Council vows to do more on climate change Sara Hollyman Nelson City Council still has 20 active consents for diesel and coal boilers, despite recently declaring a state of climate emergency in the city.

Last month the council officially

declared climate change an emergency situation with Mayor Rachel Reese saying the decision was “about setting up a process, starting a conversation with our community to hear the concerns”.

The official declaration did not carry with it any statutory

obligations for future council decisions, however, council chief executive Pat Dougherty said it was “starting on a path”.

“Climate change has been an issue for 30 years, certainly for the past 10 years, we’re all saying ‘we must do something, when

will we start’. This is the day that we start,” he said.

However, according to the council there are still 16 active consents for diesel-fuelled boilers, 11 of which are in schools. There are also four coal boilers in operation around the city, one of which has

a consent that expires next year.

Council group manager environmental management Clare Barton says that council’s initial focus has been upon its own organisational emissions.

Then she realised that she probably owed a debt of gratitude to her 79-year-old husband, George, who may have done the buying while she did the entering.

Her name was chosen at random by the local police out of the hundreds of entries over the past month. The $5000 shopping spree across Nelson shops is a welcome surprise as it’s also Jill’s birthday on Friday.

“Looking ahead, we will be accelerating our work with the community on climate change issues, including on potential emissions reduction actions,” says Clare.

A summary of emissions published by the Ministry for the Environment in 2015, shows that every litre of diesel burnt in a stationary burner produces 2.68kg of carbon dioxide equivalents.

Commercial and industrial coal boilers produce between 1.43 and 2.65kgs of carbon dioxide equivalent for every kilogram of coal burnt.

Clare says while council has statutory responsibilities in relation to climate change, the Resource Management Act 1991 explicitly restricts the ability of councils to consider the effects on climate change from the discharge of greenhouse gases into the air.

The RMA states that: “A regional council must not have regard to the effects on climate change when making a rule

to control the discharge into air of greenhouse gas.”

Clare says, despite this, central government provides support for energy efficiency and promotes the uptake of renewable energy through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

“Funding and loans are available to assist businesses and public sector entities, including schools, to identify opportunities for energy efficiency and conversion to renewable energy, and the development of related business cases for investment.”

She says all consents for discharges from boilers have an expiry date, but The Air Quality Plan currently permits diesel boilers as long as standards are met.

With a review of this plan and the National Environmental Standard for Air Quality, permits for diesel boilers, such as those used on Port Nelson tugs and pilot vessels, may change.

“If it does, recognition of the time and investment required to convert to other boiler methods will be needed.”

“I love my job actually,” she says. “I’ve retired three times, but I couldn’t handle it.”

The couple are getting away this weekend for Jill’s big day – heading over to Picton for a few days “You have to go away and recharge,” George says.

“That’s important.”

Wakatu Square plan shelved Locally Owned and Operated

A proposal to redevelop Wakatu Square has been axed.

A special consultation was undertaken in April with the public relating to the sale of land for a high-quality retail development.

The proposed developer, Cephas Property Nelson Ltd, informed council that Farmers no longer wish to proceed as the key anchor tenant for the development.

Cephas property managing director Steve Baigent says it is disappointing that the proposal put forward will not proceed at this time.

“We appreciate the effort Nelson City Council has made in considering it, and they have shown they are committed to welcoming development in the city centre.”

Cephas Property was in advanced discussions with Farmers to be an anchor tenant, but Farmers have now halted negotiations.

Steve says, they are now advancing other options for their sites.

Restoring dignity to local history one grave at a time Charles Anderson

After four years and 50 cleaned gravestones, Brian McIntyre’s wife now calls him the “cemetarian”.

You can find him up on the slopes of Wakapuaka Cemetery armed with bleach, a wire brush, sandpaper and paint – helping restore some dignity to gravesites that have been lost to time.

“Some of them are looking really pretty sad,” Brian says.

“Covered in lichen, looking really run down.”

Often the local sheep are the culprits, stepping over gravesites and cracking the headstones.

Brian started up the popular Facebook page Top of South Island, New Zealand History last year and has since been responsible for sharing the stories of the region’s history.

