I hope you have had a wonderful Christmas Day and are now getting the chance to relax with friends and whanau.

What a year 2019 has been! Our smart little city has been buzzing with activity this spring with the 25th anniversary of the Nelson Arts Festival, the international Aorere Enduro mountainbike race, and a civic ceremony to present the key to the city to the Tasman Mako, in recognition of their win of the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership.

Our Nelson City Brass Band triumphed at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships with a decisive win, followed by their promotion to the A grade in August. It’s been a real source of pride to see such a Nelson

We have also enjoyed a wonderful day of ODI cricket as the Black Caps hosted England at Saxton Oval. And the Christmas festivities started in style with the fabulous Santa Parade, a magical community-focused, family event. There is plenty on the calendar already for 2020, starting with our New Year’s Eve

countdown in the central city, followed by Bay Dreams, the Buskers’ Festival and Opera in the Park – to name just a few!

A real feather in our regional development cap has been the opening of Nelson Airport’s new $32 million terminal, with the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, cutting the ribbon. The state-ofthe-art timber icon is a credit to all involved in this legacy project.

None of these achievements or events would have been possible without the contribution of everyone in our community.

Our community partnerships are integral to making Nelson such a special place in which to live, and I acknowledge and thank you for your generosity of spirit and the efforts you make year-round to look after each other.

As we focus on enjoying another summer in Nelson Whakatū, be kind to each other, and be safe on our roads and on the water. And remember, whilst many have the chance to take a break, retail workers, hospitality staff, medical teams and emergency crews are busier than ever, so we thank you for your mahi.

‘Stay safe on our roads’ Sara Hollyman Reporter

It could be your brother, your mother, your best friend, or even ourselves - that’s the message police are sending to drivers over the busy holiday season.

“If that’s not reason enough to drive safely, I don’t know what is,” says acting national road policing manager superintendent Amanda Steel.

The message comes as 23 lives have already been lost during the first few weeks of December.

“As people head away for the holidays, we want them to remember that safety comes first at all times. The people around you on the road are people’s loved ones, possibly your own,” she says.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is also reminding those travelling through the South Island to expect the unexpected.

“We have had some major storms, slips and flooding in this lead-in to Christmas which is not what many people think of as summer weather,” says NZTA journey manager Tresca Forrester.

“But if people at least check our website’s traffic and travel journey planner pages ahead of time, as well as the MetService forecast, they will have some idea of what the journey could be like and they can be well

NZTA earlier this month released data showing when the heaviest traffic times have historically been on routes across the country.

Between Nelson and Blenheim traffic is historically heaviest from Boxing Day through to January 3, generally between 11am and 4pm.

The police’s Amanda Steel says it can be easy to get distracted at this time of year as everyone has a lot on their mind.

“But if you’re driving a vehicle you need to give that task your full attention.

“It’s doing the basics that will keep you safe this summer; watch your speed and your following distances, stay focused – put your phone out of reach – wear your seatbelt, and always driver sober and alert.”

She says police will have a strong and visible presence on the roads this summer “because we want everybody to get safely to their loved ones and their holiday destinations”.

“We can’t be on every road at all times or sit in the car beside you to remind you to pay attention, slow down, or take a break.

“Please make sure you treat everyone on the roads around you like you would your loved ones; with respect and patience.

Let’s all enjoy a safe holiday season.”

During the period of 4pm Friday 20 December to 6am Monday 13 January a speed threshold of 4kmh will be in place.

If you exceed the speed limit by more than 4kmh and are detected by a safe speed camera, you will be ticketed.

Cruise season to hit Nelson Sara Hollyman Reporter

Nelson is set to host another bumper summer cruise season including, for the first time, two ships in port on the same day.

The season will begin on January 2, with the arrival of Seabourn Encore; a luxury liner carrying more than 600 passengers. That will be the first of seven ships set to berth in Nelson over the

summer season.

Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says they have been working closely with Port Nelson to ensure all visitors have a great experience while here.

“The big one for the cruise ships is the double arrival on January 26,” he says.

“This will see half of the 2000 visitors staying in the city to explore, so we’ve been working with retailers to make sure Nelson is open for business.”

