Nelson’s real estate market has had a record-breaking spring but analysis conducted by the Nelson Weekly shows that despite more agencies than ever selling homes,

it’s still a few scoring the bulk of listings.

With Nelson city reaching a record high median house price of $610,000, compared to $523,000 in November last year we looked at which agencies were most

trusted to help homeowners sell.

The price jump also coincides with an increase in properties sold in the $750,000 to $999,999 price range. Houses sold in this bracket doubled, going from 10.3 per cent in November 2018 to

20.7 per cent in the same month this year, according to REINZ data.

There are 23 registered real estate companies operating in the Nelson/Tasman region, according to REINZ, the county’s

real estate watchdog.

Analysis of TradeMe data for a three week period in early November show that of those, 17 companies had 131 listings.

Some companies will charge less once a house sale goes over a certain price, often around the $700,000 mark.

Summit Real Estate managing director Allister Nalder says the record house prices come as no surprise and puts it down to record low mortgage rates, along with legislation that requires houses to be improved for tenants.

While Summit has the most listings and is the largest local real estate company, Allister also says he hopes for a more stable real estate market.

She says part of the motivation was to be more flexible and to allow her to give back more to the community, such as volunteering a day at Nelson Tasman Hospice for every 10 sales they do.

However, she isn’t surprised at the house price trend.

“I don’t know when it is going to stop. Surely it has to even out at some stage.”

Kat remembers when she first started in the industry and a twobedroom unit in the city would cost $150,000. Now it was closer to $500,000.

“It’s a little bit crazy, I don’t know when it is going to stop.”

Report reveals why helicopter pilot fighting fires lost control Tracy Neal of RNZ A preliminary safety report has found that a monsoon bucket hitting the tail rotor of a helicopter was the likely reason a pilot almost lost control of the aircraft while fighting the Tasman fires.

Experienced Nelson helicopter pilot Bill Reid was injured after the helicopter suffered what was described as a hard landing while helping to fight the February wildfires.

A preliminary report issued by The New Zealand Helicopter Association and the Civil Aviation Authority said the helicopter was engaged in firefighting duties when the pilot noticed a sudden yaw to the left followed by another to the right. This was followed by a sudden pitch up.

The pilot immediately jettisoned the monsoon bucket, and while he had little directional control of the aircraft, he was able to control the rate of descent down to the ground.

An investigation found the most likely scenario was that the top ring through which the monsoon bucket was attached to the helicopter, partially collapsed.

The report said this effectively turned the bucket into a sack, and once the water was released and the helicopter gained forward speed, the bucket

The report states: “It is probable that the top ring in the bucket partially collapsed when the PIC (pilot in command) was on his last dip fill, essentially turning the bucket into a sack without the rigid top ring in place.

“Once the pilot released the water from the bucket and gained forward speed while travelling back down the valley the bucket would have experienced significant aerodynamic drag which moved it upward into the tail boom and tail rotor.”

The bucket was a Cloudburst CB1000MF, which the investigation highlighted a possible risk factor when operating the older style of its type, with a collapsible top ring that was secured by Velcro.

“Partial collapse of the ring, or if the ring comes away from the Velcro, could cause an empty bucket to ‘fly’ erratically in flight and move dangerously close to the tail,” the report said.

It said the operator had contacted the manufacturer.

Reid said he would prefer to comment once the official Transport Accident Investigation Commission report was released.

Underpass cost doubles Staff Reporter

Nelson City Council will have to pay more than double what it originally budgeted for an underpass that will preserve the Railway Reserve as a new road is built from Princes Drive to Waimea Rd. Last month, the council was told it would need to pay $84,000 but that has now shot up to $244,000.

The underpass was made necessary by the new road connecting the $125 million Coastal Views Lifestyle Village

development to Waimea Rd. Council group manager of infrastructure Alev Louverdis said the initial estimate was based off a consultant’s information, however, a new cost was created from contractors who were already working on the site.

Councillor Brian McGurk, chair of the infrastructure committee, said he was “disappointed” with the situation.

