Finn’s NBA dream one step closer As he laid his head on his pillow night after night when he was a kid, Finn Delany often tossed and turned with thoughts dancing in his head of one day being an NBA player. It didn’t matter that he grew up in Nelson, far away from the global basketball limelight. Dreams of a career in the NBA for

Nelson Giant Finn Delany is on the verge of realising his NBA dream. We track him down to his new home, Dallas, Texas, where he is fast becoming a breakout star. Finn were as common as lacing up a pair of sneakers. Now, however, the Nelson Giant’s dreams are close to becoming a reality.

Finn is one of 14 players on the Dallas Mavericks’ summer league roster. It’s the first time Finn, who turns 24 in August, has participated

with any NBA summer league squad – an off season competition that aims to seek out new talent. “Every other basketball player grows up dreaming about the NBA, so it’s a little bit surreal to be here and to be a little bit closer to that,” he says. The 6’7” guard/forward says he is just taking it a day at a time.

“I’m just trying to play as hard as I can and just trying to not really focus on that, but focus on getting better, focus on the moment, making the most of the situation.” Finn says the NBA plays differently to any other country.

“Every other country has their little intricacies how they play. I just want to learn how to play here the best I can, and be great in my role and just learn as much as I can.” Summer league coach Mike Weinar said the best is yet to come from a player many believe can develop into becoming the breakout star of the summer for the Mavs. “We’re looking to get him some more opportunities. Obviously, that’s a position that is very important, so we’re looking to get him some more reps and see what he can do.” Mike has noticed Delany’s desire to soak up as much knowledge about the NBA as possible. “Finn is certainly an experienced player for his age, he’s had a lot of international

experience, and he has a good feel for the game.” Mike hopes to see Finn become more assertive and step into his role. “He’s his own player and we’re looking to develop his overall game.” After Finn’s stint in the Maverick’s mini-camp, they were impressed with what they saw and invited him back for the summer league. For Finn, it was as if the team had invited him to dinner so he could order his favourite entrée. “The guys are great, the coaches are great, the staff here is amazing, the facility is amazing, I’m really happy to be here, grateful, and just trying to make the most of the opportunity.” – Story with Dwain Price of Mavs.com

Current councillor Bill Dahlberg is putting his name forward for the Nelson city mayoralty. Bill says he made the decision after seeing what other candidates were on the cards and becoming concerned about the future leadership of the city. Mike Ward and Mel Courtney have announced they are running, however, current mayor Rachel Reese has not said if she will stand again. “I think the city deserves strong leadership,” Bill says. “So I’m going for the mayor’s role and I’m serious about that and helping to build a council team that will be working with our communities.” Bill says he will only run for the mayoralty and not council. Despite helping Rachel get elected as part of her past campaign team, he says that if she was interested in the role, she should have announced it by now. “I think we are losing our way. Rachel has done lots of positive stuff, but I need to make a commitment.”

Bill Dahlberg current chief executive Pat Dougherty. “You need to build teamwork with councillors, chairs and the chief executive and general managers. They all need to be on the same page. They need to be relying on each other and that’s what I’m really good at – team building.” Bill says if the voters think he is good enough then he is up for the challenge. “It’s a big challenge, it’s exciting.”

Bill, who has helped run myriad organisations across Nelson and nationally, says part of the frustration with council is that it is a “marathon not a sprint.” “It’s about organisation, structure and working as a team. You need to make decisions and get people working around the table in a timely manner.” He says that the city had a “golden opportunity” to be served by a high performing council with the help of the

Nelson shines: Nelson continues to shine bright as the country’s sunniest city. The city has again topped the sunshine hours charts in the latest data released by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa). Nelson pipped its neighbour Marlborough for June to keep the crown by just 17 hours. Of the available, regularly reporting sunshine observation sites, the sunniest four regions in 2019 to date are Nelson (1446 hours), Marlborough (1429 hours), Bay of Plenty (1403 hours) and Taranaki (1380 hours).

