in-law

“The banter and the fun we have makes up for the stress of the work,” says Michael.

“There’s a lot of cheek flying

around,” says Peter. “I’ve worked at shops up and down the country, and here has been the best. The staff really make it that way.”

Nelson Matters Housing is a major issue for Nelson as rents and house prices soar. These increases are impacting on those struggling to find a home to rent, first home buyers unable to get a foot in the door and businesses unable to get skilled staff to move to Nelson for lack of housing.

Labour’s answer at Election 2017 was Kiwibuild. The promise of 100,000 affordable homes was Labour’s flagship policy repeated in campaign pamphlets, candidate and street corner meetings by the Nelson candidate. She said Nelson would get at least 1,000 Kiwibuild homes. None have been built. None are under construction. None are planned.

Kiwibuild has wasted huge sums of taxpayer’s money and delayed new private sector housing.

The developer of 200 homes in Toi Toi Street says the mucking around by Kiwibuild bureaucrats has only delayed the Victory project that is now proceeding without Government support.

The lesson of Kiwibuild is that there is no single magic bullet to our housing problems. The Government cannot build houses faster or more cheaply than building companies. We need to change the laws and rules that make developing housing so slow and expensive, help Councils with the infrastructure costs, help first home buyers with get-

ting a deposit, stop adding costs to the rental sector and give more support to the community housing sector.

Replacing the Resource Management Act that makes it so expensive to create new sections is National’s top priority. We bypassed it in Christchurch after the earthquakes and the costs of renting and buying a house is now better there than any part of New Zealand.

The Homestart scheme I introduced as Minister in 2015 that gives grants of up to $20,000 towards a deposit has helped over 80,000 people buy their first home including 2,300 in Nelson and Tasman. The numbers being

helped is declining. The problem is that the house price caps have not kept up with the 25% increase since 2017. These need adjusting to realistic levels.

Nelson rents have gone up $68 a week under Labour over the past three years compared to an increase of $20 for the previous three years under National. The issue is Labour keeps loading extra costs and regulation on the rental sector that gets passed onto tenants. National will pull back on excessive regulation.

Building more state houses is part of the solution. Labour has demolished and sold more state houses than they have built in the last three years in Nelson and

Tasman. The Government needs to partner with our wonderful community housing organisations like Habitat for Humanity, Abbeyfield and the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. The Trust built 14 new homes in Nelson between 2014-17 but none since under Labour due to the grant scheme being stopped.

The last part of the housing puzzle needing attention is a growing group of homeless Nelson people with complex mental health and addiction needs.

These people need to be funded into supported housing like that provided by the Salvation Army in other parts of New Zealand.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was mobbed in central Nelson last week as crowds of admirers gathered around her trying to catch a glimpse or a selfie with the Labour leader.

On Thursday, she visited the Nelson Food Factory and Pic's Peanut Butter before making her way into central Nelson.

Ardern spoke to various food companies which had made use of the Food Factory, which was helped by Provincial Growth Fund investment of almost $780,000.

The factory includes four commercial food-grade kitchens, a warehouse and chiller space, staff amenities, and a presentation kitchen for visitors and customers.

to launch investigations to ensure New Zealanders are paying a fair price for groceries and building supplies as the economy recovers from Covid-19.

Ardern says a recent market study into fuel costs had shown prices were too high at the pump, which led to "swift action" to address pricing

and competition to help lower prices at the pump.

Now two more market studies will look into the price of groceries and building supplies.

Labour says the studies will answer questions and concerns raised that Kiwis are paying more than they should for these products.

New Sport Tasman project aims to empower youth Jacqui Rawson Sport Tasman has launched a new programme to provide opportunities for young females to be more active, build confidence and try out new experiences.

The organisation’s new project, KĹ?hine MÄ ia, is about providing community connection for 12-18-year-olds to allow them to thrive. “We’re passionate about supporting young girls to find a connection to being active that is tailored to them and their unique needs,â€? says project advisor Ash Cowper.

Sport Tasman submitted and received a grant from Sports New Zealand and are in the first year of the three-year project.

Starting in late February this year, the Covid-19 lockdown allowed the project to look at how they reach out to the girls.