Through that he has been asking people about their recollections of characters in Nelson’s past, which led him to tracking down their final resting places.

Wakapuaka is now home 16,000 gravesites and, while it is councilowned land, the maintenance of gravestones is left up to family members.

However, for many there are no family left. So, Brian decided to

do it himself.

“They are people, they deserve some dignity.”

He has cleaned up the grave of early settler Thomas Brunner, the victims of the Maungatapu Murders and is currently doing the victims of the Top House murders, who were killed in 1894.

Early photographer F.N Jones is next the list.

Brian is even going to the lengths of putting in gravestones where they were previously unmarked.

He has found the grave sites of former local characters Archie Gascoigne, who wore cowboy clothes and a 10-gallon hat around Nelson, and Olly Strange, who was known for sitting on the Church Steps knitting balls of wool.

Both had no record of where they lay but Brian found them and has been donated materials to give them a gravestone.

“It’s really fantastic,” Brian says.

He knows the work will be never done but is enlisting the help of the Menzshed to teach them how to do it.

“As you get older you start to appreciate history more,” he says.

“They are not looked after that’s the sad part about it and once they are gone, they are gone.”

Dog park plan needs public’s input Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson City Council is investigating the feasibility of a dedicated dog park and wants dog owners and nondog owners to give them their thoughts through an online survey.

The online survey is part of the preliminary engagement and will be used to develop a possible business case.

Nelson dog owner Andrew Cooke, who raised the idea of a dog park through an article in the Nelson Weekly early last year, says he’s thrilled to see the survey and has even volunteered to look after it if it goes ahead.

“Hopefully will get some good feedback,” he says.

But local canine behaviourist Marianne Castle says a dog park in Nelson would only be successful if it was “huge” and worries the city doesn’t have the space.

“Small dog parks encourage dog fights, dog bullies and human bullies,” she says.

“People tend to stand around talking or on their phones and not pay attention to their own dog or the dogs around them. Out of dog

parks, people and dogs walk. Movement can defuse an explosive situation.

Education and effort are the name of the game.”

Roger says council included a dog park in the LongTerm Plan because they have received a number of submissions on the idea.

He says suitable locations could be investigated in the 2019/20 financial year.

Library redevelopment needs your input: The redevelopment of the Elma Turner Library was mooted by Nelson City Council in the 2018-28 Long Term Plan and as the project enters the preliminary planning phase, community input is being sought. Woman dies on Mt Robert: A woman has died while tramping in the Nelson Lakes National Park on Sunday. Police received a call around 9am about a woman who had become severely hypothermic at high altitude in the national park. A helicopter with a medical crew and Police were dispatched to the scene but the 55-year-old woman was already deceased when they located her on Mount Robert Ridge.

Brook Sanctuary looks to the future The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary has had a roller coaster year but is now moving onto the next phase of development. Reporter Kate Russell talks to new chief executive Ru Collin, operations manager Nick Robson and ecosystem ranger Robert Schadewinkel about the future.

Tell us about the recent board changes at the sanctuary Ru: “Since the beginning of the year, and after comprehensive review of our strategic agenda, we’ve undertaken a few changes.

Dave Butler has stepped down as chairman after 15 years, with local businessman Chris Hawkes picking up the reigns. Over the past four months we’ve been running without an executive, but we’ve been lucky that we’ve attracted additional funding from key partners to put me in place.”

How will the new-look board regroup after such an up and down few years?

Ru: “We’ve got a sanctuary that is operating and open to the public on a limited basis, we’re predator free and now we’re working on getting our introductions programme of work in place.

Looking at our skills, we’ll focus on improving general business, telling our sanctuary ‘story’, increasing fundraising and, most importantly, introducing lost species to the site.”

When will you start introducing new species?

Robert: “We’re looking to introduce rowi, which is the Okarito brown kiwi, this spring.

We’ll also introduce the South Island saddleback in this coming financial year. The introductions programme of work aims to rollout two to three species a year, which is quite an ambitious goal, but I think we can do it. We’re also looking at mohua and kakariki. Even without the reintroductions, the existing established species - South Island robin, rifleman, tui, kereru and morepork - will really start to increase their breeding numbers.”