Prepare for a close encounter with the Moon this summer – literally. The Nelson Provincial Museum has launched its latest major exhibition into the Nelson Tasman orbit and it boasts one of the rarest objects on Earth - a genuine piece of Moon rock from Apollo 11’s historic Moon landing. ‘Our Moon: Then, Now & Beyond,’ offers visitors an out-of-this-world experience of epic proportions. The exhibition features UK artist Luke Jerram’s spectacular Museum of the Moon installation. Museum chief executive Lucinda Blackley-Jimson says this glowing, four-metre diameter orb is wrapped in high-definition NASA lunar surface imagery – it’s sure to send you spinning. The two ships combined will bring almost 2000 passengers and more than 1000 crew members to town for the day.

Simon says, while Nelson will never be able to accommodate the larger passenger ships due to the size of the port’s entrance, the boutique liners that do visit are great for the local economy.

“If you think of the main trunk line down New Zealand, we’re slightly left of that, so we get more of the specialist boutique ships,

which is great.

“They’re the people that are interested in the food, the fashion, the retail, as well as the other great experiences we have to offer.”

Of the two ships arriving on January 26, the Seabourn Encore will be in the early stages of a 22day cruise from Auckland to Bali, with passengers paying between $5800 and $9000 to be on board.

The all-suite, all-balcony luxury liner boasts of being one of the

top cruise ships in the world, with its high space and service to guest ratio.

Simon says there will be buses organised to ferry the passengers into the city, and the port is looking at putting on entertainment.

“You’ll notice an extra 1000 people in town on the Sunday,” he says.

The season will finish on Tuesday February 18, with the departure of MS Europa at 6pm.

Fire report raises communications concerns Tracy Neal

The head of Nelson-Tasman's emergency management group says better communication with the public is needed around emergency cordons.

A detailed report on the response to the Pigeon Valley wildfire in February, which triggered the evacuation of 3000 people, was released in Richmond last week.

The independent report consolidated the findings of several workshops, and found the multi-agency response was efficient and saved lives.

But Roger Ball accepted it was a stressful time for many people, who had to leave their homes, pets and livestock at short notice.

"We've acknowledged that our communication and processes around

evacuation and cordon management was where we felt there was a lot of anxiety, a lot of stress and that we could have done a better job to mitigate that, and make our processes a bit smoother," Roger said.

"What we heard afterwards was that it worked better in the early stages when things were still 'forming up' - but as more agencies became involved and processes became more formalised, it slowed down and people felt it was harder to find out what was going on and we were slower to respond."

He said a process that was designed to assess risk carefully, keep people safe and get people back home efficiently, created the unintended consequence of making things slower and more complicated than what they should have been.

Roger said cordon management was complex, but people also needed to be

better prepared to leave home during a large-scale emergency. He said once a state of emergency was declared, authorities had the power to evacuate people even if they wanted to remain.

The report said there was no loss of life or serious injury during the threeweek emergency declaration, due to the professionalism of emergency responders and the Nelson and Tasman councils.

Roger said the report made several recommendations, which had started to be addressed, including public education about fire readiness at the start of summer, and flood preparedness in early winter.

They also needed to improve the process around getting livestock and animals to safety. Roger said that during the fires this was inconsistent and caused concern.

Beach bus is back: The Summer Beach Bus service will be running again this summer from 27 December until 9 February, including public holidays. The double-decker bus runs throughout the day between Tahuna Beach Holiday Park and Nelson i-SITE (Trafalgar Street bus stop), stopping at Tahunanui Beach in each direction. The bus leaves the Nelson i-SITE on the hour and Tahuna Beach Holiday Park on the half-hour. The first bus of the day will leave Trafalgar Street outside the i-Site at 10am and the last bus will leave at 6pm. There will be no service at 1pm to give the driver a break. The cost is just $3 for adults and $1 for children each way.

NYE in Nelson: Nelson’s central city New Year’s Eve Countdown is a great place to celebrate your way into another decade.

This popular annual outdoor event on Upper Trafalgar Street is ever-evolving; this year Nelson City Council has introduced a session specially for children from 8–10pm.

