Police urge caution after fatal crashes Sara Hollyman Reporter

A horror spell on the region’s roads has seen three drivers dead and one critically injured over an 18-day-period.
Detective Sergeant Lex Bruning, Nelson road policing, says that any loss of life on the roads is a tragedy. “Sadly, there have been three fatal crashes in the Tasman District within the last month.” The first victim was 40-year-
old Daniel Fish, who died in Wellington Hospital after the car he was driving hit a tree on State Highway 6 in Motupiko on September 19. Eleven days later, on Monday September 30, another person was critically injured after the car they
were driving hit a tree on Eighty Eight Valley Rd in Wakefield. They are still recovering in Wellington Hospital. On October 2, Nelson teenager Cameron Alexander Anderson, died after a single-vehicle crash claimed his life on the
Whangamoa Saddle. The 18-year-old was the only person in the car. On Sunday a third person was killed. He was Christopher David Heads, 69, of Rai Valley.

High-flying Mako on a rampage Tasman Mako’s unprecedented season continued on Sunday as the side recorded its ninth win of the season at Trafalgar Park, the last time Nelson will host the side until a potential final on October 26. Tasman has gone through pool play unbeaten to date with just the Hawke’s Bay Magpies standing in the way of an unbeaten regular season. Tasman already has a guaranteed home semi-final which they will play in Blenheim next weekend. Pictured is winger Jamie Spowart going aerial during the 52-6 demolition of Northland. The 100 km/h speed limit between Blenheim and Nelson is set to be cut to a maximum of 80 km/h. Speed limits between Blenheim and Nelson should be cut to 80km/h or less permanently say road safety bosses. And traffic bosses are backing the switch, recommending that it gets the go ahead. Earlier this year, New Zealand Road Transport Agency revealed plans to look at lowering speed restrictions to help prevent fatalities and injuries on the region’s roads. New restrictions will see State Highway 6 restricted
to 60km/h in some places. NZ Transport Agency director regional relationships Jim Harland confirmed the recommendation to the Nelson Weekly. “After carrying out a safety assessment we are proposing new speed limits along the route. The move follows several public events across the region to get public feedback. Under recommended proposals, existing speeds would change just before the roundabout by Pak ‘n Save, dropping from 100 to 80 km/h for the majority of the 114km journey.

Communities are calling for the change, NZTA bosses say. Between 2009 and 2018, 20 people died and 92 were seriously injured in crashes on State Highway 6 between Blenheim and Nelson. Nineteen of these deaths were on 100km/h stretches of SH6 and 87 people were seriously injured were on the open road/ 100km/ hour sections of SH6. The consultation period will be open for four weeks before a final decision is made. Any changes to the speed limits could be in place by the end of the year, Jim says.

Fears for children amid short-term tenancies Staff Reporter
A Nelson community group are calling on the Labour-led coalition to be a “government with guts” as they say children’s education, mental and physical health are becoming more acutely affected by the housing crisis. Community Action Nelson (CAN) spokesperson Mary Ellen O’Connor says the impact on children’s education is a rising concern, so the group has written to Minister of Housing and Urban Development Megan Woods asking them to be a “government with guts”. “Right now, it’s the time of year when tenants are given notice they have to move, to free up homes for top dollar rentals over the lucrative summer season,” says Mary Ellen. “Agencies are telling us more and more tenancies are only for a six-month period. This means kids who are often already disadvantaged have to keep shifting schools with all the challenges that presents for them and their parents and teachers.” According to the Massey Home Affordability Index to June 2019, Tasman district is the second least affordable region in New Zealand after Auckland, with Nelson in third place.
Free Shipping on online orderS
Mary Ellen says there are numerous factors, alongside tourism, that contributed to Nelson’s high house prices and high rents. “We’ve got ‘sunshine wages’ and seasonal employment, an influx of wealthy retirees and lifestylers, we’re a refugee destination and a student town and we have an historically higher number of ex-psychiatric patients in community accommodation.” Nelson also has a low proportion of state houses, with 734, and councils have very limited involvement in social housing. “This means that 90 per cent of the rentals in Nelson/Tasman are privately owned, so they are almost completely unregulated; and a lot of the stock is not only overpriced, but in very poor condition.” CAN is asking the minister to reconsider three of the Welfare Expert Advisory Group‘s
recommendations regarding housing for this region. • Urgently expand and accelerate Government efforts to substantially increase public housing on an industrial scale and continue urgent efforts to end homelessness. • Increase the capacity of thirdsector, community-based housing providers such as the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. • Subsidise housing costs for people on low incomes (in addition to raising main benefit rates to provide an adequate income) and ensure the combination of changes to housing support and abatement rates make households better off. On the plus side, Mary Ellen says the two local councils had recently put considerable energy into forging the Nelson-Tasman Future Development Strategy.

Slow voting in Nelson Staff Reporter
Election turnout in Nelson is on the go-slow with less than a quarter of the population having voted. With less than a week to go until the voting deadline, Nelson has had a total of 25.60% of voting papers sent out returned, compared to 28.20% in 2016. For the past three elections, about 52 per cent of the voting population of Nelson has returned their votes. Votes must be cast before noon on Saturday, 12 October, in order to be counted. If you haven’t already mailed your vote the only way is by taking completed forms to the Nelson council building or to a Nelson public library. In an effort to inspire people to get out and vote, a “Vote Off ” has been circulating online, started by Queenstown Lakes District Council, which challenges residents of different local authorities to get the highest turnout. Hampden St School students even dedicated one of their news bulletins to the vote off, saying why Nelson was so much better than Queenstown. Results will be tallied on Saturday afternoon, with successful

More Parking at Marina: Nelson City Council are creating additional carparking for the boat ramp at the Nelson Marina. The old boat storage area will see the kerb removed to extend the existing parking. Works began on Monday and is expected to take between 10-14 days depending on the weather.