Teen’s mission to clean up Nelson Kate Russell

Nelson teenager Sophie Weenink-Smith is on a mission to save the planet, one beach at a time. The 13-year-old organised a mass rubbish clean-up at Tahunanui Beach on Sunday, which attracted more than 200 people who collected 200kg of rubbish in under two hours. “At first, I thought about ten people would come, so I am really happy,” Sophie says. “I

was amazed at the turn-out. Even people walking their dogs along the beach asked what was happening and wanted to join in. “It was so cool seeing people of all ages on the beach with their bags, marching like an army.” The Nelson College for Girls student is also a member of Young Labour and says she wanted to organise a cleanup to celebrate the ban on single-use plastic shopping bags, which came into effect

on July 1. “A lot of people don’t like all the plastic that is going into our oceans, but don’t do anything about it. So, I thought it would be cool to do something amazing like this to unite people,” says Sophie. There were plenty of cigarette butts, old fireworks, food wrappers, straws, and even an old hair straightener among the collection. Sophie says, although it can be a challenge to stop using

single-use plastics, it’s easy once you get into the habit. “I’ve a reusable drink bottle and I don’t use plastic straws or Glad Wrap anymore.” After the clean-up there were hot drinks, a vegetarian sausage sizzle and spot prizes from local businesses. Sophie says she has already started thinking about her next clean up. “The next step is more beaches and a river clean-up - maybe five rivers over five days.”

Flu factor in deaths: Three people in the top of the South Island who have died in the last six weeks had their symptoms exacerbated by the flu. Nelson Marlborough Health medical officer of health Dr Stephen Bridgman said the deaths were all people aged over 65 and all had type A influenza. He said the flu had been a strong contributing factor in the deaths. Bridgman said older people, some of who had other existing health conditions, were vulnerable to influenza which is why free immunisation was offered to those over 65.

Rotary makes history: The Rotary Club of Rutherford, for the first time since it was chartered on 1981, is making history by appointing Trudie Brand as its first elected female president. Trudie, who has been a member of the Rutherford Rotary since March 2017, says she is extremely honoured to be appointed as the first female president. “I have witnessed the positive impacts that Rotary has had on this community and throughout the world.” The goal for this year is to have a re-energized club working collectively with other community service providers to support a wider and diverse community engagement.

Nelson City Council is set to bring Bay Dreams back to the city next year - and possibly for the next five years. The council are in negotiations with the organisers of the popular festival to make it a regular fixture. The inaugural Bay Dreams South attracted 20,000 people to Trafalgar Park in January this year. Tash Sultana,

Shapeshifter, Cardi B, Sticky Fingers and Peking Duk were all part of the epic line-up. In 2020, the Nelson festival will be held on January 4 with the first acts expected to be announced by the end of the month. Mayor Rachel Reese says council is enthusiastic about the prospect of Bay Dreams becoming a regular event in Nelson. “The January 2019 event was a huge success and we’re keen to share our city and region with

visitors again. It was an absolute blast to welcome 20,000 young people to our city, many of whom were visiting for the first time,” she says. Festival director Toby Burrows says returning to Nelson “makes perfect sense”. “It was such a popular event last time, selling out in a few weeks. It was a no brainer to look to return the event to Nelson regularly. “Nelson is a great holiday destination and having the event at the Trafalgar Centre

and Trafalgar Park venues so close to the city centre, with the stunning sea views, make for an epic setting to host a large-scale music festival of this nature.” Rachel says she looks forward to progressing the opportunity. “The team and all the volunteers involved were a pleasure to work alongside, and we can see this festival developing further as a key event on the New Zealand music calendar.”

Nelsonians’ calls for safer roads are being heard with a review of the speed limit on State Highway 6 at Atawhai to be undertaken. The Nelson City Council asked NZTA in 2018 to investigate reducing the speed from 100kmh to 80kmh on the busy highway from Haven Rd to Todd Bush Rd. Mayor Rachel Reese is relieved at the news that the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has taken on board her repeated requests for the review. “The announcement this week that the NZTA review of the speed limit on this section of road has moved up its work programme is fantastic news for our community.” Rachel says she has written to the NZTA Board, strongly advocating for this speed limit review. “This is a key road safety concern for our city and I’m pleased that we are now seeing some action that will help to make it safer for Atawhai residents and all road users,” Rachel says. She says it’s reassuring that their pleas for action now have been heard and this review is now a priority. At the recent Regional Transport Committee meeting, NZTA staff reported that work on the speed reduction is already underway. Staff say they expect a consultation with the public about the change within the next two months.