“Circumstances forced us to act very, very quickly and that has jacked up the price in this contracting market.”

Council transport manager Marg Parfitt has said the council was paying for the underpass to “preserve the future arterial corridor”, formerly known as the Southern Link.

Councillor Matt Lawrey called the move a “self-inflicted wound” to aid a road that would do “irreparable damage” to the Railway Reserve.

“It is a really bad step for Nelson and the reason we’re doing it is to protect a road that will probably never be built [the Southern Link].”

Plans to house Nelson’s homeless Kate Russell

Every day, more than 20 homeless men come into The Male Room seeking help.

Although they can offer some guidance and support for males in the region, director Philip Chapman says it’s not enough to help the homeless.

“We haven’t got a shower - we don’t have all the facilities. What we desperately need in Nelson is a day shelter.”

To solve the problem, Philip has teamed up with other agencies including Te Piki Oranga and Gateway Housing Trust, under the leadership of The Salvation Army to introduce Housing First Nelson Tasman.

Launched on Friday at Pioneer Park, the Government-funded programme aims to house and support homeless people with multiple, high and complex needs.

It is an expansion of the nationwide programme administered by The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development with Nelson Tasman being identified as an area of need.

The launch was attended by representatives from The Salvation Army, Nelson city councillors, representatives from Government, as well as members from the homeless community - including Tama

Manuel, who Philip says has been a long-term visitor to The Male Room.

Tama has been calling his tent home for the past five years before being “in and out” of Franklyn Village for 19 years after his relationship broke down and he “hit the booze”.

He says the only good thing about living on the streets is “getting to see his mates” and it’s not just men - there are plenty of women struggling too.

Tama has started going to church and says he’d like a house and job. He’s staying with a friend for Christmas, but then it will be back to his tent.

Nelson Salvation Army Captain Kenneth Walker says that homelessness is a “complex and growing problem” and estimates that there are 70 homeless in the area at any one time.

However, Housing First is a targeted service to the long-term homeless that seeks to provide accommodation first - regardless of any other help that might be sought.

“Having a stable home with support from The Salvation Army is the first step in getting them back on their feet,” says Kenneth.

“Because of the high cost of renting a house here - that’s assuming you can find one - combined with hardship associated with addiction or mental health, there is a growing homeless population in Nelson.”

After four months of sleepless nights out of fear she would be homeless, Rebekah Smith can now rest easy in her Bishopdale unit for as long as she needs.

It has been a stressful time for the disabled Nelson woman who was facing the prospect of losing her home after her landlord opted to sell.

Unable to purchase the house, Rebekah embarked on a seemingly futile mission to find a suitable home.

“My landlord was very supportive, but I just couldn’t come up with the finances.”

She spent the next few months searching for a wheelchair accessible home but says there was just “nothing out there”.

“Doors kept shutting.”

Rebekah then turned to fundraising after being unable to secure a loan.

“Banks don’t want to loan to a disabled person because it’s easier than making them homeless if they can’t make payments.”

But just as Rebekah had lost all

hope, her saviours came in the form of Habitat for Humanity.

The charity purchased the house for Rebekah just hours before the sale deadline.

“It was incredible,” she says.

Habitat for Humanity are also making modifications to make the home even more liveable for Rebekah.

“I have had an amazing group of people who supported me.”

Rebekah’s plight was first highlighted by the Nelson Weekly in October.

Rebekah uses a wheelchair after living with Multiple Sclerosis for many years.

She managed to kick the disease into remission thanks to stem cell therapy, but its aftereffects were lingering.

Neurological damage to her spine means she cannot bear any weight on her legs.

She says the security of tenure feels amazing.

“I can dream again and not worry about it being taken away from me.”

Rebekah says she is very settled in her home and is not going anywhere.

“I love Nelson, it’s where I want to stay and now I can.”

Mary Sandlant and her granddaughter Rebecca Sandlant marked Mary’s 100th birthday with a party at Summerset in the Sun retirement village.

Mary celebrates her 100 years Mary Sandlant turned 100 a year earlier than she ever thought she would.