The family programme of entertainment and performances will culminate with a kids’ own countdown and fireworks. Changing of the Coastguard’s Harbourmaster guard Old4New is back Charles Anderson Editor

Outgoing Nelson Harbourmaster is excited to be handing the reins to Andrew Hogg, after 10 years in the job.

Andrew Hogg has been a banker, a navy commander and last week made the latest transition in his varied career – taking up the reins as Nelson’s new Harbourmaster.

Andrew has come into the job to replace Dave Duncan, who is heading off to help run the port in Broome, Western Australia.

“For me, it was time to think of what I was going to do. My plan was to retire next year but I got an offer to help in Broome,” says Dave.

Harbourmasters are responsible for safe navigation in the harbour – both for recreational and commercial vessels.

Dave says it’s been a challenging 10 years in the job, with the region growing and ships getting bigger and bigger.

“You either move with those changes or become a secondary port where you have to export to a dozen other places before you can get a product to market.”

He says there has been many changes to help with that process, including bringing in new tugs and identifying new challenges.

“It’s a demanding job and I think

I’m leaving at the right time because it does need some fresh breath.”

Andrew says he is excited to come into the role – having most recently been a navy commander, helping combat everything from humanitarian crises in the Pacific to illegal fishing in New Zealand’s waters.

However, he says his new role will be demanding in a different way.

“At the end of the day the principle is the same – it’s about furthering interests of New Zealand or the local community. The port is really influential in building the prosperity of the region.

“There are different complexities you need to deal with in the jobs.

I’ve been drinking from a fire hose just trying to take it all in.”

With the summer period upon us, they both say it’s the time when people get new toys and need to be safe on the water.

For the last four years in a row, people have been down at Tahunanui Beach with swimming pool toys, which are inappropriate for the conditions.

“With an offshore wind and bang people are out to sea before they know it,” Dave says. “So, leave those at home.”

Following five successful years, Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade will once again be motivating Kiwis to check and upgrade their most important piece of boating safety equipment.

Nelson boaties will have the opportunity to bring their old, damaged or ill-fitting lifejackets next month.

Since its introduction, Old4New has greatly assisted Coastguard in its mission of ‘Saving Lives at Sea.’ Over 13,500 old lifejackets have been upgraded through the initiative, meaning thousands of Kiwis are now safer on the water.

This is a number Old4New community ambassador Sue Tucker is keen to increase over the 2019-2020 summer season.

“We continue to see lifejackets in all shapes and sizes, some even 50-years-old, and what a lot of them have in common is that in an emergency they won’t keep you safe.”

Sue says they need to be out in the community reminding Kiwis that lifejackets don’t last a lifetime.

Garin College dux Megan Ritchie has already mastered the art of balancing work and fun.

It’s a wonder how the 17-year-old found time to win the school’s top academic prize in between her time as head student, Christian service captain, leading the justice and ministry team, debating, theatre sports, dance and piano.

Megan says her intention at the start of 2019 was to enjoy her final year at school and focus on her extracurricular activities.

“I wanted to have a fun time and make the most of it.”

This included organising charity drives, which saw her raise almost $5000 for children in South Sudan.

She also took part in the regional debating championships, as

well as the school’s Shakespeare production.

Megan sat six subjects this year, including religious studies, English, calculus, drama, geography and economics.

She topped off her successes with an NCEA level one with two and three excellence endorsements.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting it, I just went about my year at school and the outcome was getting dux.”

Megan plans to go to Victoria University next year to study law and political science.

“I’m not sure I want to be a politician or a lawyer, I’ll just see how I go.”

She credits her “amazing” teachers at Garin for helping her succeed.

Megan says to any aspiring duxes out there to not neglect the social aspects of high school.

“Keep on top of your work but make sure you still have fun, the experiences and memories are the things that will stick with you.”

Nelson Matters My 2019 began with the launch of Matthew’s Petition in Appleby last New Year seeking the introduction of random roadside drug testing to make our roads safer. It could not have ended better with the Government announcing on the last day of Parliament their agreement to introduce this measure after dismissing it all year.