Are you still having to monitor predators closely?

Robert: “Yes, we do predator monitoring all the time. The fence can be damaged, so we have to constantly be on guard and keep our monitoring and our response to any breaches top notch.”

How will you make the sanctuary more visitor friendly?

Ru: “We want to make our outdoor classroom facility fully

usable and build assets that will help support our reintroductions.

We want to complete our valley loop track which involves a new bridge over a dam, and we plan on opening more tracks to the public in the future. Again, that work is subject to phasing and resources available, but we have some interesting initiatives at planning stage. We also have Rick Field hosting school tours, and we extend the invitation to any of the schools to come up and see us, as well as rest homes. Just contact tours@brooksanctuary.org Nick: “We’ve nearly finished repairing the Dun Mountain Track slip site. Contractors are finishing up and our volunteers will need another two or three weeks to complete the boardwalk work, and then it’ll be complete.”

Why have you asked the Nelson City Council for additional funding of $50,000 a year?

Ru: “If we want to extend our visitor experience offerings, it’s going to take more cost as its activity we will undertake

We are also very keen to get back into the educational space because we believe that’s a place where we can add value, and it’s one of the main points of the trust deed.”

Nick: “We always need more volunteers. We’ve got a huge

Tragedy as truck plunges over hill Charles Anderson Nelson plasterer Joshua O’Connor was trying to change down a gear as he took a corner on the hill of the Riwaka-Sandy Bay Rd on Thursday morning.

But for some reason it wouldn’t take.

Joshua and his co-worker were on the way to a plastering job in Marahau but say they weren’t rushing.

“I kept trying but, in the end, I just had to brake. It was a blind corner so I couldn’t cut it. We ended up steering and going down the bank. I knew the spot and I knew that we had a fair way to go down.”

Joshua told his employee to hold on tight.

“Then we just got rag dolled all the way down the bottom. We just kept rolling.”

When they finally stopped, the truck was balancing over a rock face.

“I was so dizzy. I had totally lost my bearings.”

His employee was dazed and in shock

and ran off, so Joshua had to chase after him to calm him down.

It was then that Joshua remembered that he had taken 12-year-old dog Basil to work that day.

Basil had been in the back of the flatbed ute, underneath a fibreglass hardtop with a gap, so he would have air.

But Basil wasn’t in the truck.

“I just hit panic mode again. I searched around for about 10 minutes and then I found him submerged in water underneath the truck.”

It’s not clear if Basil died from the impact or drowned.

“It was really sad,” Joshua says, and is not sure if he has fully comprehended what has happened.

“Basil had a bloody good life. I don’t think he suffered; I would have heard him.”

Joshua plans to get him cremated. He and his employee are off work while they recover but both only suffered minor injuries.

“She was bloody steep. Someone was looking out for us.”

Conservation and music honoured Charles Eason

Locals have been recognised for their work championing conservation, science and music as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours Professor Charles Eason, who has been the chief executive of the Cawthron Institute since 2012, was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to science and wildlife conservation.

Under Professor Eason’s leadership the Cawthron Institute has increased staff numbers by around 100, trebled its operating surplus, and significantly increased its research output.

Professor Eason is recognised internationally as a leading expert on predator control, has published more than 200 papers and articles, and been lead speaker at numerous international conferences.

Jeffrey Connell, who lives in Nelson but was conservator for the Department of Conservation in Whanganui and Otago, was acknowledged as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to conservation.

During his time as Otago Conservator three new conservation parks were opened and he was instrumental in negotiating for public access to what would become the Motatapu Track.

Debs Martin has held several roles at Forest and Bird and has led a number of environmental campaigns focused on conservation efforts. She was awarded Queen’s Service Medal for services to conservation.

Debs has served as Forest and Bird’s regional manager for the Top of the South Island since 2004. She led the society’s successful campaign and appeal to the Environment Court opposing the construction of a dam on the Mokihinui River, now in

Kahurangi National Park. She campaigned for the protection of the Denniston Plateau from coal mining and is presently leading Forest and Bird’s campaign to prevent further mining on conservation land.