We need to deal with alcohol Sara Hollyman Carol McIntosh says we need to start as early as possible when helping young people get healthy habits around alcohol. For the past several weeks the Nelson Weekly has been looking at the issues around alcohol and violence on our streets. Carol, who works in Nelson Marlborough Health’s alcohol health promotion service, says we live in a culture where alcohol is normalised. “We don’t think of it as a drug and we could be forgiven for not realising the associated risks that go with its use, especially if you are a young person.” Carol, along with her two colleagues Hilary Genet and Rosey Duncan, has been the driving force behind a local initiative which is helping parents delay teenage drinking for as long as possible. ‘The Plan’ is a project that assists families in creating a plan around how they will deal with alcohol. Carol says there is more research available now about the harms

of starting to drink younger and how it makes you more likely to create a pattern of drinking as you get older. “It’s a massive problem for parents, you get the 16th birthday party and this is where the requests start coming in and they’re a bit in the dark about what to do.” She says the alcohol industry puts a huge amount of pressure on parents. “You’ve got these beautifully made RTDs that are right bangon ready for kids, parents are not quite sure what other parents are doing and what the general trend is and there’s pressure from the kids.” She says the changes to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, which now require parents to get express consent if they want to supply alcohol to other teenagers, is a step in the right direction, but there is still so much work to be done. “Our brains are not finished developing really until around the age of 25 and early intoxication is one of the major factors in having a drinking problem later in life. “It seems to be that parents still often supply up to five or six drinks at a time, which is a shed load of alcohol for an adult let alone for a kid.”

Carol says alcohol is much more firmly established than it used to be. “When we were growing up, we didn’t know about the brain development and didn’t know that, actually, this was going to affect the kids later on, you just had no idea really.

“Now, it’s in cafes, it’s at baby showers, it’s just really crept into our lives. Alcohol Action NZ say that five government policy changes need to happen to really change the culture of drinking: Raise the price, raise the purchase age, reduce alcohol accessibility,

Staff Reporter Applications are now open for the annual Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. The awards were established 31 years ago by the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce to celebrate businesses in the local community. Chamber chief executive Ali Boswijk says that, win or lose, past entrants always describe the awards process as very worthwhile. “One thing we consistently hear from entrants is that they really value the opportunity to work on their business. We know that for many people, the day-to-day can become all consuming, but equally taking the time to review and strategise is vital to business development and growth. The awards provide a framework for this to happen.” There are several categories that organisations can enter - Emerging, Small, Medium or Large business. A supreme winner is then decided from these category winners. Two other categories include Clever Business Award and the Community Impact Award. Last year, a new category was added which provides the opportunity

for people to choose the winner by public vote. These are Business Person of the Year and Young Business Person of the Year. Nominations are accepted by members of the community and five finalists are subsequently selected and then voted for by the public. Last year’s winners were Pic Picot and Benjamin Clark respectively. “This has proven to be a great addition to the awards and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the entrepreneurial individuals behind some of our most successful and emerging businesses,” Ali says. Judges this year are Meg Matthews, Lester Binns, Euan McIntosh, Jonny Hendriksen, and Alan Dunn. Lester says applicants should explain “what makes your business awesome:”. “Use the entry to tell the story of your business. Don’t focus on hitting word limits or overly worry about what to write. 70,000 native trees to protect Waimea Inlet Staff Reporter The One Billion Trees Fund is committing more than $1 million to support the restoration of the Waimea Inlet. Forestry Minister Shane Jones and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor made the funding announcement last week at a tree planting event in Richmond. The investment comes from the $240 million grants and partnership fund as part of the Government’s One Billion Trees programme. Shane says this is a significant

opportunity that will see more than 70,000 native trees planted across the estuary over the next three years. Shane says there is a growing understanding of the significant ecological role this inlet plays, particularly for rare and threatened native plants and animals and important populations of coastal wetland birds and migratory wading birds. The Waimea Inlet is under threat because of excess silt flowing in from land clearance and pollution from sewage, industrial waste and agricultural runoff.