It was also a chance to investigate what providers are out there and what they do in terms of youth engagement. “We want to create the relationships between the organisations and the youth so there aren’t too many missed opportunities,� says Ash. The project works closely with

Make your home presentable for prospective buyers The spring-summer season is often the ideal time to put your home on the market in Nelson, but before you do it, you will want to get your place looking as presentable as possible.

A&P Show charges ahead Locally Owned and Operated

Jacqui Rawson The region’s A&P show will go ahead, organisers say.

Despite most A&P Shows around the country not going ahead this year, the Richmond show organisers are dedicated to ensuring they carry on.

“Not having our show has never been an option,” says show manager Annette Robinson.

Annette says she is staying determined that the show will go ahead in some form in November. If the worst happens, and the country goes back into Level 2 lockdown, then the show will be limited to contestants and members only.

“As it stands now, the show will most assuredly go on.”

This year it’s shaping up to be more exciting than previous years with new shows and competitions being held for the very first time.

There will be an Excavation Operator Competition, led

by Civil Contractors New Zealand where operators will be competing to showcase their digger skills with up to ten tasks.

Things like painting a sign on a piece of paper or lifting a teapot and pouring into a teacup – all with their digger.

Another new event is the Mounted Games where there will be games on horseback, showcasing speed and agility where pairs compete in laneways.

There will be other changes for this year’s show relating to layout. All kids’ activities will now be easier to find and take pride of place at the front of the grounds. That includes things like the animal barn, the Town & Country Vet animal nursery, sheep and goats and the woodchoppers.

The lack of other A&P shows around the country also benefits the local area as the competitors not able to

compete elsewhere in New Zealand are flocking here to compete. The wood choppers, for example, will have a big turnout as they’ll be coming from all over New Zealand.

And there’s always the trades exhibitions to check out businesses old and new.

Broadgreen ‘super non-heroes' Arts festival takes to the streets set to take the stage Staff Reporter

Sara Hollyman Characters the likes of Wet Blanket, Golden Boy and Smellanator are set to entertain the crowd at the 2020 Broadgreen Intermediate production next week.

The show titled ‘Super nonHeroes’ is originally an American script that has been “Kiwified” by the cast of students, according to the show’s director Jennie Ricciardi.

The show is based around an intermediate school for students who have superpowers but don’t yet know how to control them.

“There’s really strong themes that come through and it’s really a story of belonging and friendships and negotiating those tricky things, but the strongest theme is about believing in yourself,” says Jennie.

The cast of Broadgreen Intermediate’s production is set to impress at the show next week.

She says, although auditions began right as lockdown hit, they made the decision the show would go ahead no matter what. After suffering another setback to putting the show on, after Level 2 was announced, the cast is

set to impress when they hit the stage on Wednesday 14 October.

“I’m just so impressed with the dedication from all of the students and staff, the crowd can expect to see a range of really funny original

characters that the students have rescripted to include a bit of Kiwi slang.”

Tickets are available from the Broadgreen School office for a 7pm show on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 October for $5.

Kirby Lane and New St are the centre of Nelson Arts Festival action this week.

Tomorrow night there is a variation on drivein movies. Instead, organisers want you to bike in to Kirby Lane and enjoy live Latino performances and learn about Hispanic and Latino culture on the big screen, between 8pm and 9pm.

There will also be live performances from 7.30pm, guaranteed to bring Latino-style ambience into central Nelson.

On New St there is also a collaboration between Nelson Arts Festival and the street’s bars.

As well as hosting the five festival events listed here, bars and venues in New Street will be open so you can grab a drink before or after a show.

Street Singing is also coming to Nelson. On Friday at 5.30pm discover the artist within yourself with the support of Klezoum and the Voice Collective.

The Voice Collective branches out at Kirby Lane for an hour of music with an Eastern twist. We invite you to join the band with your voice or play percussion. Join them in song at the end of the working week—expect an uplifting and slightly random experience.

Nelson College ended its season in style after taking out the prestigious Quadrangular tournament last week.

Nelson defeated Christ's College in a topsy-turvy encounter in which the hosts ran in five tries to four to defend its crown.

Down 15-14 at halftime, Nelson rallied in the second to shutout the Christchurch side and farewell its year 13s in ideal fashion.

Jacob Kingi Neha-Manihera was immense for Nelson at number eight, Tuterangi Stone-Williams ensured clean possession at lineouts while Ollie Inch and Keaton Fry muscled up in midfield.