Regionally she supports local Forest and Bird branch members with their projects and commitments and runs the project to save long-tailed bats at Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve in Marlborough.

Nigel Weeks has worked with young people in music since 1994 and has been Head of Music at Manurewa High School, Kings College, MacLeans College, and currently Nayland College. He was recognised with a Queens Service Medal for services to music.

Nigel has led bands and choirs to win numerous national awards and Australasian titles and toured them to a wide range of international festivals.

He has led a number of musicbased fundraising initiatives and performances to help fund international tours.

He was selected by the Brass Band Association of New Zealand to audition and direct the National Youth Brass Band from 1998 to 2003 and the National Secondary Schools Band since 2002, the latter of which was established at his initiative. He is the current director of the National Brass Band of New Zealand, which he conducted on a successful inaugural tour to China and South Korea in 2014. He was reappointed as musical director in 2017, following which he led them to second place at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Holland.

He became Musical Director of the Nelson City Brass Band in 2016 and has been music director of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra and Nelson Civic Choir since 2018. Nigel also conducted the Nelson Male Voice Choir in 2019.

Local organic farmer best in New Zealand Locally Owned and Operated

When Dom Ferretti moved with his family from the Coromandel five years ago, they were taking a risk.

They leased a small piece of land off Dom’s cousin and went to work creating a new organic patch of paradise.

Since then they expanded into Brightwater but are familiar faces at the Nelson markets – both of Saturday and the Wednesday Farmers Market.

Ferretti Growers grew in profile and in customers and now that risk has paid off after being recently awarded the title of Organic Farmer of the Year.

“We are stoked,” says Dom. “Just thrilled.”

The award is through New Zealand Organic Week which started to promote organics in New Zealand and has since

become one of the country’s go to events.

Ferretti Growers were nominated by the Nelson Farmers Market and from there it was up to the public to vote for them.

“We couldn’t have done it without our customers,” says Dom. “They are amazing.”

Dom and his family moved to Nelson from the Coromandel where they were also market gardeners. But the profession is in the blood.

“Our dad and uncle were market gardeners who came over from Italy and did the same thing.”

Because the farm only sells their goods at markets, they grow a lot of variety to ensure they can be a one-stop-shop for people.

“That is challenging but on the other hand it is good not to have all the eggs in one basket.”

Dom says the reason why he is

so passionate about organics is simple.

“Why would you want to put poison on your food and eat it? It’s that simple.”

He says it’s about growing and eating food in a healthy way and looking after the soil.

“If you are constantly reaming the soil it’s not going to work long term for you. You have to protect it.”

The family’s 4.5 ha Wai-iti River Farm has proven to be the place the Ferrettis have chosen to protect.

After five years Dom says the land is actually recovering and their produce is better than ever.

“It’s amazing to see that happen.

We are really proud of what we do and it’s great that the results are what our customers can taste every week.”

That’s a legacy that the third generation market gardeners hope will continue long in the future.

Challenge laid down for striking teachers, Wednesday, May 22: After asking teachers to Youth Nelson on last week’s strike day, Daniel Hawke from Youth Nelson says they had 12 visitors, four of which were teachers.

Noelene from Nelson Christian Academy brought lunch in for the students in a very generous act and Richard and Jo Brought afternoon tea.

They had a fellow tutor from alternative education in Motueka come in to see what they do and how as well as some members of the general public.

Five school students came in, one of which was a former student from last year who has returned to Nayland College.

They helped out and spent some time with the students sharing messages of support.

They had emails and text messages of support from all over the country, offers of Koha and contact from other alternative education providers and supporters.

They also had a visit from a former student’s mum, bringing in chocolates and flowers.

Daniel says they don’t always get to see the success in front of them.

“It’s moments like this that make the whole journey with every student worthwhile.”

Bookworms stormed the gates of Founders Park on Saturday morning on the hunt for literary treasures.

Literature lovers lined the entrance prior to opening as young and old rummaged through banana boxes brimming with books. Head coordinator Karen Clark says expectations had been exceeded. “Both rooms have been packed all day, people have just kept coming.” Heidi and Rosie Stephens were also happy with their haul.