When Kate Fulton first stood for council in 2010, she was a 38-year-old single mum to three young children with $450 in her bank account. “I had just moved back to Nelson from living in Australia for 20 years and wasn’t sure what I was going to do until I had lunch with the daughter of Kerry Marshall, who was the mayor at the time. “We went through a list of the things I was interested in -

environmental stewardship, climate change and community connection and she said, ‘oh, you should stand for council’.” This was two weeks from nominations cut-off and it had never entered her mind that she might be interested in local government, let alone standing for council. “So, I met with Kerry and he talked about local government politics being where all the care happens, the place where you can make the greatest difference and have the greatest impact on community well-being.”

That sealed the deal for Kate and, although she could only afford to run two ads, she earned a seat on council, coming in tenth place with four other women around the table - Rachel Reese, Ali Boswijk, Ruth Copeland and Gail Collingwood. Kate is now seeking her fourth term in the upcoming October local body elections and is encouraging other women to do so too - no matter what walk of life they are from. This comes off the back of Minister for Women Julie Anne

Genter’s visit to Nelson last week, where she spoke about diversity and gender balance on councils and boards. Currently the gender imbalance is 23 per cent in Nelson. In the 2016 election, just 10 out of 32 candidates were women and only three made it onto council. So far, Kate, current councillor Gaile Noonan as well as Trudie Brand, Rachel Sanson, Yvonne Bowater and Judene Edgar have put their hand up. Candidate nominations open on July 19 and close on August 16.

It was supposed to be a night of burnouts and drag races, but the ‘Nelson Invasion’ was repelled by a strong police presence on Friday night. Motorheads from across the Tasman region descended on the city for the meet which was advertised in a public Facebook group dubbed the “Nelson Invasion”. More than 1000 people responded to the online event. Police units were already stationed at Tahunanui Beach where the initial meet occurred and were quick to pull over several drivers. About 50 cars met around 9pm before convoying to the Farmers carpark in Richmond. Police maintained a strong presence throughout the evening which one person in attendance says was “overkill”. “We were just trying to have a bit of fun and of course they had to ruin it.” The self-proclaimed petrol head says the night was not about causing mayhem but about car enthusiasts getting the chance to socialise. “It can be hard for us to have meets like this because the public gets upset.” They say such events will keep happening whether police crash the party or not. The person said that the organisers should have kept it off Facebook. Generous donations of lovingly made handknitted goods for elderly people in need have filled Age Concern Nelson Tasman, thanks to various knitting groups around the region. The crocheted blankets and quilts, scarves, hats, gloves, hand-warmers, socks and slippers come in a bright array of colours and have been crafted by the Nelson and Tahunanui library knitting groups, as well as the Nelson quilters guild. Age Concern Nelson Tasman manager Caroline Budge says the knitted good are ready and waiting for older people who are needing a little extra warmth this winter. “We don’t need any more donations. What we would like are homes and people to give these out to,” she says. Nelson Matters Everyone is affected by cancer. Someone is diagnosed with cancer on average every day and someone dies from cancer every second day in our Nelson/ Tasman region. Amazing progress has been made with new and better treatments but much more needs to be done in saving lives from this cruel disease. Many Nelsonians have signed Blair Vinings 130,000 strong petition to Parliament seeking a National Cancer Agency and better and more consistent care for cancer sufferers. Blair, a 38 year old Southland farmer, supported by his wife and two young daughters, is battling terminal bowel cancer. He says he has been let down by the health

system with delayed appointments and denial of medicine available elsewhere. It is incredibly brave of the Vining family, with limited time left together, to be leading this debate. Parliament needs to take heed of their message. It is not good enough that New Zealand’s cancer care is substandard to Australia. We would save 650 kiwi lives a year, or 13 a year in Nelson and Tasman, if we had the same access to the same drugs and timelines of treatments as across the Tasman. The Government is failing to live up to its promises on cancer care. Labour promised a new $20 million fund for new drugs but has not delivered. They also

promised a National Cancer Agency but the Prime Minister has now back pedalled saying its assessing other options. I also take issue with the Labour Government’s decision to cancel the requirement for District Health Boards to measure and report on cancer treatment. National’s Faster Cancer Treatment targets required patients to see a specialist for diagnosis within two weeks of referral from a GP and that their treatment begin within 62 days. The debate about new cancer drugs does need to be handled with care. Pharmaceutical companies can overstate the benefits of their new drugs and exploit the vulnerability of cancer pa-