Trafalgar Bridge to close Staff Reporter The Trafalgar Street Bridge was closed on Sunday for nearly two weeks to allow maintenance work to be carried out. The concrete bridge, which is almost 100 years old, should be coming to the end of its serviceable life but the maintenance work is expected to extend the life by another 30 years at least. A Nelson City Council spokesperson says a detailed
assessment of the bridge structure and condition of the concrete was carried out in May and, although there was a reasonable amount of concrete carbonation, the report concluded that the bridge had a long life ahead of it if the concrete was well looked after and kept dry, particularly the deck. The work will include replacing the road surface, improving drainage, and repairing and waterproofing the concrete deck.
This will mean the bridge will need to be closed to all vehicles until Friday October 18, 2019, with detours in place. Pedestrian access will be possible from Monday 7, October for the duration of the closure. NCC infrastructure group manager Alec Louverdis says concrete structures have a finite lifespan and those built almost a century ago would be expected to close to the end of their life by now.
“The good news is that the Trafalgar Bridge was constructed very well and has been looked after – which means that with a bit of maintenance work we can keep it in good condition and up to the job for at least the next 30 years,” he says. “Improvements in road surfacing and concrete waterproofing technology will allow us to keep this iconic Nelson landmark part of our daily lives for many years to come.”
Hampden St intersection closed: The trial closure of Hampden St (West) at the intersection of Waimea Rd is now in place. The purpose of the trial is to see if the change in road layout improves safety at the intersection. While the trial is set to run for up to 12 months, Nelson City Council has asked for a report after the first six months to review what the monitoring is showing. Feedback regarding any concerns can be logged through Council’s Customer Service Centre on Ph. 03 546 0200 or email enquiry@ncc.govt.nz. To report a near miss, phone 0800 CYCLECRASH.
Sophie’s cleanup: Nelson teenager Sophie Weenink-Smith has made the next step in her mission to save the planet, one waterway at a time. The 13-year-old last week organised a mass clean up of the Maitai River’s banks, which follows on from her Tahunanui Beach clean-up in July. “There’s so much stuff on the banks and when the tide comes in, it all gets swept away, it’s very concerning.” She says she chose the Maitai River because she lives close by. “I just thought that it would be really nice to something for the environment around me and also for Nelson, this river goes all the way down and all the way up so I thought if I could do something then this is it.”

Tahuna back beach dunes eroded after king tide Kate Russell A king tide in Nelson last week has left some dog walkers high and dry at Tahunanui’s back beach, with some of the sand dunes being “significantly” eroded. According to NIWA’s storm-tide alert schedule, Nelson is on “red alert” for high tides between 27 September and 4 October.
Also known as high perigeanspring tides, they peak one or two days after a new or full moon when the moon is in its perigee. NIWA scientist Scott Stephens told Nelson App that last Monday’s mixture of a king tide with strong winds would have caused the erosion at the back beach. “When you get a king tide and
“PIE IN THE SKY” ideas may work...?
BUT
that wind blowing onshore, the waves can attack the dunes at a higher level.” The king tide also caused some low-lying flooding in Monaco and the city centre. Nelson City Council’s group manager of community services, Roger Ball, says they are monitoring the erosion at the back beach closely. “This spring high tides have
caused significant erosion to Tahunanui back beach. To help ensure everyone’s safety, please stay well away from the sand cliffs created by these high tides. “Council will be removing two trees that are at risk of toppling, and will investigate what further actions might be necessary once the high tides have passed.”

A man was pulled from Nelson Haven last week as he attempted to swim away from police. The man was being chased by police on Rocks Rd last Thursday when he pulled his car over, jumped in the water and attempted to swim to Haulashore Island. He didn’t quite make it to the island as he was plucked out of the water by a pilot boat carrying two police officers and brought back to shore at Wakefield Quay. Police say the man failed to stop for police while driving disqualified at around 1.20pm. “He then fled into the water off Rocks Rd before being arrested.” Harbourmaster David Duncan says police requested assistance after the man jumped in the water. “One of our pilot boats was in the water so picked up two officers and then went to get the man out of the water. He was in a bit of a bad way by the sounds of it.”

A church alter may seem like a usual location for a catwalk, but next week’s fundraiser fashion show at Christ Church Cathedral is all for a good cause. ‘Couture at the Cathedral’ will be raising funds for the Nelson Tasman Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust (NRBGCT) next Wednesday. The trust aims to raise money to benefit breast and gynaecological cancer patients and their families throughout the Top of the South. Over the last three years Morrison Square has led the fundraising crusade, raising more than $65,000. Manager Angela Leonard says the funds have gone towards the new breast sentinel node probe for Nelson Hospital, after care treatment education and exercises classes for patients, and providing patients with items that help them remain comfortable while receiving treatments.
“It also offers financial help to patients for things like wigs, travel requirements and home care assistance.” This year, they hope to raise more than $20,000, which will help with continued support for patients and the trust. Angela says they wanted to “go a little bigger” than the previous high teas and movie nights. The fashion show will feature bubbles and canapes on arrival, and guests will be treated to a fashion show featuring retailers from Morrison Square and Shine as well as goodie bags and a charity auction. Angela says the event wouldn’t be possible without key sponsors, including Morrison Square, WildTomato, Bowater Hyundai, Olive Estate, Hamish Fletcher, Bidfood, The Breeze and Life Pharmacy Prices. ‘Couture at the Cathedral’ is on Wednesday 16 October, 6:30 8:30pm at Christ Church Cathedral. Closure of Codgers for pine harvest postponed Staff Reporter
Local paddleboarder Kelly Gill Brydon snapped this shot of a Lions Mane Jellyfish while out in the harbour at Tahunanui on Monday. The jellyfish, although interesting to look at, can deliver a painful sting even after being stranded on shore. Department of Conservation technical adviser marine Andrew Baxter says a combination of things such as calm seas, onshore winds and water temperature can all align to bring them in, but they are ultimately at the mercy of the current. Photo:Kelly Gill Brydon.
EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY
Nelson City Council has decided to defer the harvest of pine trees after concerns were raised over the impact the closure would have on recreation users. The pine tree harvest of the Tantragee and Atmore Reserves, which includes the Codgers recreation area, was planned to begin on October 7 and would continue through to December 20. Council posted notification of the harvest plans on Sunday September 30 but by Wednesday October 3, the decision had been made to defer the project. “The October 7 date that was originally chosen was favourable for a number of reasons, but after listening to feedback from a wide range of recreation groups and commercial operators, we agree that the impact on resident and visitor enjoyment of this highly valued area is too great,” says Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese. “As a result, we are deferring the harvest until we have identified a time-frame that works better for everyone.” “The planning and deployment of a harvesting operation has to consider a range of factors before it can go ahead, such as logging
crew availability, a market for the felled trees and access for other land users,” she says. Council now says a decision on when the harvest commences will be made once conversations with the neighbouring forest manager and key stakeholders have taken place to ensure minimum impact on residents and recreation users. A council spokesperson says while the harvest operation was focused on areas that had minimum direct impact on the existing trail network, the need to remove the felled trees via forest roads that are used by the public to access the trails meant that it was necessary to restrict access to large parts of the area over the three month harvest period. “I’m pleased that council has been able to change its plans so quickly in light of the feedback we received,” says Rachel. “Nelson attracts visitors from around the world to enjoy our high quality and diverse mountain biking and walking trails and I know that having unrestricted access to the Codgers recreation area over spring and summer will be good news to residents and visitors alike.”