Will Thornalley played his best game of the season at halfback and was backed up by the astute Cooper Grant at ten.

Captain Charlie Perkins was ecstatic following the final whistle.

As Charles Dickens once wrote “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” and the same could be said about our last season here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway. Our what was looking like a good season was abruptly put to a sudden stop by the Covid-19 pandemic and although you would need a crystal ball to see how this season pans out the Nelson Speedway Association will still forge ahead with what is to be another exciting season of top of the shelf speedway. If all goes to plan, we will be hosting four Speedway New Zealand titles this season with South Island championships for Three-Quarter Midgets on the

20th March and the ever impressive Sprintcars on the 13th February. Also, on the seasons programme are two New Zealand Grand Prix with the hard hitting Streetstocks on the 23rd January and the crazies of speedway, the sidecars, on the 5th and 6th of March (awaiting council approval for two-night meeting).

Another big meeting we will be hosting this season is the PTS Superstock Stampede on the 12th December. after two failed attempts due to bad weather and the Covid-19 virus it’s third time lucky for the club to host this big Superstock event. One we hope will be successful enough to host on an annual basis. Another

meeting which will prick a few peoples interest is on the night of the Three-Quarter Midget South Island championship we will also play host to a Modified reunion put together by the Nelson Speedway Association and some of the retired modified drivers from a few years ago.

The idea is to host a dinner for past and present Modified drivers on the Friday night then have the Modifieds race here the next night. At this staged we are hoping to have the 1NZ, 2NZ and 3NZ cars here along with visitors from the North Island as well as the South. Modified used to be strong here in Nelson so its going to be great to see them

favourites like the Trackman Trophy night (opening night this weekend 10th October) the Coca Cola Fireworks night on the 24th October, Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcars on the 28th November, The Child Cancer Foundation fundraising night on the 9th January which will feature the Ministock Mania and the CCF Trophy for the Quarter Midgets.

Finals footy in Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

The Nelson club football season wrapped up with a senior cup finals day featuring teams across four mens divisions and two womens divisions hosted by FC Nelson at Guppy and Neale Parks on Saturday.

FC Nelson capped its season in stellar style, dominating the division one league champions Blenheim Rangers 3-1 to

win the Price Charity Cup. FC Nelson played superbly in front of their home crowd to win the silverware. In the division one women's final the Richmond Foxes were too good for Nelson Suburbs, claiming the cup in a 4-1 win.

In the second division Gould and Tout Cup, Nelson Suburbs Seals beat Motueka 3-2 in extra time. Tahuna FC also

needed extra time to beat the Richmond Hornbills 3-2 in the third division cup while the Richmond Bogans beat Mapua 2-1 in the fourth division Greg Brown Memorial Cup. Finally, Golden Bay beat Mapua to win the womens second division cup.

Wild weather hampers starling regatta Staff Reporter It was a wild ride for both sailors and organisers at the 2020 Pic’s Peanut Butter Starling National Championship in Nelson last week.

A vicious northerly front blew through overnight with gusts of 50 knots.

Day one dawned with a 25-30 knot northerly and a sea state in The Cut that meant the race committee elected to set a course and race inside the harbour, making for grandstand viewing from the shore.

The next day saw the sea state flatten off and the sailors get out into the bay for two races. Local Noah Malpot achieving the top race result for a Nelson sailor with a sixth in conditions that suited his light weight.

At the mid-way point, Naomi Ferrissey of Murray’s Bay YC in Auckland was leading the fleet.

Day three brought bitterly cold conditions. With the sailors halfway through the first race, the southwesterly kicked in hard causing capsize carnage and some busy times for the safety boat team.

The race committee shortened the course and sent the sailors’ home.

In the end, with three races in fantastic fresh conditions on the last day, the race committee completed the eight races scheduled.

Nathan Vince from Kohimarama Yacht Club took out the national title with consistently good results across all eight races and a net score

of 13 points.

Naomi Ferrissey of Murray’s Bay Yacht Club was second with 22pts, and Wakatere Boating Club’s George Pilkington was third on 40pts.

The top local sailor was Ben Mangin in 24th.

Davor returning to Nelson Jonty Dine A familiar face in footballing circles is returning to the region and will bring his wealth of experience to FC Nelson.