A few years ago, she was looking through some old family documents and stumbled across her birth certificate.

It told her that she is actually a year older so her ‘98th’ year only lasted a few weeks. It also told her that her birthday was not December 12, like she had been celebrating, but actually on December 13.

So last Friday, friends and family gathered at Summerset in the Sun in Stoke and joined in marking Mary’s 100th year.

She was born in Poverty Bay and moved with her husband to Nelson

in 1970. Now she has three children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

As for words of wisdom after 100 years, Mary had this to say: “Learn to be tolerant. I think there is so much ill going on around, you have to look on the bright side.”

Mary is an optimist – even managing to get herself out of hospital after puncturing a lung only a couple of weeks earlier. But she still worries about the future.

“I have four beautiful great grandchildren and I wonder what the world will be like for them.”

However, on Friday there was no cause for concern as she was surrounded by love from her friends and family.

The new ‘Founders Bridge’ at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary was lifted into place last week. The $140,000 footbridge was fabricated from steel off-site and was put in by Scott Construction over the top of the front dam. It marks the completion of the Lower Valley Loop Track project, which has been three years in the making. Chief executive Ru Collin says the project is a big coup for the sanctuary. “The funds we’ve attracted for the footbridge have been substantial. We’re really pleased that we’ve got good support and our volunteers are helping where they can.” Ru says they are hoping to have the project wrapped up before Christmas and it will be officially opened for the public to enjoy in mid-February after getting council sign off. “In terms of visitor experience, what we’re trying to do is make the sanctuary visit more enjoyable.” Photo: Supplied.

‘Extra, extra’ – Tommy finds the scoops in Stoke Jonty Dine Reporter

The Nelson Weekly has some fresh competition in the form of junior journo Tommy Burchell’s start-up community news publication in Stoke.

The eight-year-old Nayland Primary student has always had a fascination with news and is getting a jump on his career as the editor of his monthly newsletter ‘The Morning News’.

Tommy covers everything from sport to movie reviews and even creates his own comics.

“I want to be a journalist when I grow up.”

He delivers his newsletter to the houses on his street, his teachers and to the shops in Stoke.

“They really like it.”

It’s becoming so popular that the young newshound is already getting commissions for work.

The Pantry Door have agreed to give him a free ice-cream in exchange for an advert in the next copy of The Morning News.

He says he has a range of sources for

stories.

“Sometimes I hear about it, sometimes I see it in adverts. If I like the shop, I will put it in my news.”

Tommy says it takes him about two to three days to complete an edition.

“He gives himself a deadline and stresses trying to get it all done,” says his dad Keith.

The chief editor has already learned the harsh lesson of missing a deadline.

“It was the second issue, I used the wrong paper so it couldn’t be photocopied. By the time I got it done it was past the morning, so I just changed it to September 1st.”

Tommy dreams of being a newspaper reporter covering the breaking news in Nelson.

Keith says the newsletter is gaining plenty of attention in Stoke.

“It’s all his own work. He has complete editorial control. He decides what goes in, the format, the typesetting, pictures, everything and I think it’s just going to get better.”

Keep an eye out for The Morning News’ Christmas edition, due out in January.

Mall Chat Only 7 sleeps to Christmas!

An increase of Nelson families needing help this Christmas has resulted in the creation of 400 goodie bags for ‘The Big Give’ appeal.

The Fifeshire Foundation are now in their eighth year of organising the fundraiser and manager Leanne Churchill says they’ve seen more need than ever this festive season.

“We only aimed for 300 bags this year, but the number kept climbing. It’s more than we’ve ever done. Last year we only did 270.”

And she says it’s not just the homeless and unemployed that are reaching out for help - it’s the working poor.

“The cost of housing is really putting the pressure on families.

People are putting more than 50 per cent of their income towards rent, so even those in employment are living in poverty.”

“There are grandparents raising grandchildren who need help and then there have been a lot of late ‘help, I’m in dire need - something just happened today’ requests.”

Luckily, they’ve had no problems filling the bags thanks to the generosity of the public along with local schools and businesses.