Rocks Rd revamp again delayed Rocks Rd has long been thought of as Nelson’s neglected jewel in its transport network. It runs along a prime piece of real estate, linking the city to the sea and ultimately to a world-class innercity beach. But while it has everything going for it, Rocks Rd is also a state highway. If you try and run, walk or even cycle that route, the word ‘world-class’ is not what you reach for. So, it was with much jubilation, no matter whether you think the highway should be moved, when the NZTA said it was looking to investigate the possibility of a walkway/cycleway. This, however, was inextricably linked to its work looking at whether a new highway should be created, known as the “Southern Link”. When that investigation was separated out again, it seemed

But last week, came another apparent roadblock. NZTA said it needed more time because of the risks of sea level rise and climate change along Rocks Rd. “We need to ensure that what is proposed and constructed on Rocks Road to benefit pedestrians and cyclists will work in an integrated way with the rest of the transport system,” said NZTA’s Jim Harland. He said any solution needed to be long-lasting and robust, particularly given the damage we saw in early 2018 with the excyclone storm surges.

So, the Rocks Road walking and cycling investigation will now be aligned with the wider transport network study between Stoke and central Nelson. Mayor Rachel Reese told the Nelson Weekly that she was disappointed that NZTA didn’t do a more detailed investigation of the seawall earlier. Despite the setback, Rachel says that Rocks Rd remains a key project for council to enhance the waterfront. “Council has been committed to improving city to seas walkways and we remain committed.” She says as the state highway is an NZTA-owned asset, they need to

ensure they understand the costs and challenges associated. “One thing I have been aware of is the challenge of building structures in coastal marine area and planning law around it.” Rachel says in order to be greenlit by a waterfront, all alternative options must have considered. “My frustration is that NZTA hasn’t really dealt with this reality, this was a conversation started three years ago.” However, Regional Transport Committee Chair Councillor Mike Rutledge says while the delay is disappointing to both council and the community, it is important the process is done well.

“Nelson City Council has a long-held vision for improving connections from the city to the sea. What happens on Rocks Road is utterly crucial to that.” Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey says, at first, he was disappointed that the project would be delayed. Now, Matt says he is actually optimistic that NZTA will come back with a plan to give the waterfront, highway, homes and businesses down there some armour to protect them from the impact of climate change. “The design will incorporate the walkway/cycleway that Nelson so deserves.” But residents won’t have any idea of what that might look like until the middle of next year, when NZTA comes back to council with their options.

Three-metre-tall giraffes, dancing gazelles and ferocious lions will be taking over the Theatre Royal stage next week as the Lion King Jr comes to town for the school holidays. The Nelson Youth Theatre production is on from 17 – 20 July in a one hour show especially designed for the region’s smallest theatre fans. The Lion King is a classic 1994 animated musical film which was remade into a photorealistic computer-animated movie this year. “Ours is a shortened version, created for youth groups but it still carries all the punches of the big version,” says director Richard Carruthers. The story follows the adventures of a curious cub named Simba, as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king. Along the way he encounters a cast of memorable characters, including Nala, meerkat Timon, warthog Pumbaa and wicked Uncle Scar. It features plenty of memorable songs from Elton John and Tim Rice, including “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. Richard says the cast of 65 have been “absolutely loving” rehearsals. “We’ve got around half a dozen senior boys and girls taking on the lead roles and a strong contingency of younger ones too. “The music is beautiful and the costumes are stunning. Check if it’s OK to use. Does it have a Council building permit or consent? Was it installed before 2000? Burners installed before 2000 in some parts of Nelson cannot be used or replaced with another wood burner.

Use Good Wood. This means dry wood with less than 25% moisture, left long enough after cutting to dry out before using it.

Check for Council’s list of Good Wood suppliers nelson.govt.nz (search phrase = Good Wood).

Use the right wood at the right time. Lighter wood like Pine or Douglas Fir is good for kindling. Dense wood like Gum will burn longer and give more heat once the fire is burning well.

Store your wood properly – split and stack in a criss-cross pattern for good ventilation and keep in a covered, dry place.