Peta’s long and colourful life journey Peta Raggett always knew she was different but now, as her health fails, she tells her story to Charles Anderson. Peta Raggett started dressing in his mother’s clothes at about nine-years-old. Peta, born Peter, was never happy as a male. “I always knew,” she says. “I knew I was different. It’s the way it is but you just try and get by and blend into the wallpaper to keep yourself out of trouble.” But she was terrified that people would find out. Growing up in England before emigrating to New Zealand in 1966, Peta says the word “transgender” was hardly even known for many decades. “It’s only in the last 10 years that it has become more open,” she says. But in those earlier days, Peta tried to suppress what she knew. As a boy, she was teased mercilessly and frequently taunted about how she could have been a girl. To blend in, she even married twice and tried to live a “normal” existence. “But it didn’t work. Then, nobody will help you, so you go back to try and be and normal again.” For a long time, Peta kept as lower profile as she could get. She
would live two lives. The one that was in the public and the one was the “secretive” one that was at home. It was her work that also originally brought her to New Zealand for a job as a joiner and carpenter. “It’s a been a tough life one way or another,” she says. “I’ve had to learn to survive. Surviving as a transgender has not been very easy.” As a young man she was humiliated and depressed and attempted suicide. But it was her work that saved her. “Everything I put my hand to I could achieve.” She has tried everything from being a beagle breeder and model maker. Many of the model ships that are in Founders Park are hers. They have been loaned until she dies, when they will be gifted to the park, where she became a familiar face. For 17 years she worked behind the desk, greeting visitors. “Some people would look at you sideways.”
Peta Raggett is proud to be able to feel like herself after years of hiding it. Photo: Charles Anderson. Now, at 76-years-old, and with her health failing, Peta is telling her story to hopefully help others who are feeling marginalised to become empowered. “In my younger days there were no books or anyone to find out from what to do or where to go.” When she first raised the concept of gender realignment surgery with a doctor in 1985, all they recommended was Electric Shock Therapy. It was only 15 years ago that Peta
finally decided to commit to surgery to change her appearance to get breast implants. She gave away all male clothing that she had. “Some shunned me, others said how brave I was … most people I worked with in voluntary organisations were very good and accepted me. A few sneered and laughed but I soon decided if they have a problem with me it’s their hang up not mine.” Peta joined up with many
community groups, taking an active role. However, now with her health in decline she has pulled back. Peta says that she has no regrets about her life and has even been inspired to write a book about it. However, she is looking for help to try and get the colorful events from her past down on paper. “I have enjoyed every minute. You only live once. Life is not a rehearsal, get out and make the most of it.”

New signs mooted for Tahunanui Charles Anderson Editor
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Tahunanui is in need of a rebrand and the best way to do that is to let people know when they are passing through it. That’s the goal of a project to get new signs on Rocks Rd and the corner of Tahunanui Drive and Parkers Rd.
“The idea is that we need to give the area a bit more of an identity,” says Tahunanui Business Association chair Paul Matheson. “We need to show the place exists and it contributes heaps to Nelson.” The idea hasn’t been kicking around long but already they have approval from NZTA to put the signs up. Now it just needs Nelson City Council approval.
“People will get a good view of it and it won’t disrupt traffic,” Paul says. [The business association] all think it’s great. Most places have got them so why don’t we?” Paul is hopeful that council will push through its approval soon and then the association will hand ownership over to council for the signs’ upkeep. “We are thinking ‘why didn’t we do this before’.”

BILL DAHLBERG FOR MAYOR “Hi I’m Karen Stade, I have worked with Bill on various projects and can vouch he is a wonderful team builder and leader, a keen community man, and has a sound business mind and financial acumen. He is as honest as the day is long, a straight talker who asks the tough questions, and who seeks answers and solutions. He’s got my vote.” Stuart Walker - “I have been working alongside Bill on council for the last three years. He will be the Mayor that Nelson needs.” Nelson City Councillor Stuart Walker “Join me and put your tick in the box for Bill Dahlberg for Mayor of Nelson. Hi, I’m Elaine Hemi. I’ve known Bill for over 30 years. He’s honest, hardworking and enthusiastic in everything he commits to. His work with the Rata foundation and the healthier homes projects are well documented plus Bill’s complete transparency will ensure a council working together for a better future for all Nelsonians.” Elaine Hemi, Retired Senior Parking Warden.