“We actually achieved it really

easily. I reached out to more agencies. We had Knapps Lawyers coordinate law firms around the region to rally donations and we got carload after carload of them.”

Recipients are referred from social agencies and the bags are personalised for each family.

Leanne says there is more need for food items this year, so each bag includes a breakfast item, a dinner meal, Christmas treats,

some staples such a canned food and a $50 grocery voucher.

Then there are age appropriate new toys and gifts for children, while teenagers get vouchers.

She says “new” is a luxury for many people so it’s nice to be able to provide some “Christmas cheer” to those who need it.

“It’s a huge year, there are just so many families in hardship needing additional support.”

Sessions are daily: 10am – 12, 12-30 – 2-30pm, 3-5pm and 5-7pm on late nights.

Comfort in night sky Locally Owned and Operated

In the winter evenings, Naomi Arnold would take her dog out the back of their Nelson home to put out the compost.

She would then look up at the sky and find comfort.

The journalist and writer was working on three books at the time – one about the Nelson Tasman Hospice, one about anxiety and one about New Zealand’s southern sky. It was a stressful collision of projects, spanning life and death and mental health, but she found herself looking up at the sky and watching the flow of the universe.

While working on Southern Nights, she had a newfound appreciation of the stars above us and our place within it all. She would watch the constellation Scorpius rise and fall through those months and gain some new perspective on life.

“It was having this sense that the planet is tilting and turning, and time is passing, and we are just on this rocky planet hurtling through space. It was comforting that

everything will keep on going without us and also that we are all connected under this same ceiling. That is the only thing that doesn’t change.”

Southern Nights is the result of what Naomi describes as one of the most challenging projects of her career. She is not a scientist, or an astronomer.

When she began the book, she hardly knew anything about our constellations. But the more she researched the more excited she was.

“I just started reading all the books in the library and learned all about New Zealand’s astronomical history.”

The result is likely the most comprehensive book about our night sky – blending science, history and culture into a definitive read that celebrates eclipses, aurorae, comets and constellations, backyard observatories, traditional stargazers and world-class astrophotographers.

“We are positioned in a really interesting and important place for all the global monitoring systems around the world,” she says. “There is nothing here other than us.”

Even now, Naomi says the amount of people that don’t have an appreciation for our night sky is a shame – especially as light pollution means many people never get to see what it actually looks like.

“We don’t realise what we aren’t seeing, so we don’t value it.”

Naomi says that the project was “so hard” and remembers

how she spent a whole day just trying to calculate the universe in terms of Auckland’s Skytower. Her job was to make astronomy undertakable for a general audience.

Now that the Harper Collinspublished book is out before Christmas, Naomi says her nights will no longer be used to map the revolving of the universe. Instead she will put the darkness towards some more productive use … sleeping.

Your Voice Nelson nurses ‘burnt out’ Hardly surprising that there is a nursing shortage. My partner has over 40 years registered nursing experience, 25 of which are in ED with 15 years as an ED sister running a very busy UK A&E department.

She was registered in New Zealand and applied several times for casual nursing posts at Nelson ED, on one occasion 10 vacancies were advertised for experienced staff, and she didn't even get an interview, until she asked why, so then they asked her for an interview, and turned her down!

Every year it has cost approximately $200 to keep her registration in the hope of working part time, however now, she has given up. When visiting Christchurch ED, they offered her any hours, any time starting ASAP! Maybe Nelson Hospital’s HR department needs to be revised?

There have been days where I don’t think I would have coped as well as I have without them in my corner. They are extremely undervalued. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all so much for everything.

There are staff at every level (admin, nurses, doctors, physios, etc) taking stress leave or resigning due to workload, hours, patient safety issues... not enough beds, not enough theatres, not enough consultants or clinic spots, not enough time to fit in all the patients requiring treatment... front line staff go above and beyond for the patients and get shafted by the suits in the rafters.

Catherine Barker Having recently been an inpatient for a couple of nights, I could not believe how hard the staff worked.

They never stopped working, running their whole shift. My heart went out to them completely. Total respect for these people that went above and beyond and never complained. But the reality is that this can’t continue.