23 year old Matthew Dow was killed in a horrible New Year’s Eve crash by Golden Bay woman Alicia Fulcher who was high on meth and cannabis, driving like a maniac and passing recklessly.

Nelson’s emergency services described the Appleby crash as the worst they had ever seen.

The road toll from drug impaired drivers has escalated from 14 in 2014, 27 in 2015, 54 in 2016 and Matthew Dow was the 79th in 2017. There was another 95 in 2018. These numbers now exceed drunk driving.

However 16,000 people were prosecuted for drunk driving as compared to only 200 for drugged driving. The current drug impairment test is unworkable and impractical. Drug users know they face little chance of being prosecuted.

I am in awe of Mathew’s mum, Karen Dow, who has led the campaign with me on random roadside drug testing this year.

I thank the over 6,000 Nelso-

nians who signed our petition.

We were joined by the Waverley community in June after their horrific seven person fatality crash caused by a drugged driver.

Police and the Transport Ministry recommended new laws enabling saliva testing for drugs to Road Safety Minister Genter over two years ago. The Green Party Minister rejected the advice saying saliva testing is too intrusive and a breach of the Bill of Rights. She questioned the risks posed by recreational drug use incorrectly claiming prescription drugs were a greater risk. She also questioned the accuracy of testing.

ry the Green Party has a dangerous blind spot on the problems caused by recreational drug use.

Australia, Canada and the UK have all successfully introduced random roadside drug testing.

We heard the same opposition when National introduced random roadside alcohol testing in 1993. It was successful in halving drunk driving fatalities.

I tried three times this year to introduce a Bill to introduce random drug testing. Speaker Trevor Mallard took the extreme step of blocking me in May and when I objected, he named me.

This is the most serious punishment an MP can receive and has not been used in a decade. I again

sought leave for a Bill to be introduced on Parliament’s last sitting day on December 18. Ironically, the Government again opposed it but then announced that evening it would do so next year.

Politics is about winning arguments for the better. This measure will save dozens of lives and is even more important with the Government’s push for legalising recreational cannabis. I hope and pray there are not too many fatalities before the Government scheme starts in February 2021.

My job in 2020 will be ensuring the new law is robust and we get the testing in place ASAP. Advert.

Platters are perfect for summer entertaining, so reporter Kate Russell asked three Nelson chefs for their favourite recipes and best tips for how to put together three very different platters for entertaining over the holidays

Kiwi pop sensation Drax Project kick off their five-concert summer tour in Riwaka on 28 December. The four-piece rose to fame after busking on the street. They have been based in LA since releasing their first full album in September, which features the hits ‘Woke up Late’, ‘Toto’ and the Six60 collaboration ‘Catching Feelings’. Reporter Kate Russell talks to bass player Sam about their first show in the region.

Are you looking forward to your Riwaka show?

“We’re excited that Riwaka is the first show on the tour.

We’ve never played in the Nelson or Tasman area.

Personally, I love it there.

I’ve been to Nelson and Abel Tasman a couple of times and it’s such a beautiful place, especially in summer. I’m excited to get back there and play a show. It’s unfortunate as we fly into Nelson on the morning of the show and then fly out the morning after, but I’m personally hoping to come back down to Abel Tasman in the middle of January and just hang out a little bit.

What has your experience in LA been like?

“LA is cool. It’s difficult being away from home and friends and family, but it’s so cool being here and having the opportunity to work with some of the top producers and writers in the world.

And, getting that exposure and getting to learn from them. For us, everything that we do is a learning process, and we’re starting to get a handle of it.

Who are your influences?

“We listen to so much different music. I listen to straight pop stuff like Sam Smith and Ariana Grande - standard top

40 stuff. And, that’s obviously a big influence because writing an amazingly crafted pop song is one of the hardest things in the world. But then I also listen to a lot of dance music, stuff like Jon Hopkins or Disclosure.

I also like metal and rock music. That’s kind of like a past life thing when I was younger.

We all have different things that we listen to and I think that probably influences our sound.

Will you be playing any new music at the show?