Rare bird spotted at Kellys Forest, Wednesday, May 1: The Kellys Conservation Forest open day on May 5 was a huge success, says owner Lindy Kelly.

“We got over 300 people, including new volunteers. We had a truly wonderful day.”

Lindy says there were no sightings of the rare mohua.

“I suppose they’d be put off by all the crowds.

Someone thought they heard the song though.”

The seven hectares of native forest tucked away in Enner Glynn is due to the work of Lindy and her family, who have been restoring it for the last 34 years. Lindy says the forest is set to increase in size again this winter, with 8000 more trees to be planted and included in a DOC Covenant, bringing the size of the forest to over 10ha, with trails and picnic areas throughout.

Response to Youth Nelson’s strike challenge: Youth Nelson holds a very special place in my heart because this place in many ways saved my life. I came to Youth Nelson at 14 years old after being expelled from two high schools, suspended and stood down multiple times and ultimately rejected from every school in my region.

Maree Shalders, Helen, Paul and later Pita and Bevan were some of the many people who opened their doors to me, and many students like me.

We had all been removed from school for various reasons. Most of us had major attitudes, problems with authority, we were argumentative and violent.

We used drugs, drank alcohol and smoked. We swore, spat, fought and wagged continuously and barley ever obeyed dress-code.

Me and many other students on

any day would give these people hell.

But they never gave up on us.

They were patient and compassionate and went to every extent to understand us and help us understand our problems. Picking up and dropping off, food Mondays and Fridays, one on one tutoring, counselling and endless life-changing experiences which I will never forget. These people created a family environment for understanding, growth and encouragement that many kids in New Zealand fail to find in mainstream schooling. I cannot explain how much these people changed my life over the year and a half I attended.

Today, I am in my third year of a triple degree in criminal justice, political science and Maori and indigenous studies. I am a tutor at university and contemplating further studies.

I owe much of who I am and the achievements to come to the time and support that was given to me at this place.

Nelson Matters This year’s Budget was definitely different. There was high drama and finger pointing over the early leaks. Pretty pictures have replaced factual financials. The Coalition Government has declared it the ‘Wellbeing Budget’ while the National opposition the ‘Botched Budget’. I am far more interested in what it means for our Nelson community than the political spin.

The most immediate effect of the Budget on Nelson households and businesses will be the increase in petrol tax by another 3.5c a litre on 1 July. The Budget legislation also adds another 3.5c next July. Road user chargers also go up. These tax increases push up costs on everything

from groceries to building materials.

These tax increases will cost Nelson and Tasman another $10 million dollars. My problem is that the Government is at the same time reducing investment on State Highways by 70% including cancelling upgrades of our local SH6 in Stoke and Atawhai. We are paying more while congestion on our roads just keeps getting worse.

The Government’s talk about wellbeing is not matched by what is actually going on in our schools. The teacher’s megastrike last week was the worst ever, and the disruption continues this week. The root cause is Labour promising 20% pay in-

creases in Opposition and then refusing much smaller claims in Government. Teachers are also understandably angry when they see wasteful spending in areas much less important than children’s education.

I commend the increase in funding for mental health and drug addiction services that the Nelson community and I have been advocating for. We now need to ensure it is effectively delivered.

I worry about the overall funding for our District Health Board. Its finances were strong but have deteriorated significantly this year. I am seeing many Nelsonians whose surgery has been cancelled or delayed and this budget provides little

The Budget is also a disappointment for Nelson Hospital. No provision has been made in the next four years for the critical major upgrade of our main hospital buildings despite their earthquake risk. We cannot keep putting this off.

The economy was growing at 4% under National but has slowed to 2%. The Budget fills the hole by borrowing an extra $14 billion over the next three years. A strong economy that can fund improved health and education remains the best way to secure Nelson and New Zealand’s future wellbeing.

Golfers unite for good cause Staff Reporter A charity golf tournament has raised $22,000 for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust.

A BNZ team took first place in the recently held 19-team tournament held at the Nelson Golf Course on Friday, which is sponsored by Summit Real Estate, Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly.