There are staff on multiple levels that make our encounters with the hospital happen and they are all unsung heroes in my opinion.

I can do nothing more than compliment my stay at Nelson Hospital but I’m also aware that by doing this would insinuate that the conditions that the staff are working in is okay, and it’s not.

I’ve been there and done that and say you are all totally amazing.

Labour’s first decision in health was to cancel specific targets on things like immunisation rates, elective surgery numbers and waiting times in emergency departments. These were publicly reported quarterly by each DHB. They showed how each was doing and ranked its performance relative to the other 20 DHBs. It was a mistake to drop these targets seeing how performance has gone backwards in the past two years. The shocking measles epidemic that subsequently spread to Samoa exposed the tragic consequences of our declining immunisation rates. We have also seen a deterioration in times for patients to be seen at emergency departments. The

proportion of patients seen within six hours at EDs has declined from 93.1% to 84.8%.

The area I am most concerned is elective surgery. I am seeing people in awful pain because of delays in surgery for hips, knees, cataracts and many other procedures.

The numbers of elective procedures completed at our Nelson and Blenheim hospitals has gone from 5,770 in 2017 to 5,397 in 2018 and to only 4,720 in 2019.

That’s 1,000 fewer people getting surgery this year locally under Labour as compared with National.

I do not blame our local DHB, as the numbers have dropped right across New Zealand. The Gov-

Nelson Matters Getting good quality healthcare for Nelson is one of my most important areas of work. It is a difficult area because our population is growing and aging. Medical science is constantly developing expensive new treatments and new drugs that extend and improve the quality of life. These challenges make health hard but this does not excuse the hash Labour is making.

I am getting inundated with complaints from both patients and health professionals. The problem for patients is mainly about access to elective surgery but also about the quality of service. Doctors’ and nurses’ concerns have been about stress and low morale.

Nelson’s great weed debate: Yes, I support this. Users will still be using whether this is passed or not, so I would rather see it controlled by the Government than by gangs.

Tax taken by Government will then be used for drug education programmes and treatment of addicts rather than going to gangs.

Our DHB has just posted a whopping $20 million deficit.

It ran small surpluses in each of National’s last three years. Nationally they have blown out to over $1 billion. This financial crisis is impacting on staff morale and health services.

Nor are we seeing any improvement in frontline mental health services locally despite major promises and announcements.

The one big area of growth in staff and increased spending has been in Ministry of Health in Wellington where bureaucrats

now number over 1150.

Labour is failing to deliver on health for the same reasons Kiwibuild, Auckland light rail and so many other policies have failed. They did not do the work in Opposition and had no plan for delivery. Good intentions and throwing more money at a problem does not necessarily get better results.

National has just published a Health Discussion Document available from my office or our website. It focuses on front-line services like GPs, elective surgery, cancer care, oral health, disability services and mental health. I welcome feedback on these new ideas.

beers Every few weeks we sit down with someone with a story to tell at Burger Culture. This week we meet 20-yearold Nelson entrepreneur Emma Fryer, who is the brains behind her family business ‘EmGuard’ - which makes environmentally friendly bio-degradable plant guards as an alternative to plastic ones. She tells us how she came up with the idea at the age of just 15 and her family’s reaction to winning the ‘Clever Business Award’ at this year’s Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

“It all started five years ago when I was out working on a job with my dad. My parents own a conservation and ecology business and we were doing some planting - restoring a wetland next to a creek. We were putting up these plastic guards and I was like ‘we’ve just spent all this time trying to restore this area, why are we putting plastic in?’ and dad said ‘well, there’s actually nothing else on the market, so why don’t you have a look and see what you can do’.

So, I spent the following two years investigating the idea through the Young Enterprise Scheme with my business studies group at Nelson College for Girls.

We didn’t get very far, because no one had done it and I did struggle being a young high school student.

Then it was my mum who found a product called Ram Board which is used for protecting flooring on building sites. We thought it would be perfect, so I sat down and cut out 34 with my craft knife and installed them up the Maitai. They did well, but

when we investigated the cost it was ridiculously expensive and not viable.