“That’s the plan. We love to test our new music and see how people react to it – that’s something that we’ve always done. And it’s quite cool as it does shape the end product. With our song ‘Toto’, we weren’t sure about one section of it, lyrically.

Then we got a message to our Facebook page from somebody who was at one of our shows saying ‘is this song available, I really love these lyrics’ - which were the ones we weren’t sure about, so we thought ‘okay cool, I guess that’s going to stay the same’.

It’s good seeing what sections work and the different vibes from the audiences. It’s a big thing because our live show is what we call our ‘feature’ – that’s our thing, playing live.”

“Falafels are a great go-to for vegan platters when they are paired with hummus, vegan cheese, crackers, fresh vegetables and fruit. Deepfried or crumbed tofu also works well, as does vegan pesto and aioli - which are very easy to make or find these days. Local business The Vegetarian Butcher also does some great products perfect for plant-based platters. Nelson is brimming with great produce at this time of year too - especially berries and cherries.”

250g dried chickpeas soaked overnight in cold water 4 cloves crushed garlic 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon tahini 3 tablespoons ground cumin 3 tablespoons ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground chili 4 spring onions, finely chopped ½ cup parsley, finely chopped ½ cup coriander, finely chopped Drain chickpeas and process in food processor with garlic, tahini and lemon juice until finely blended. Add fresh herbs, ground coriander and cumin and blitz again. Season well with flakey salt and cracked black pepper. Shape mixture into falafels, refrigerate and fry in a preheated deep fryer until golden.

“Base your platter around what is fresh and seasonal, head to the market, eat from the garden or catch your own fish.

You can’t have a great platter without bread - have a go at baking your own and if it doesn’t turn out perfect, slice it up and toast it - no one will know the difference. Brush with olive oil and sea salt and toast over your BBQ grill. Don’t be afraid to make your own pickles, chutneys and dips with what’s available.

The shelf life of these preserves will last you all summer and will go a long way when putting together your platter.”

2 fresh fish fillets (use a firmer fish for ceviche) Juice of 1 lemon Juice of ½ lime Thinly sliced capsicum and red onion Chopped coriander 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 teaspoon canola oil Sea salt and pepper Dice fish fillets and sprinkle with sea salt, let it cure for one minute and then add your lemon and lime juice to your bowl. Avoid using a metal mixing bowl when using citrus.

Allow the citrus and fish to cure for another minute. Next, add your capsicum, onion, oil and pepper to the bowl and toss together. Serve straight away – you will be surprised

“The key to any good platter is to make sure there are quality cheeses.

Everything else accompanies the cheeses so you’ve got to make sure those are good. We use Food Snob cheeses on all our platters because the quality is great. We make all our relish and hummus from scratch and this beetroot hummus is perfect for any platter.”

1 small beetroot 1 can chickpeas 1 large lemon (zested) ½ large lemon (juiced) 1 healthy pinch of salt and black pepper 2 large cloves garlic (minced) 2 heaping tablespoons tahini ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil Chili to taste First, roast the beetroot so it holds its colour. Cook the chickpeas in a vegetarian stock to add flavour then blend all the ingredients together.

Add more oil to get the required texture.

PIGEON VALLEY FIRE: February 5 was a day many of us will never forget. It was shortly after 2pm when a fire broke out in Pigeon Valley.

Spreading quickly due to dry conditions and strong winds, hundreds of fire fighters battled the out-of-control blaze for just under one month.

There was a state of emergency in place for 21 days and with 22 helicopters involved, it is New Zealand’s largest aerial firefight on record. The fire caused 3,000 people to evacuate their homes and destroyed one house.

SPOTLIGHT ON VIOLENCE: In June, Nelson Weekly launched a series called Owning our Violence to explore the rising problem of alcohol-fueled violence in our city.

We talked to the clinical director of the Nelson Hospital ED department, a Nelson Senior Sergeant, a Bridge St bar worker, a judge and Nelson Marlborough Health’s alcohol health promotion service about what initiatives are being put in place to target the problem.