Hampden Street: Dear Sir, The NCC is going to block off the west half of Hampden St from Waimea Rd, but at the same time is going to put traffic lights on the west side of Waimea Rd at the Bishopdale end. You could say that with regard to the traffic flow situation, the NCC’s “left hand doesn’t know what the right hand’s doing!” Anton Hyman Bare bums: I fully agree with Jessica Smith's letter regarding the picture of bare backsides [on the Weekly front page]. Sadly we live in a morally corrupt society where truth and decency no longer matter anything goes and it’s only going to get worse. Lyn Guyton Ideal council: Your coverage of the aspirations of those many
candidates who are contesting seats for Nelson City Council has been extensive and informative. Still, making decisions about who to vote for is like throwing a dart at a dart board. All candidates want pretty much the same things i.e. lower rates, a revitalised city centre, better financial management etc but which of these candidates can bring these to fruition? That is question that all ratepayers are thinking about as they complete their voting papers and perhaps now is the time for a new and committed group of councillors to be voted in. Unfortunately, the current council has, for a number of reasons, been largely dysfunctional and there has not been the collegiate harmony around the council table that ratepayers had expected. The fact that three sitting councillors are challenging the incumbent for the mayoralty confirms that. So yes, now is the time to have new people voted in to replace councillors, some who have been there for too long and have had their chance. We need new energy and

Jetstar to pull out of Nelson: Personally, I couldn’t care less, I dislike Jetstar with a passion, they’ve screwed me round with flights in the past. I avoid them like the bloody plague now. Steph Anderson
It has to have an effect, as they were carrying a number of people and competition is good in any business and it helps keep thing running. For myself, I normal fly Air NZ or Sounds Air. Now the other question is, will the remaining keep the price where they are, and will there be enough flights? Brian Bishop
I’ve flown to Wellington every other weekend for the last two-and-a-half years. I lost count of how many times Jetstar were hours late or cancelled flights all together. I stopped flying them because their service was appalling. Impossible to get through to speak to anyone on the phone that could do anything. The ground staff and attendants always lovely, though. I gave up on them completely a couple of months ago and almost exclusively fly Sounds Air now. Always on time and they haven’t
I avoid Jetstar like the plague. Only takes one crew member for an aircraft to call in sick and flights on that aircraft are cancelled for the day. Jetstar appear to have no back-up crew and no back-up aircraft. I've never had problems getting good fares on Air NZ, even to Christchurch where they're the sole carrier. Just book a month or so ahead, and avoid Fridays, Sunday afternoons and Monday mornings. But agree, a reliable competitor would be desirable. Dennis Goodman
Nelson Matters It is good news for Stoke that a new banking hub is to be established in the suburb early next year. This is a good outcome after the blow last year that the combined existing Kiwibank/ PostShop in Putaitai St would close. This positive outcome is the product of strong advocacy by Grey Power, Mayor Rachel Reese and the hundreds who attended last year’s public meeting and the thousands who signed our petition. It was an awful shock last November when Kiwibank and NZ Post announced the closure. There had been no consultation despite these publicly owned companies telling Parliament that they did
not withdraw services without first talking to the community. It was particularly galling when the Government had promised in its Coalition Agreement that it would be expanding services in the regions. It also made no sense when both Kiwibank and NZ Post Services in Stoke were busy and the population was growing. My greatest concern was the impact on the 4,500 older residents in Stoke, many of whom depend on face to face banking services for independence. Many older people, particularly those in their 80s and 90s do not use internet banking. Nor is the return trip by bus into the Nelson branch realistic
for many of these seniors. This U-turn is a credit to the united community response. The message from last year’s public meeting was unequivocal in wanting to retain services. I thank Stoke businesses for getting in behind the campaign and petition. Nelson Grey Power President Christine Tuffnell’s presentation to the Select Committee was stunning. She got the message through so effectively that even Government MPs from Labour, NZ First and the Greens found the closure indefensible. There is still work to ensure we get a good outcome. The existing Post Shop/Kiwibank closes on 16 October. It is to reopen on 21
Let's hope Sounds Air can step into the breach. They may be smaller but sure make up for it in service. Single monopoly is not good practice. Sue Sara I use Jetstar a lot and I've never had any issues with delays or cancelled flights. Plane was always full when I was on it. Sucks they are leaving Nelson. Tina Wadsworth Duncan
Well, look at what happened to Origin Air. All those years ago. Crikey, you can’t even fly into Rotorua from Nelson direct. You have to fly to Auckland. All airlines are corrupt. Frances Minogue

October as a pharmacy and Post Agency run by Nelson’s Hardy St Pharmacy. The new banking hub in Stoke will provide face to face services for all six banks – ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB and Westpac. It will be a multibranded smart ATM with online banking facilities with a support person to provide guidance and assistance. The new service may be in the Stoke Library, the Pharmacy or the new Greenmeadows Community Centre. I will be working with the Banking Association to get the service up and running next year in consultation with the Stoke community. My only disappointment is that if Kiwibank and NZ Post had

properly consulted with our community last November we would have avoided the uncertainty and gap in banking services this summer until the new banking hub opens in March. This positive outcome for banking services in Stoke shows that well organised petitions can make a difference. Two other Nelson petitions are still before Parliament. I will be working to ensure the same success with Karen Dow’s petition for introducing random roadside drug testing and Wendy Hamer’s on improving the rights of victims in cases involving those not guilty by way of insanity. French connection back in action Charles Anderson
When Mylene and Greg Auphin shut up their Hardy St restaurant last year they thought they would never again open another hospitality venue. The French couple, who ran the popular La Gourmandise for seven years, had always intended to start a business making high quality foods in jars. But to do that they needed a space. So, when they walked past their new premises on Rutherford St, opposite Nelson College for Girls, they saw that it had previously been a takeaway. It had the space, and being able to use the special sterilising cooker for their jarred food business was still a way off. So, they started cooking again for customers off the street. Rustic Cuisine was born. “Some of our old customers have come back,” says Mylene. “It’s nice to see them again. People are starting to know about it.” They serve everything from their popular crepes and galettes to pastries and the first incarnations of their jarred food, which has to be refrigerated until they are totally up and running. The meals range from coq au vin and chorizo and beans to rice pudding. They use reusable glass jars that can be brought back in for refill “We are seeing what people think about the concept of having nice food in a jar,” says Greg. “We can see what is working and what isn’t working.” They hope to start locally and stock grocery stores and supermarkets before taking it national. But right now, they are just thankful they aren’t running a 24/7 operation. They are still open three evenings a week. However, with two young children, Mylene says its important to spend time together. “It’s nice to have a family life.”