Dad got on the internet and searched for similar products and we found a packaging company who import a type of specialised board - which is like a laminated cardboard with four layers and a water resistant like wax on it. We were sent a sample and it took off from there.

We did our first trial. We had to get 5000 to start off with - which is a lot.

We took the risk and we’re so glad we did. In that first year we only developed them for us to use, but people were so interested in them and we ended up getting big orders before we even completed our first trial year. Now we sell them from Kaitaia to Bluff and we’ve just started exporting to Australia.

People love using them because they’re so simple to use. They are easy to move, reasonably light, use a single stake and are flat pack. We guarantee they’ll last a year, but it’s dependent on where you put them. They’ll breakdown

It was very exciting to win the Clever Business Award. It was five years in the making and it’s surreal to have the idea grow into what it is now. People have said ‘that’s so simple, why didn’t I think of that’?

Sometimes I don’t think people realise the work that has gone into it, and how much we did behind

the scenes. It’s a family story - no one person was a bigger part.

I’m now doing my Bachelor of Commerce at NMIT and working full time for the company and enjoy doing all the marketing and trade shows. I definitely see myself gaining some experience elsewhere in the next few years, but it’s something that I’m always going to be passionate about.”

- OPERATIONS CO-ORDINATOR: Hi everyone I’m Mark French

ABOUT ME I’m a local Tahunanui resident and business owner living and working in this beautiful beachside community. My family has been living in Muritai St for the past 12 years. Our three boys who are young adults now, went to Tahunanui School.

My claim to fame and what I’m most well known for is my involvement with the Nelson ‘Touch Module’ having managed it for five years and was there in the beginning as a player and referee over 30 years ago. My wife Ruth and I even had our first flat together located across the road from the Mobil station.

These days I like to get down to the beach as often as I can to pursue my latest passion, Stand Up Paddle Boarding. I feel that one of the reasons I’ve got this role is because I’m very familiar and connected with the community and area.

WHAT DO I DO? I am responsible for the day to day running of the Hub and together with a small team we have managed to keep this place running, on target and within budget.

On the combined budget of one person we have delivered so much to the community and believe there is a lot more room for future growth.

Our Hub front team consists of 2 admin professionals Vicki and Deryn (soon to be leaving us) who share their roles on alternate days and Elle who is a 3rd Year NMIT Student.

Between them, the processes they have created has streamlined admin, venue bookings and venue user experience which has made this area very efficient and cost effective.

WHAT HAS CHANGED? Within building - Relocated the whole back office to the front reception area and created a Wellness space where the previous office staff were located.

The admin team and I are located in the former reception area to create a better connect with

users and visitors to the Hub. We now have a very nice, large, private and safe Wellness space for the Community Nurse, AOD Councillor and Cervical Screening.

The public computer is located here also. This space provides a better connection to reception than the previous set up.

The Boardroom is also used for overflow of services especially when the Wellness space is not available.

E.g Quit Smoking, B4 School Checks and Budget Service.

The future vision for the Boardroom is to create an education/training Hub and a space that will be available to organisations and businesses.

COLLABORATING We have spent a lot of time engaging, collaborating, sharing resources and ideas with other organisations. This has allowed us to provide services at minimal cost to the Hub and avoiding duplication.

We gratefully thank and appreciate those organisations that we have engaged with on a regular basis – Victory Community Centre, Nelson Budget Services, Age Concern, Neighbourhood Support Nelson, Kai with Love, Kai Rescue (Nelson Environment Centre), Helping Families, St Stephens Church, Fresh As Bakery, Volunteer Nelson, Tahunanui School, Nelson Weekly, NCC, NBPH, NMH. A great example of sharing resources is with the Victory Community Centre who currently share a Community Nurse, AOD Councillor, B4 Checks Nurse and Quit Smoking Coach.

KAI RESCUE The reason I ended up here in the first place, was to ensure we had food available to those who needed it most in our community This has gone from one day a week on a Monday to two dedicated days including Wednesday. Keep an eye on our Facebook page, where we will notify the public when we have extra food and our next Fish giveaway.