HORROR ON OUR ROADS: There were nine deaths on Nelson/Marlborough roads in 2019 including three drivers, five motorcyclists and one cyclist. A ‘horror spell’ on the region’s roads over September/October saw four drivers dead and one critically injured.

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS: Rachel Reese was voted in for her third term as Nelson’s mayor in October, collecting 5020 votes ahead of Mel Courtney on 3694 votes, and Bill Dahlberg on 3385 votes. The city also welcomed six new councillors, including Rachel Sanson, Judene Edgar, Yvonne Bowater, Trudie

CHANGES AT NATURELAND: Director Meg Rutledge stepped down as the zoo’s director in March with Grant Abel taking over. Meg’s resignation came as the zoo struggled with funding as the council announced it would be sticking to only offering $170k in annual funding. Fresh hopes came in May with the announcement that a Thames butterfly forest could step in to run it. In September, new manager Stephen Standley was appointed. He says they are now in the process of developing a “master plan” for the zoo.

Fish company changing with times Charles Anderson When you go and pick up your next fish dinner from Guyton’s you might notice something a bit different in its packaging.

A year ago, the team, led by general manager Aaron Fleming, decided they wanted to move away from putting customers’ fish inside plastic bags.

“We were all just plastic,” says compliance manager Jenna Hart.

“But we knew it was on the out, so we started looking at different options.”

They tested out several variations, including using a biodegradable latex. But finally, they settled on a grease-proof paper that uses a glue made of vegetable polymer. Now they are available in its shops in Wakefield Quay, Richmond and Blenheim.

“The response has been great,” says Jenna. “It’s a cleaner, tidier look and it keeps the fish better than plastic.”

She says that plastic bags can cause

fish to sweat and smell. Customers are reporting a much better experience with the new move.

They have also transitioned to creating totally biodegradable burley bombs that use the biodegradable latex they initially tried with their fish packaging. The creation process is more labour intensive but now they cannot keep up with demand.

“The whole thing can break down.

The idea is that you don’t leave it in the ocean but if you lose it, it will break down.”

Jenna thinks Guyton’s may be the only fish company in the country with such a product.

“We are a company that sells over a ton of fish each day and we are not using a single piece of plastic. It can be done, there is no reason why any other fish company can’t do it.

“It’s the right way to go, and the only way to go, if we want to keep selling fish.”

Nelson’s big year in sport

It’s been a huge year of sport in the region. Reporter Jonty Dine takes a look back at some of the highlights.

Waimea and Marist’s epic rivalry The Nelson club rugby scene produced some thrilling action this year, none more so than when Waimea and Marist went to war, ending in stalemate all three times. The sides were unable to be separated during their first-round robin encounter, before needing extra-time again in both the subunion and Tasman trophy finals.

The unprecedented results saw each club claim a title with Marist prevailing 32-29 in the Tasman Trophy and Waimea 25-23 in the Sub-union.

League comp folds Nelson rugby league has fallen into crisis with no local competition taking place in 2019 due to lack of player numbers.

Signs looked positive at the start of the year with the introduction of the Stoke Raiders, but the call was made to cancel the competition after the Raiders defaulted for a second consecutive week. The league was initially set

The Nelson man has dedicated 70 years of service to athletics in various capacities and was given a Halberg Lifetime Achievement Award.

The German flanker was awarded the 2019 UC Championship MVP award for the second consecutive year and was also named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools side.

Underwater hockey stars crowned world champs Greta Clark and fellow Nelson College for Girls student Naomi Anderson were members of the New Zealand U19 team which won the world championships in Sheffield in August. The team went unbeaten throughout the three week tournament, culminating with a close 3-2 win over Columbia. New Zealand were largely unchallenged until meeting the South Americans, defeating South Africa 170, France 16-0 and the hosts 14-0 in pool play. To cap a stellar campaign, captain Greta was named best player at the tournament.

Stoke/Nayland’s dynasty Stoke/Nayland completed consecutive clean sweeps of the Nelson cricket competitions in 2019. The side went back-to-back, winning the Tasman Premier League for the second year running in a low-scoring final at Horton Park, beating top qualifiers Marlborough Labour Hire Dolphins by 33 runs. Gold croquet champs come to Nelson Jonty Dine Reporter

The greatest golf croquet players on the planet will be descending on Nelson early next year for the sport’s world team championship.