When Christine Leunens first started writing Caging Skies she had to eat slivers of rice and meat and share them with her husband to get by. A vision of its future success was far from her mind. “We were on a shoestring budget at the time and I had no funding,” the now Nelsonbased author says. “That’s how it started.” That was 19 years ago. But come Saturday, she will be flying to Hollywood to attend the premiere of the movie Jojo Rabbit, which is based off her book and directed by Taika Waititi . “I never in my wildest dreams that one day it would end up like this. In fact, I wish I had known.”
Christine was treated to a private sneak peak of the movie two months ago at Nelson’s State Cinema. She was joined by the film’s producer Carthew
Christine Leunens Neal, who is also originally from Nelson. “It was overwhelming because such a huge effort had been made,” she says. “I didn’t feel proud of me but felt proud, in a bizarre way, like I was the
mother of these imaginative children who don’t need me anymore.” Christine will be treated when in Los Angeles and feels a little overwhelmed having to rub shoulders with Hollywood A-listers, when she usually just works alone on her novels. “Going from just being in my room to being around people can be quite daunting.” Meanwhile she has also pledged her support to Literacy Aotearoa which provides free literacy and numeracy courses to more than 150 adults in Nelson each year. Christine is donating her writer’s fee for the Nelson Arts Festival Pukapuka Talks at Founders Heritage Park on Sunday, 27 October, to Literacy Aotearoa. The New Zealand premiere of Jojo Rabbit is later this month.

Prime Minister to judge Masked Parade Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will be the official judge of the Nelson Masked Parade and Carnivale 2019. Arts Festival director Charlie Unwin says the team is thrilled with the announcement, after all, who better to judge the parade than the Minister of Arts herself? “It’s very exciting, basically we asked, and she said yes,” he says. The theme for the 25th annual Masked Parade is “Discovery” which
Charlie says encompasses everything from Kupe to Cook to Curie, Da Vinci to Darwin to Dora the Explorer. Prime Minister Ardern will watch the parade, which marks the official opening of the Nelson Arts Festival, from the street and help judge the overall winner. He says it will be great for the children and the participants to have the Prime Minister on the corner where they’re performing.

OUR STORY Dr Scott and Gemma Newburn (Occupational Physician and Physiotherapist) returned to New Zealand after five years working in Australia. We settled in Central Otago and immediately saw the vastly different H&S culture. We saw employers struggling to navigate the systems and serious workplace injuries that were poorly managed and potentially preventable. These harsh realities shocked and inspired us to get out of the clinic and into the workplace where we could affect real change. We took the plunge with a move to Nelson, investing in and remodeling an old medical centre building in Richmond, opening Hemisphere Health and having our second baby all in the first few months of 2017! We love New Zealand’s hard-working culture but there are some downsides to our ‘she’ll be right’ attitude that results in some of the worst workplace health and injury statistics in the world. We have worked hard to recruit a great team of likeminded health professionals building the foundations of a fresh approach to workplace health supporting employers and their workers. With the success of the 2018 Chamber of Commerce Business Award for the best Emerging Business, 2019 has been a busy year recruiting two more Occupational Health Doctors to manage the increasing demand and we continue to work towards our vision of healthy thriving workplaces shaping New Zealand’s future.

What you bring to work (ie: your health conditions, previous injuries, fitness level, etc.) affects your risk at work as well as the way you feel. Physical and mental illness in the workplace costs New Zealand businesses millions of dollars each year. In one year alone, approximately 6.7 million working days in New Zealand are lost to absence due to ill-health, costing the economy $1.4 billion across the country.
Physical Health is defined as the condition and functioning of your body, from internal organs of the heart, lungs, kidneys to your joints, bones and muscles. Both physical health and mental health are critical in people thriving and reaching their full wellbeing potential.

Mental distress can show itself as anger, interpersonal conflict, sick leave, disengagement, poor work performance, mistakes and accidents – all of which cost businesses financially and take time to resolve, especially if they are not dealt with early. Given that statistically most of us are or will be working alongside someone suffering from mental health issues, what can businesses do to help? Talking with someone about their mental health or emotional wellbeing can feel intrusive, uncomfortable, none of our business, and we may be concerned we’re about to open-up a can of worms. However, on the flipside doing and saying nothing is potentially very costly to the business and the struggling worker. Based in Richmond Hemisphere Health has recently launched a Workplace Mental Health model to support local businesses to better understand and manage mental health issues they may be experiencing in their workplace. They have developed a practical 3 step model NOTICE - SAY - DO, that they are now training local individuals and workplaces to be more confident to recognise, talk about and take action early in the workplace. This proactive approach can reduce the likelihood of mental stress turning to distress or mental ill health. NOTICE: How to notice signs and symptoms of mental stress and distress early SAY: How to have the difficult conversations and be confident in what to say and what not to say DO: The confidence to take action to ensure people are supported in the workplace and have access the appropriate support This NOTICE – SAY – DO model is the foundation of their very effective and affordable Mental Health First Aid course. For the month of October they are offering an introductory 2 for 1 special with two spaces for only $170. Hemisphere Health also offer a full range of services to support workplace mental health; including EAP Counselling, Health and Wellbeing Medical Reviews, Performance Coaching and Wellbeing Champion Training.