NMRHT manager Paula Muddle says the day was “absolutely

fantastic” and ran seamlessly.

“The Nelson Golf Club organised it extremely well and we had great weather. Everyone turned up with a really positive attitude.”

A charity auction raised a large portion of the funds with prizes including a glove signed by Bill Clinton.

“Everyone was so generous with the auction, the sponsors and the participants, everyone was just amazing,” says Paula.

Wikipedian comes to Nelson

Staff reporter New Zealand’s only “Wikipedian-at-Large”, Is arriving next week in Nelson to spend three weeks working with the Nelson Provincial Museum.

Nelson is Mike Dickison’s last stop on a one-year contract, funded by the US-based Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia.

Since July 2019, he has travelled all over New Zealand with residencies held at Auckland Museum, New Zealand Geographic, the National Library of NZ, Landcare Research, Otago Museum, and the University of Canterbury.

While there he ran public events such as “edita-thons” and helped those institutions make their collections and information more available online to the public via Wikipedia.

Mike will be working with Nelson Provincial Museum as a Wikipedian-in-residence, exploring the museum’s collection of glass-plate negatives and other images of Nelson’s history. He’ll be giving public talks and workshops, including an edit-a-thon to accompany the museum’s “Buller’s Birds” exhibition, which will be done in collaboration with Nelson’s Elma Turner library.

Parent and Child Expo keeps growing up Locally Owned and Operated

Staff Reporter The ever-popular Nelson Parent and Child Expo promises to be even bigger and better this year with the team from Nelson Venues & Events taking over the running of it.

Shelley Haring of Nelson Venues & Events says that this will be the ninth year of the expo and they are proud to continue on the great work that previous owner Prue Fothergill of Ecomoon Collective had put in place for the event.

The expo will take over the whole of Founders Park with a range of exhibitors catering from babies through to teens.

Shelley says there will be speakers and workshops, kids’ activities and entertainment plus more.

She says to keep an eye on its Facebook and Instagram pages for updates.

“We aim to equip parents and caregivers with the tools and products for effective parenting, empower through informative talks and workshops, and excite all ages with an interactive and family fun day out.”

Residents of Nelson Whakatū are being offered the chance to take a good look around the brandnew Greenmeadows Community Centre. The purpose-built community facility in Stoke is opening up its doors this weekend to let locals see what is on offer.

The facility is already fully occupied by a range of sporting and community groups, with organisations such as Stoke Seniors, Stoke Rugby, Stoke Tennis, RSA and Nelson Cricket already calling it home.

Over the next thirty years, Stoke is expected to be home to threequarters of Nelson’s population growth and half of its new housing. Nelson City Council has recognised the need for appropriate facilities and services to support this growth forecast. After extensive consultation with the community, NCC approved plans for the new sport and community facility, which was completed earlier this year.

Nelson Cricket played host to a very successful Junior Tournament there in January, and the café opened in February.

This Sunday will give everyone the chance to “have a go” at some of the activities on offer at the new community centre. Stoke Tennis Club will have rac-

quets and balls available, whilst the Arts Council will be offering visitors the opportunity to create art which will then be displayed on the walls of Greenmeadows.

There will also be information and details about other activities available all year round, not to mention a bouncy castle, a sausage sizzle and Flossie the Balloon Lady! The Stoke Pop-up

ARTS Art inspired by incarceration A new exhibition is shining a light on the effect prison can have not just on those inside but those left without a parent, a child or a sibling.

Kōrero Pono, a multimedia exhibition created by JustSpeak, is travelling the country, giving a voice to those with lived experience of the justice system.

It opened this week at the Refinery Artspace and features the intimate stories of sixteen Kiwis who have been affected by incarceration. The stories run alongside portraits by a number of Kiwi artists including Marianne Muggeridge, Sophia Minson and John Crawford.

JustSpeak Director Tania Sawicki Mead says the project shares the importance of investing in solutions that resolve harm, rather than believing that punishment will provide accountability.

“Korero Pono simply translates to honest talk, which is what we need when it comes to incarceration in New Zealand,” she says.