The Nelson Hinemoa Croquet Club will host tier one of the championships from January 6-12, with the top eight world teams competing for the crown.

Australia, Egypt, England, Ireland, South Africa, Sweden, USA and New Zealand will go head to head over seven days of play.

Among the players will be USA captain and world number one, Ben Rothman.

Ben says, after a lot of hardfought victories at the world championships, his side will go into the event ranked third.

“I am confident that we will earn a spot in the semi-finals and we will do our best to bring home the Openshaw Shield.”

He says they are relishing the prospect of playing in Nelson.

“It is exciting to get to play croquet in a new venue and I think it is a great opportunity to explore the city, we’re really looking forward to it.”

National women’s champion and Nelson Hinemoa Croquet Club member Ellie Ross says it’s a huge opportunity for Nelson and the club.

“It will be great for other people coming to Nelson to have a look at the lawns, see how they play and, of course, bring people from all different countries together.”

Ellie is thrilled at the prospect of seeing some of the world’s best players in her own backyard.

“I can’t wait to watch these amazing players compete for one the biggest titles in golf croquet.”

The 17-year-old is confident the Kiwis will provide stiff competition.

“We have got some of top players in the world and I think they will do well.”

Ellie is hopeful that she will be playing in the next world championships.

“I hope I have a shot.”

For the 2010 edition, however, New Zealand will be represented by U21 world champion Edmund Fordyce, national champion Duncan Dixon and former junior world champions Felix Webby and Josh Freeth.

Sevens: Tasman’s own Tone Ng Shiu has been named the New Zealand men’s sevens player of the year. The 25-year-old won the Richard Crawshaw Memorial Trophy for Sevens Player of the Year at this month’s ASB Rugby Awards.

The All Blacks Sevens opened the World Series as runners-up in Dubai before beating the Blitzboks in Cape Town last weekend. New Zealand and South Africa both have 41 points after two rounds, with the All Blacks Sevens sitting top on points difference.

With the Blackcaps currently undertaking the toughest task in cricket - playing tests in Australia, local fans will have the chance to make history of their own.

The eighth annual Great Backyard Cricket Tournament gets underway on Friday at The Playhouse.

“World famous in Mapua,” the annual event sees everyone from 8 to 80-yearsold among the action.

Playhouse owner Nic Roland says the event is continuing to grow in popularity.

“We normally get between six to 10 teams on the day, plus spectators. Around 60 people hang out in the backyard cricket area.”

Nic says there will be a bunch of small prizes up for grabs ranging from hats to cricket sets, however, most people come along for the fun rather than the prizes.

Rowing: Having taken out sportswoman of the year at the Nelson Sports Awards, Nelson rower Zoe McBride is now setting her sights on a coveted Halberg. Zoe and her lightweight women’s double sculls teammate, Jackie Kiddle, are up for team of the year at New Zealand’s preeminent sporting awards. The 24-year-old was nominated on the back of winning two world cup gold medals and gold in the world rowing champs in Austria earlier this year.

“It’s a super fun day for all ages. We will often have grandparents playing on the same team as grandchildren.”

He says the last two years have been won by a family team from Christchurch who stay at the Mapua holiday park.

“This year we decided to hold the event on the 27th rather than the traditional 26th as we didn’t want to clash with the Black Caps.”

Nic says there will be lots of local rules, which will all be spelled out on the day.

“No experience needed, just a desire for a great day out on The Playhouse’s famous custombuilt backyard cricket pitch.”

Cricket: The Central Stags are looking to go back to back in the Super Smash this summer and made an emphatic start to its campaign.

The defending men’s national champions blasted 221/5 against the Knights in the season opener earlier this month, the Stags’ third highest at McLean Park in all T20s. With 17 sixes in the Stags’ innings — three of which went onto or over the roof of the stands, the Stags produced an explosive start after captain Tom Bruce won the toss and batted on a balmy Hawke’s Bay evening.

Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year.

“I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.”

Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys.