Davor Tavich has been courted by the club to take up a role as Football Development Officer in a bid to grow the game in Nelson, particularly women’s football.

Davor, currently head coach of Wairarapa United, brings a coaching resume dripping with excellence.

The position was brought to Davor’s attention when his partner forwarded a Facebook post advertising it.

“The opportunity came up with the club and I thought it was a good chance to go back to FC where I spent a few years playing and coaching.”

Davor says what excites him about the role are the ambitious goals of the club.

“It’s another challenge, to see if I can contribute to those plans. They are looking for the future and are really serious about where they want to get.”

continue to coach at some level at FC. “I need to coach, it’s what makes me really happy. I enjoy all the stresses and joys with coaching.”

Davor holds an Oceania A licence, the highest coaching qualification available on these shores.

Hailing from Split in Croatia, Davor settled in Nelson and played for local teams Metro and FC Nelson.

Club president Philip Thompson is thrilled to have Davor join the FC Nelson family.

FC Nelson came into being in 2011 with the amalgamation of Nelson United, Metro, Nelson City and Tahuna Juniors.

Philip says one of the goals of the club is to bring football to the forefront as a viable sport for women.

“Within two years we want to establish a FC Nelson team in the Women’s Premier League.”

Davor says the Nelson footballing community has a lot of good people who love what they do.

“I will be happy to be back, see my mates and enjoy the sunshine.”

A team of local rowers were treated to a session by world champion and three-time Olympian Emma Twigg last week. The Nelson Rowing Club were the winners of the Dulux Rowing Renovation Competition held earlier this year which entitled them to an exclusive training session with Emma in addition to Dulux paint and accessories to renovate the club. Emma took a team of 30 junior club members out on the water for a row. The budding young rowers also got the chance to ask Emma about her accomplished career. Local rower Chenae Smith says having the chance to train with Emma and get some insight into what it takes to become an elite athlete was a “very surreal experience” and “incredibly inspiring”. Unbeaten run comes to an end for Mako Jonty Dine Reporter

After a 15-game unbeaten run stretching back to 2018, the Tasman Mako have been defeated at the hands of an inspired North Harbour side.

North Harbour coach Kieran Keane came back to haunt his old side with an historic 40-24 victory at Albany on Saturday.

Little went right for the visiting Tasman team who were at one stage down to 13 men after being decimated at scrum time.

The Mako managed just three tries, two of them intercepts against the run of play, as they struggled to find any sort of attacking rhythm.

Mitch Hunt and Bryn Gatland traded penalties to open the scoring, North Harbour taking a 6-3 lead with a strong breeze behind their backs.

Then, with Harbour hot on attack, Mark Telea picked off a Gatland pass and went 90 metres untouched to score against his old side.

The hosts enjoyed a sustained period of dominance and cashedin with winger Jared Page dotting down in the corner.

Gatland struck his third penalty right on the siren as his side took a 16-10 lead into the break, the first time Tasman has trailed at halftime this season.

Harbour would continue the momentum after the break, its dominant scrum leading to both Isaac Salmon and Sam Matenga being sent to the bin.

With Tasman under the pump, down to 13 and conceding another three points, Finlay Christie nabbed a second intercept and went in

under the bar.

The Mako survived the two-man disadvantage but North Harbour stretched its lead when Luteru Tolai rumbled over on the back of a surging rolling maul.

A rare mistake at the back by David Havili handed Harbour a third try to James Little to effectively seal the result for his side.

It was a frantic Mako team desperately searching to keep its record intact in the final ten, but errors plagued the defending champions.

The nail was hammered into Tasman's coffin on the brink of fulltime through replacement prop Teague McElroy as the hosts took maximum points from the stunning scalp.

Captain Havili picked up a consolation try but the Mako had been well and truly out-played by a ruthlessly efficient Harbour outfit.

Co-head coach Andrew Goodman was straight to the point when asked where the problem lay.

“Well, [giving away] 20 penalties and with your set piece under as much pressure as it was out there, it’s always going to be a hard afternoon, especially when you give a quality team like Harbour that many opportunities inside our own half.”

Tasman maintains its spot atop the Premiership table with Auckland now trailing by just one point.

Next weekend the Mako will host Bay of Plenty at Trafalgar Park in Nelson.