Please note that over Christmas our Hub and Kai rescue will be closed. However we have made the commitment have arranged to collect food for the community and have it available the Mondays and Friday over the 2 week break.

Elle and I have started to put together a business plan for 2020 focused on what a typical Community Centre should provide and looking at providing services unique to the Tahunanui Community To our supporters, collaborators, future collaborators, sponsors and volunteers - from the Tahunanui Community Hub team and Board we wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Cervical Screening Clinic THE CERVICAL SCREENING CLINICS ARE BEING SET UP IN THE COMMUNITY FOR ELIGIBLE WOMEN WHO WOULD LIKE SUPPORT TO GET UP TO DATE WITH THEIR SMEARS. These clinics started on November 18 at the Tahunanui Community Hub from 10:30-1:30pm.

My role is that of Property Administrator here at The Hub. I look after new enquiries and existing bookings for the hall and with a background in Bookkeeping, I am also responsible for all of the invoicing and payments made, as well as keeping our bookings calendar up to date. I enjoy meeting members of

the community on Wednesdays when Kai Rescue is on, and our weekly Community Nurse is here. It’s great seeing how the Hub is making a difference each week. The feedback and comments we have been getting is fantastic and keeps us motivated to continue finding new things we can offer to support our local community. I am also responsible for our ‘What’s On’ weekly flyer which is posted on our Facebook page on a Friday afternoon. This can

Youth engagement is new territory for NSN and we have been delighted at the opportunity granted to us by Nelson City Council to engage with the Tahunanui community, and have been able to work together

Kia Ora Whānau, My name is Sabien and I am available to answer any questions, provide education, and offer 1:1 support to people wanting to make a change with their use of alcohol and/or cannabis.

I offer a free, non-judgemental, confidential, and mobile service.

I am able to meet with you at Tahunanui Community Hub on Tuesdays from 11:00-2:00 (by appointment), at Victory Community Centre, at your GP's office, or at other appropriate settings in the community.

My background is as an occupational therapist.

The first event held at the Hub was a Young Legends Pizza Party where we brainstormed some ideas about possible events and activities for young people in the community. From there we were able to work with Macs Cowley, a local young legend, to put together a Halloween themed Creepy Craft day and Bewitched Baking event, all leading up to our awesome Fright Night celebration held at the Hub. There are plenty of current projects on their way: the Tahunanui Community Gardens will be receiving some colourfully painted wooden stakes and signage thanks to the Tahunanui Kindergarten, the

Hub will have their new Kai Kart and mural painted, NSN will also be working with Youth Nelson on a Christmas baking project where Christmas themed baked goods will be made to put in Kai parcels at Victory and Tahunanui Community Hub for Christmas this year.

Ever since seeing the spectacle that is American Football on TV as a child, Shane Tinetti has been obsessed with the sport.

He was awe-struck by the velocity and brutality of the NFL. “It was just different; the guys were huge, and the contact was intense.”

So, when PlayStation released a gridiron game where he could play as his beloved Greenbay Packers, Shane’s obsession grew.

“I grew up loving sport and playing video games, so once I got a taste for it, I was hooked.”

After attending Nelson College, Shane moved to Australia in 2009 for work.

It was there that he heard on the radio about American Football being played in Queensland.

“I stopped work straight away, jumped on the internet and found the closest club.”

After living his dream and playing in a full-contact gridiron game, Shane went on to play five seasons with the Western Cougars at cornerback, where he was tasked with defending wide receivers.

“I enjoy the challenge; I’ve always been a bit shorter so defence called to me.”

He says he thrives on the contact.

“I love to tackle and enjoy being the underdog.”

When he moved back to Nelson, the 34-year-old longed to get back on the pitch.

“I just missed it, so I made some Facebook groups to try to start something.”

Shane would often find himself alone at Tahuna Fields with a ball but no one to throw to.

However, his efforts soon paid off.

“Eventually, we got about seven regulars and now we have grown to five teams and seventy odd players.”