Hemisphere Health developed this Mental Health Continuum to approach workplace mental health and wellbeing. Everybody experiences ups and downs on the spectrum with day to day, week to week and month to month variance. The annual Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business Awards recognise innovation and creativity in the business sector and are a highlight of Nelson Tasman’s business calendar. This year marks the event’s 31st anniversary. As well the recognition for local organisations, the awards provide an opportunity to benchmark businesses and advise how they can continue to grow. Held in November each year, the black-tie dinner is a special night of networking and celebrating success. This year there were 44 entries and nominations across all the categories. This year’s awards take place on Fri-
day, November 1st, at the Trafalgar Centre. Six local businesses have entered the Nelson Weekly Emerging Business award for a business that has started trading within the last 2 years. Amongst those participating is Archery Park, a business which combines a visit to a rare area of pristine native forest with a simulated archery hunting experience into a unique outdoor experience for all ages. Archery Park is for anyone who is interested in archery and a new way to experience nature. Located at Cable Bay Adventure Park, its archery adventures provide guided archery, team events, archery introductions and professional training facilities. Georgia Molea Homekill Ltd has also entered the ‘emerging business’ category. Partnered with Ellis Creek Farms, it is the only dual operated butchery in Golden Bay where they produce local products from locally grown animals they raise themselves on the land that they live on. “I’m in the most amazing place with my career with so much opportunity to develop my own knowledge whilst enjoying my passion in the butchery industry,” says Georgie. “Our region grows amazing animals
and I’m grateful I get to work with them to provide our wider community with products from the paddock to the plate, knowing that they’ve been respected through the whole process.” Another category is The NZME Small Business Award for a business that has an annual turnover of less than $1 million. Abel Tasman EcoTours and social enterprise Tasman Bay Guardians, which are founded and managed by Stew Robertson and Helen Forsey of Motueka, have entered this category. With years of experience transporting visitors around the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, the pair have up-skilled in marine ecology and environmental science. They have merged to create an authentic tourism experience that leaves a positive impact on the environment. The couple recently formed Tasman Bay Guardians to create a professional aquatic delivery team, educating kids, the wider community, facilitating clean-ups, environmental governance groups, habitat restoration and community collaboration. NZ Boat Sales Nelson is also competing in this category. Based in the stunning calm waters of Tasman Bay,

dlers, with plenty of easy-to-access coastline. If you are interested in paddling for fitness or simply enjoy being on the water, a surfski is a great way to achieve this. Surfskis are available in a range of different designs, including entry level models to suit beginners. On a surfski you can experience the thrill of gliding effortlessly over the water. Weighing considerably less than a plastic kayak, they are much easier to carry to the water. At Kayak HQ, we have the largest range of surfskis & accessories in the South Island. This summer we are supporting a couple of local events. First up is Paddlefest, happening over Labour Weekend. Secondly, in February, paddlers from around NZ will compete in the Queen & King of the Bay and the SI Champs. If you would like to learn more about surfski paddling, pop in and we can have a chat.
THE PERFECT BOAT FOR THOSE HARD TO REACH PLACES DESIGNED AND BUILT FOR HUNTING, FISHING AND ADVENTURE
The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season has started on the first of the month and while the odd snapper has been caught in the shallows the majority of them still seem to hang around d’Urville Island. This doesn’t mean that fishing in the Bay is pointless, quite the opposite! At the moment you can see a lot of surfcasters, especially on the back beach and on Rabbit Island. Most of them are not after snapper but rig sharks, a species often overlooked by other anglers. Not only do they make excellent eating, they are also great fun to catch – if you know how! The trick is to use the right bait, rig will hardly ever eat fish or squid baits, they don’t even have teeth. Instead, they exclusively feed on shellfish and crustaceans, paddle crabs seem to be a favourite. If you can’t catch any of these supermarket prawns
will do the trick too (and are easier to attach to the hook). Specialised gear is not essential, but don’t underestimate these fish, they are powerful fighters and can grow up to 30kg! (the average fish will be around 3 to 5kg). If you fish from the shore you don’t have to cast far, rig will come right into the shallows, especially if the water is a bit murky or at night. Bleed, gut and trunk (chop off head and fins) your catch immediately and put it on ice for best results. The fillets are white, firm and suitable for any type of cooking, fish and chips being an all-time favourite. Rig sharks can be entered into the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club competition, an ideal opportunity to snag some early points, even when it’s too windy to take the boat out. Suburbs players snubbed after awards win Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Two of Nelson’s most successful footballers have been snubbed by Tasman United. Suburbs striker Cam Gordon won the Mainland Premier League’s Golden Boot after his stellar season, scoring 34 goals, while Corey Wilson was named the tournament’s top goalkeeper for a second consecutive year. However, neither accolade was enough to secure a contract for the national league. Tasman United general manger Nic Foster says new coach Jess Ibrom has signalled his intention to give Nelson players and youth players opportunities. “I think the final squad will reflect this thinking.” Nic says that the national league foreign imports ruling has been reduced by New Zealand Football and he says that both of those players come under this category. Tasman have already signed keepers Nick Stanton and 21-year-old Pierce Clark from Queensland, with striker Jama Boss from Manukau also on the
books. They have also announced New Caledonian international JeanPhilippe Saïko as another striker. Cam and Corey were surprised by the omission having been part of the SFL champion Suburbs side. Both players agree, while the personal recognition is a bonus, winning a title for the first time in a decade was the far more satisfying success. “Awards are a nice bit on the side but to be a part of a team that won the league for the first time in a while is even more special,” says Cam. Corey says the side has an incredibly strong brotherhood. “We wanted to die for each other on the field, as cheesy as that sounds.” The pair each had seasons riddled with highlights with Corey citing his unlikely goal against Caversham as a top moment. With his newborn son watching for the first time and his side trailing by one entering injury time, Corey came out of goal to score at the other end in a dramatic end to the game. “It was the loudest cheer I’ve heard at Saxton in three years and
considering we won the league by one goal it obviously was important. It’s up there with my best footballing moment ever.” Cam says the pick of his 34 goals was, without doubt, his matchwinner against rivals Cashmere Tech in Christchurch. He says the Suburbs environment is the best he has ever been involved in. “I felt welcome from day one, it’s a great changing room.” Having been granted residency last week, Corey has settled in the region with his fiancée and son. “It’s a big relief knowing I can stay here and as I’m not required for national league, I will just enjoy my summer off and spend some time with the family.” Cam will return to the UK for summer but says there is every chance he will be back in blue next year. “I will see what life holds, try to get a job, but if things don’t work out back home, I wouldn’t say no.” Being in the form of his life, Cam says he was disappointed not to be staying and playing in the ISPS Handa Premiership. “I thought there was a good chance of being involved, but that’s football.”