Jacks OPD confirmed its status as firm favourites in the Nelson Premier Netball competition after pipping its nearest rivals, Prices Ahurei, 47-39 at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night. The front-runners kept its perfect record intact to complete the second round of competition in a tightly-fought contest with the 2018 champions. A crucial third quarter, in which replacement Ani Waitai sunk ten from ten, swung the game in favour of Jacks. Jacks captain Jess Drummond says the side prepared well for the challenge. “We always knew it was going to be a tough game and we started with a hiss and a roar which was awesome, our preparation at training was really good.” Jacks were without their star, Rayna Olsen, leaving Alesha Dempster to step into the

shooter’s big shoes. “Even with having a new shooting combination we played really well.” Jess says, while they will enjoy the win, Jacks know that a tough road lies ahead. “It’s always the last round that counts, anything can happen.” Jacks are all too aware of this reality having dominated the 2018 season only to be pipped by Prices at the final hurdle. Prices were also down on personnel with Natalie Fullman, Keri Snodgrass and Chealsea Reed all unavailable for Thursday’s crucial clash. The 2018 runners up managed to hold a slim lead throughout the first two quarters, holding off Prices 11-10 after the first fifteen and a three-goal lead at halftime. However, the defining quarter came when Waitai took the court. The veteran was on fire and did not miss a shot as Jacks took a commanding lead. Prices would claim the final

quarter 12-8 but the damage had been done. The win sees Jacks take out the second round of the premier competition as teams enter a two-week break before round three. In other results, Richmond45 hammered Stoke SPORTWISE 73-29 Nelson College for Girls were too strong for Motueka while Stoke NBS defeated Waimea College 58-39. This sees the round finish with Jacks, Prices, Stoke NBS and Richmond in the top four. The next round will split the sides into top and bottom with NCG, Waimea, Motueka and Stoke SPORTWISE making up the second tier. Jess says it’s a great feeling to be undefeated, but the next challenge is Tasman Trophy in two weeks’ time. “But one game at a time will be the focus of round three and making sure we focus on what we do well and stay composed.”

Young Giant has eyes on future SportS Jonty Dine Nelson basketballer Tysxun Aiolupotea has been invited to rub shoulders with one of the biggest names in the game. The Nayland College student is one of 25 promising young players from around the country selected to attend the Steven Adams High School Invitational Camp in Christchurch next week. The 17-year-old says it’s a dream come true. “To be able to meet Steven Adams and learn as much as I can off him, it’s an awesome opportunity.” The camp will see players learn, both on and off the court, what it takes to play at the highest level. Tysxun says he will relish the chance to train with the top tier talent. “It will be good to be around the top players in New Zealand and see how they operate.” The young guard says his selection is reward for his commitment on the court. “I’ve just been working hard, and the opportunities have come over time.” The camp concludes with two nationally televised games on Sky Sport, just before the NBL semis and finals on July 20 and 21. He hopes the exposure will

Tysxun says his time with the Giants has been an invaluable experience. “There are heaps of leaders in the group so it’s been good to learn off them and soak up everything they have to offer.”

Though he’s had limited time this season, Tysxun hopes to return to the franchise next year. “Hopefully I will be back and get some more minutes on the court.” He says, despite a disappointing campaign, the Giants will be a

National talent in town for Nelson off-road race Jacob Page The Nelson Off-road Car Racing Club will host their annual Youngs Automotive ruff and Tuff event at Spooners Range Forest this weekend. More than 40 drivers from around New Zealand will take part in the action with a strong contingent of Nelson drivers looking to test themselves against some of the best off-road drivers in the country. Time trials will be held on Saturday morning to determine the starting order on the grid. A strong group of Nelson drivers have entered including, Alex Bright, Dan Fisher, Nevil Basalaj, Gregg Winn, Ash Kelly, Grant Adamson, Cam Stratford, Darren Thomason, Bruce McKenzie and John Hodgson. The races will be run on 20km laps around the very fast forest tracks, that include fast flowing gravel roads, steep downhill sections and creek crossings. It will see the top cars completing laps well under 20 minutes per lap. Scrutineering will be on Friday at the Speights Ale House, which is where people can view the cars and meet some of the drivers. Spectators are advised to arrive a little earlier on Saturday to see the full field lined up on the start grid from around 10:30am. Viewing the pits area and race track is on the right at the top of the Spooners Hill Lookout.