Along with teammate, Jono Entwistle, Shane founded the Nelson Honey Badgers in 2015.

The club hosts an annual flag football competition known as the ‘HoneyBowl’.

Shane’s career has also seen him represent our national flag football side, but a cruel twist of fate saw him miss playing for the New Zealand gridiron team.

With the Steel Blacks set to play American Samoa in 2016, Shane broke his hand just two weeks out, forcing him out of what would have been his debut.

However, his tenure in the

national set up is far from over.

Shane is now set to take on his next football challenge, swapping the cleats for the clipboard and assuming the role of defensive coach for the New Zealand flag football team.

He will make his coaching debut at the World Championships in Denmark next year.

It was a decision he did not make lightly.

“I wanted to play, but we have a lot of good young players.

It’s going to be hard to stand on the sidelines, but I think I’ll be a better asset to the team that way.”

Not your typical Kiwi, the sports-mad Shane admits he doesn’t even watch the All Blacks anymore.

“I’m a full-on football fan.”

His goal is to now help provide pathways for players that weren’t available to him.

“I’ve had an amazing career

from nothing, but to provide some young kid with the same kind of passion to chase that NFL dream is definitely something I’m passionate about.”

Shane hopes to bring the fullcontact version of the game to the region but says there are serious financial hurdles.

“For the helmet and all the pads, it’s roughly $500 per player.”

He says they are currently looking at creating a limited numbers contact league.

“The cogs are moving in the background, but it’s a slow process.”

He says they are pushing hard to find volunteers and resources to grow the game in Nelson.

“We have a big vision and goal; we aren’t just guys throwing a football around.”

Mako giving back to RDA Locally Owned and Operated

The Tasman Mako are still putting smiles on the community’s faces, weeks after its inaugural premiership title win.

The 2019 Mitre 10 Cup champions have gifted one of its

prized jerseys to Nelson’s Riding for the Disabled to help raise funds for the popular charity.

Tasman Rugby Union marketing manager Les Edwards says, while the Mako usually donate to the rugby community such as clubs and schools, the RDA struck a chord.

“Here are some people in real need of money to look after

the horses and riders needing therapy so we are delighted to be involved.”

The charity helps children and adults, many whom have intellectual or physical disabilities, grow through the experience of riding a horse or pony.

The union gifted a Mako jersey to RDA - complete with the

signatures of the squad, which will be auctioned on TradeMe. “This was the undefeated season so if anyone wants a signed Mako jersey, this is the one to get.”

RDA head coach Pam Harwood says the funds they raise will go toward the purchase of new ponies as demand for their service continues to grow.

“We currently have 53 on our role with more starting next term, it keeps creeping up, so we are also needing more volunteers.”

Pam hopes Mako fans support what she says is a very worthy cause.

“We have a lot of strong rugby fans in Nelson, so we are just hoping they come on board.”

Jeremy Webb returned to Nelson last weekend after a few weeks racing the One New Zealand T.Q. at Western Springs.

He jumped into the 88c Midget and it didn’t take long to find his rhythm, winning heat two before taking out the feature race from defending champion Tom Lumsden.

The duo battled for most of the race, defence was the name of the game for Webb to keep out Lumsden and swap positions from last year’s podium result.

Both Webb and Lumsden are building up towards the New Zealand title at Ruapuna and then the GP back in Nelson.

The Super Saloons made a welcome return to the track away from the Mag and Turbo series.

Abbeyfield Nelson seeks a responsible, caring, and well-organised person to oversee a family style household for 12 older residents at Abbeyfield House, 2 St Francis Way, Stoke.

Main duties for this full time (37.5 hours a week, normally Monday-Friday) live-in position include: · Planning and preparation of two meals a day for 12 older people · Cleaning of house common areas · Helping ensure the harmonious running of the house Applicants will have experience cooking homestyle, nutritious meals, as well as empathy for older people and a cheerful, flexible personality. A self contained flat is provided on the premises at an affordable rental, and meals when on duty. The successful applicant must be available to start in late January 2020.

Abbeyfield Houses provide supported independent living for older people.