Theatrics, athleticism and scores of ravenous fans baying for blood took centre stage at the Stoke Hall on Saturday night. Professional wrestling returned to the region in style at the Waka Warfare show which saw comedy meet violence in a three-hour spectacular. SportS Cricket: Nelson cricketer Thomas Zhorab blasted a century for the New Zealand U19s in its one-day clash with Bangladesh last week. The former Nelson College and Athletic Old Boys all-rounder struck eight boundaries in his 142ball stay at the crease as the Kiwis posted 262-6 in Christchurch. Bangladesh would go on to reach the total with six wickets to spare. Harriers: The long-awaited 5km Spring Race Series started last Wednesday from Smugglers in Tahunanui with 79 runners taking part in the first of five races. The fast, flat circuit around the streets in the Tahunanui ensured a close battle with just one second separating Hayden Squance, 17.09mins, from second placed male Joe Robson. WEDNESDAY 9 October 2019 19.17mins only took four seconds out of Klaartje Van Schie. Peter Hague was the clear winner of the walking section in 30.12mins. The Mako end up fifth of the six teams but are still in the race for end-of-season honours. Pickleball: Though the name ‘pickleball’ sounds a bit comical, its serious stuff for players that take the court twice a week in Nelson. A hybrid of tennis, badminton and ping pong, the game is gaining popularity in the region. The game uses large paddles and a hollow ball known as a wiffle which does not bounce high or travel quickly, giving players more time to react than traditional racquet sports. Local softballer avenges bitter loss Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson softballer Matt Lowe had a whole year to think about the game that got away. Matt was the only surviving player from the 2018 U17 Development Sox side which finished second in Australia. However, he avenged the loss in style in July as he captained the side to victory at the U17 international friendship series and was named best batter of the tournament. It all came down to the final innings of the final against Queensland with New Zealand eventually winning 6-3. “Being able to lead them to a title was very special,” says Matt. The 15-year-old was in top form, hitting two home runs and setting up seven other runs for his team, known as RBIs. He says the win was made all the sweeter after falling short the year before. However, the match could be his last for a while as the young star will have to sit out the start of the forthcoming season after breaking his foot playing rugby. Matt first damaged his foot during an innocuous training drill for the Nelson College
mad
Nelson softballer Matthew Lowe was a member of the winning development sox in an international friendship series back in July. Photo: Jonty Dine under 15s but was unaware of the extent of the injury. “I didn’t think it was broken, I just thought it was a joint issue.” It was two weeks later when playing the first game at a tournament in Christchurch that he heard a ‘crack’. “It was the first minutes of the game, I tackled a big guy and my foot landed awkwardly.” However, the stubborn number 8 soldiered on and finished the game. After removing his boot, seeing the bruising and struggling to walk, he was taken to hospital and told he had a stress fracture. He says he will miss out on first half of the softball season as he undergoes rehabilitation. However, he says the injury will not stop him continuing to play
both sports. Matt started playing softball as an eight-year-old at Clifton Terrace School. His first foray into the national setup involved a nervy wait for a phone call he thought may not come. “They had my number wrong so couldn’t get hold of me, I waited a week, but they said they would be contacting us within two days.” As days went by, Matt began to doubt the selection by says he knew he did everything he could. However, the call eventually came and signaled the start of a very promising career as Matt aims to follow his brother Nick’s footsteps into the Junior Black Sox and beyond.

It’s back to the future for speedway!!!
By Wayne Martin
It’s another huge season here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway with a total of thirteen top class meetings pencilled in for the new summer season. A lot of the old favourite shows are back such as the Trackman Trophy night (opening night), Coca Cola Fireworks, Demolition Derby, Easter Extravaganza and the return of the King of the Clay meeting on 14th March. Also making a big come back after a season off is the Racing for the Kids meeting on the 15th February where we are once again raising funds for the Child Cancer Foundation. This entire meeting will be dedicated to the kids with two youth classes racing - both the Youth Ministocks racing their annual Ministock Mania (12yrs – 16yrs) and the Nelson Club are hosting the Quarter Midgets (8yrs – 15yrs) as well. That night we will also be running
the kids bike races as it was so popular last season. The Nelson Speedway Association will be raising money in the run up to this event as well as on the night so please help us by digging deep to help those kids that are fighting the tough fight. If you are more interested in the major championships, then we have a stack of them as well. The big one for the season would have to be the Southern Streetcars New Zealand Midget Grand Prix on the 18th January. If you were lucky enough to have witnessed the New Zealand championship here a couple of seasons ago then you would know it was one of the most exciting meetings to have ever been held here. We expect to see all the big names in Midget racing here once again and possibly the appearance of some American drivers as well. The small but super-fast Nelson track is perfect for Midget racing so this should once again be a stunner!
Expect this type of action at the PTS Superstock Stampede. Photo credit to Imagepress

Speedway Keeping on the Midget theme the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway is also hosting the Absolute Energy South Island Midget championship on Dec 14th. This will be a great chance for all the Midget drivers to get some laps and get dialled in for the Grand Prix a month later. Other South Island titles we are hosting are the Hi Reach Access Solutions South Island Superstock championship on Feb 29th and our first ever Donaldson Civil South Island Production Saloon championship will feature on the same night as the Demolition Derby on the 28th Dec. As far as other top line promotions go, we once again host two rounds of the Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcar series with the first of our rounds scheduled for the 16th Nov and the second later in the season on the 28th Mar. The longstanding Super Saloon series is also back for another season with the now named Mag & Turbo Supercup series pencilled in for the 1st of Feb. Super Saloons have been a big part of our clubs history so it’s always great to be hosting a big field of these fuel injected monsters here in Nelson. Also, this season we have scheduled the Stockcar team’s triples on the 30th

There has been a distinct lack of teams racing here the last couple of seasons especially after the demise of the once strong Nelson Tigers but with the Tasman Thunder fielding a strong team this

season the club are getting behind them and there is nothing better than a hardhitting teams race here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway. The two teams to take on the local Tasman Thunder are yet to be named but we are working on the Canterbury Crushers and the Greymouth Grizzlies to hopefully fill the spots. Teams racing is always a crowd

favourite here in Nelson so this should be a great show. Other Stockcar teams races are in the planning stages as well with some Streetstock teams racing thrown in for good measure for local fans to see the Nelson Knights get some practice laps in before their big teams race meetings around the country. Last (but by no means least) is what will be the biggest new promotion we have seen in many years here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway. This season will see the birth of our new and exciting PTS Superstock Stampede on the 16th Nov. With the Superstock numbers down here in Nelson and with such a huge history in this class over the years we (the club) and the Superstock drivers and organisers have got together to come up with what will be the next big thing in Superstock racing here in New Zealand. Already some big sponsors have come on board with this event which will cost in the vicinity of $25,000 to host. This event was capped at thirty-six entries with three extra wildcards thrown in by the promoter which will see thirty nine top line Superstocks all vying for that top spot on the podium after a fifteen lap feature race.