The exhibition challenges the stigma faced by people who have been affected by the criminal justice system. The project seeks to build awareness of the collateral consequences of imprisonment on people, whanau and communities.

Nelson Repertory sinks its teeth into new ‘bloody’ show Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell Nelson Repertory Theatre’s latest production is sure to be one that won’t suck. Or will it?

The critically acclaimed ‘Dracula - The Bloody Truth’ has its New Zealand debut at the Theatre Royal next Wednesday night.

Originally staged in the UK, this Le Navet Bete production will take audiences on a journey across Europe from the Transylvanian mountains to the seaside town of Whitby where Van Helsing and his three actors try to stage a life-changing, factual theatrical production of the events of Dracula.

Four Nelson actors will be playing 30 characters - one of them being production manager, Jenny Holden.

“It’s a very physical comedy with lots of running, airborne props and mad stuff going on,” she says.

“It’s quirky and fast-paced

with lots of clever dialogue and a bit of slapstick.

Audience members will be included in the fun and all the frantic costume changes are part of the comedy too.”

Jenny, who plays both male and female characters says the play is written by actors who specialise in physical comedy.

“We’re lucky to have this in Nelson.”

Directed by local theatre legend Hugh Neill, it’s on for four shows only, running from 7.30 – 9.30pm each night.

Nelson Repertory Theatre put on four to five shows a year and Jenny says their next show will be in November - a one act play festival in collaboration with other theatre groups.

‘Dracula - The Bloody Truth’ is on at the Theatre Royal from 12 - 15th June.

Nelson’s Allan Brodie will be in the best seat in the house as some of the world’s best volleyballers take to the court in Thailand today.

The Nelson Volleyball stalwart will act as the technical delegate for the 2019 Volleyball Nations League in what will be the pinnacle of his illustrious career spanning five decades.

Allan will oversee six games played between the hosts, Turkey, the Dominican Republic and Bulgaria.

The 71-year-old is one of only thirty International Volleyball Federation sanctioned technical delegates worldwide.

His role at the tournament will include inspecting facilities, acting as an extra set of eyes on the court and working with the more than 30 personnel required to run an international volleyball match.

“We all work together to create

a spectacle.”

Allan would also be required to intervene should referee and player relations turn sour.

“I’ve never had to step in during a game, you hope that it won’t come to that.”

Allan says there is an element of pressure in his position and he naturally carries some nerves.

“I’m every bit as accountable as the ones hitting the ball. I have to do my bit to present the game well.”

The Nelson Volleyball junior development officer says while he has officiated international fixtures before, this will be the high point of his career which began in 1973.

“I’ve got the top seat to see the best volleyball in the world.”

He says the country will be buzzing for the tournament.

“The Thais are passionate about volleyball. The players over there are rock stars so the stadium will be full, and they will be making a whole lot of noise.”

Tasman United committee resigns Jonty Dine Following a disappointing season on-field, tensions have spilled over off it as Tasman United’s committee has resigned en masse, following the release of head coach Andy Hedge.

All five members of the franchise’s committee stepped down from their roles last Thursday.

Their resignations come in the wake of Hedge not being offered a renewal on his one-year contract.

Nelson Bays Football general manager Nic Foster says the resigning members were a passionate and tireless group who played a major part in returning National League football to the region.

“The club hope to make further announcements on the coaching staff, playing venue, and highperformance group members in the coming week.”

They are also looking for a new support structure for game days, which kick off in October.

Nic says the district executive will now be looking to implement a high-performance advisory group.

“Tasman United is currently preparing for the upcoming season ISPS Handa Premiership and are now completing reviews on all parts of the franchise. They are also waiting for the licence application to be approved by New Zealand Football.”

He says the licencing process is complex and they have to audit facilities, finances and coaching structure to meet these criteria.

“Once that is approved, we will push the go button for 2019/2020 as soon as possible. Not having the hardworking Tasman United committee behind us means we will have to think differently about achieving what it takes to run a National League team.”

Committee members were unable to comment.

Tasman finished last season in eight position with just three wins from its 18 games.