Camped on its own line for 20 minutes, a determined defensive display to repel a relentless attack summed up Nelson College’s season. Whanganui Collegiate threw everything it had at Nelson in the final quarter of a bruising battle on a miserable Wellington afternoon last week. Ahead 13-7, Nelson held on for a dramatic win to claim the coveted Quadrangular Tournament title. The courage shown by the side was indicative of a strong brotherhood the team has developed. “The boys dug deep for each other and showed plenty of guts,” says manager Peter Grigg. With inspirational skipper Anton Segnar sitting on the sidelines with a knee injury, stand-in captain Fergus Hughes says it was the most intense experience of his life. “It almost felt inevitable they were going to score, but in the end our heart and desire came through.” Fergus says they felt like they won the game about four times, but the referee continued to march Nelson back to its line.

The blindside flanker says, once the whistle finally blew it was pure jubilation. “We were so spent we could barely celebrate.” Nelson made just one replacement during the final, with 14 men playing the full 70 minutes. “That is testament to our conditioning,” says Peter. Anton says it was a stressful watch from the sideline. “That defence shows how close we are and how tight the brotherhood is in the team and how hard we are willing to work for each other.” While Anton was a part of the side that won quad in Nelson in 2017, he says to do it again in Wellington brought a huge sense of pride. Conditions dictated a forward dominated game in the capital. “Wet, cold and windy, it was horrendous,” says Peter. Whanganui hadn’t won the

prestigious tournament since 1991, so were well motivated. Nelson would open the scoring through the boot of Niko Barton before Collegiate replied with a try to lock Hunter Morrison. Halfback Mason Lund answered with a sneaky dart down the blind to put Nelson back in front. Louis Carmine then crashed over after a long-sustained period of attack to put Nelson six ahead. However, the pressure was amplified as the weather worsened and Nelson began copping it from the referee. Fergus says he didn’t have to say much to his troops as the onslaught ensued. “In that situation I didn’t have to say much, it was all about self-motivation to defend our line,” Fergus says. After an eternity tackling themselves into the turf, Nelson survived the assault

to grind out a famous victory. “Fergus showed outstanding leadership,” says Peter. College now enter a two-week break for school holidays. Fergus and Anton will go into Crusaders Knights camp with ten other Nelson College members before resuming the last three rounds of the UC Championship. “Now we want to remain hungry because that UC is a big goal for us,” Anton says. The side has three more games in the round robin, against St Thomas, Lincoln and Mid-Canterbury. Nelson has dropped only one game to date and currently sit on top of the table. Though its schedule requires a lot of travel, Peter says they have turned this to their advantage. “We have a tough draw with only four home games, but we turned the amount of travel into a positive by using it to bring the team closer.”

The Nelson sub-union semifinalists have been found. However, only one side will enter the play-offs on the back of a win after Waimea, Wanderers and Stoke were all beaten on Saturday. Next week will see Tasman Trophy champions Marist host Stoke in a rematch of the final round, while Waimea Old Boys will play Wanderers. The green machine warmed up for its semi-final showdown with a 3422 win over Stoke at Trafalgar Park. Returning number 8, Taina FoxMatamua, was outstanding for Marist and says it was crucial to take momentum into next week’s semi. Hopefully we can do another number on them then. We were lacking in certain areas, particularly

on defence where we were caught on the back foot a few times, but if we bring the right pieces next week, we will get the job done.” After missing a large chunk of the Tasman Trophy season through injury, Taina says it’s good to be back. “Just been trying to find some form and get the lungs back up to par.” Marist were without skipper James Hawkey, with Sam Briggs shifting from number 10 to inside centre. Briggs didn’t take long to make an impact as he jinked his way through the defence for the opening try. Stoke struck back immediately as Karl Ratcliffe split the Marist defence and drew the last man superbly to set Chad Lowrie away. Taine Robinson responded with a penalty but, while both teams started with a bang, the fireworks soon fizzled as errors plagued the first half. Passed away in Nelson on Sunday 7 July 2019, in her 92nd year. Much loved wife and friend of the late Alexander; loved Mum and mother-inlaw of Shona and John (Matamata), and Glenda and Mark (Takaka); dearly loved grandma of Kate and Luke, and Ben and Ella; and dearly loved great-grandma of Poppy. Russell (Russ) Passed away peacefully on 1st July 2019 at Nelson. Devoted and loved husband of the late Pam; Dearly loved and cherished Dad of Julie, Paul, Denise and Lynley.