Speedway A different type of format has been put together for the Stampede with all the drivers seeded and put into three groups. Each group will race each other over the night with the top twenty six point’s scorers going through to the fifteen lap one race final. To make it even more interesting the top ten qualifiers will first compete in a six lap shootout with the driver who takes the win getting pole position in the final as well as the shootout cash. Wherever the top ten finish in the shootout is where they will start in the final winner takes all feature race. This is a different type of format for the Superstock class but one that should promote some fast furious racing this early in the season. This will be a “must see” event as we will also be hosting the Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcar series here on the same night. This meeting will also be live streamed to the world through The Pits media as well so if you can’t make it on the night you can enjoy the racing where ever you are on this planet. Once again we are running ten classes with the intention of hosting Quarter Midgets and Historic Stockcars at varying times during the season. The Three Quarter Midgets are still showing some good growth with drivers from the likes of Ministocks moving into that class while the likes of Streetstocks, Stockcars, Production Saloons, Sidecars and Youth Ministocks numbers continue to remain steady. The blue ribbon classes such as Midgets,
WEDNESDAY 9 October 2019
Sprintcars and Superstocks, although light on numbers, will still be turning laps here with the club putting on the different types of series and promotions such as the PTS Superstock Stampede to attract the out of town competitors to boost the local numbers. They say the strength of any sporting club is in its juniors and it’s no different here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Our Youth Ministock class just keeps on turning out driver after driver into the big brother classes and often the experience they gain from the youth class normally means they are hot on the pace from their first foray into the senior ranks. This season sees a new bunch of fledgling twelve-year olds join the rest of the kids in another big field of Ministocks as the speedway nursery continues to go from strength to strength. A couple of these younglings that will have a few eyes on them this season are Luke Higgins and Jack Burson who are both sons of a couple of local speedway legends and after the practice runs pre-season both look to have come to grips with the Moutere clay. The Youth Ministock class is the future of our club and the future looks bright for more speedway stars to come out of the local Nelson nursery. Any more information can be found at nelsonspeedway.co.nz or via the official club Facebook page just search for Nelson Speedway Association Inc. This Saturday night the gates open 5.00pm with the racing starting at 6.00pm.

TPL opens cricket season with a thriller Peter Grigg
The foibles of cricket were clearly on display as the first round of the TPL club cricket competition kicked off on Saturday. While there were two centuries scored and a couple of comfortable victories, there were also a pair of highlycontroversial finishes. Nelson College and the Falcons both completed tradesman-like wins. At Horton Park in Blenheim though, WTTU went on something of a go-slow to ensure the requisite number of overs were not completed in time to allow the Dolphins what would have been a compelling victory. At the Marsden Rec things
became farcical as play carried on in the near pitch-black conditions at 7.45pm. In the end though, the umpire made the decisions and it resulted in compelling viewing and a tantalising tied match. After something of a disastrous start, an imperious knock by Patrick Howes propelled The Car Company Stoke Nayland to a commanding total on day one of the new season. Daniel Grimes made the early inroads for ACOB as the champions stuttered to three wickets down for just eight runs in the sixth over of the innings. Enter Howes and a revival with keeper/batsman Ricky Edwards, and then an impeccable partnership with Clayton Campbell which firmly wrested the initiative back to
Stoke Nayland. Campbell played his part in the 120-run partnership, but it was Howes who took charge. He hit 14 boundaries and three sixes in a 117-ball knock which featured fine shots all around the park. Especially for the first week of the season, Howes looked to be in great nick. By the time the wily Reuben Smith had snared him caught and bowled, the damage was done. Smith, Grimes and Ollie JonesAllen toiled away with the ball, but it appeared to be Howes’ day. The 262-run total seemed a faroff dream as ACOB fell to four down for 60, albeit after only eight overs. However, a belligerent Grimes’ knock, supported by evergreen Englishman Jake Milton,

steadied the ship as they added 103 runs. Milton, returning to ACOB from a long stint in England, looked a class act and oozed composure as he took control of proceedings. First Smith and then Jones-Allen offered him support as Milton assuredly worked the ball into the gaps. When Jones departed with the total at eight for 219 things looked out of reach. Joseph Gregan, however, had other ideas as he and Milton cleverly inched towards the target. At 48 overs gone, with Marsden Rec in pitch black as the streetlights glowed in the night, scores were tied. Milton danced down the track to Turtle Clark and was easily stumped by Edwards. Gregan was then run out by a nice piece of fielding in the circle by
skipper Brendan Hodgson and it was all over. Results Stoke Nayland 262/9 (Patrick Howes 117, Clayton Campbell 45, Reuben Smith 3/38, Daniel Grimes 2/38) ACOB 262 (Daniel Grimes 71, Jack Milton 60, Dylan Eginton 3/56, Thomas Chambers 2/49) Match tied Nelson Collesge 212/2 (Jack Morris 104*, Finn Raxworthy 56, Finn Restieaux 29*) Taylors Contracting Wanderers/ Motueka 57 (Finn Raxworthy 5/4, Jarrod McKay 3/11) Nelson College won by 155 runs Falcons 144 (41.4 overs) Wakatu 86/6 (24.5 overs). Match abandoned. Win to Falcons on D/L System. WTTU 156 (49.4 overs) Dolphins 90/0 (19 overs). Match abandoned. Points shared.
GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House Julius Vogel
Prime Minister Julius Vogel’s vision for New Zealand’s growth, included boosting immigration, and purchasing, with overseas borrowing, Māori land for farming. The initial immigration scheme of the 1840’s had been scaled down and Vogel reinvigorated
the campaign with assisted and free immigration for British and European workers. He recognised the need for an experienced workforce for the construction of roads, bridges, railways, and telegraph lines, and the establishment of productive farms.