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants couldn’t give returning legend Mika Vukona a happy homecoming as they went down 82-71 to the undefeated Saints at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night.

Wellington’s relentless defence proved too much for Nelson and, after a strong start, the shots stopped dropping for the Giants and the top placed side ran away with it in the second half.

The loss sees Nelson’s hopes of play-off basketball ended for 2019.

Jordair Jett would sink the first points of the evening and Rhys Vague the first three as Nelson raced out to an 11-4 lead.

Tom Ingham and Bronson Beri made strong impressions as they were introduced from the pine.

Nelson held their lead throughout the second, Rhys Vague hitting double figures with his second from outside the arc.

Dan Grida’s maximum with less than a minute remaining in the second gave the faithful plenty of confidence with half-time approaching.

Wanderers had no answers for the onslaught and Barrell burrowed over for his second as the visitors began falling off numerous tackles.

Hawkey then got in on the action before Wanderers did give its supporters something to cheer about as Fletcher Matthews scurried down the sideline to put his side on the board before the break.

Marist would respond immediately, however, through Moli who scored the eighth first half try and brought up the half century to cap a completely dominant forty minutes for Marist.

The issues were compounded for Wanderers as one of its key attacking weapons in centre Tone Vaka was sent to the bin for a brutal looking spare tackle.

Gavin says while winning becomes a habit, nothing can be taken for granted as evidenced by its shock final round loss to Renwick.

“It was definitely a reality check, not that we were going overconfident.

We have been sure to stray grounded and level-headed, but Renwick were really up for that one.”

The loss clearly lit a fire in Marist who came out and blew its opponents off the park within 20 minutes of Saturday’s semi-final.

Marist didn’t take long to get on the board as Saulekaleka exploded onto a rogue kick, beat three defenders and linked up with Spowart for the opening try.

Saulekaleka set up the second with another scything run before Sam Briggs burst through the line to give Marist all the early momentum.

The fullback’s sensational start continued as he crashed over himself moments later for a 17-0 lead with just 15 minutes gone.

A fourth try soon followed after Marist decimated the Wanderers’ scrum and Briggs danced through the defence to bag a brace with less than a quarter of the game gone.

The carnage continued as Spowart made another scintillating break before linking up with Barrell who went in for Marist’s fifth.

SportS Netball: The cream is beginning to rise to the top in the Nelson Premier Netball Competition.

Jacks OPD remain undefeated after notching another comfortable win last night over Stoke SPORTWISE. Prices Ahurei also picked up a hard-fought win over Nelson College for Girls who continue to push their more senior opponents. Waimea were victorious in the battle of the colleges by just four goals while Stoke NBS proved too strong for Richmond despite losing Pip Lee to a seasonending achilles injury in the second quarter. Jacks still sit clear atop the premier table with four wins from four in the second round and a goal differential of more than 100.

Rugby: The Stoke Rugby Club lost a true legend last month when Ken Mansfield passed away suddenly while at work. Ken set Nelson rugby records with his senior playing career spanning four decades from the 1970s to the 2000s. He played more than 200 senior games, a record number for Stoke and possibly any club in Nelson. He was a hard-working prop from the old school, a lifelong member of the front row club. Ken was instrumental in all of Stoke’s championship winning teams through the 80s and 90s. These occasions, combined with playing and training together, forged real team unity and lifelong friendships.

Ken was the glue that kept a team and a club together, performing through good and bad times, wins and losses. He was a team and club man first and foremost who will be sadly missed, not only by his Stoke clubmates but also his fellow front row opponents from the Tasman region.

Suburbs defeated bottomplaced FC Twenty 3-0 in chilly conditions at Saxton Field to stay right in touch with first placed Cashmere, with its seventh win of the season.

Jordan Yong sat out the game with a medial ligament injury he picked up during the side’s Chatham Cup win on Thursday night.

The star striker could be on the side-lines for up to six weeks.

Suburbs were first on the board as goal scoring machine Cameron Gordan netted his 15th of the season, heading in a precision cross from Ryan Stewart.

Suburbs continued to make all the plays as they dominated territory and possession against their Christchurch opponents.
